Enzo Fernandez insists Argentina represented themselves in the "best possible way" at the World Cup despite the Chelsea midfielder's red card in the final and a host of ugly incidents in their controversial campaign.Fernandez was sent off for a second booking after clattering into Spain's Pau Cubarsi in the closing stages of normal time in Sunday's 1-0 loss.The 25-year-old's premature exit was the latest in a series of clashes to cast a shadow over Argentina's run to the final.Leandro Paredes appeared to throw punches at members of the Spain squad as they celebrated their victory, with FIFA subsequently launching an investigation into potential disciplinary breaches following the unsavoury post-match scenes.They also turned their backs on Spain when the Spanish received their medals and the trophy.Argentina's players also caused controversy by displaying a banner reading "Las Malvinas son Argentinas" (The Falklands are Argentine) after beating England in the semi-finals.Argentina invaded the British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic in 1982.But Britain regained the archipelago in a brief war after then prime minister Margaret Thatcher dispatched a naval taskforce.Fernandez took to Instagram to defend his country for their World Cup performance, but made no mention of his sending off in his message to supporters."As time goes by, you realise there is something much bigger than just a result," he said."For years, this group has represented the team in the best possible way. It teaches that competing isn't just about winning; it's about giving your all for the jersey and never giving up."Fernandez was a member of the Argentina team that beat France to win the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.But Fernandez's hopes of a second successive title were shattered after his dismissal as Ferran Torres's 106th-minute strike settled a dour final marred by Argentina's defensive tactics."It has been a privilege to be part of a group that always stepped up, competed at the highest level, and defended these colours with pride, humility, and commitment," he said."I want to thank all the Argentina fans. Thank you for always being there, for supporting us in every match, for the affection, for the unconditional support, and for making us feel at home anywhere in the world."Wearing my country's jersey is the greatest honour of my career, and I will continue to give my all every time I get to defend it."Meanwhile, Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez will consider his international future in the aftermath of the final heartbreak.The 33-year-old Aston Villa star, who won the World Cup four years ago, said on Instagram: "I dreamed of winning it again; I dreamed of bringing it back to Argentina and making history once more."Honestly, the pain is hard to put into words. Now I have to reflect on many things, see how to move forward, and decide if it's time to step aside."I am truly sorry. I gave it my all to help my country and my team-mates." 

Enzo Fernandez changed England's weekend plans and Lautaro Martinez booked Argentina in the World Cup final with the game-winner seven minutes later in another dramatic comeback and 2-1 win for the defending world champs at Atlanta Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.Two possessions after he fired a rising missile deflected over the net by England keeper ‌Jordan Pickford, Hernandez used a Lionel Messi assist for a replay of almost the same shot, but ​planted this one into the left ‌corner of the net in the 85th minute. In the first two minutes of extra time, ‌Martinez settled in front of ⁠Pickford at the left edge ‌of the goal and headed a Messi pass by ‌Pickford to cap a stirring rally.The reigning World Cup champions, Argentina meet Spain on Sunday in East Rutherford, N.J., with ⁠a chance to claim a fourth title.Messi has eight goals and four assists in this World Cup and a tournament- record 12 career assists after two on Wednesday.For more than 80 minutes, all signs were pointing to England getting its first World Cup championship bid in decades. GORDON BROKE THE DEADLOCKWith Argentina's defense backpedaling, Anthony Gordon broke the deadlock in the 55th minute.He tallied the game's first goal on a brilliant assist from Morgan Rogers, who was fed by Declan Rice. Rogers recovered the ball outside the box right of the goal and found Gordon streaking ahead of defenders ​to deflect the pass with the side of his right foot for the score.Moments later, England defender Djed Spence caught up to Giuliano Simeone, who had space and pace behind coverage on what would have been a clean shot from close range. The maligned Spence ‌delivered one of the tackles of the tournament, ⁠covering significant distance to ​dislodge the ball inside the box.Before a hydration break as the 70th minute approached, Pickford ​made his own bid for England's gold star defensive play of the game. He got his right hand on a ball sailing for the right corner of the goal to make a deflection and diving save to his right, keeping the score 1-0. ONLY INCHES AWAY Only inches spared the Three Lions and Pickford from the equalizer courtesy of Alexis Mac Allister in the 76th minute when he met a cross from Rodrigo DePaul near the penalty spot but the shot cannoned off the right post.La Scaloneta tested Pickford immediately out of the halftime break. Julian Alvarez ripped two shots approaching from Pickford's left to spike the energy and decibel level in the dome, but missed both. The second sank into the outside of the net.Messi and Argentina also threatened late in the first half, first when ‌Messi danced free of Harry Kane near midfield ‌and drew a yellow card on midfielder Elliot Anderson. ⁠The possession nearly ended in a goal by Fernandez, who tallied the decisive quarterfinal goal to eliminate Egypt last week ⁠in the round of 16. His clean strike from ⁠outside the box whizzed over the top right corner of the bar in the 39th minute and the first half ended in a 0-0 stalemate.Neither team threatened a legitimate attempt in a physical opening 19 minutes highlighted by contested defense and restraint from referee Ismail Elfath, allowing grinding defense to turn into grass stains instead of scoring chances. CHEST-THUMPING EXCHANGES Elfath helped separate England's Jude Bellingham and Messi when the match opened with a no-call on a forearm from Fernandez to the back of Anderson's head, one ​of multiple chest-thumping exchanges between the teams in the first half.England missed three chances in the first half. The initial shot could've been confused for a pass. It came when right back Reece James one-touched a pass from Rogers and looked for his first score of the World Cup. His low, soft try from right of the penalty area was easily smothered at ankle height by Emiliano Martinez.Before the late onslaught Messi, playing in his sixth World Cup and 206th international match for Argentina, had a clean look outside the box in the 83rd minute but pushed it wide left.Argentina finished with 15 attempts on goal to five for England, which squares off with France in the third-place match in Miami ‌on Saturday.Spain can break a ​tie with Italy with a victory. La Roja carries a 37-match unbeaten streak -- 30 wins, seven draws -- into the championship match, vying to win the World Cup for the second time (2010). 

Trackhouse rider Raul Fernandez delivered a dominant performance to win Saturday’s sprint race at the Dutch Grand Prix, overtaking ‌pole sitter Jorge Martin on the third lap ​to claim his second ‌sprint victory of the season.Ai Ogura completed ‌a landmark result ⁠for the ‌team by finishing second, ‌0.362 seconds behind Fernandez, sealing Trackhouse’s first-ever 1-2 finish in ⁠a sprint race. The contest was also the first to be held under MotoGP’s new rules banning front holeshot devices."I think we found that we are quite strong. It is an amazing result for me and for the team," Fernandez, who took his maiden MotoGP sprint ​win at Mugello in May, said."The track was quite nice. I was quite fast in the final part of the race, ‌but honestly, I was ⁠on my limit. ​We have to see what happens tomorrow." Martin ​made a strong launch from pole but was overtaken by Fernandez, Di Giannantonio and Ogura, then slipped further as he battled teammate Bezzecchi for fourth.Di Giannantonio took third after holding off Bezzecchi, while Martin faded to fifth."The race was really close. It was a shame that I lost a couple of spots in the first three laps. We know what we have ‌to improve tomorrow," Ogura ‌said. BEZZECCHI FINISHES FOURTHBezzecchi, who retired from ⁠the sprint at Brno a week ago before being banned ⁠from the Grand ⁠Prix for slapping a marshal, finished fourth to extend his championship lead by one point. The Aprilia rider now leads teammate Martin by nine points in the standings.Marc Marquez finished seventh but was awarded sixth place after his Ducati teammate ​Francesco Bagnaia dropped a position after being penalised for exceeding track limits on the final chicane.Gresini's Alex Marquez started the sprint race after missing qualifying and finished 13th, while Honda’s Joan Mir crashed out on the opening lap.Di Giannantonio closed to within 22 points of Bezzecchi, with Marc Marquez a further 20 points back. Ogura sits on 143, ‌one behind Marquez, ​ahead of Pedro Acosta (133) and Bagnaia (130).
