FIFA to share documents related to World Cup private investment plan

FIFA will allow members of its ruling Council to view "key documents" related to the aborted project to sell stakes in the World Cup to private investors, a source close to world football's governing body told AFP on Tuesday."FIFA has informed the members of its Council, including all the vice-presidents, that they will have access to key documents in relation to FIFA Forward Enterprise," the source told AFP, referring to FIFA president Gianni Infantino's FFE proposal.Members of the Council - a total of 37 people including Infantino and eight FIFA vice-presidents - were informed on Monday in a letter sent by FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafstrom that they must come forward "in the next two weeks" if they want to see the documents "in person and in specific conditions".The documents can be consulted at the headquarters of world football's governing body in Zurich, Switzerland, the source added. The move came as a November 2 deadline set by European governing body UEFA to answer a series of questions related to the FFE proposal passed on Monday.UEFA has led the opposition to the project, which was revealed in late July and would have seen FIFA open up its premium competitions such as the World Cup to private investors.Infantino quickly abandoned the proposal in the face of an uproar, but UEFA has gone to a court in Florida in an attempt to gather evidence for a potential complaint of "criminal mismanagement" against the FIFA president in Switzerland.Following a FIFA Council meeting on October 15, UEFA general secretary Theodore Theodoridis sent a letter to Grafstrom with a list of over 40 questions and requests for information related to FFE.It also raised other issues such as the decision to award a FIFA Peace Prize to Trump and the decision to suspend a red card shown to United States player Folarin Balogun at the World Cup following an intervention by the US President.FIFA did not respond to UEFA before the deadline, arguing that this was "impractical".Infantino is standing for re-election as FIFA president next March. The deadline for rival candidates to declare themselves is November 18, but UEFA has so far not been able to find a credible challenger to put forward.Infantino was handed a major boost when the Asian Football Confederation announced on October 23 that it was backing him for re-election.CONCACAF chief Victor Montagliani was mooted as a candidate, but the Canadian has announced his desire to stand for a new term as the head of the North American confederation, meaning he is unlikely to challenge Infantino.Ramon Vega, the former Tottenham Hotspur, Celtic and Switzerland defender, has stated a willingness to stand but it remains to be seen if he will get the necessary support.

Former Japan coach Okada quits JFA vice-president role over FIFA concerns

Former Japan coach Takeshi Okada has resigned as vice-president of the Japan Football Association, citing concerns over developments surrounding FIFA and the World Cup, the JFA said on Wednesday.Okada's resignation came a week after Asian Football Confederation (AFC) president Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa declared support for Gianni Infantino's bid for re-election as FIFA president at the AFC's extraordinary congress in Tokyo.The endorsement marked a sharp shift from the AFC's position three months earlier, when the confederation accused FIFA of a "fundamental breach of trust" over the abandoned FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) proposal to sell a stake in FIFA competitions."Guided by my belief that sports should embody integrity, I have always valued their social significance," Okada said in a statement on the JFA website."However, the series of actions surrounding this year's FIFA World Cup represent a significant divergence from my personal convictions. As a sportsman, I cannot accept this, which has led me to make this decision."Infantino, who has led FIFA since 2016, is seeking re-election in March after apologising for his failed private investment project. Support from Asia, one of FIFA's largest voting blocs, could prove crucial to his bid."Given the relationship with the Asian Football Confederation and the impact on Japanese soccer, I understand that there are practical reasons for aligning with the AFC's stance," Okada said.Okada coached Japan at the 1998 and 2010 World Cups, leading the team to the last 16 in South Africa.

FIFA to visit potential 2030 World Cup host cities in November and December

FIFA will carry out a series of visits to candidate host cities in Spain, Portugal and Morocco in November and December as part of the venue selection process for the 2030 World Cup, world football's governing body said on Tuesday.A FIFA delegation will visit candidate cities and stadiums in all three host countries to assess their suitability to host games.FIFA has yet to confirm which venues will be included, and has not announced where the World Cup final will be held, with Spain and Morocco battling to hold football's biggest match.Visits are planned for Agadir, Casablanca, Fez, Marrakech, Rabat and Tangier in Morocco; Lisbon and Porto in Portugal; and Barcelona, Bilbao, Las Palmas, Madrid, San Sebastian, Seville and Zaragoza in Spain. FIFA said it may also conduct visits to additional venues during the selection process.The governing body added that the allocation of matches and the type of games to be staged at each venue would only be determined after the final list of host cities is confirmed and work on the tournament match schedule progresses.The first three games of the 2030 World Cup will be held in Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay, in tribute to the centenary of the competition, which was first staged in 1930 in Uruguay.

AFC to refer Jordan FA chief to judicial bodies over Infantino claims

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) on Tuesday said it would refer Jordan Football Association President Prince Ali bin Hussein to its judicial bodies, after he accused FIFA President Gianni Infantino of hijacking the AFC Congress for political purposes.At the AFC's extraordinary congress in Tokyo on Friday, its president Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al-Khalifa endorsed Infantino's bid for re-election as FIFA president.Only three months after the confederation accused Infantino of a "fundamental breach of trust" over the abandoned FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) proposal to sell a stake in FIFA tournaments, Sheikh Salman told the congress that Asia was now united behind Infantino.Following the congress, Prince Ali alleged that nobody was allowed to speak, question, debate or talk with the media and that the last day of the event was "pure politics".In response, the AFC said neither Prince Ali nor any other member association's representatives had requested to speak and that it rejected any suggestion that proceedings were conducted improperly."The AFC takes seriously the unsupported and entirely unsubstantiated allegations of coercion, threats or bribery. Such serious accusations must be supported by credible evidence and should not be made without a proper factual basis," it added."Accordingly, the AFC will refer the statements made by the President of the Jordan Football Association, including the allegations raised, to the relevant AFC judicial bodies for their consideration and any further action deemed appropriate in accordance with the AFC Statutes and applicable regulations."In August, Prince Ali launched a public attack on Infantino, accusing him of "blackmail" and saying FIFA had offered to help solve the kingdom's problems in exchange for his endorsement.

Taking place from November 19 to December 13, the FIFA U-17 World Cup Qatar 2026 will be held at the state-of-the-art Competition Complex at Aspire Zone, with 48 teams competing across 104 matches. The final will take place at Ahmad bin Ali Stadium.

Asian Cup to move to even years under AFC governance reforms

The Asian Football Confederation approved sweeping changes to its statutes on Friday, including a decision to move the Asian Cup to even-numbered years from 2032 as part of efforts to align with FIFA's evolving international calendar.The amendments were unanimously approved at an Extraordinary Congress in Tokyo and introduced measures designed to keep the AFC's electoral cycle in sync with its competitions calendar amid upcoming changes to FIFA's schedule.Under the new framework, the Asian Cup, traditionally staged in odd-numbered years, will switch to an even-year cycle beginning with the 2032 tournament. The next edition is set to take place from January to February 2027 in Saudi Arabia.The AFC said the move would ensure its leadership cycle remains aligned with the confederation's flagship national-team competition and allow its executive committee to retain oversight of the event during key stages of its organisation."Your decision today reinforces our governance and ensures our regulations remain robust, transparent, and fit for purpose to guarantee continuity, enabling us to usher in a brighter and better future for Asian football," AFC President Shaikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa, who is seeking a fourth term in office next year, told delegates. The AFC confirmed that elections for its leadership positions will still be held in 2027. However, under the new arrangements, those elected will take office on January 1, 2028, for a four-year term running through 2032. The current executive members will remain in place until the end of 2027.

Asian confederation boss backs Infantino's reelection bid

Asian Football Confederation head Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim al-Khalifa endorsed Gianni Infantino's bid for reelection as FIFA president on Friday, just two months after describing his plan to sell a stake in FIFA tournaments as a "breach of trust".Infantino faced calls to resign over his failed attempt in July to bring private investors into a new commercial entity holding rights linked to competitions including the World Cup, with Sheikh Salman joining the presidents of UEFA and CONCACAF to pen an open letter criticizing the FIFA president's conduct.Infantino, who apologised over the handling of the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) project at a FIFA Council meeting in Zurich this month, is up for reelection in March next year and the support of the Asian bloc could prove crucial.Speaking at the AFC's extraordinary congress in Tokyo on Friday, Sheikh Salman said he had ironed out his differences with Infantino."I think that we reaffirm our full commitment, of course, to supporting you and your leadership as you seek a new mandate as a FIFA president," he said in comments directed at Infantino, who was present at the meeting."I want to make it clear: yes, we had some issues we spoke about in the past but let's not relate the two things together," added the Bahraini, who is also seeking a fourth term in office next year."I think the last few days we met in Zurich. You made it clear that there was a true, a clear understanding between us."We need to move forward. And we believe football is strongest when we work together with a shared vision and a common purpose."As one Asian family we are ready to move forward, united in your support Gianni. I just want to make that clear today."While Africa has also backed Infantino's reelection, he continues to face opposition from European soccer's governing body. UEFA has sent a letter to FIFA seeking answers about his presidency, including questions over the FFE project and the FIFA Peace Prize.Reuters has contacted UEFA for a response to the AFC president's comments.Infantino, 56, is seeking a fourth term until 2031 and potential candidates must submit their nominations by November 18. 'FANTASTIC JOB'Infantino, in his address to the AFC delegates, gave Sheikh Salman his backing for another term."You've been doing a fantastic job in AFC in the last 13 years, my dear Salman," he said."You will do fantastically as well for the next how many years you want. And always, always with my full support, with the partnership of FIFA, because we have seen what we have been doing in the last years."Asked later about Sheikh Salman's comments, Infantino said: "I feel great about the AFC's support."Several key AFC members, including Saudi Arabia and Qatar, have already publicly declared their support for Infantino.Japan Football Association President Tsuneyasu Miyamoto told reporters on Friday the association was looking to align with the AFC but that they had not made a decision.He was also unsure whether all 47 members of the confederation were united in supporting the Swiss-Italian administrator."I don't think the AFC members' opinions are all aligned together, but I believe the AFC and FIFA have been holding meetings on an ongoing basis," Miyamoto said."I also understand that they discussed the matter at the recent FIFA Council meeting in Zurich. So I think this (support for Infantino) is the result of discussions that have taken place on various occasions."He has made it clear that he is withdrawing the FFE and that he has no intention of pursuing it further going forward. He also apologised about it, so everyone has taken his words."Reuters has contacted the AFC's member associations seeking to clarify their positions.

With less than one month to go until the FIFA U-17 World Cup Qatar 2026, Aspire Academy Chief Sports Officer and Australian football legend Tim Cahill is looking forward to watching a new generation of players given a stage of their own, in a country where he has spent years developing young talent.“This is the biggest and the best U-17 World Cup ever. There'll never be another one like it. Everyone that I speak to is so impressed with the level of detail on and off the pitch. Qatar sets high standards and creates world-class platforms that these young players are excited to be part of. They don't want to miss out,” said Cahill. The FIFA U-17 World Cup Qatar 2026 is the second of five consecutive editions the country will host through 2029. The 48-team tournament is set to take place from 19 November to 13 December at the Competition Complex in Aspire Zone, with as many as eight matches a day and 104 matches in total.The Aspire Zone also houses the Aspire Academy, Qatar’s flagship academy founded in 2004 for the development of young athletes. The academy has produced athletes who have gone on to compete at the highest level, including Olympic and world champion high jumper Mutaz Barshim, as well as Almoez Ali and Akram Afif, the forwards at the centre of Qatar’s back-to-back Asian Cup wins.“Hosting the FIFA U-17 World Cup here in Qatar is really important. It’s part of a long-term plan for how football grows in this country, and it feeds straight back into the vision of the Aspire Academy. It supports the curriculum and the infrastructure in place, and all the hard work that goes into developing a player,” said Cahill.For Cahill, who has built a global reputation for youth development, the greatest value of the FIFA U-17 World Cup Qatar 2026 is the exposure it provides young players: “For these players, competitive fixtures against opponents of the same standard are a scarce resource, and the tournament provides a platform where they can showcase their talent in front of a global audience,” he added.In the 2025 edition, more than 130 scouts from top international clubs took advantage of the tournament’s centralised format to observe emerging talents up close from a single venue. Notably, the tournament served as a launch pad for rising stars including Egypt’s Hamza Abdelkarim, Mali’s Seydou Dembélé, Belgium’s Jesse Bisiwu and Nathan De Cat, and Italy’s Samuele Inacio.“Many of the participating U-17 players know that scouts from the biggest clubs are going to be here. They want to be in the spotlight and gain a broader perspective on professionalism by being tested in the biggest tournament in the world for their age group.”Tickets for the FIFA U-17 World Cup Qatar 2026 can be purchased at roadtoqatar.qa and delivered through Road to Qatar, the official ticketing app. Tickets are available as a Day Pass, allowing fans to attend multiple matches in a single day, with prices starting at QAR 20 per match day for the group stage through to Quarter-Finals. A Prime Pass, which reserves seats for high-demand matches, is priced at QAR 35 for the group stage through to Semi-Finals, and QAR 20 for the Third-place Play-off. Tickets for the Final at Ahmed bin Ali Stadium on 13 December are priced at QAR 30 in Category 1 and QAR 15 in Category 2. Accessibility Tickets are QAR 20 for all matches in the Aspire Zone, and QAR 15 for the Final, and include one complimentary companion ticket. Accessible seats can be purchased by emailing [email protected]. For tournament updates, visit roadtoqatar.qa and follow @u17worldcupqa on all major social media platforms.

UEFA demands answers from FIFA over Infantino presidency say reports

UEFA has sent a letter to FIFA seeking answers by November 2 about Gianni Infantino's presidency, including questions over the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) project and the FIFA Peace Prize, British media reported on Monday.European soccer's governing body UEFA has led calls for Infantino to resign since he proposed the now-abandoned FFE project, which involved creating a company to run the commercial interests of FIFA competitions, including the World Cup, and selling a minority stake to private investors.The 56-year-old, who is up for reelection next year, apologised to the FIFA Council last week and told attendees to submit any questions they had about his governance in writing so he could answer them at the next meeting on December 16.However, Sky Sports and other British media reported on Monday that UEFA General Secretary Theodore Theodoridis had written to his FIFA counterpart Mattias Grafstrom seeking a swift response to 42 questions covering 12 topics."These questions require answers now," Theodoridis wrote."They cannot be deferred until the next meeting of the FIFA Council - nor can future governance reforms substitute for scrutiny of decisions already taken and accountability for them."Reuters has not seen a copy of the letter."The FIFA Governance Regulations state that Council meetings and their associated documentation are confidential," a spokesperson for world soccer's governing body FIFA said."While FIFA intends to reply to questions submitted by its Council members it has no intention of breaching confidentiality by commenting on internal communication and/or documentation to media."FIFA considers respect for these Regulations to be a function of respect for the Council itself and for its individual members. FIFA will always maintain this respect and will not be drawn into any exchange with any third parties that undermines this."UEFA did not immediately respond to a request for comment.Infantino will stand for reelection in March 2027, with a November 18 deadline looming for potential candidates to submit their nominations.
