* Blatter: World Cup is part of football's heritage* Former FIFA president says the sport does not belong to any individual or institution* World Cup beneficiaries should ‌be the game, not investors  Former FIFA President Sepp ‌Blatter on Wednesday slammed the world football governing body's ‌plans to create ⁠a $20 billion ‌subsidiary to run the World Cup, ‌saying the tournament was not a commercial asset that belonged to ⁠a few executives. Blatter, who was FIFA president for 17 years until 2015, said the idea put forward by his successor Gianni Infantino would take commercialisation of the sport too far. "Football belongs to no individual and to no institution. It belongs to the people," Blatter, 90, told Reuters. "If FIFA were transferred into a profit-oriented ​corporate structure, it would lose its soul," he added, noting he would never have considered such a move when he was in charge.FIFA said on ‌Tuesday it plans to ⁠create the subsidiary ​to run the World Cup and its other events, and ​will offer stakes of up to 20% in it to external investors. The proposal has provoked a furious response from football authorities, including European ruling body UEFA, which said FIFA was putting the game up for sale.CLASHES WITH INFANTINO  Blatter has frequently clashed with Infantino, a fellow Swiss who took charge of FIFA in 2016 after a corruption scandal ended his own tenure. Blatter was later cleared of corruption charges. He has railed ‌against the expansion of this year's tournament to ⁠48 teams. "The FIFA World ⁠Cup is not a commercial asset that belongs to a handful of executives," Blatter said. "It is part of the cultural heritage of world football. "FIFA is the guardian of the World Cup, not its owner. There is a fundamental difference," he said.  Investors pursuing influence and profits ran contrary ​to associations that follow the interests of their members, he said, noting that the game's connection to the public had sustained it for more than a century. "That principle should never change," Blatter said. "Football's true foundations were the clubs, players, coaches, referees and fans," Blatter said, and FIFA's role is to administer the sport, organise competitions and redistribute income. "The beneficiaries should be the game itself - from grassroots football ‌to the highest ​international level - not outside investors seeking returns," Blatter said.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino reiterated that Iran will play their World Cup games in the United States as scheduled Thursday as he kicked off the global football body’s summit in Vancouver. Iran’s participation at this year’s tournament in Canada, Mexico and the United States has been shrouded in uncertainty since the eruption of war in the Middle East in February following strikes by the United States and Israel. Infantino, who has repeatedly stated that Iran will be at the World Cup, underscored that stance at the start of his address to delegates in Vancouver. “Let me start by the outset, confirming straightaway that of course Iran will be participating at the FIFA World Cup 2026,” Infantino said. “And of course, Iran will play (in) the United States of America.” Iranian officials had floated the idea of shifting their group games from the United States to Mexico, but that proposal had already been nixed by Infantino. In a further twist last week, Italy-born US special envoy Paolo Zampolli was reported to have floated the idea of Italy taking Iran’s World Cup place. The US government later distanced themselves from that proposal, with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio saying Iran’s footballers would be welcome. But the tension surrounding Iran’s World Cup participation rumbled into the build-up to Thursday’s FIFA Congress. Iran was the only absentee from the 211-member congress as Thursday’s meeting got under way after a clash with Canadian border officials earlier this week. 

FIFA President Gianni Infantino congratulated Qatar for qualifying for the 2026 World Cup. Infantino said this achievement comes after Qatar hosted the World Cup, which he described as the best edition ever, as Qatar qualified for the World Cup finals for the first time through direct qualifying. "After your historic hosting of the tournament in 2022, your team returns to the world stage, ready to demonstrate your growth and ambition, especially as this is the first time you have made it through the Asian qualifying competition. A great footballing achievement," Infantino said. He added, "Fans from Qatar will bring color and energy to North America in 2026, and all eyes will be on the next chapter of your football history." Infantino said this qualification represents a turning point in the history of Qatari football.
