As Qatar gears up to host the Prologue and opening race of the FIA World Endurance Championship for the third consecutive year, Lusail International Circuit is set to ignite the 2026 season with high-octane action.This pivotal role highlights Qatar’s expanding footprint in motorsport, with the Prologue – a mandatory two-day pre-season test from March 22 to 23 – allowing teams to dial in their machines before the Qatar 1812km curtain-raiser, a gruelling ten-hour battle on March 28.Entering its 14th season under the auspices of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) and Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO), FIA WEC remains the pinnacle of endurance racing, demanding speed, strategy and mechanical resilience across eight globe-trotting rounds.What truly sets FIA WEC apart is the diversity it offers, enabling fans to witness 14 major manufacturers battling on the same track at the same time.This incredible line-up of global brands, from established giants to exciting newcomers, creates unmatched competition in both the elite Hypercar class (LMH/LMDh prototypes) and production-based LMGT3 category, with 35 full-season entries in 2026 including 17 Hypercars and 18 LMGT3 cars.Eight of the 14 marques feature in the Hypercar division – Alpine, Aston Martin, BMW, Cadillac, Ferrari, Genesis, Peugeot and Toyota – while LMGT3 comprises Aston Martin, BMW, Corvette, Ferrari, Ford, Lexus, McLaren, Mercedes-AMG and Porsche.Notable grid shake-ups over the off-season include Porsche’s retreat from the Hypercar class, offset by Genesis Magma Racing’s debut with two GMR-001 prototypes on Oreca chassis’. Defending champion Ferrari AF Corse returns with the proven 499P, while Toyota Racing arrives hungry for redemption after a challenging 2025 campaign. The Japanese carmaker unveiled the updated TR010 Hybrid – its third major evolution – with key tweaks focusing on enhanced drivability, top speed and overall consistency, complemented by a striking new red, white and black livery inspired by the iconic GT One. The team has also rebranded from Toyota Gazoo Racing to simply Toyota Racing for 2026.Driver changes add intrigue, from two-time world champion and multiple 24 Hours of Le Mans winner Andre Lotterer’s comeback with newcomer Genesis, to Nick Cassidy’s Hypercar bow with Peugeot alongside Théo Pourchaire.Frenchman Victor Martins was recently confirmed for Alpine’s Hypercar effort as an FIA WEC rookie, following his stint in Formula 2 and as a Williams F1 development driver. Ex-F1 star and endurance legend, Sebastien Buemi competes for Toyota; the multiple world champion boasts the most race wins in the series’ history. Fellow former F1 driver Nyck de Vries similarly supplies speed and profile to Toyota’s quest for redemption. Cadillac has swapped Jenson Button for Jack Aitken, while ex-F1 talent Logan Sargeant will contest a full campaign in Proton’s Ford Mustang LMGT3 and Kevin Magnussen returns for a second consecutive season in the discipline as the Dane brings his experience to BMW’s Hypercar programme.Overall, Hypercar boasts 11 former FIA WEC champions and 14 ex-F1 drivers, blending experience with youth for a grid that’s stable yet spiced with potential upsets. As the series captivates global fans through hybrid innovation, tactical pit battles and marathons like Le Mans, Lusail International Circuit stands to deliver another exciting opener to kick off the 2026 campaign. 

The Qatar Motor and Motorcycle Federation (QMMF) has put the finishing touches to a challenging three-day route for the Qatar International Baja, taking place on November 6th-8th. The event is the seventh round of the FIA World Baja Cup, round three of the FIA Middle East Baja Cup and the sixth and penultimate round of the FIM Bajas World Cup. The iconic ‘Way to the World Cup’ landmark on Doha Corniche will be the backdrop for start and finish formalities for the first time. With a reputation as being one of the most demanding Baja events on the international calendar, the event offers tricky navigation, varied desert terrain and a mixture of gravel, rocky and sandy surfaces to ensure that drivers, navigators and riders are fully focused from the outset. Running under the chairmanship of QMMF President Abdulrahman Al-Mannai, QMMF’s Executive Director Amro Al-Hamad and board member Abdulrazaq Al-Kuwari, the event runs to a traditional Baja-type format with a short Prologue determining the starting order for the first of two stages in a total route of 773.83km through the Qatar desert. Administration and technical scrutineering will be based at the Lusail International Circuit on Tuesday, November 4th and Wednesday, November 5th. The circuit will also host the pre-event press conference at 18.00hrs on November 5th. Competitors will then tackle the opening Prologue of 10.66km, located 31.51km from the Lusail International Circuit, from 12.30hrs (first car 13.45hrs) on Thursday, November 6th. Teams and members of the media will then transfer to Doha for the ceremonial start by the ‘Way to the World Cup’ landmark from 18.20hrs (bikes) and 19.00hrs (cars). In a route devised by Clerk of the Course Pedro Almeida, his deputy Rashid Al-Sulaiti and their team, the opening stage on Friday, November 7th will be split into three timed parts of 67.38km, 32.32km and 118.55km by a pair of non-competitive neutralisation sections. The first bike starts the stage at 07.45hrs (first car - 09.40hrs) with all competitors tackling the same stage. Second stage action on Saturday, November 8th will be split into five timed sections of 35.14km, 12.05km, 33.35km, 39.95km and 108.31km by four neutralisations. The first bike will be live on stage at 07.15hrs (first car - 09.10hrs). The stage will finish in the spectacular dunes of the Sealine area of southern Qatar for the first time since the event replaced the Qatar Cross-Country Rally in 2022. Competitors will then return to the Doha Corniche and the ‘Way to the World Cup’ landmark for the post-event press conference (19.30hrs) and the podium ceremony and prize giving from 20.00hrs. The Baja is now an established event in the FIA and FIM calendars. The X-Raid Mini JCW Rally 3.01 crew of Denis Krotov and Konstantin Zhiltsov are the defending champions in the FIA Ultimate category. Last year, Anja Van Loon and Floor Maten prevailed in the Challenger section in a Can-Am Maverick X3, João Ferreira and Filipe Palmeiro topped the SSV standings in a Can-Am XRS Turbo RR and Abdullah Al-Rabban and Hassan Ali Obaid guided a Nissan Patrol to Stock honours. Emirati Mohammed Al-Balooshi (KTM) recorded his second win in four years on two wheels and Saudi Arabia’s Hani Al-Noumesi (Yamaha) won the quad class. Entries close at reduced rates on October 8th with a final cut-off set for October 22nd. Entrants in the FIA categories from the GCC will be offered a shipping allowance of $3,000, with international entrants receiving $6,000. Flight ticket allowances extend to $800 per GCC crew and $1,600 for overseas competitors. FIM entrants will receive $1,500 and $3,000 for shipping, respectively, and $400 or $800 towards air travel. Accommodation in a twin room for five nights with breakfast is available to FIA and FIM competitors, in addition to 5000 QAR start money for entries received before the first cut-off (2500 QAR – FIM) and 4000 QAR (2000 QAR – FIM) thereafter until the closure date. Qatari rally legend Nasser Saleh al-Attiyah added another golden chapter to his illustrious career by securing a record-breaking 20th FIA Middle East Rally Championship (MERC) title, following a gripping second-place finish at the Rally of Lebanon. Despite missing out on a potential victory in one of the most thrilling finales the Lebanese rally has seen in recent years, the veteran’s runner-up finish behind local hero Roger Feghali was enough to mathematically seal the championship with one round remaining in Cyprus. It was Feghali, the undisputed king of Lebanese tarmac, who ultimately claimed his record 18th Rally of Lebanon win after a titanic two-day battle with al-Attiyah. Driving his Toyota Yaris GR, Feghali trailed al-Attiyah by 6.7 seconds overnight but clawed his way back to within 1.4 seconds heading into the final stage. Al-Attiyah, competing in his Skoda Fabia RS run by Autotek Motorsport, looked set to edge out his rival until a slow right-rear puncture on the final stage dashed his hopes of a maiden Lebanon win. Feghali capitalised, clocking the fastest time on the final test to clinch victory by 9.2 seconds. “This is always a fantastic rally and it was a tremendous battle between myself and Roger,” said al-Attiyah. “We pushed hard all the way. I was obviously disappointed to have the puncture on the last stage, but it’s a great feeling to have won the championship now for the 20th time.” Crucially, Feghali was not registered for MERC points, allowing Al-Attiyah and his Spanish co-driver Candido Carrera to collect maximum regional points for a fifth consecutive rally. Carrera had already sealed the Co-drivers' Championship before the start of the event. This landmark title also marks a personal triumph for Autotek Motorsport’s Ken Skidmore, who has engineered all 20 of Al-Attiyah’s MERC titles. Skidmore's record also includes championship wins with the late Misfer al-Marri and the shared 2023 crown between al-Attiyah and Oman’s Abdullah al-Rawahi. Elsewhere, Qatar’s presence was felt across multiple categories in Lebanon. Mohammed Al-Marri, a graduate of the Qatar Motor and Motorcycle Federation (QMMF) Academy, continued his impressive MERC4 campaign, finishing ahead of India’s Payyakkal Panikkaveettil. With teammate Rashid al-Mohannadi having already secured the MERC4 title in absentia, al-Marri is now poised to complete a Qatari 1-2 in the championship. Veteran Nasser Khalifa al-Atya sealed the FIA Master MERC Driver title, finishing 15th overall alongside Lebanese co-driver Ziad Chehab in a Ford Fiesta. The pair also scored valuable points toward al-Atya’s push for a top-three finish in the overall standings. Chehab remains in contention for second in the Co-drivers’ Championship, behind Carrera.
