Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel stormed to victory in Tuesday's 26.1km individual time-trial at the Tour de France to shave valuable seconds off Tadej Pogacar's overall lead.Belgian Evenepoel, 26, blasted over the stage 16 course along the shores of Lake Geneva 28 seconds quicker than reigning champion Pogacar in second.Everyone else finished more than a minute back, with Dane Mattias Skjelmose taking third at 1min 04sec.That performance by the world and Olympic time-trial champion -- on Belgium's national holiday -- cut four-time Tour winner Pogacar's overall lead to 4min 32sec."It's amazing, it was a very nice TT (time-trial), a lot of people on the side of the road," said Evenepoel."My whole family from both sides being here, my parents came just today. My wife is here with her parents and the siblings as well."And also on the Belgian national day is pretty special -- I read this morning it's been a while since Belgium won on National Day, so I'm proud to be the one."It was Evenepoel's second successive stage victory after he triumphed on Sunday's mountainous 15th stage.It was his fourth Tour stage victory overall, and his third in time-trials.He also extended the gap to third-placed Isaac del Toro to more than two minutes.But it was a miserable day for Evenepoel's Red Bull-Bora Hansgrohe team-mate Florian Lipowitz.Two days after two-time former winner Jonas Vingegaard crashed out of the Tour while sitting second overall, German Lipowitz went down hard on a bend and was forced out of the race.He had been fifth overall until that point and had set the fourth fastest time in the three intermediate time-checks.But several minutes after he crashed, Lipowitz was escorted to a medical vehicle holding his left arm."That's very unfortunate, it's like a bittersweet pill to swallow with this victory, so I wish him all the best and I hope it's not too bad," Evenepoel said of his team-mate.Both Pogacar and Del Toro had a scare going through the same bend where Lipowitz fell but managed to stay upright. 'Mixed emotions' From the moment Evenepoel began his time-trial, it was clear he was on course to do something special.Once the top 10 contenders began their races against the clock, Skjelmose set the fastest time, well ahead of the best of the rest.Lipowitz, Del Toro and French teenage prodigy Paul Seixas were only a handful of seconds behind at the three time-checks.But when Evenepoel went through the first, it was clear that he was riding at a different pace.Only Pogacar could stay within potential touching distance but he was seven seconds down at the first time-check, with Skjelmose 22sec back.Those gaps ballooned to 14sec and 56sec by the second time-check.That was the uphill part of the course and was where Evenepoel gained most of his time.On the following descent and then a flat run to the finish, he gained only eight seconds on Skjelmose, 10 on Seixas and 13 on Pogacar."I think it was a really good execution from start to finish, he had good control," said Red Bull sporting director Klaas Lodewyck."It's mixed emotions, let's say. We're over the moon with the win from Remco, but the loss of Lipo was a big blow for the team."  

Double Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel's surprise decision to race in today's Tour of Flanders has spiced up the expected titanic battle against three of the peloton's fastest riders.Belgian Evenepoel and his Red Bull-BORA Hansgrohe team provided a twist on the April Fools theme on Wednesday when he made the shock announcement that he would be making his "De Ronde" debut.With world champion Tadej Pogacar coming back to defend his title, Mathieu van der Poel aiming for a record fourth success, and a resurgent Wout van Aert on the start line, fans are dreaming of a shoot-out between four of cycling's top stars.Evenepoel's biggest rivals are delighted that he will take part.Despite never previously having raced any of the major cobbled classics, Evenepoel knows these roads well having grown up in the Flanders region.And it is his attacking style of racing that has his rivals salivating."We definitely shouldn't underestimate Remco. And yes, I'm glad he's at the start," said Van der Poel, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest cobbled classics specialists of all time."The more strong riders there are, the faster the race opens up. That's not a disadvantage for me."Van Aert also feels that Evenepoel's inclusion could work in his favour."What I like about him, is that he's always attacking and he makes the race," said Van Aert."That's how I see myself, and that can work well."Evenepoel, whose form this season has been patchy, knows he has his work cut out to try to add his name to the list of Flanders laureates."Mathieu and Tadej are the big favourites: they've won five of the last six editions," said Evenepoel, who was a promising footballer and long-distance runner in his youth."But if I'm there, it's because I feel that I can win."'A relief'Should Van der Poel take the honours on Sunday, he would become the first rider to win De Ronde four times, and would match Belgian great Tom Boonen's record of seven cobbled Monument victories."Of course I'm aware of that, and it would be something very special," he said."But I approach the race with the same mindset as always: to try and win."If that eventually leads to a record, I will cherish it."Like his rivals, he has had a great start to the year, winning two cobbled classics in Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and E3 Saxo Classic, while coming close to another at In Flanders Fields.For Van Aert, Pogacar has the edge on Van der Poel, and both of them are head and shoulders above the competition at Flanders."We forget very quickly because Pogacar was ridiculously superior to everyone at Strade Bianche and Milan-San Remo," said the 31-year-old Belgian, whose only Monument victory came in San Remo in 2020."Tadej is super strong and Mathieu's record at Flanders speaks for itself."Van Aert has won a host of one-day classics in the past - if only one Monument - and came 100 metres from winning Dwars door Vlaanderen on Wednesday after a 40km breakaway.Pogacar is himself chasing history.Two weeks ago he won Milan-San Remo for the first time, meaning the only one of the five Monuments missing from his trophy cabinet is next week's Paris-Roubaix.Given that he will start as the favourite in three of the four remaining Monuments this season - and maybe too at Paris-Roubaix - he could yet become not just the fourth man to achieve the Grand Slam, but the first to do it in a single calendar year.And finally winning San Remo at the sixth attempt lifted a weight off his shoulders."Maybe I didn't realise before the race that it was a little bit bothering me," he said."I realised a few days after San Remo that it was a kind of relief... it was some sort of satisfaction to finally win it."
