The Embassy of Japan in Qatar, in collaboration with local cultural partners Geekdom and Nakama, successfully concluded the second edition of the Japan-Qatar Illustration Contest. The event culminated in a vibrant award ceremony held during "Geekend 2026," honouring the winning illustrations for their exceptional creativity and cross-cultural storytelling.Launched on July 19, this year’s contest invited talented artists of all skill levels to submit original artwork centred around the theme “Crossroads of Legends: My Original Japan-Qatar Hero/Heroine.” The initiative served as a powerful platform to deepen cultural ties between Japan and Qatar through the universal medium of art.Over 100 creative submissions were received across three distinct categories — Digital, Traditional, and U-13 (a dedicated children's category). A distinguished panel of guest judges selected the winning pieces.Naoto Hisajima, Japan's ambassador to Qatar, commended all participants for their exceptional creativity and expressed his sincere hope that initiatives like this would continue to strengthen the excellent bilateral relationship between Japan and Qatar.The first prize went to Sumam Azzam for his captivating piece titled “Where Sand Meets the Rising Sun”, depicting a mysterious wandering superhero named “Duneglass” who roams the world's great deserts and appears whenever people are threatened, becoming a silent guardian of the world's harshest landscapes.Mehdi Aouichaoui (MHDA), a French animator who has worked on multiple well-known Japanese anime productions, also participated as a special guest judge for the contest and sent a video message to the winners at the award ceremony.During the award ceremony at Geekend 2026, eight winners across 3 categories received exciting prizes generously provided by the event's sponsors: Teyseer Motors — Suzuki, Fnac Qatar, Daiso Japan, and Iwatani Corporation.The winning artworks can be viewed on the embassy’s website and social media platforms. 

Msheireb Museums, the French Institute of Qatar and the French Embassy in Qatar jointly organised Poetry Day, an evening of literature, cinema and cultural dialogue celebrating the work and legacy of the late Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish.The programme included a screening of the short film "An Orange from Jaffa", followed by a panel discussion on its inspirations.On the sidelines, Omar Khalifah, associate professor of history and chair of international history at Georgetown University in Qatar, told Gulf Times:"One of the greatest things about Mahmoud Darwish is that he developed so much throughout his career that it is impossible to talk about a single Mahmoud Darwish. There are multiple Mahmoud Darwishes; this is part of his significance for Palestinians. You can find Mahmoud Darwish as a common reference through which you can comment on multiple encounters and experiences that Palestinians go through. His vast repertoire of poetry allowed him to be that lens, a refuge that people go to, not necessarily to find meanings, because sometimes there is none. What is the meaning of this violence in Gaza? But to find solace, to find words as a refuge."Khalifah added: "I remember even before this genocide, the first Gaza war started in December 2008, only a few months after Mahmoud Darwish passed away in August 2008. I felt that absence so enormously. I felt at that moment I needed Mahmoud Darwish again, not to turn wounds into words, because sometimes it is impossible, but to give us a kind of refuge, some solace, to soothe us down, to make us feel that there is some meaning perhaps that will come after this. At that moment I felt that we are poetically orphaned because of Mahmoud Darwish's absence.""This acquired a greater meaning as years went by, culminating in the genocide that we are witnessing now without Mahmoud Darwish. One would wonder what Mahmoud Darwish would have written had he experienced it. Maybe he is lucky he did not experience this moment; he passed away before, but as Palestinians we always feel that we needed him to provide us with something," he concluded. 

Newly appointed Indian ambassador Dr K Srikar Reddy has pledged to build on the strong foundations of India-Qatar relations and further expand co-operation in emerging sectors, while making the welfare of the Indian community in Qatar – estimated at more than 830,000 – a key priority during his tenure.He was speaking at the Indian Cultural Centre at a reception organised by the apex bodies under the aegis of the Indian embassy as well as other Indian organisations in Qatar.Community leaders, office bearers of the apex bodies, members of various organisations and a large number of community members took part in the event.Presidents of the four apex bodies addressed the gathering and welcomed the new envoy.“I have arrived at an important juncture in bilateral relations between both the countries, following the elevation of India-Qatar ties to a strategic partnership,” Dr Reddy said. “It is a great honour to assume the charge as ambassador of India to Qatar. I accept this with great humility and a sense of responsibility.”**media[491522]**Expressing appreciation for the work of his predecessor, the envoy said he intends to build on the foundations already laid and take forward initiatives announced during meetings between His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.“India and Qatar have long-standing ties rooted in civilisational contacts, maritime trade and people-to-people relations,” Dr Reddy said. “That co-operation has expanded in recent years across trade, investment, energy, healthcare, education, culture and tourism.”He also noted significant potential for further co-operation in both traditional and emerging areas, including renewable energy, green hydrogen, digital public infrastructure, artificial intelligence (AI), fintech and space.The envoy said India is seeking partners such as Qatar to contribute to its ambition of becoming a developed nation by 2047.“We see significant opportunities for deepening and expanding our co-operation in a variety of areas,” he said, adding that he looks forward to working with academics, business leaders and professionals to identify new areas of collaboration.Dr Reddy placed strong emphasis on the Indian community's role in strengthening bilateral ties, describing its members as a “living bridge” between India and Qatar.He said the community had earned the trust and appreciation of Qatar’s leadership through its hard work, discipline, innovation and law-abiding nature.“The Indian community has made a significant contribution to Qatar’s development across sectors including healthcare, education, engineering, technology and construction,” Dr Reddy noted.He said that the embassy would work closely with Indian community organisations to address the welfare needs of community members, particularly those considered vulnerable.According to the envoy, improving consular services will be another priority, and the embassy will serve as a “home away from home” for Indians living in Qatar.Dr Reddy said that he had already taken steps to increase the number of daily appointment slots for consular services at the Indian Cultural Centre and Indian Community Benevolent Forum. 

 The embassy of Pakistan in Doha organised a talk on Seerat-un-Nabi to commemorate the blessed life and teachings of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).The keynote address was delivered by Dr Zakaryya Mohamed Abdel-Hady, associate professor of Islamic Thought and Culture at Qatar University’s College of Sharia and Islamic Studies.The event was chaired by Pakistan’s ambassador to Qatar Muhammad Aamer, who also addressed the gathering.The talk was attended by a large number of members of the Pakistani diaspora, students, prominent academicians, ambassadors and representatives of the diplomatic corps in Qatar.Dr Abdel-Hady highlighted the importance of following the principles of mercy, as taught by the Prophet.Aamer emphasised the role of such gatherings in strengthening spiritual bonds within the community and promoting interfaith harmony.The event concluded with prayers for the progress and prosperity of Pakistan and the Muslim Ummah. 

The Indian community, led by Ambassador Vipul, paid rich tributes Wednesday to late His Highness the Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, and offered condolences to His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, the royal family, and the people of Qatar on the passing of HH the late Father Amir.A large number of Indian community members, community leaders, and diplomats from the Indian embassy took part in the community condolence meeting held at the Ashoka Hall of the Indian Cultural Centre (ICC).The event, organised by the apex bodies under the aegis of the Indian embassy in Doha, saw the hall and nearby areas overflowing with community members, a true reflection of the love and respect for the departed leader.The meeting started with the observance of silence for a minute to pay respect to HH the late Father Amir, and a mourning note was read out by ICC general secretary Abraham Joseph, who highlighted that HH Sheikh Hamad leaves behind a legacy that helped shape modern Qatar and transform its lives with his kindness, generosity, wisdom and compassion.A short video highlighting HH the late Father Amir's visits to India and his interactions with various Indian leaders was screened on the occasion.Ambassador Vipul, in his address, highlighted that India and the Indian community in Qatar will always cherish the love and support given by HH Sheikh Hamad.“I have heard many stories of his love and compassion for the common people, particularly from India, as also his connect with India that we could see during his multiple visits to India,” the envoy said.“I had the good fortune and privilege of attending the meetings of our leaders with HH the Father Amir over the last several years, and what was remarkable in all these meetings was his love for India,” Vipul said. “He was always very gracious and held the Indian community in very high esteem, always had good words to say about India and the Indian community in Qatar.”The envoy noted that India observed one day of national mourning, declared in honour of HH the late Father Amir, during which the national flag was flown at half-mast across the country on all official buildings and at embassies abroad, and there was no official entertainment on that day.Vipul also noted that Indian Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs Kiran Rijiju had come personally to Qatar to offer condolences to HH the Amir.Presidents of all four apex bodies under the embassy also spoke on the occasion.ICC president A P Manikantan, Indian Community Benevolent Forum president Shanavas Bava, Indian Sports Centre president E P Abdulrahman, and Indian Business and Professional Council president Taha Muhammed shared their thoughts on HH the late Father Amir and his extraordinary vision to take the country to great development and prosperity.They also recalled his affection and love for India and how the Indian community under his reign grew and contributed to the country's development.Several other prominent leaders and community members shared their thoughts, highlighting that the bond between Qatar and India remains very strong and cordial, and that HH the late Father Amir was instrumental in developing this cordial relationship between the two countries. 

The Malaysia embassy in Doha recently organised the “Malaysian Community’s Blood Donation Drive” at the Qatar National Blood Donation Centre. Held under the theme Your Blood, Their Hope, the initiative was organised in collaboration with the Malaysian Association of Qatar (MAQ), Qatar Blood Donation Services, and Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC). The programme received an encouraging response from the Malaysian community, with approximately 100 Malaysians residing in Qatar signing up to participate in the humanitarian initiative. The event was attended by Malaysian ambassador Faizal Razali, who was welcomed by Blood Donation Centre director Salwa Mohammed al-Khamisi.Also present was MAQ president Dr Mohd Faris Khamidi, embassy officials and members of the Malaysian community in Qatar. Razali expressed appreciation to all Malaysians who participated in the initiative and highlighted the importance of community support and compassion in helping save lives. He also extended his appreciation to the HMC, Qatar Blood Donation Services, MAQ, volunteers, and all parties involved for their support and co-operation in ensuring the success of the programme. 

Indian Cultural Centre, under the aegis of the Embassy of India, organised a felicitation ceremony on May 18 at ICC Ashoka Hall to honour the Grade 10 and 12 CBSE toppers from various CBSE schools in Qatar. Indian ambassador Vipul attended the event as the chief guest.**media[448563]**ICC general-secretary Abraham K Joseph welcomed the guests and dignitaries followed by opening remarks by ICC head of HR, Admin and Consular, Rakesh Wagh. Addressing the students, Vipul congratulated them on their outstanding achievement and extended his best wishes for their future pursuits. ICC president A P Manikantan congratulated the students and acknowledged the dedication and support of teachers and parents in shaping their success. ICC Advisory Council chairman P N Babu Rajan was also present on the occasion. The evening concluded with a vote of thanks by ICC vice president Shantanu Deshpande. The event was seamlessly hosted by Drishti. 

 The Embassy of Moldova in Doha recently hosted an ‘Art, Fashion and Cultural Diplomacy (AFCD)’ exhibition, featuring around 100 artworks to mark Europe Day and World Hat Walk 2026.The exhibition was attended by Moldovan ambassador Iulian Grigorita, ambassadors of Romania, Kazakhstan, Vietnam, Ukraine, and Central Africa, AFCD founder and patron Farhan al-Sheikh al-Sayed, and its secretary-general, Rodica Grigorita. Heads of Mission of Albania and Honduras also attended the opening.A fashion show was held, with models and guests wearing handmade hats by AFCD members, commemorating the World Hat Walk 2026.Live music concert was performed by renowned celebrities Georgio Martin and Anca Martin.The AFCD group has around 50 members, comprising ambassadors, spouses of ambassadors, diplomats and their children. 

A man who last year tried to enter Israel's London embassy armed with two knives and carrying a "martyrdom note" was yesterday convicted in ‌a London court of preparing an act of ​terrorism.Abdullah Albadri, 34, a ‌failed asylum seeker from Kuwait, attempted to breach ‌the embassy's ⁠perimeter in ‌April 2025 because he wanted to ‌send a message about "the killing of children", prosecutors said at ⁠his trial this month.Albadri denied charges of preparing an act of terrorism and possession of two bladed articles, telling police he had the knives because he was homeless, but a jury found him guilty yesterday.The verdicts came two days after two Jewish men were stabbed in ​north London in what police described as a suspected terrorist incident, adding to heightened fears within Britain's Jewish community.Last month, a pro-Iranian group ‌claimed online that it targeted ⁠the embassy ​with drones carrying "dangerous substances". Police later said they found ​no hazardous substances.Albadri was arrested by two armed officers as he tried to scale the fence outside the embassy in west London last April. Prosecutors said he later told police he wanted to send a message about stopping the war, a reference to the Israeli-Hamas conflict in Gaza."The prosecution say that Mr Albadri's intention was to use or threaten serious violence against the Israeli government, ‌to exact revenge for its ‌alleged murder of children," ⁠Catherine Pattison told jurors at the Old Bailey.Pattison said Albadri ⁠had arrived in ⁠Britain via a small boat on two occasions and most recently entered the country in April last year, when he applied for asylum, claiming he faced risks in Kuwait as a human rights activist.However, exchanges on his phone showed his asylum ​claim was rejected later that month, after which his intention began to shift to "far more sinister matters" and he started searching for the location of the Israeli embassy, Pattison said.Commander Helen Flanagan, head of Counter Terrorism Policing London, said the Israeli embassy has faced a number of security alerts but police "continuously review and strengthen protective security plans to ensure the site ‌and the ​wider community is kept as safe as possible". 

His Excellency the Minister of Municipality Abdullah bin Hamad bin Abdullah al-Attiyah met Monday with charge d’affaires at the United States Embassy in Qatar Mo Barghouty. Discussions during the meeting dealt with co-operation relations between the two countries in areas of common interest.
