Honda announced on Thursday its first operational loss since 1957 after a major overhaul of its electric vehicle strategy in the United States.Japan's number two automaker after Toyota said that its operating loss last year of 414.3bn yen ($2.6bn) came after huge accounting charges in its EV operations.Honda also reported a net loss of 423.9bn yen, which according to Bloomberg News was the first since it began disclosing consolidated results in 1977.For this year, Honda projected net profit of 260bn yen and operating income of 500bn yen -- higher than market expectations -- sending its shares at one point almost eight percent higher.Honda announced in March that it was cancelling the launch and development of certain EV models in the United States, resulting in impairment and other charges of 2.5tn yen ($16bn).Honda blamed a "government policy shift" by US President Donald Trump's administration, including import tariffs and the scrapping of tax incentives for EV buyers.It also said that there was a "decline in competitiveness" of Honda products in China and other Asian countries.Other Japanese automakers are also suffering, squeezed by US tariffs, the Middle East war and fierce competition from Chinese rivals.Toyota, the world's largest carmaker by unit sales, forecast last week a 22% drop in net income this fiscal year, albeit from $25bn last.Nissan -- which is closing factories and cutting thousands of jobs -- on Wednesday reported a net loss of $3.4bn for last year, but forecast a return to profit."The major difference with Nissan is that while Nissan's product strength and brand power are significantly weak and recovery is not foreseeable, Honda's loss is a one-time, massive loss due to a change in strategy," said Tatsuo Yoshida, analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence."Its ICE (internal combustion engine) and HEV (hybrid electric) products are strong, and its brand power is high. Profitability in motorcycles and finance is good," Yoshida said before the announcement of Honda's earnings.Japan agreed to invest $550bn in the United States by 2029 in return for slashing threatened tariffs of 25% to 15%.The promises remain valid even after the US Supreme Court struck down US President Donald Trump's global tariffs in February and he imposed a new blanket 10% duty. 

Qatar and Türkiye have warned that any return to military operations in the region would carry grave consequences for global security, energy markets, and the world economy, and have jointly pledged their full backing to Pakistan's mediation aimed at securing a ceasefire and reopening the Strait of Hormuz.The warning came at a joint press conference in Doha between His Excellency the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohamed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani and the Foreign Minister of Türkiye, Hakan Fidan.The prime minister described the regional situation as "delicate and critical," citing the ongoing war involving Iran and the escalating tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, where disruptions have affected freedom of navigation and global trade routes. He said Qatar and Türkiye jointly support Pakistan's diplomatic initiative to restore calm "as quickly as possible," including reopening the Strait and ensuring the free flow of international maritime traffic.Discussions with Fidan, he said, focused heavily on the economic and security implications of the crisis for the Gulf, particularly the impact on global energy markets and regional stability. The talks also covered the worsening humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, continued Israeli bombardment, allegations of forced displacement policies in the occupied territories, and delays in implementing agreements on the unconditional delivery of humanitarian aid. The PM also pointed to ongoing Israeli strikes on residential areas in Lebanon and repeated threats to evacuate civilians, stressing that rapidly evolving developments demand close coordination among allied and friendly nations, particularly Türkiye.He said Qatar was continuing to coordinate with GCC partners and regional states to formulate diplomatic solutions capable of restoring stability, especially concerning future engagement with Iran, underlining that many unresolved regional issues would require sustained diplomatic dialogue in the coming phase rather than military confrontation.Describing relations between Qatar and Türkiye as "strong and strategic," he noted that co-operation has expanded significantly in politics, trade, energy, and military affairs under the leadership of both nations.Fidan said he had conveyed greetings from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani during a meeting the previous day, where both sides exchanged views on regional developments.He stressed that current events demand "greater consultation and solidarity" among regional countries, reaffirming Ankara's full backing for Pakistan's mediation and its readiness to provide all possible support to prevent another outbreak of military operations. War, he warned, would destabilise the Middle East and trigger widespread global instability and destruction.Any closure of the Strait of Hormuz, Fidan added, would threaten global energy security, international trade routes, and broader political and economic stability."The world is looking toward an agreement that guarantees freedom of navigation and reopens the Strait," he said.He urged the international community not to overlook developments in Gaza, accusing Israel of continuing what he termed "genocidal policies" in Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon, and Syria, and arguing that Israeli expansionist policies have driven significant civilian casualties, displacement, and ongoing refugee crises across the region.Global criticism of Israel, he said, has been growing steadily, including sanctions and punitive measures introduced by several European countries, and he predicted that international public opinion would become increasingly critical of Israeli policies in the coming months.Both officials repeated their warning against renewed escalation and insisted that the Strait of Hormuz must never be used as a political pressure tool, stressing that the waterway is an international maritime corridor whose security and freedom of navigation must be protected by the international community.Responding to questions, the PM said Qatar fully supports Pakistan's efforts to reach a political settlement and believes all issues related to Iran's nuclear programme should be resolved through diplomacy rather than confrontation. The main challenges, he pointed out, lie in setting priorities and formulating understandings that can serve as a foundation for a comprehensive agreement. A return to war, he warned, would only lead to further destruction.His recent visit to the US, he said, focused primarily on emphasising support for Pakistan's diplomatic initiative and encouraging all parties to engage constructively to secure a rapid resolution, while also providing an opportunity to discuss with US officials the repercussions of the war on the region and the world. He praised Pakistan's role as "significant and important" in efforts to secure a ceasefire, noting that Gulf states, including Qatar, are among those most directly affected by the conflict's consequences.Fidan described Pakistan's role as "critical and decisive" for both the region and the wider world, given the implications for global energy supplies and maritime security. He reaffirmed continued Qatari-Turkish coordination to support mediation and stabilise a ceasefire as quickly as possible, noting that both countries enjoy exceptionally strong relations across all fields and have overcome every challenge involved.Fidan reiterated Türkiye's rejection of any attempt to use the Strait of Hormuz as a pressure tool against Gulf states, stressing that any future threat to maritime navigation in the Strait should be met with a "firm international response." Israel, he said, seeks to address crises through violence and expansion — a policy that is no longer merely a regional problem but one that has become an issue for global security. 

The Ministry of Justice has unveiled a new electronic system to manage its internal audit operations, marking Global Internal Audit Awareness Month with a launch event held in collaboration with the State Audit Bureau.The event was held under the patronage of His Excellency the Minister of Justice and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs Ibrahim bin Ali al-Mohannadi, and attended by His Excellency the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Justice Saeed bin Abdullah al-Suwaidi.According to the ministry, the platform is intended to bolster governance, sharpen internal oversight and feed into its broader digital transformation push by streamlining how audit observations are recorded and followed up.Director of the Internal Audit Department Najla Fahed Dalwan said the system had been developed in response to rising governance demands and the need to shift from manual workflows to a single digital framework that improves efficiency, accuracy and risk management. She also underlined the importance of Internal Audit Awareness Month as a vehicle for promoting transparency, integrity and sound governance within public institutions.Aisha Khalid al-Darwish, acting director of internal audit and risk oversight at the State Audit Bureau, delivered a lecture on how internal audit contributes to institutional performance and strengthens governance and risk management systems.The ministry rounded off the programme with an interactive workshop examining the role of internal audit departments in government entities and the mechanisms for co-operation between them.

Hamad Medical Corporation ( HMC) has wrapped up its clinic operations for the 2025-26 winter camping season in the Sealine area. The clinic was open throughout the camping period, from October 16, 2025 to April 11, 2026, marking the sixteenth year in a row that this service has been provided. During this season, 1,680 patients of various ages and nationalities received medical care, including both visitors and campers in the Sealine area. Of these, 291 patients were treated directly at HMC’s Sealine clinic, 692 cases required transfer to HMC hospitals by ambulance or air ambulance, and 697 patients received onsite treatment and necessary medical procedures from HMC emergency medical teams. The Sealine clinic operated weekly: every Thursday and Friday from 2pm-2am, and Saturdays from 10am-10pm throughout the season. This schedule ensured essential healthcare services for beach visitors and campers. Meanwhile, emergency departments at HMC hospitals stayed on high alert to handle cases that required hospital transfers. The clinic treated a range of mild to moderate medical cases, including colds, gastrointestinal infections, burns, and minor injuries. These were handled directly at the clinic, which was equipped with the necessary medical devices and medications for such emergencies. Critical cases were promptly transferred to hospitals by ambulance or LifeFlight, depending on the specific needs of each patient. During operating hours, the clinic was staffed by a doctor and a nurse under the supervision of a medical officer. It was fully stocked with all necessary medical supplies and medications. Additionally, an air ambulance landing area was located next to the clinic. The opening of the clinic was supported by ongoing coverage from HMC’s Ambulance Service. This included the permanent deployment of two standard ambulances and two four-wheel-drive ambulances for transporting patients from sand dune areas to the clinic, a standard ambulance, or the air ambulance landing site, as needed. On weekends, school holidays, and special occasions, the Ambulance Service increased its presence in the Sealine camping area to six standard ambulances and five four-wheel-drive ambulances, providing effective emergency response across the sand dunes with speed and flexibility. Additionally, HMC’s Ambulance Service, during the camping season, offered LifeFlight services and deployed a team of medical professionals including paramedics, critical care paramedics, rapid response paramedics, supervisors, communications officers, and operations officers. Staff assignments were organised according to command and control system plans for events and daily operations, developed by Emergency Preparedness and Events Planning within the Ambulance Service, in alignment with the camping season’s medical coverage objectives.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Saturday British warplanes were involved in "defensive operations" in Middle East skies but the UK had "played no role" in the US-Israeli attack on Iran.In his first public response to the strikes, which triggered missile launches from Tehran, Starmer said that Britain's operations were separate from the attack on Iran and "in line with international law"."The United Kingdom played no role in these strikes," he said in a short televised statement."As part of our commitments to the security of our allies in the Middle East we have a range of defensive capabilities in the region — which we've recently taken steps to strengthen," the UK leader added."Our forces are active and British planes are in the sky today as part of coordinated regional defensive operations to protect our people, our interests and our allies."Starmer spoke after holding an emergency meeting with senior UK ministers and officials and separate talks with European counterparts, in response to the evolving conflict in the Middle East.In his comments, he argued Iran "can end this now" and that Tehran "should refrain from further strikes, give up their weapons programmes, and cease the appalling violence and repression against the Iranian people"."That is the route to de-escalation and back to the negotiating table," Starmer said.Earlier, his government warned the military strikes against Iran could blow up into a broader regional conflict, while adding the UK's "immediate priority" was the safety of its citizens in the region.In a message on X, the Foreign Office urged its citizens in Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and United Arab Emirates to "immediately shelter in place" because of reported missile attacks on sites in those countries.The ministry also updated its travel advice to urge "against all travel to Israel and Palestine".Meanwhile British Airways was among the airlines to say it has cancelled flights to and from Tel Aviv and Bahrain for several days, and its Saturday flight to Amman, because of the US-Israel airstrikes and Iran's retaliation.Wizz Air, which also flies to the region from Britain, confirmed that it was suspending all flights to and from Israel, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Amman "with immediate effect up until and including March 7"."Flights to and from Saudi Arabia will be cancelled up until and including March 2," it added, noting it was "closely monitoring developments". 

Tiger Woods says he has no timetable for a return to golf, but the 15-time major champion hasn't ruled out the 2026 Masters even as he ponders the over-50s Champions Tour.Woods, who turned 50 on December 30, underwent disc replacement surgery in October, the latest in a series of operations and injuries that have kept him sidelined since the 2024 British Open."It's just one of those things where it's each and every day, I keep trying, I keep progressing," Woods said at The Riviera Country Club, where he hosts this week's PGA Tour Genesis Invitational."I keep working on it, trying to get stronger, trying to get more endurance in this body and trying to get it at a level at which I can play at the highest level again," Woods said, adding that he has progressed from chipping and putting practice to hitting full shots."I'm able to," he said. "Not well every day, but I can hit them."Despite the uncertainty, Woods said when asked that the Masters, April 9-12 at Augusta National, was not "off the table."Woods has won five Masters titles, the most recent an epic 2019 victory that ended his 11-year major championship drought.He suffered severe leg injuries in a 2021 car crash but returned at the 2022 Masters and finished 47th.The veteran superstar had a back operation in September 2024 and was rehabilitating from that setback when he announced in March of 2025 that he had suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon.Woods said the Achilles injury was no longer an issue, but the disc replacement - on top of multiple back surgeries over the years - was proving challenging to come back from.A new decade"I've had a fused back and now a disc replacement, so it's challenging," he said. "And now I entered a new decade, so that number is starting to sink in and has us thinking about the opportunity to be able to play in a cart."That's something that, as I said, I won't do out here on this (PGA) tour because I don't believe in it. But on the Champions Tour, that's certainly that opportunity."Even as he strives to ready himself for a return to competition, Woods said he has been devoting a tremendous amount of time as chair of the PGA Tour's Future Competition Committee created to help shape a new-look tour."I thought I spent a lot of hours practicing in my prime," Woods said. "It doesn't even compare to what we've done in the boardroom."Woods said he hopes to see the PGA Tour implement a revamped schedule in 2027, although he acknowledged it could take two years to roll out all of the changes.He envisions a more streamlined schedule, with "more top players playing" - all in a system that still offers opportunities to young talent and keeps sponsors engaged.The time-consuming work means Woods has yet to make up his mind about whether he'd be willing to captain the 2027 US Ryder Cup team, although he said the PGA of America had been in touch."They have asked me for my input on it, and I haven't made my decision yet," he said."I'm trying to figure out what we're trying to do with our tour. That's been driving me hours upon hours every day and trying to figure out if I can actually do our team, our Team USA and our players and everyone that's going to be involved in the Ryder Cup, if I can do it justice with my time." 

The death toll from the collapse of residential buildings in ‌the Lebanese city of Tripoli rose ‌to 15 after search ‍and rescue operations ended, Lebanon's National News Agency said Monday citing the civil ⁠defence chief.  Civil defence director general Imad Khreiss said ‍rescue teams rescued eight people from the rubble of the collapsed buildings in the northern city's Bab al-Tabbaneh neighbourhood. Officials said on Sunday that two adjoining buildings had collapsed. Abdel Hamid Karimeh, head of Tripoli's municipal council, said he could not ‌confirm how many people remained missing.  Earlier, the head of Lebanon's civil defence rescue service said the two buildings ‍were home to 22 ⁠residents. A number ‌of aging residential buildings have collapsed in Tripoli, Lebanon's second-largest city, in recent weeks, highlighting deteriorating infrastructure and years of neglect, state media reported, citing municipal officials.  Karimeh said the issue of unsafe buildings in Tripoli was longstanding and driven by multiple factors, including construction violations, years of disorder, weak oversight and a lack of regular maintenance, partly linked to restrictive ​rent control laws that ‌discourage owners from investing in repairs.  He said many buildings in the ⁠city were ‍between 60 and 70 years old and had exceeded their structural lifespan without undergoing essential maintenance, increasing the risk of collapse.  The problem, he added, exceeded the capacity of the municipality and residents alone, calling for ​direct state intervention. Authorities have begun providing temporary shelter to displaced families, while Lebanon's Higher Relief Committee is offering housing allowances for up to three months, Karimeh said. He added that charities, the Ministry of Social Affairs and international organisations were co-ordinating to provide assistance, saying the aim was to secure a minimum ⁠acceptable level of support for affected households.

The ninth Doha International Maritime Defence Exhibition and Conference (Dimdex 2026), said Qatar Amiri Naval Force commander His Excellency Staff Major-General (Navy) Abdullah bin Hassan al-Sulaiti, is a forum for innovation, offering the latest maritime defence technologies alongside supporting systems critical to military operations. Speaking at the opening ceremony, His Excellency Staff Major-General al-Sulaiti emphasised the importance of defence exhibitions in equipping armed forces with the capabilities needed to safeguard sovereignty and national security. The four-day event, held under the theme A Global Hub for Defence Innovation – Invest in Possibilities to Shape a Secure Tomorrow, highlights the role of naval defence in regional and global security. The exhibition also serves as a platform for senior military leaders, academics, and experts to discuss emerging issues in maritime defence and security through the Middle East Naval Commanders Conference. The event, HE Staff Major-General al-Sulaiti said, reflects Qatar’s commitment to diplomatic solutions, regional co-operation, and joint security initiatives. More than 200 international, regional, and national companies are taking part in the event, showcasing advanced technologies including cybersecurity, anti-piracy systems, artificial intelligence (AI), unmanned systems, and C5ISR (Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Cyber, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance) solutions. The exhibition has attracted a record 110 high-level official delegations from all over the world. The first day saw the official opening of the naval ship display at Hamad Port, which received eight visiting warships from six countries, including Qatar’s multi-role warship Al-Fulk, the largest of its kind in the Gulf region. Several defence-related contracts, memoranda of understanding, and strategic agreements in the field of maritime defence were signed during the opening of Dimdex 2026, in the presence of His Excellency the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Defence Affairs Sheikh Saud bin Abdulrahman bin Hassan al-Thani. The Middle East Naval Commanders Conference is organised in partnership with Joaan Bin Jassim Academy for Defence Studies, under the theme of defence diplomacy and maritime security challenges. Over the following days, exhibitors will hold specialised workshops demonstrating their latest defence innovations and technologies.
