Newcastle have appointed Matthias Jaissle as their new head coach following Eddie Howe's departure, the English Premier League club announced.The 38-year-old Jaissle, a former Germany Under-21 international, was previously in charge of Saudi side Al-Ahli but has no prior experience of managing a top-flight club."It is an incredible honour to become head coach of Newcastle United," said Jaissle. "This is one of the biggest clubs in European football, with a unique history, identity and supporter base, and I am excited to experience that passion and connection first-hand. When Newcastle United comes your way, you take notice. The ambition of the club, the vision for the future and the opportunity ahead made this an incredibly compelling place to be. I have followed the club's journey closely in recent years and the progress that has been made is clear for everyone to see."Jaissle was forced to end his playing career due to injury at the age of 25. His first managerial job came with Austrian side Liefering, whom he led to a second-placed finish in the second tier, the club's joint best-ever position.Jaissle took charge at Red Bull Salzburg in 2021, winning successive Austrian titles as well as the Austrian Cup. Jaissle joined Al-Ahli in 2023 and led them to AFC Champions League titles in 2025 and 2026.Although not a high-profile manager, he is well-known to Newcastle's majority owner, the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund, which bought a controlling share in four Pro League clubs, including Al Ahli, in 2023.Newcastle chief executive David Hopkinson said: "Matthias is one of the most exciting and highly regarded young coaches in football and I'm thrilled to welcome him to Newcastle United. We have conducted a thorough process, and he has emerged as the clear candidate for the role. He possesses all the qualities we were looking for."Jaissle has a tough task ahead of him given the way Howe, in his five years at Newcastle, revitalised a club that had struggled for decades.Howe replaced Steve Bruce in November 2021 and won the League Cup in March 2025 -- beating Liverpool in the final to clinch the northeast side's first major trophy since 1969.The former Bournemouth boss also led Newcastle to Champions League qualification in 2023 and 2025. But hampered by star striker Alexander Isak's protracted move to Liverpool, the Englishman came under pressure as the Magpies finished 12th in the Premier League last season, with 17 defeats in their 38 games.Newcastle reached the Champions League last 16 but were hammered 8-3 on aggregate by Barcelona. The club have since been depleted by the close-season departures of Italy midfielder Sandro Tonali to Tottenham and England forward Anthony Gordon to Barcelona, with Howe reportedly frustrated at losing several of his best players in order that Newcastle could comply with Premier League profit and sustainability rules.Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes is also set to leave St James' Park after reports earlier Wednesday that Premier League champions Arsenal had agreed a £75mn ($101mn) deal to sign the Brazil midfielder.The Magpies begin the 2026/27 Premier League season at home to Liverpool on August 23, with an upbeat Jaissle insisting: "I am incredibly excited about the future. I fully and unreservedly believe in this project, the ambition and the direction the club is taking. There is a clear vision, strong leadership and an exceptional platform to build on." 

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso said on Tuesday "no decision" had been made on Mykhailo Mudryk's future but added the winger could play in pre-season after returning from a doping ban.Ukrainian international Mudryk was suspended for four years after failing a 2024 drug test, but has won an appeal and was permitted on Friday to resume his football career.The 25-year-old has not played since November 2024 and there have been rumours that Chelsea could sanction a loan move to bring him up to speed, or even a permanent transfer.Asked about those possibilities in Hong Kong on Tuesday ahead of his side's friendly against Juventus, Alonso said: "No decision made."Everything has happened so quick, so the main thing is that we were thinking about the person, to feel that he was back in the group dynamic, part of the team."And we need to assess, but for sure... it is a special case with him, so we need to be sensitive."Mudryk's ban came after testing positive for a low concentration of the prohibited substance meldonium.He filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport, and rule changes in the interim mean that if his test produced the same result now, he would not have faced charges.Asked if Mudryk could play in Wednesday's game against Juventus, Alonso answered in the affirmative."Yesterday was more about the feelings, about the emotions to be back with the team, more than to assess the fitness level," the Spaniard said."But yes, he could play. Maybe 90 minutes (is) too early. But he can be selected."Mudryk took part in an open training session at Hong Kong's Kai Tak Stadium on Tuesday evening, drawing a loud cheer from fans when he found the net in a drill.Alonso said he was also "looking forward to welcoming" Jordan Henderson after the England midfielder signed from Premier League rivals Brentford on Monday.However, "we need to assess because of the injury he had, how long it will take to be fit".Henderson broke his arm in a freak injury sustained while celebrating England's win over Mexico at the World Cup.The 36-year-old has followed international teammate Danny Welbeck, 35, to Stamford Bridge, in a shift from the Blues' long-held strategy of snapping up younger talent on lengthy contracts.Juventus are looking to improve on last season's disappointing sixth-placed finish in Serie A and announced the signing of Bosnian teenager Kerim Alajbegovic on Sunday alongside the return of French striker Randal Kolo Muani to the club."To have new players in our team, we are very (happy) about them. We have needed them for a long time," manager Luciano Spalletti told a news conference on Tuesday."We know they are strong, and we just need to make them settle," he said through an interpreter.Chelsea's pre-season tour so far has comprised two friendlies in Australia - a see-saw 6-4 win over Western Sydney Wanderers and a 2-1 defeat to London rivals Tottenham.After Juventus, they play Italian giants AC Milan in Jakarta and Johor Darul Ta'zim in Malaysia before heading home for a final warm-up against Spain's Real Sociedad.They face Fulham at Craven Cottage in their opening league game on August 24.Juventus travel to Australia for friendlies against fellow Italians Inter Milan and Palermo before kicking off the Serie A season with a trip to Frosinone on August 23. 

Brazil striker Richarlison scored a 90th-minute winner and club record signing Sandro Tonali got his first goal as 10-man Tottenham beat London rivals Chelsea 2-1 in a feisty pre-season friendly in Sydney on Saturday.Both sides fielded strong line-ups and Spurs struck first on 19 minutes through Tonali's deflected strike before Estevao levelled the scores barely two minutes later.Tottenham defender Kevin Danso was given a straight red card just three minutes after coming off the bench at the break for bringing down Joao Pedro, with Chelsea dominating proceedings in the second half.But in front of 80,363 fans at Stadium Australia, they failed to capitalise and Spurs stunned them with a late winner.The loss means new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso will head to Hong Kong for a clash with Juventus on Wednesday on the back of his first defeat, following a 6-4 victory over Western Sydney Wanderers last week.The Spaniard has overseen a string of high-profile signings since being appointed, headlined by Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, as he bids to rejuvenate the club after their disappointing 10th in the Premier League last season.Spurs, who fared even worse, coming 17th to narrowly miss relegation, have also been on a spending spree with Matheus Fernandes arriving from West Ham and Tonali from Newcastle.They fly home after a 2-0 win over Auckland FC and 1-1 draw with Sydney FC.Most of Chelsea's close-season signings have yet to link up with the squad, including Rogers.But right-back Marco Palestra, who joined from Atalanta, got his first minutes while Cole Palmer and Estevao started after a slew of youngsters were used against Western Sydney Wanderers.Tottenham midfielder Fernandes, who missed the Sydney game with "fatigue in his calf muscle", was again absent, as was James Maddison with a "small problem". But Tonali made his maiden start along with fellow new recruit Andy Robertson.After a cagey start, tempers flared when Conor Gallagher hacked down Chelsea's Dario Essugo in the 10th minute with players pushing and shoving each other. Gallagher was shown a yellow card and Essugo continued.Spurs broke the deadlock after a nice break down the right from Manor Solomon, who fed Tonali on the edge of the box with his shot taking a deflection.But it was a short-lived lead as Estevao headed home at the far post after Romeo Lavia broke free from midfield and they went to the break at 1-1 with Spurs having the better half.Danso's brain-fade allowed Chelsea to dominate the second-half with Estevao rattling the crossbar among a slew of chances.But, in a worry for Alonso, they failed to make the most of the extra man and Spurs stole their thunder when Richarlison side-footed home at the death.  

Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca said on Friday people may be quick to judge his side, as he prepared for his first game in charge since succeeding Pep Guardiola.The Italian formally took over last month following the departure of the legendary Catalan, who steered the club to 20 trophies during a supremely successful decade at the Etihad Stadium.Maresca will lead City out for the first time in a pre-season friendly against Inter Milan in Hong Kong on Saturday."We're going to be judged, always - not just tomorrow," the former Chelsea and Leicester boss said at a news conference."We started 10 days ago, all together, we are introducing some new concepts, so it's also important tomorrow to see something."I don't believe in copy and paste. I think every manager (is) different... so it's my target, my duty, to try to introduce some new ideas."Several of City's World Cup stars have not travelled with the squad to Hong Kong, the first stop on an Asia tour that will also include two games in Seoul.Among them are striker Erling Haaland - last season's Premier League top scorer - and Rodri, who captained Spain to World Cup victory this month.The midfielder is recovering from minor back surgery and has been rumoured to be a transfer target for Real Madrid.Maresca dismissed the links as "speculation" and said he and the club hierarchy had not had "any conversations just focused on Rodri"."The main focus for him when the season finished was the World Cup. Now he is enjoying some rest."Every manager in the world wants Rodri because he's a top player, so it's important for me, for the club, for everyone, but now he needs his holiday."Inter announced the signing on Thursday of former City defender John Stones on a two-year deal.The 32-year-old left the Manchester club when his contract expired at the end of last month, and helped England to a third-placed finish at the World Cup."For us, having the possibility to get John Stones (as) a free agent, it's important," Inter head coach Cristian Chivu said on Friday."It's important for the quality he brings, it's important for the personality, for the charisma he has, for the experience that he has shown."It's one defender added to our group of defenders who will definitely improve the department."

Eddie Howe confirmed on Friday he had stepped down as Newcastle manager to "recharge and take a break" following a turbulent end to his five-year spell at St James' Park.Howe revitalised a club that had struggled for decades, securing a first major trophy in 56 years by winning the League Cup in 2025.The former Bournemouth boss also led Newcastle to Champions League qualification in 2023 and 2025.But the Magpies struggled to a 12th-place finish in the Premier League last season and have endured a difficult summer transfer window.Howe oversaw Wednesday's 4-1 pre-season friendly defeat at Bristol City and it emerged hours later that he was set to leave.Newcastle announced the Englishman's departure on Friday, saying they had accepted his decision to step down and thanking him for his "extraordinary contribution"."After a period of personal reflection, I have decided that now is the right time for me to step away from my role as head coach of Newcastle United," Howe said in a club statement."After nearly five years of giving my life, heart and soul into the club with unrelenting energy, I feel that it is in the best interests of both myself and the club to step away, recharge and take a break." 'Privilege of a lifetime' Howe, 48, said managing Newcastle had been the "privilege of my lifetime" and that leaving had been a tough decision to take.German manager Matthias Jaissle, currently in charge of Saudi club Al-Ahli, is favourite to take over from Howe at St James' Park.Howe replaced Steve Bruce in November 2021 and won the League Cup in March last year - beating Liverpool in the final to clinch the club's first major silverware since 1969.But hampered by star striker Alexander Isak's protracted move to Liverpool at the start of last season, Howe came under pressure as his team lost 17 of their 38 Premier League games.Newcastle reached the Champions League last 16 but were humbled 8-3 on aggregate by Barcelona.The club have since been depleted by the close-season departures of Italy midfielder Sandro Tonali to Tottenham and England forward Anthony Gordon to Barcelona.Speculation continues over the future of Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes, who has been linked with a move to Premier League champions Arsenal.Howe was hired just weeks after Newcastle were bought by a Saudi-led consortium, ending the turbulent reign of former owner Mike Ashley and propelling the club into the ranks of the super-rich. The Magpies were second from bottom of the Premier League, five points from safety, but finished the season in mid-table.The new owners were not shy of stating their long-term ambitions, targeting the Premier League title within 10 years.Howe, who will be followed out of the door by his coaching staff, was not able to achieve that lofty goal, but he is widely admired for lifting Newcastle out of their decades-long malaise.David Hopkinson, Newcastle United's CEO, said: "Eddie and his staff leave with the deep gratitude and respect of everyone at Newcastle United, and with a lasting place in the club's history."While we are naturally disappointed to see Eddie leave, we remain immensely thankful for everything he has done for the club."Newcastle start their Premier League campaign at home to Liverpool on August 23. 

New Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso on Monday said Morgan Rogers was "a great signing" who would make the club more competitive and expected the England midfielder to "link really well" with Cole Palmer.The versatile Rogers was signed from Aston Villa last week for £117mn ($157mn), a record for a British player.Alonso said he was "delighted" to lure the 23-year-old to Stamford Bridge ahead of his first match in charge, a pre-season friendly against Western Sydney Wanderers on Tuesday."It's a great signing. I think that in that position, we needed an important player, and I'm sure that there were not many more better options than Morgan," the Spaniard told reporters."So we are delighted. It means a lot for everyone."The swoop is a significant statement of intent from Chelsea, who finished 10th in the Premier League last season and missed out on Europe.Alonso will have to find a way to accommodate Rogers, Palmer, Pedro Neto, Estevao Willian and another close-season signing, Geovany Quenda, into his attacking midfield positions."I have a plan. I have an idea. I can see them linking really well," Alonso said on how Morgan could fit in alongside Palmer. The pair are close friends who have similar playing styles."You need to have a good mix, good stability players, and players that can play with more freedom," Alonso added."And if we get that balance right, and we get those special players in the right positions, with good control, I think that we will be more competitive with the ball and against the ball."Chelsea had reportedly been chasing Rogers for two years and beat Arsenal to his signature after the Premier League champions refused to match the eye-watering fee demanded by Villa.His transfer surpassed the previous record fee for a British player set by Manchester City when they signed England midfielder Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest for £116 million earlier this month."I think that one of his best qualities is that he's flexible," Alonso said of Rogers, who is not on their pre-season trip to Australia after helping England to finish third at the World Cup."I think that he can play in that pocket position, close to the striker, close to the turn, but he's played as well on the right. But I think more coming from the left."We (will) play him where he feels he is enjoying his game, that he feels his flow. I'm sure that he will have good connections with the other players that he can have around him."So if we get those connections right, those little associations between them that they look for each other and they connect well, I think that it will be a great step forward in the quality of our game."Chelsea will also play fellow London club Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday in Sydney, before flying to Hong Kong for a match against Juventus on August 5. 

Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi urged his team on Monday to play with "soul and passion" as the London club rebuild after narrowly avoiding relegation from the Premier League.Spurs have embarked on an aggressive summer of spending to boost their fortunes after avoiding the drop by coming 17th, but it was a nail-biting outcome that went down to the wire.Big-money signings include midfielders Mateus Fernandes from West Ham and Sandro Tonali from Newcastle. De Zerbi also raided his old club Brighton for centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke.Full-back Andy Robertson, centre-back Marcos Senesi and goalkeeper Martin Dubravka have all arrived on free transfers as the squad takes on a new look.De Zerbi, in Sydney on a pre-season tour, said he expected more when the new campaign begins on August 22 and outlined that he wanted to "build a new team with the qualities, with big players, but with soul, with passion, with all the values we have".The Italian added: "Football now is not just on the pitch, it's not just with the ball, it's before, it's in life. It's how many hours during the day you think about your job."Spurs opened their pre-season tour with an entertaining 2-0 win over A-League champions Auckland FC in New Zealand on Sunday with goals from Dane Scarlett and Richarlison.They face Sydney FC on Wednesday then meet London rivals Chelsea in Sydney three days later.De Zerbi started with a host of younger players in Auckland, before more of a first team feel in the final 30 minutes when the likes of Fernandes, Richarlison, Conor Gallagher and Ben Davies all got a run."We didn't concede, we didn't suffer any injuries and this is big news, important news, especially for the beginning of the season," said De Zerbi.He suggested there could be more signings before the transfer window closes."I think we can be happier at the end of this transfer market because I spoke a lot of time with the owner, with the board and they want to build a very strong team for this season, to make the days for the future become great again," he said.
