England outlast Sri Lanka despite Rathnayake's hundred in dead rubber

Pavan Rathnayake's brilliant century went in vain as England stopped Sri Lanka from chasing a big 387 target, winning the dead rubber by 55 runs in Lahore on Thursday.On the same day last week, Rathnayake scored an epic 130 in Sri Lanka's 430-run chase in Rawalpindi but this time his 77-ball 118 was not enough as Sri Lanka were dismissed for 331 in 45.1 overs. England opener Ben Duckett had earlier smashed his highest ODI score of 167 to propel England to 386-5.With 87 needed in the last ten overs Sri Lanka were on course for another upset victory but hopes vanished when spinner Liam Dawson dismissed Rathnayake caught off a miscued sweep in the 45th over. Dawson finished with career best figures of 4-49, while Sonny Baker finished with 2-75.Besides Rathnayake's third ODI hundred, skipper Kusal Mendis chipped in with a 71-ball 89 with five sixes and eight boundaries to keep Sri Lanka in the hunt. Despite the loss Sri Lanka can take heart for Saturday's final against Pakistan - also in Lahore - with sloppy England departing with just one win in four games.Rathnayake, who hit 15 boundaries and a six, added 80 for the third wicket off just 59 balls with Mendis to keep England at bay. Mendis had earlier added 84 for the second wicket with Avishka Fernando, who scored a quickfire 48.Rathnayake kept the fight with a 72-run stand for the fifth wicket with Janith Liyanage (30) but Baker broke the stand to bring England back in the gameEngland captain Harry Broo was relieved. "The way we finished the game off, we've learned a lot from the game when they chased 430," said Brook. "That's really good. I wasn't getting nervy, to be honest."We haven't had the series we wanted, we'd have liked to be in the final on Saturday. The lads are taking a lot of confidence."Mendis showed confidence for the final. "We have batted well, so not to worry about the final and I am sure we will be up to the task come Saturday," said Mendis.Duckett's 132-ball knock included 24 boundaries, anchoring the innings along with Tom Banton's 74 runs after England were put in to bat. Duckett, whose previous highest was 165 against Australia in the Champions Trophy at the same venue last year, put on 163 for the opening wicket with Banton.Banton's 75-ball knock had two sixes and eight boundaries. Duckett added another rapid 107 off just 75 balls for the second wicket with Harry Brook, with skipper Brook hitting two sixes and three fours in his 34-ball 44.Duckett finally fell to a miscued scoop off Eshan Malinga in the 42nd over. Jordan Cox, with 43 runs, Will Jacks's 30 and Sam Curran, who was 21 not out, helped England add 92 runs in the last ten overs. Pacer Asitha Fernando chipped in with 2-63 but fellow pacer Malinga's only wicket cost 101 runs. BRIEF SCORESEngland 386 for 5 (Duckett 167, Banton 74) beat Sri Lanka 331 (Rathnayake 118, Mendis 89, Dawson 4-49) by 55 runs.

Pakistan keep England to 241 despite Duckett ton

Pakistan paceman Shaheen Shah Afridi grabbed four wickets to limit England to 241 despite a fighting century by Ben Duckett in Lahore on Sunday.Battling to stay in the tri-series after losing their first two games, England never fully recovered after slipping to 19-3 on a batting-friendly pitch. Duckett resisted with a knock of 105 off 111 balls and Sam Curran scored 42 during a 93-run fifth wicket stand, while Gus Atkinson contributed an unbeaten 36 at the bottom of the order.Shaheen claimed 4-46 while Razaullah took 2-38 on his ODI debut as England were bowled out in 46.4 overs. Duckett hit 10 fours and two sixes before falling to spinner Arafat Minhas, who finished with 2-26.Opting to bowl first, Shaheen removed Tom Banton for four in the opening over -- his 150th ODI wicket.The lanky left-armer is the 13th bowler from Pakistan to take 150 or more wickets. In his next over, Shaheen got the prized wicket of Joe Root for five, caught cutting a short delivery.England plunged into further trouble when Harry Brook -- who scored the fastest-ever ODI double century in his team's shock defeat to Sri Lanka -- was run out for one. Duckett's fifth ODI hundred and Curran's resolute batting briefly steadied England before Shaheen took two more wickets to end the innings.

Shadab ton stuns England as Pakistan reach tri-series final

Shadab Khan's maiden century rescued Pakistan from a dire situation and took them to a stunning one-wicket victory over England in the one-day international in Lahore on Sunday, booking the hosts' spot in the final of the tri-series.Defending a modest 242-run target, England were on the cusp of victory with the home team reduced to 154-9, but Shadab's unbeaten 113 condemned Harry Brook's side to a third defeat in five days in the series, which also involves Sri Lanka.England, who failed to defend a 430-run target against Sri Lanka on Thursday, were left stunned as number 11 Haris Rauf cracked the winning boundary with 17 balls to spare, sparking huge celebrations in the Pakistan dug-out.Haris, who scored an unbeaten seven, ably played his part in a match-winning 89-run partnership with Shadab for the last wicket.Shadab, who cracked five sixes and 13 boundaries, was lucky to survive a leg-before decision off Gus Atkinson with 20 needed.But while trudging off distraught, he took a review which overturned the decision.Restored to the crease, the 28-year-old guided Pakistan to victory and a spot in next Saturday's final.Pakistan had lost opener Fakhar Zaman and Babar Azam for 10 each and Saim Ayub for six in a poor start before Saad Baig (32) and Salman Agha (26) briefly revived the innings. Match-winner Shadab then entered the fray in the 24th over with Pakistan on 103-6. THE SHAHEEN SHOWDefeat means England's chances of reaching a place in the October 31 final hang in the balance as they need Pakistan to beat Sri Lanka on Tuesday and then win themselves against the island nation on Thursday.Earlier, England's 241 all out was aided by a century by opener Ben Duckett, who anchored the innings with 105.Duckett's knock and Sam Curran's 42 during a 93-run fifth-wicket stand revived England from a precarious position of 19-3.Atkinson contributed an unbeaten 36 at the bottom of the order.For Pakistan, Shaheen Shah Afridi claimed 4-46, while Razaullah took 2-38 on his ODI debut as England were bowled out in 46.4 overs.Duckett hit 10 fours and two sixes before falling to spinner Arafat Minhas, who finished with 2-26.Opting to bowl first, Pakistan skipper Shaheen removed Tom Banton for four in the opening over -- his 150th ODI wicket.The lanky left-armer is the 13th bowler from Pakistan to take 150 or more wickets.In his next over, Shaheen got the prized wicket of Joe Root for five, caught cutting a short delivery.England plunged into further trouble when Harry Brook -- who scored the fastest-ever ODI double century in his team's shock defeat to Sri Lanka -- was run out for one.Duckett's fifth ODI hundred and Curran's resolute batting briefly steadied England before Shaheen took two more wickets to end the innings. BRIEF SCORESPakistan 243 for 9 (Shadab 113*, Overton 3-43) beat England 241 (Duckett 105, Curran 42, Afridi 4-46) by one wicket

Wellalage and Mendis star as Sri Lanka level England ODI series

Dunith Wellalage took three wickets after captain Kusal Mendis hit a fine century as Sri Lanka beat England by 16 runs at Headingley on Thursday to level a three-match one-day international series at 1-1.England were seemingly cruising to a target of 322 as Tom Banton (73) and Ben Duckett (67) shared a first-wicket stand of 143.Sri Lanka had been hammered 3-0 in a preceding T20 series but Wellalage dragged them back into this match. He removed both openers and home captain Harry Brook to reduce England to 157-3. The left-arm spinner finished with figures of 3-49England's Jos Buttler then threatened to win the game by himself with a barrage of boundaries.But on 64 he pulled up with what a team spokesman later said was a "left hamstring twinge" and retired hurt,with England still requiring 68 off 75 balls for victory. Rehan Ahmed immediately fell for a duck, caught down the legside by wicketkeeper Mendis off Dilshan Madushanka.The runs dried up as Sri Lanka's previously wayward quicks gaining reverse swing with the old ball.When Jamie Overton holed out, a hobbling Buttler resumed his innings with England 295-7 and needing 27 runs off 14 balls.Will Jacks drove Asitha Fernando for six to complete a 59-ball fifty following his unbeaten 46 in a player-of-the-match performance during England's 89-run win in Tuesday's series opener at Chester-le-Street.But Jacks (52) then skyed Eshan Malinga to long-on.Buttler was on strike at the start of the last over, with England needing 19 to win.He connected well off Madushanka but the ball flew straight to deep midwicket and Buttler was gone for good on 69.Kamindu Mendis saved what seemed a certain six by Jofra Archer to leave England with an impossible target off 17 off two balls.Without Wellalage, the game would not have gone the distance.He bowled Duckett with a sharply turning delivery and had the charging Banton stumped by Mendis. BROOK DISMISSED FOR JUST ONEWellalage then pinned the in-form Brook lbw for just one.Mendis's decision to persist with the previously expensive Sachindu Colombage, appearing in just his second ODI, was rewarded when the leg-spinner had Joe Root caught at short cover for just 15.Buttler completed a 36-ball fifty with a flicked six off Colombage and struck the next delivery high over long-off for another six.Earlier, Mendis led from the front with a superb 121 in Sri Lanka's 321-6 after winning the toss.With Kamindu Mendis (54), he shared a second-wicket partnership of 137.Kusal had a reprieve on 17 when Atkinson dropped a two-handed catch in a swirling breeze at fine leg.Kusal, having reviewed successfully on 99, reached his seventh ODI century in style when he cover-drove Overton to the boundary for an 82-ball hundred, including 12 fours and three sixes before he holed out to leg-spinner Ahmed.The teams head to the Oval for a series-decider on Sunday. BRIEF SCORESSri Lanka 321 for 6 (Kusal 121, Kamindu 54) beat England 305 for 9 (Banton 73, Buttler 69, Duckett 67, Jacks 52, Wellalage 3-49) by 16 runs

Duckett's big century sets up England series win over India

England beat India by 27 runs in a high-scoring contest at Lord's on Sunday to secure their first bilateral one-day international series victory against the world’s number one-ranked side since 2018.Opener Ben Duckett laid the foundations for a colossal total of 387-3 in 50 overs with a record-breaking 141 from 135 balls as England took the series 2-1.It was the highest innings in an ODI at Lord’s, eclipsing Viv Richards’s 138 not out in the 1979 World Cup final."That's pretty cool to me. Very precious,” said Duckett. "But all that I'm really bothered about today is that we've beaten the best side in the world."We've probably had a fair few critics over the last 12 to 18 months and a lot of that has been rightly so at times but now we can build on this."We've shown what we're capable of, we are just trying to be as consistent with it as possible moving forward."The bowlers have been pretty good this series. With the bat, we've let ourselves down a little bit so it was really nice to put that performance together today.” ROHIT SHARMA'S THRILLING 138Rohit Sharma gave India hope with a thrilling 138 from 110 balls which served to underline his continuing value to India after the talk over whether he still has a future in the side but, with Sam Curran taking 4-75, the huge target proved beyond the tourists.Duckett, who hit 18 fours and one six, shared in an opening stand of 192 - England’s highest in an ODI against India - with Jacob Bethell, who made 91. With player of the series Joe Root hitting 74 not out - his sixth successive ODI half-century - and Jos Buttler a blazing unbeaten 41 off just 13 balls, England posted their highest total at Lord’s in an ODI.India’s attack, missing Jasprit Bumrah with a knee injury, suffered badly. Gurnoor Brar’s figures of 0-97 in his 10 overs were the most expensive for his country against England in an ODI while Prince Yadav, who bowled seven wides, took 1-79.Rohit, who made his 34th ODI hundred, shared in a 147-run first-wicket stand with Shubman Gill, who made 77, but once the 39-year-old had gone, bowled by the slow left arm spin of Bethell, India fell further and further behind the required run rate. The loss of three wickets in the space of seven deliveries from Curran effectively ended the pursuit.Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer both fell to catches in the deep by substitute Rehan Ahmed before Virat Kohli miscued to England captain Harry Brook to depart for 74.It was Kohli’s first half-century at Lord’s but, even with India reaching 360-7, it was ultimately in a losing cause."We gave a bit too many runs in the last three overs - around 60 runs. That's where the game went too far ahead from us,” said Gill, India's captain.It has been a disappointing white-ball trip all round for India who also lost both their T20 series to Ireland and England.  BRIEF SCORES England 387 for 3 (Duckett 141, Bethell 91, Root 74*, Buttler 41*) beat India 360 for 7 (Rohit 138, Gill 77, Kohli 74) by 27 runs

Hundred hero Duckett punishes New Zealand after Stokes sparks England revival

Ben Duckett scored his first century in over a year and Jacob Bethell banished his first-innings blues after returning England captain Ben Stokes sparked a fightback in the third Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge.England were 223-2 at stumps on Friday's second day, 215 runs behind New Zealand's first-innings 438, with the three-match series level at 1-1.Opening batsman Duckett made 113 to the delight of his sun-drenched Nottinghamshire home crowd.Together with fellow left-hander Bethell (74 not out) he shared a rapid second-wicket stand of 179 in 30 overs after Emilio Gay fell for a duck.Duckett's seventh hundred in 46 Tests was also his first since he reached three figures against India in Leeds on June 20 last year."It meant a lot," the 31-year-old Duckett told Sky Sports after stumps. "It's been a bit of a journey since last summer... I was quite emotional."England's 8-1 should have become 8-2 when Duckett edged Nathan Smith only for Henry Nicholls to drop a seemingly routine chance at third slip."I nicked off on eight," Duckett said."On another day I'd have been back in the hut (out), but I knew that when that happened it could have been my day," he added.'MAGICAL' PERFORMANCEEngland were also indebted to Stokes's latest inspirational bowling display as the Black Caps, set for a total in excess of 500 at 361-2, lost their last eight wickets for 77 runs.The seamer led England's attack with 4-70 in 21 overs, a return that took him to 250 Test wickets, with the bulk of Stokes's success coming in a Friday-morning burst of 3-13 in eight overs.Stokes was back in the side after being omitted from England's 253-run defeat in the second Test for breaking a midnight curfew, along with team-mate Gus Atkinson, while celebrating at a London nightclub following the first-Test win over New Zealand.It was Stokes who had inspired an England recovery late on Thursday by dismissing Devon Conway (157) to end an opening partnership of 317 with New Zealand captain Tom Latham (151). STOKES GETS THE BREAKTHROUGHAs temperatures reached a sweltering 36C, Stokes once more got the breakthrough England needed Friday when he had Daryl Mitchell (11) caught behind.Stokes, gaining movement beyond the rest of his attack, struck again when nightwatchman Will O'Rourke (19) skyed to point.New Zealand were reduced to 413-7 when Stokes's well-directed bouncer left Mitchell Santner in a tangle, the ball ballooning to gully to give the all-rounder his 250th Test wicket.Stokes is the only player other than retired South Africa great Jacques Kallis to score more than 7,000 runs, while also taking at least 250 wickets, in Test cricket.New Zealand, without the injured Matt Henry, who took 11 wickets in the second Test at the Oval and the in-form Kyle Jamieson, rested as a fitness precaution following back trouble, toiled in soaring heat just as England had done before them.The Black Caps suffered further disruption when Blair Tickner, hit on the helmet by fast bowler Archer while batting, only managed three overs before being ruled out with concussion.Tickner was replaced by fellow paceman Zak Foulkes, New Zealand's first concussion substitute in Tests.Duckett square-drove Smith for four the ball after he was dropped and seized on anything loose from returning left-arm spinner Santner, whose eight wicketless overs cost an expensive 55 runs.His pulled four off fast bowler O'Rourke took him to 98 before a quick single completed an 88-ball century, including 18 boundaries, with the often reserved Duckett punching the air in delight.Duckett was out shortly afterwards when he dragged on to Smith, but by then England were 187-2.He was brilliantly supported by Bethell, who arrived in Nottingham averaging a woeful 8.75 in the first innings of a Test match.The 22-year-old made a mockery of that statistic during a 60-ball fifty featuring eight fours as he too thrived in ideal batting conditions. BRIEF SCORES  England 223 for 2 (Duckett 113, Bethell 74*) trail New Zealand 438 (Conway 157, Latham 151, Stokes 4-70) by 215 runs

England opener Ben Duckett has withdrawn from the Indian Premier League (IPL) four days before the start of the ‌tournament to focus on his international career, a decision ‌that could leave him facing a ‌two-season ban from ‌the league. The 31-year-old, who ‌scored 202 runs at an average of 20.20 during the Ashes, was bought by Delhi Capitals for Rs20mn ($213,167) at the auction. Under IPL rules, any player who registers for the auction, is picked by a franchise and makes himself unavailable before the start of the season can be barred from participating in the tournament and the player auction ‌for two seasons. “I have made the extremely difficult decision to withdraw from the IPL. I have given this a lot of thought and it has not been an easy choice,” Duckett wrote on Instagram. “Representing England is something I have dreamed of since I was a child, and I want to give everything I can to English cricket. To do ‌that, I need ‌to ensure I am in the best possible place physically and mentally ahead of the summer. “I would like to sincerely apologise to everyone at Delhi. I was genuinely very excited about the opportunity to represent the franchise, and I fully appreciate the time and planning that goes into building a squad. “I am sorry for any disruption my decision may cause. I would also like to apologise to all the fans, as I know how much the team means to everyone in Delhi.” The IPL runs from March 28 to ‌May 31.

Sri Lanka seal 19-run win over England in opening ODI

Sri Lanka's spinners turned the screws to script a hard-fought 19-run victory over England in the opening one-day international at Colombo's R. Premadasa Stadium Thursday.Set 272 for victory, England appeared to be cruising at 129-1 with Ben Duckett and Joe Root stroking the ball sweetly and the asking rate firmly under control.But once the 117-run stand was broken, Sri Lanka dried up the runs and England faltered with the bat, being bowled out for 252 in the final over."It was a good game of cricket, but we need to keep improving. Our spinners did a terrific job. We knew it would start turning after the 30th over and batting would become a challenge," Sri Lanka captain Charith Asalanka said.Duckett's attempted reverse sweep brought Sri Lanka back into the game as he was ruled leg before to Jeffrey Vandersay. However, it was Root's dismissal that truly changed the complexion of the contest.The former England Test captain, a perennial thorn in Sri Lanka's side with imposing averages of 61 in ODIs and 62 in Tests against them, misjudged a sweep off part-time spinner Dhananjaya de Silva.Sri Lanka reviewed instantly, the on-field decision was overturned and the roar from the Premadasa stands said it all.With the required rate climbing north of eight an over, England were forced into risk mode.Harry Brook and Jacob Bethell both paid the price, brilliantly stumped by Kusal Mendis, with Brook undone off a wide by his opposite number Asalanka.Jamie Overton injected late drama with a muscular 34 off 17 balls, adding 39 for the last wicket with Adil Rashid, but it proved too steep a hill to climb and he was the final wicket to fall.Sri Lanka's fielders matched their bowlers stride for stride, with De Silva and Dunith Wellalage pulling off stunning catches to keep the pressure relentless.Mendis holds Sri Lanka togetherEarlier, Mendis had been the glue that held Sri Lanka's innings together after England's leg-spin pair of Adil Rashid and Rehan Ahmed reduced the hosts to 124 for four.Battling cramps but showing sharp game awareness, Mendis rotated the strike cleverly and punished anything loose.He added 88 runs for the fifth wicket with Janith Liyanage, who made 46.Mendis was on 92 at the start of the final over and watched from the non-striker's end as Wellalage stole the limelight, launching three fours and a six in a blistering 25 not out from 12 balls as the last over bowled by Overton yielded 23.That proved crucial as it dragged the hosts to 271-6 from their 50 overs."Sri Lanka outplayed us," England captain Harry Brook said."We thought we could chase it and we were in a good position, but with the asking rate climbing it became difficult. It's hard to start and someone needed to go on and finish the job."The teams meet again at the same stadium tomoroow for the second game of the three-match series.BRIEF SCORES: Sri Lanka 271 for 6 (Mendis 93*, Liyanage 46, Rashid 3-44) beat England 252 (Duckett 62, Root 61, Overton 34, Madushan 3-39) by 19 runs.
