Trump says US reaches agreement with Denmark on Greenland security

US President Donald Trump said Friday that the United States had reached an agreement with Denmark and Greenland giving Washington what he described as permanent control over security and other needs on the strategically important Arctic island. In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said the agreement would guarantee that the United States would "FOREVER" have the ability to do what it deemed necessary to secure and defend Greenland and the United States, adding that Washington would bear no cost.Trump also said no US adversary would be allowed to establish a military base or maintain a military presence in Greenland, or make sensitive investments on the island, without Washington's express written approval.He said the United States would immediately begin the process of developing a large military presence in Greenland.Denmark and Greenland said the agreement is expected to be signed on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly next week and remains subject to parliamentary procedures. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said the agreement recognizes the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark, as well as the right of the Greenlandic people to self-determination.Trump has repeatedly sought greater US control over Greenland since returning to the White House for a second term in January 2025, citing the island's strategic importance and its location in the Arctic. His earlier push to acquire Greenland strained relations with Denmark, a fellow NATO member.The latest agreement follows Trump's announcement last month that he had reached a "framework" agreement with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte aimed at securing greater US influence in the Arctic. It also follows the formation of a joint working group involving the United States, Denmark and Greenland to discuss Washington's security concerns in the Arctic.

FIFA says review of shelved investment plan to be presented to Council

FIFA said on Thursday that a review of the withdrawn FFE proposal would be presented to the world soccer body's Council, after criticism from Denmark's football chief Jesper Moller over a lack of answers regarding the abandoned project.Moller last week criticised world soccer's governing body for declining to answer what he described as "critical questions" at a Legal Committee meeting about the scrapped proposal, launched by FIFA President Gianni Infantino, to sell commercial stakes in tournaments to outside investors."FIFA Standing Committees advise and assist the FIFA Council in their respective fields in line with FIFA's Statutes and Governance Regulations," FIFA told Reuters in a statement."As previously communicated, a review of the withdrawn FIFA Forward Enterprise proposal will be presented to the FIFA Council." COUNCIL COMPRISES OF 37 MEMBERSThe FIFA Council comprises 37 members, including President Infantino, eight vice-presidents and 28 members elected by FIFA's member associations.Infantino's proposal to sell a 20% stake in the World Cup and other FIFA events triggered a global backlash, with UEFA, the AFC and CONCACAF among the confederations calling for changes to FIFA's leadership structure.The possibility of a no-confidence vote against Infantino was also discussed.Several European national associations have since withdrawn support for Infantino's re-election bid, with Greek Football Association President Makis Gagatsis and former Germany national team director Oliver Bierhoff joining UEFA's push for change in FIFA's leadership on Tuesday, underscoring a united European front.However, multiple sources familiar with the discussions told Reuters that the FIFA president retains sufficient backing to secure another term, meaning opponents will need to shift strategy and focus on curbing his powers.The FIFA presidential election is scheduled for March 18, 2027, in Rabat, where Infantino will seek a fourth term in office.

100 organisations in massive Gaza solidarity march in Denmark

More than 10,000 people took part in a pro-Palestinian demonstration in Copenhagen on Sunday, calling for an end to the war in Gaza and urging Denmark to recognise the state of Palestine. Some 100 organisations including Oxfam, Greenpeace and Amnesty took part in the march, as well as unions, political parties, artists' collectives and activists including Greta Thunberg.Police did not provide an estimate of the number of demonstrators.Gathering under sunny skies outside the Danish parliament, the demonstrators -- many of them families with young children -- waved flags and carried banners, chanting "Stop Arms Sales", "Free Free Palestine" and "Denmark Says No to Genocide".A traditional supporter of Israel, Denmark has said it wants to use its current presidency of the European Union to increase pressure on the Israeli government to end the war in Gaza, which Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen recently said had gone "too far".But Denmark has said it has no plans to recognise a Palestinian state in the near future."Those who are in power are not stopping the genocide, so it's even more important to go out and protest and show all the leaders that we do not agree with this," 43-year-old demonstrator Michelle Appelros told AFP.
