KL Rahul topped the Indian Premier League run-scoring charts with a match-winning knock in Delhi Capitals’ seven-wicket win over Rajasthan ‌Royals on Friday, saying individual milestones mean ​more when they ‌help the team win. Rahul has been Delhi’s ‌most consistent performer ‌this season, registering three ‌half-centuries and one century despite the team’s mixed results. The 34-year-old struck 75 off 40 balls, with six fours and five sixes, as Delhi snapped a three-match losing streak and completed their highest successful run chase of 226 in the IPL. Rahul had earlier hit an unbeaten 152 in ​a defeat against Punjab Kings, a knock that drew praise but did not bring the desired result for the ‌team. “After playing for so many years, ​numbers do matter,” Rahul said at the ​post-match presentation. “You’re happy that you score runs and you score these big runs and break records. “But if you don’t get the win after the game, it’s not as much fun,” he said, Rahul has been in strong form this season and he credited it to work on maintaining a higher strike rate to suit ‌the demands of ‌modern day Twenty20 cricket. While he is enjoying a good run in the tournament, he acknowledged that Delhi had slipped up in key moments despite pushing hard in earlier games. “This competition and T20 cricket doesn’t allow you a second chance,” he said. “So it was important that we take our chances ​and when we’re ahead, really press hard and finish the game, which we weren’t doing.” Delhi were also boosted by the return of Australia fast bowler Mitchell Starc, who took three wickets in his first match of the season after months on the sidelines with elbow and shoulder injuries. Sixth-placed Delhi ‌next face ​Chennai Super Kings on Tuesday. 

KL Rahul and Tristan Stubbs led Delhi Capitals to a six-wicket win over Royal Challengers ‌Bengaluru in the Indian Premier League on a sweltering Saturday, as the ​visitors outplayed the hosts in a ‌cracking contest at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. Chasing 176, Delhi rode a ‌composed innings from Rahul, who marked his ‌birthday with a fluent 57 off ‌34 before Stubbs applied the finishing touches, ensuring the target was overhauled with a ball to spare. Put in to bat, Bengaluru opener Phil Salt marked his presence with a half-century to set the tone, but regular wickets in the innings prevented the hosts from accelerating and they finished on 175-8 in oppressive heat. Bengaluru struck back early in Delhi’s chase, with pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar delivering a telling power-play spell that accounted for three quick wickets, leaving Delhi under pressure at 50-3 inside six overs. Local favourite Rahul, ​however, steadied the innings by striking six fours and two sixes in his knock and allowed others to play without pressure despite challenging batting conditions. “We didn’t want to take it too deep, we just ‌wanted to stay positive... and try to put pressure ​on the bowlers,” Rahul said at the post-match presentation. “There was faith in Stubbs ​and (David) Miller. “They do this on a daily basis for South Africa and franchise cricket,” he added. Stubbs shifted the momentum decisively, seizing control with an unbeaten 60-run knock to tilt the contest firmly in Delhi’s favour, with steady support from captain Axar Patel before he was forced to retire hurt on 26. Miller (22 off 10) sealed the victory by striking the winning runs, ensuring there were no late alarms. “I didn’t want to take it into the last over. I knew we were going to do it, I didn’t know how. But thankfully Miller was at the other end. It’s his ‌bread and butter,” said Stubbs, who ‌was named player of the match. The win lifted Delhi to fourth in the standings with six points, while Bengaluru’s defeat dented their push at the top of the table, keeping them second on eight points. The match marked a milestone for the hosts, who became the first team to play 100 IPL matches at a single venue - the Chinnaswamy Stadium. Former Australia captain Allan Border was among the spectators, watching his first-ever IPL match. Earlier, Bengaluru openers Salt and Virat Kohli began briskly, but the tempo dipped when Lungi Ngidi ​struck in his opening over to dismiss Kohli for 19 off 13 balls. Salt, the hosts’ top scorer, then took control with a fluent 63 off 38 deliveries, before Tim David added a lively 26 off 17. “We were 15-20 runs short. The way we started, especially VK bhai (Virat Kohli) and Salt, they gave us a good start. Then we started losing wickets and it put us on the back foot,” said Bengaluru captain Rajat Patidar. Delhi bowlers including Ngidi, Kuldeep Yadav and Patel also did a reasonable job in checking the run flow, ‌with all three picking ​off two wickets apiece. Delhi next face Sunrisers Hyderabad on Tuesday, while Bengaluru host Gujarat Titans on Friday. BRIEF SCORESDelhi Capitals 179 for 4 (Stubbs 60*, Rahul 57, Bhuvneshwar 3-26) beat Royal Challengers Bengaluru 175 for 8 (Salt 63, Axar 2-18, Kuldeep 2-32) by six wickets 

England opener Ben Duckett has withdrawn from the Indian Premier League (IPL) four days before the start of the ‌tournament to focus on his international ​career, a decision ‌that could leave him facing a ‌two-season ban from ‌the league. The 31-year-old, who ‌scored 202 runs at an average of 20.20 during the Ashes, was bought by Delhi Capitals for Rs20mn ($213,167) at the auction. Under IPL rules, any player who registers for the auction, is picked by a franchise and makes himself unavailable before the ​start of the season can be barred from participating in the tournament and the player auction ‌for two seasons. “I have made the ​extremely difficult decision to withdraw from ​the IPL. I have given this a lot of thought and it has not been an easy choice,” Duckett wrote on Instagram. “Representing England is something I have dreamed of since I was a child, and I want to give everything I can to English cricket. To do ‌that, I need ‌to ensure I am in the best possible place physically and mentally ahead of the summer. “I would like to sincerely apologise to everyone at Delhi. I was genuinely very excited about the opportunity to represent the franchise, and I fully appreciate the time and ​planning that goes into building a squad. “I am sorry for any disruption my decision may cause. I would also like to apologise to all the fans, as I know how much the team means to everyone in Delhi.” The IPL runs from March 28 to ‌May 31.
