Spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz took the key wicket of Steve Smith to reduce Australia to 161-4 after the third day of the first Test in Darwin on Saturday and move Bangladesh closer to a historic upset.At stumps Australia trailed by 67 runs in their second innings, with Cameron Green on 43 and Alex Carey 19.After being dismissed for 426 shortly after lunch, Bangladesh seamer Hasan Mahmud stunned Australia when he claimed both openers cheaply.Hasan, who took a career-best 6-55 in the first innings, bowled Jake Weatherald (0) and Travis Head (17) in identical fashion, both chopping on to their stumps.On a good batting strip, Marnus Labuschagne and Smith initially steadied the ship.Labuschagne, who has been out of form and seen his place in the team increasingly come into question, eased to 31 before playing over the top of a straight ball from left-arm spinner Taijul Islam and being bowled.Smith, so often Australia's saviour, batted sensibly but with the score on 122 he got a leading edge to off-spinner Mehidy and chipped it straight back to the bowler, gone for 44."The way we showed character and the way we played for the last two or three days was outstanding," visiting captain Najmul Hossain Shanto told Fox Sports."We are taking it session by session, focusing on the process and not the outcome."Earlier, Mehidy did the damage with the bat, scoring a valuable half-century in Bangladesh's first innings.After Bangladesh were well beaten by a Cricket Australia XI in their only warm-up match, many expected this Test to be an easy Australia victory.But the unfancied visitors bowled the hosts out for 198 on the first day and then showed great dedication with the bat to keep the home side in the field for 138 overs.Mehidy shielded the lower order brilliantly in the morning session to frustrate a tiring Australian attack.When he was finally dismissed for 65 by Josh Hazlewood shortly after lunch, he had helped put his team into a strong position halfway through the match.Bangladesh are attempting to win a Test in Australia for the first time, at the third attempt."It was pretty hard work out there on that track," Hazlewood told Fox."Bangladesh dug in nice and tough and it was tough to get wickets out there." Bangladesh defy hostsAfter Bangladesh resumed the day on 351-6, fast bowler Hazlewood took two wickets in the first hour to give the hosts hope of wrapping up the tail relatively quickly.But Mehidy's outstanding batting allowed Bangladesh to defy the Australian bowlers on a typically hot and humid Darwin morning.They were helped by some poor Australian catching, including an almost inexplicable miss by Smith, who got under a mistimed pull from Taskin Ahmed in the deep but dropped the simplest of chances.After defying the Australians for over an hour in the final session Friday, Hasan lasted just four overs of the first session Saturday before being trapped leg before by Hazlewood, adding one run to his overnight score of 13.Taijul Islam made a breezy 17 before becoming Hazlewood's 299th wicket in Tests when he guided a ball straight to Cameron Green at gully.With Mehidy shielding Taskin, Bangladesh pushed the lead past 200 and kept the Australian bowlers toiling for another two hours.Hazlewood, the pick of the attack with 6-89, reached 300 wickets in Tests when he had Mehidy caught behind by Alex Carey to leave Bangladesh 418-9.He got his 301st when Number 11 Ebadot Hossain fell the same way for seven. BRIEF SCORES: Australia 198 and 161 for 4 (Green 43*, Carey 19*) trail Bangladesh 426 (Tanzid 101, Shanto 84, Mehidy 65, Hazlewood 6-89) by 67 runs. 

Australia on Wednesday opted for Josh Hazlewood ahead of fellow quick Scott Boland for the first Test against Bangladesh in Darwin, while veteran spinner Nathan Lyon returned after a long-term injury.An injured Hazlewood missed the entire home Ashes series against England in 2025/26, with warhorse Boland playing all five Tests in his place.But despite the 37-year-old’s heroics it was not enough to keep out a fit-again Hazlewood who was reunited for the first time in more than a year with long-time pace partners Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc.“They’re both pretty class, aren’t they?” skipper Cummins told reporters of Hazlewood and Boland in naming Australia’s team.“We were pretty certain we wanted ‘Lyono’ in the side, so (it came down to) working out what the make-up of the quicks were.“It’s always a pretty tight call. It’s one of those ones where there’s not much you can say to Scotty other than obviously there’s a lot of cricket coming up.”The Test starting today is the first of two against Bangladesh and kicks off a run of potentially 21 in 12 months for the world’s top-ranked side, who have not played a red-ball game since January.Lyon returns after hamstring surgery curtailed his part in Australia’s dominant 4-1 home Ashes win, a series where a back issue restricted Cummins to just one Test.Under-pressure Cameron Green held his spot and will come in at five with fellow all-rounder Beau Webster also in the side at seven, split by wicketkeeper Alex Carey.Cummins has urged Cameron Green to go on the offensive against Bangladesh’s bowlers in the series as the under-pressure all-rounder looks to bat away doubts about his place in the team.“We like it when he’s nice and busy and putting pressure back on the bowlers, he’s really intimidating,” Cummins sdaid.“Same with when he’s bowling, having that presence.“He’s quite an intimidating sight when he gets going. You see him in some T20 games, he’s beating the ball around.”Green averaged 24.42 with the bat in the Ashes but is batting higher than fellow seam-bowling all-rounder Beau Webster, who has barely put a foot wrong in his eight Tests.Some Australian cricket pundits have grown impatient with Green’s progress and questioned his place in the team, but Cummins said there was no pressure from his teammates.“He’s almost got too many skills, so it’s like ‘just get out there, assert yourself, strip it away, there’s no pressure from us,’” said the skipper. “Just go, you’ve got freedom, get out of your own way and just go play.’”Batting at number nine, Webster scored an unbeaten 71 at the Sydney Cricket Ground in the fifth Test against England and is averaging 41.09 with the bat.Jake Weatherald will open the batting alongside Travis Head with Marnus Labuschagne at three and Steve Smith at four.Josh Inglis was the other player from the initial squad not to make the XI. The clash at Marrara Oval will be only the third Test ever in tropical Darwin and the first since Sri Lanka visited in July 2004. The series moves to Harrup Park in Mackay next week, which will host its maiden Test. Australia: Jake Weatherald, Travis Head, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Cameron Green, Alex Carey, Beau Webster, Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins (capt), Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood.
