Slaven Bilic will return as head coach of Croatia, the national football federation announced Monday, replacing Zlatko Dalic, who resigned after the country's World Cup exit.Dalic stepped down last week after a tenure that included a runner-up finish at the 2018 World Cup. Croatia failed to move into the last 16 of this year's World Cup, losing 2-1 to Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal.Former Croatian international defender Bilic previously coached Croatia between 2006 and 2012.The 57-year-old, who also coached English clubs West Ham, West Bromwich Albion and Watford, was "unanimously appointed" as head coach, the Croatian Football Federation (HNS) said."It is not easy to succeed Zlatko, but we are convinced that Slaven is the right person for this role," HNS president Marijan Kustic said, praising Bilic's "extensive coaching and managerial experience".Bilic recorded a higher winning percentage than Dalic during his last tenure, with 42 wins, 15 draws and eight defeats in 65 matches.But his side's best result was reaching the quarter-finals of the 2008 European Championships, which they lost on penalties to Turkey."I am extremely excited about this challenge, which I feel completely ready for as a more mature and experienced coach than I was in 2006, but with the same motivation and desire for Croatia to be strong, bold and successful," Bilic told a press conference.- Modric in spotlight -The Split-born Bilic said he took the post to "achieve a great result, above all at the European Championship" in 2028.Asked about whether veteran captain Luka Modric would retire from international football, Bilic said the decision was up to the former Ballon d'Or winner, who will turn 41 in September."He is much more to Croatia than just the best player. Modric has been asked whether he is retiring since 2018 ... I would like him to continue playing for the national team."With 44 caps for Croatia, Bilic's club career was mostly spent at Hajduk Split with stints in England at West Ham and Everton in the mid-1990s.Bilic's last coaching position was at Saudi Arabia's Al-Fateh, during the 2023-2024 season.Modric's Croatia lost the 2018 World Cup final to France in Russia.Dalic also guided the nation to the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and the last-16 at Euro 2020. 

Croatia's most successful football coach, Zlatko Dalic, resigned on Wednesday, ending a tenure that included taking the team to the 2018 World Cup final."As much as I still feel the ambition and desire to achieve new successes with Croatia, I feel that this is the right moment to bring this incredible era to a close," he said in a statement."I am leaving with a full heart and proud that I have made my contribution to the greatest achievements in the history of Croatian football," the 59-year-old added.Dalic took over as coach in October 2017.Apart from their final defeat in Russia, where Croatia, led by Luka Modric, lost to France, Dalic guided the nation to the 2022 Qatar World Cup semi-finals and the Euro 2020 last 16."Zlatko's name will remain forever written in golden letters in the history of Croatian football," Croatian Football Federation (HSN) head Marijan Kustic said.Croatia failed to move into the last 16 of this year's World Cup, losing 2-1 in a gripping match against Portugal earlier this month.Local media are tipping former national coach Slaven Bilic as Dalic's likely successor.Bilic, 57, led Croatia from 2006-12. He recorded a higher winning percentage than Dalic, with 42 victories, 15 draws and eight defeats in 65 matches but his best performance in a major tournament was to reach the quarterfinals of the 2008 Euros where Croatia lost on penalties to Turkey.Bilic was a defender who played 44 times for Croatia. He has coached several clubs, including West Ham United, where he played in the mid-1990s.The former defender's last coaching position was at Saudi Arabia's Al-Fateh, during the 2023-2024 season.Dalic has repeatedly said he considered his job the "biggest privilege and pleasure a coach can have".His most notable previous coaching spells came outside Europe -- he was in charge of top Saudi Arabian clubs Al-Faisaly and Al-Hilal.In 2014, the former defensive midfielder took over Al Ain in the United Arab Emirates, where he was named coach of the year twice, leading the club to the 2016 Asian Champions League final. 

Panama were eliminated from World Cup contention after Croatia kept their hopes of progressing to the last 32 alive with a hard-fought 1-0 win on Tuesday.Croatia, who made it to the last four of the 2018 and 2022 tournaments, were looking to bounce back after a 4-2 defeat to England in their opening Group L game.In the end, Ante Budimir's 54th minute goal proved enough to see off the spirited Central Americans."You cannot win a match if you don't score," said Panama's Danish-born coach Thomas Christiansen.But he told reporters he was "super proud" of his players for how they battled against the higher-ranked Croatian side.Despite being eliminated from the tournament, Christiansen said Panama had taken strides forward."These players, after these two World Cup matches, won't be where they are today."Croatia's most celebrated player, Luka Modric, was making his 200th international appearance, but his early headed effort on goal sailed over the bar.Under Christiansen, Panama have implemented a tight defensive structure that helped them secure their second-ever World Cup appearance.But it was the Panamanian offence that almost made the difference in the first half.In the 23rd minute Jose Luis Rodriguez guided a header towards goal but the outstretched fingertips of Croatian 'keeper Dominik Livakovic redirected the ball off the bar.The second half marked a clear momentum shift and the capacity crowd of 43,000 in Toronto with a strong Croatian majority erupted when Budimir tapped in a cross from Josip Stanisic.Croatia should have been two up minutes later, when a perfectly weighted pass from Modric sent Marco Pasalic alone speeding towards goal. Pasalic's first effort was stopped by keeper Orlando Mosquera and although the rebound came back to him he blasted an off-balance second attempt well over the bar.Panama kept pressing for the equalizer but they ultimately failed to find the net, extending their World Cup goalless streak.They face England in what will be their final match of the tournament on Friday.Croatia have three points and will face Ghana, who moved onto four points after holding England to a goalless draw earlier, for a place in the final 32.After the match, Croatia coach Zlatko Dalic was asked about Modric's milestone international appearance, and whether the AC Milan midfielder was uncomfortable being the focus of adulation.Modric, 40, went off as a substitute after 81 minutes, prompting a roar of applause in the Toronto stadium, and was lifted in the air by his teammates after the final whistle."It could be that Luka might want to avoid all this," Dalic told reporters."He's very humble, he's very simple," he added, saying Modric "truly is not for major celebrations, but I'm very glad that we marked this today."In Dalic's view, Modric is a "born leader," not someone who needs to impose his leadership role on the squad."That's what makes Luka a quality person," the Croatian coach said.
