ESG key element of business environment, says chamber official

Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) standards have become an essential element of the modern business environment, driving corporate sustainability, growth, competitiveness, and resilience amid shifting global economic dynamics.Qatar Chamber first vice-chairman Mohamed bin Towar al-Kuwari made the statement during the ‘3rd ESG Qatar Conference 2026’ held Tuesday in Doha, where he delivered opening remarks.Al-Kuwari noted that sustainability has evolved beyond environmental protection into a comprehensive framework encompassing social responsibility, corporate governance, transparency, disclosure, and accountability. He noted that these core pillars build more efficient institutions while strengthening trust among enterprises, investors, and key stakeholders.The opening session was attended by the conference’s guests of honour, His Excellency Abdulrahman bin Hamad al-Attiyah, former secretary general of the Gulf Co-operation Council and Minister of State, and His Excellency Dr Hamad bin Abdulaziz al-Kuwari, Minister of State and president of Qatar National Library.Also in attendance were Sheikh Dr Thani bin Ali al-Thani, vice chairman of the Qatar International Centre for Conciliation and Arbitration (QICCA) at Qatar Chamber; and Dr Buthaina al-Ansari, chairperson of Hawkama International, who is also the conference’s president.Al-Kuwari also affirmed that Qatar Chamber attaches great importance to promoting governance and sustainability principles within the business community, recognising their vital role in enhancing corporate efficiency, risk management, competitiveness, and long-term sustainability.He highlighted the chamber’s efforts to guide the Qatari private sector toward adopting responsible practices and keeping pace with global ESG developments. He stressed that such practices accelerate Qatar’s transition toward a diversified, knowledge-based economy while directly advancing the objectives of Qatar National Vision 2030 and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).He said the chamber’s support for the conference reflects its commitment to promoting dialogue, knowledge-sharing, and the exchange of local and international expertise in governance and sustainability.Dr al-Ansari unveiled Qatar’s first specialised digital platform dedicated to streamlining corporate ESG reporting. The platform provides an automated, systematic framework that seamlessly aligns institutional data, and regulatory disclosure requirements with recognised international ESG standards. She said the platform aims to assist institutions and companies in submitting data and preparing ESG reports in accordance with international standards.The conference features specialised sessions addressing key ESG developments, including the integration of sustainability standards into corporate strategies, and the role of governance, transparency, and disclosure in enhancing institutional performance and investor confidence.The sessions also highlighted the role of financial institutions and the private sector in supporting a sustainable economy, managing ESG-related risks, and adopting responsible corporate practices and best practices.

Messi, Miami frustrated in 2-2 draw with San Diego

Lionel Messi and Inter Miami's hopes of overtaking Nashville at the top of Major League Soccer's Eastern Conference suffered a blow on Sunday after the champions were held to a 2-2 draw by San Diego in Florida. Two goals from Danish forward Anders Dreyer secured a share of the points for San Diego at Miami's Nu Stadium -- a result which left Miami 11 points adrift of Nashville with eight regular season games remaining. Denmark international Dreyer fired San Diego into a shock lead after 12 minutes, latching on to a superb through ball from compatriot Jeppe Tverskov before lifting a delicate chip over Miami goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair. But Miami, who dominated territory and possession for long periods thereafter, were back on level terms in the 24th minute when Messi curled in his 101st goal for Miami.Messi's wicked curling free-kick from the edge of the area somehow threaded its way through a crowded six-yard box and clipped the inside of the post before ending in the net.From there Miami laid siege to the San Diego goal and it seemed only a matter of time before they took the lead. Messi, Luis Suarez, and Rodrigo De Paul all had good chances but somehow San Diego managed to hold on.The deadlock was broken in the 74th minute when De Paul released Suarez with a clever pass on the edge of the area and the 39-year-old Uruguayan veteran lashed home the finish for 2-1. That looked like it would be enough as the game entered the final 10 minutes, but San Diego stunned the home crowd with a goal that echoed their first.Tverskov once again found Dreyer with a pinpoint pass over the top and the Dane finished coolly to make it 2-2. A frenetic finish saw San Diego almost snatch victory deep into stoppage time, but St. Clair blocked Kieran Sargeant's late effort on the counter.

Qatar Chamber chairman Sheikh Khalifa bin Jassim al-Thani highlighted the role of the private sector, describing it as a main partner in development and a key driver of investment and job creation.He made the statement in light of the chamber’s participation in the ‘52nd session of the Arab Labour Conference’, which will run until September 20 in Cairo.According to Sheikh Khalifa, the Arab private sector requires stronger public-private partnerships, as well as supportive legislation and policies that foster business growth and create new opportunities for entrepreneurs across the Arab region.Organised by the Arab Labour Organisation, the annual conference convenes ministers of labour, alongside representatives of the tripartite production pillars; governments, employers, and workers, as well as regional and international bodies.Sheikh Khalifa is leading the chamber’s delegation, which includes Nasser Ahmed al-Meer, advisor to the Chairman for Labour Affairs; Abdulaziz al-Kuwari, director of Legal Affairs; Hamad Ali Muaiql al-Marri, director of Committees and Business Councils Department; and Al Anoud Zayed al-Muhannadi, director of Member Affairs.The agenda focuses on assessing the socio-economic impacts of climate change on the working environment and exploring the role of startups within digital transformation. Discussions will highlight how entrepreneurial ventures can drive economic diversification, lower unemployment, and foster sustainable job creation across the Arab region.Sheikh Khalifa emphasised that the conference serves as a pivotal platform for dialogue and collaboration among the Arab world's production pillars, helping unify regional efforts to address pressing labour market challenges.He noted that the current phase demands stronger joint Arab action and the exchange of best practices to build more resilient, competitive labour markets capable of adapting to rapid global shifts.
