SABIC sells assets across Europe and Americas worth $950mnShares fall over 5% following announcementSABIC is one the world's biggest petrochemicals companiesFirm has been restructuring and reviewing ‌portfolio to focus on core business Saudi Arabia's SABIC has agreed to sell its European petrochemical business ⁠and its Engineering Thermoplastics business in ⁠Europe and the Americas for a combined enterprise value of $950mn, as part of a restructuring during an industry slowdown. Shares in the chemicals company fell as much as 4.8% at 48.2 riyals ($12.85) per share in early trade in Riyadh on Thursday, touching the lowest level in nearly 17 years. The stock has lost 26.4% in the last ‌12 months.SABIC has agreed to divest its European petrochemical (EP) business, which includes manufacturing sites in the United Kingdom and Germany, to Munich-based ‍investment firm AEQUITA for an enterprise ⁠value of $500mn.It is also selling the ETP business in the Americas and Europe to German holding company Mutares at an enterprise value of $450mn. The business operates manufacturing sites in Canada, the US, Brazil and Spain.SABIC is restructuring as the chemicals industry faces weak demand, divesting low-return operations and focusing on core chemical operations.It is 70% owned by oil giant Aramco, which is cutting costs and selling assets as it balances capital expenditure with lower ​oil prices and shareholder payouts."These ‌transactions represent a continuation of our portfolio optimisation program, which started in 2022 and included ⁠previous actions, such ‍as the divestment of Functional Forms, Hadeed and Alba," CEO Abdulrahman al-Fageeh said in a statement.The company also said last year it was studying strategic options for its National Industrial Gases Company, including an initial public offering, as part of a broad review of ​its business.The divestments announced on Thursday are expected to improve its overall core profit margins and free cash flow generation, the firm said, adding it "is committed to ensuring a seamless separation" and minimize disruption to ongoing operations.Goldman Sachs advised SABIC on the EP transaction, while J.P. Morgan advised on the ETP deal. Lazard acted as independent financial advisor for both deals.

Scores of residents flocked to a cramped shop in Hong Kong's old district to bid farewell to the city's "king of umbrellas", who is retiring after spending decades repairing umbrellas at his family business.Established in 1842 during the Qing Dynasty, the Sun Rise Company was founded by the Yau family in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou.Current proprietor Yau Yiu-wai, 73, announced earlier this month that his 183-year-old family business would close its doors at year's end.The family-run shop has been passed down through five generations, but due to shifting consumer habits towards online shopping and his advancing age, it has to cease operations, Yau told AFP on Friday."We've upheld our family's reputation, and this legacy has come down to me... It truly pains me to end it," Yau said. "I'm sorry to my ancestors."After enduring wartime turmoil, the shop relocated to Hong Kong, eventually finding its place amid the bustling meat and vegetable vendors in Sham Shui Po district."(Today's) wheel of time rolled over me and crushed me beneath its weight," Yau said.News of the closure spread across social media, with one user calling it "another loss of a wonderful community business"."He genuinely cared about selling customers a good, practical umbrella," student Niki Lum told AFP, referring to Yau."I could tell he put his heart into running this shop," said the 20-year-old.Resident Peter Tam, 60, said witnessing the disappearance of these classic shops felt like the end of an era."It's such a pity... These are all pieces of history," he said. "And we ourselves are becoming history too."While most retailers rely on customers replacing damaged umbrellas with new ones, Yau said he aims for durability. "This is for environmental protection. It's a social responsibility."Those who brought umbrellas for repair included couples hoping to mend their relationships and married couples who had used umbrellas as tokens of affection.Yau said that fewer than five repairmen like him remain in Hong Kong practising this "barely profitable" umbrella trade.However, now Yau said he has no choice but to end the service he took pride in."I'm getting old. You have to forgive me, I just can't carry on any more," he said, adding he had suffered a stroke several years ago."The most important thing for you is to stay smart... and learn to be eco-friendly," he added. 

A huge electricity outage hit San Francisco on Saturday, leaving 130,000 residents without power for several hours at its peak, with the city's main provider saying all services would return overnight.Pacific Gas & Electric Company said in a statement on X that power had been restored to about 110,000 households by 7am Sunday, "with the remaining customers expected to be restored overnight”.The outage caused traffic jams and forced some businesses to close temporarily.Large parts of the West Coast tech hub, which has a population of more than 800,000 people, were plunged into darkness, with disruptions to public transport and many traffic lights not working on a busy Christmas shopping weekend before power began to be restored."I know this was a rough day," San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie said in a video posted on X from the city's emergency operations centre. "That is progress (on restoration of power)... but for those of you who do not have power, we want to make sure you stay safe, check on your neighbours."He said that police, fire department and other city officials had been sent out and asked residents to stay home if possible.Many traffic signals were out, leaving traffic police to manage intersections and the self-driving ride-hailing service Waymo had paused operation of its vehicles, he said.A fire at a substation had caused the blackout, Lurie said.Parts of the city were blanketed in fog and many businesses were forced to close for the day at the height of the holiday shopping period, the *San Francisco Chronicle newspaper reported, leaving normally bustling commercial areas quiet."A large power outage is impacting San Francisco – only call 9-1-1 for life safety emergencies, avoid non-essential travel, treat ⁠down traffic signals as four-way stops, keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed, and turn off major appliances to prevent surges," the San Francisco Department of Emergency Management said in a post on social media early Sunday.The abrupt fall in shoppers just days before Christmas was "devastating" for business, a manager of Black & Gold home goods store, told the *San Francisco Chronicle.Separately, Tesla chief executive Elon Musk said Sunday that the company's robotaxis were unaffected by the outage. 

Qatar Railways Company (Qatar Rail) announced that the total number of passengers who used the Doha Metro and Lusail Tram networks during the FIFA Arab Cup Qatar 2025 and the FIFA Intercontinental Cup Qatar 2025, from Dec. 1 to 18, 2025 reached 4,924,919 passengers, with 4,712,758 passengers travelling by Metro and 212,161 passengers using the Tram, with a daily average of 273,606 passengers across the Metro and Tram networks.The metro and tram played a key role in facilitating the movement of fans and visitors to and from the stadiums of both tournaments, as well as various event zones and key destinations across the country. This was achieved through delivering world-class transportation services and ensuring a safe, reliable, and seamless travel experience throughout the period.The Arab Cup Qatar 2025 was hosted across six stadiums: Lusail Stadium, Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium, Al Bayt Stadium, Education City Stadium, Khalifa International Stadium, and Stadium 974. Five of these stadiums were located within a short walking distance of metro stations, while fans were able to access Al Bayt Stadium via dedicated shuttle bus services from Lusail QNB Metro Station.Meanwhile, the three final matches of the FIFA Intercontinental Cup Qatar 2025, the Americas Derby, the Challenge Cup, and the Intercontinental Cup Final, were all held at Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium, which is directly connected to Al Riffa Mall of Qatar Station, on Dec. 10, 13, and 17, respectively.In terms of operational performance, a total of 48,422 train-trips were completed across the Doha Metro and Lusail Tram networks during the period from 1 to 18 December, comprising 41,843 metro trips and 6,579 tram trips.During the tournament, 34% of spectators used the metro to attend matches, while metro usage increased to 50% for the 5 stadiums directly connected to metro stations.On Dec. 18, which coincided with Qatar National Day celebrations, the Arab Cup Final and third-place playoff match, the highest daily ridership of the tournament was recorded, reaching 357,287 passengers, with 347,987 travelling by metro and 9,300 by tram.DECC, Lusail QNB and Msheireb stations were the busiest across the entire metro network. Within the Lusail Tram network, Legtaifiya Station was the busiest.Qatar Rail played a prominent role in supporting the successful hosting of the Arab Cup and the Intercontinental Cup, through the effective operation of its networks, which delivered a successful model for transporting fans and visitors throughout the tournament period. QatarEnergy has signed a long-term sales and purchase agreement (SPA) for up to 15 years with Buzwair Industrial Gases Factories WLL (Buzwair) for the supply of 20mn cubic feet per year of helium from Qatar’s world-class facilities in Ras Laffan, starting in September 2025.The SPA marks QatarEnergy’s first direct relationship with a local Qatari industrial gas company, reflecting the growing expertise and networks of regional suppliers in the global helium market. Welcoming the agreement, His Excellency the Minister of State for Energy Affairs, Saad Sherida al-Kaabi, who is also the President and CEO of QatarEnergy, said: “Buzwair has built a strong reputation in the helium industry. We are pleased to work with them and to expand our network of partners to include capable and trusted industrial gas companies from the State of Qatar.”Al-Kaabi added: “As one of the world’s leading suppliers of helium, QatarEnergy remains committed to supporting the exciting advancements of critical industries that depend on our high-purity and reliable helium supplies.”Helium plays a pivotal role in a wide range of advanced technologies and essential industrial applications, including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners, semiconductors, fiber optics, space exploration, deep sea diving, specialised welding, and other specialised applications.

Qatar National Vision 2030 serves as a blueprint for tech growth in the country that will further propel the success of its startup ecosystem, the chief executive of a Doha-based technology company has said.Michael Jordan, the CEO of Gem Soft, emphasised to Gulf Times that companies must align with Qatar’s national plan “rather than chase quick returns.”He emphasised that Qatar National Vision 2030 “is not just a slogan” but a framework. “If you look closely at that blueprint, in three to five years, Qatar is going to be one of the most booming ecosystems in the region,” Jordan pointed out.Asked to identify promising sectors that align with Qatar’s diversification strategy, Jordan cited medical research opportunities, citing the country’s health and medical institutions, as well as private institutions like Weill Cornell Medicine in Qatar (WCM-Q), among others.“That is an unbelievable opportunity,” noted Jordan, who also highlighted defence research and the broader research and development (R&D) space. “I don’t mean defence spending, but defence research. Every country is starting from the same place now. Everybody’s got to rethink how they’re going to approach these specific areas,” he said.Jordan stressed that Qatar’s focus on youth and education “is equally critical.” “Qatar’s focus on its youth and educational institutions is highly commendable and very important to me. As for its schools, we’re talking about some of the top universities both here and abroad,” he said.According to Jordan, companies are encouraged to engage with universities and interns here: "When a company is looking to expand, it's essential to connect with universities in Qatar and take on interns. By providing these young talents with opportunities, companies can foster growth and innovation," Jordan emphasised.Asked about unicorns and their impact on Qatar’s startup ecosystem, Jordan insisted that value creation must come first. “What is more important, the nomenclature of a unicorn or the fact that you have added value to the technological infrastructure of the country? If you add value, the money will come. But if all you’re shooting for is the money, then you’re ignoring the opportunity,” Jordan pointed out.Jordan also stressed that “trust is the foundation of business in Qatar.” He explained: “This is not a transactional society like North America or Western Europe. What’s important for people here is that they want to know who you are. People need to feel it, so one of the most important elements about business in Qatar is trust.”A Qatar Financial Authority-registered company, Jordan said Gem Soft is among the companies here that participated in the inaugural Web Summit Qatar. It also participated in the two-day World AI Summit Qatar, which concludes today.Jordan said the company chose Doha as its hub "precisely because Qatar’s long-term digital strategy aligns with its vision for sovereign and secure communication technologies."He explained that Gem Soft developed its fully sovereign, AI-assisted communication platform Gem Team “to directly support the ambitions of Qatar National Vision 2030 and help position the country as a regional leader in next-generation digital infrastructure.”Jordan stressed that Qatar’s commitment to innovation, security, and technological independence “is not just policy but a real catalyst for companies like ours to build, scale, and contribute to the nation’s future.” 

Qatar University (QU) has signed a strategic co-operation agreement with the Qatar Satellite Company, Es’hailSat, during the events of the recent MWC25 conference and in a separate ceremony on its sidelines, it was announced Monday. The agreement aims to support the development and deployment of nano-satellite technology within the QU through a partnership that brings together the university’s research and academic capabilities with Es’hailSat’s leading expertise in operating and managing satellites. This collaboration, it was explained, represents a significant step toward strengthening Qatar’s presence in the space sector and supporting the development of national capabilities in this vital field. QU vice-president for Research and Graduate Studies Prof Aiman Erbad described the collaboration with Es’hailSat as a strategic step that reinforces university’s efforts in advancing nano-satellite technology and expanding the horizons of scientific research and innovation in the field of space. “We take pride in the fact that this partnership contributes to building exceptional national capabilities and strengthens Qatar’s presence in the space sector through pioneering projects that combine industrial expertise with academic excellence,” he said. Es’hailSat vice-president (Commercial) Hamad Omar al-Mannai said that the partnership aims to broaden the scope of scientific research and innovation within the space sector. “We take pride in contributing to the development of exceptional national capabilities and enhancing Qatar’s stature in the space industry through high-quality projects that merge industrial expertise with academic excellence,” he said. “Together, we are poised to make significant strides in this vital area of research and technological advancement.” The agreement outlined the launch of joint projects in the design, deployment, and operation of nano-satellite missions, with a focus on scientific research, technological development, and outreach in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The agreement also included the exchange of expertise, technical knowledge, and resources between both parties to ensure the success of future initiatives. The nano-satellite development initiative at the QU began in 2018, encompassing multidisciplinary student projects as well as research projects funded by the Qatar Research, Development & Innovation Programme. The QU hosts the country’s only academic satellite ground station, a key outcome of this initiative. 

Qatar Railways Company (Qatar Rail) has announced that the Doha Metro and Lusail Tram networks are fully prepared to welcome and transport fans attending the 2025 FIFA Arab Cup and the FIFA Intercontinental Cup Qatar 2025 Finals, taking place from Dec 1 to 18. Service hours for both the Doha Metro and Lusail Tram during Dec 1 to 18 will be extended on days with late matches to ensure spectators are able to use the Metro for their journey back home after the match. This also includes metrolink and metroexpress services. Additionally, Park and Ride facilities are available at selected stations, allowing fans to park their vehicles and continue their journeys via the metro. The Park and Ride facilities at Education City will not be available on days with matches in the adjacent stadium. The "Park and Ride” facility at Lusail QNB stations will not be available throughout the tournament, with the facility at Qatar University available instead. To meet the increased demand during the tournaments, Qatar Rail said that 6-car trains will operate on the Red Line, 110 total trains of the Doha Metro fleet will be in service during peak hours to ensure smooth passenger flow. Qatar Rail also said that it has deployed dedicated maintenance teams on its various facilities. All stations have undergone a thorough process to ensure they are ready to receive a much higher number of passengers than usual. Additional maintenance teams will be stationed throughout the network to provide rapid response capabilities and address any emergencies. Qatar Rail has also installed additional wayfinding signage across key metro stations directly linked to the tournament venues. Trained staff will be deployed to guide passengers and fans inside stations and on trains, and to offer additional support for passengers with disabilities. Trained event teams will also be deployed at stadium stations and other key stations, where the highest footfall is expected during match days, including dedicated ticketing desks to fulfil the high demand during the tournament days. On this occasion, Chief of Strategy and Business Development at Qatar Rail Ajlan Eid al-Enazi said: "We look forward to welcoming fans of the 2025 FIFA Arab Cup and the FIFA Intercontinental Cup Qatar 2025 Finals aboard the Doha Metro and Lusail Tram, ensuring an exceptional travel experience. In coordination with our partners in relevant entities, we are working to guarantee smooth and convenient journeys for fans throughout the match days. The Metro has become a key part of the fan experience during major sporting events, and we remain fully committed to ensuring seamless crowd movement, prioritising passenger safety, and elevating every aspect of the fan journey across our networks." The 2025 FIFA Arab Cup will take place across six stadiums: Lusail, Ahmad bin Ali, Al Bayt, Education City, Khalifa International, and Stadium 974. Five stadiums are conveniently located within walking distance from the nearest metro station, including Stadium 974 via Ras Bu Abboud Station, Education City Stadium via Education City Station, Ahmad bin Ali Stadium via Al Riffa — Mall of Qatar Station, Khalifa International Stadium via Sport City Station, Lusail Stadium via Lusail QNB Station. Meanwhile, Al Bayt Stadium will be connected through a dedicated shuttle bus service from Lusail QNB Station. The FIFA Intercontinental Cup Qatar 2025 will feature its final three matches, the FIFA Derby of the Americas, the FIFA Challenger Cup, and the FIFA Intercontinental Cup Final, at Ahmad bin Ali Stadium on Dec. 10, 13, and 17. Regarding Lusail Tram services, The Orange Line will operate only between Legtaifiya and Al Wessil stations. The Pink Line service will operate as usual, and the Turquoise Line will not be in service due safety requirements around Lusail Stadium and Lusail Boulevard. To facilitate the T100 Triathlon event being held in Lusail from Dec 10 to 14, Pink Line services will operate only between Legtaifiya and Tarfat South station during the times when the races are on. To ensure a smooth experience for fans, residents, and tourists during the Arab Cup, A 24/7 customer contact centre will ensure continuous support to visitors and residents looking for information and/or assistance. Our Customer Service Centre 105 will implement a robust preparedness plan focused on scalability, multilingual support, and rapid response. Customers can also connect with us on WhatsApp 44433105. To also ensure fan safety, Qatar Rail advises customers to plan their trips in advance, arrive early at stations to avoid congestion, and follow instructions from customer service staff at stations and aboard trains. Service updates guiding fans to stadiums will be displayed on digital screens inside stations and trains throughout the event. Qatar Rail’s customer service team, representing diverse nationalities and languages, has undergone specialized training to support fans during the tournaments across the Doha Metro Hong Kong police arrested the bosses of a construction company on suspicion of manslaughter Thursday over the city’s worst fire in nearly 80 years, which killed at least 83 people with scores more listed as missing. By the early hours of Friday, firefighters had mostly contained the blaze raging for more than 24 hours, ripping through the Wang Fuk Court housing complex in the northern district of Tai Po. The estate had been undergoing renovations and was wrapped in bamboo scaffolding and green mesh. Most of the victims were found in two high-rise blocks in the eight-tower complex, Deputy Director of Fire Services Derek Armstrong Chan said. He said firefighters found residents who were alive in several of the buildings, but gave no further details. The South China Morning Post reported one survivor was found on the stairwell of one of the buildings.Rescuers battled intense heat, thick smoke and collapsing scaffolding and debris as they fought to reach residents feared trapped on the upper floors of the complex. “We expect the fire to be fully put out tonight,” Chan said. “We’ll continue to douse water to lower the temperatures,” he added. A distraught woman carrying her daughter’s graduation photograph searched for her child outside a shelter, one of eight that authorities said are housing 900 residents. “She and her father are still not out yet,” said the 52-year-old, who gave only her surname, Ng, as she sobbed. “They didn’t have water to save our building.” Police arrested two directors and an engineering consultant of Prestige Construction, a firm contracted to perform maintenance on the buildings. Police said those arrested were under suspicion of manslaughter for using unsafe materials. “We have reason to believe that the company’s responsible parties were grossly negligent, which led to this accident and caused the fire to spread uncontrollably, resulting in major casualties,” Police Superintendent Eileen Chung said. Prestige did not answer repeated calls for comment. Police seized bidding documents, a list of employees, 14 computers and three mobile phones in a raid of the company’s office, the government added. WORST FIRE SINCE 1948 The confirmed death toll rose to 83 as of midnight in Hong Kong Thursday, Hong Kong’s emergency responders said. That made it Hong Kong’s deadliest fire since 1948, when 176 people were killed in a warehouse blaze. The government said in the very early hours of Thursday that 279 people were listed as missing, but that figure has not been updated for 24 hours. In a telegram to Hong Kong’s bishop, Cardinal Stephen Chow Sau-yan, Pope Leo sent “spiritual solidarity to all those suffering from the effects of this calamity, especially the injured and the families who grieve”. Hong Kong’s leader, John Lee, said the government would set up a HK$300mn ($39mn) fund to help residents while companies including automakers Xiaomi, Xpeng and Geely as well as the charity foundation of Alibaba’s founder Jack Ma and Tencent announced donations.On the second night after the blaze, dozens of evacuees set up mattresses in a nearby mall, with many saying official evacuation centres should be saved for those with greater need. People – from elderly residents to schoolchildren – wrapped themselves in duvets and huddled in tents outside a McDonald’s restaurant and convenience shops as a steady stream of volunteers handed out snacks and toiletries. The eight blocks of the tightly-packed complex of 2,000 apartments were home to more than 4,600 people in the financial hub, which is struggling to overcome chronic shortages of affordable housing. Police also said they found foam material sealing windows on one unaffected building, installed in the year-long maintenance work. The city’s development bureau has discussed gradually replacing bamboo scaffolding with metal scaffolding as a safety measure. China’s President Xi Jinping urged an “all-out effort” to extinguish the fire and minimise casualties and losses, state broadcaster CCTV said. The leadership of both the Hong Kong government and China’s Communist Party moved quickly to show they attached utmost importance to a tragedy seen as a potential test of Beijing’s grip on the semi-autonomous region. Hong Kong’s sky-high property prices have long been a trigger for discontent and the tragedy could stoke resentment towards authorities despite efforts to tighten political and national security control. “27TH FLOOR, ROOM 1: HE IS DEAD” An online app showed reports of missing persons submitted through a linked Google document that detailed residents of individual towers and rooms. It includes descriptions such as “Mother-in-law in her 70s, missing” or “one boy and one girl” or “Rooftop: 33-year-old male.” One simply read: “27th floor, room 1: He is dead.” Reuters could not independently verify the information on the app. The fire has prompted comparisons to London’s Grenfell Tower inferno, which killed 72 people in 2017. That fire was blamed on firms f
