Belgium's new coach Mark van Bommel did not hesitate to accept the job offer even if there might have been a chance to take over the national team of his native Netherlands, who are still looking for a coach after the World Cup.Van Bommel, in his first press conference since his appointment late last month, said he jumped at the offer to replace Rudi Garcia as Belgium coach."Did I want to wait for the Dutch national team? No, not at all. I didn't even think about that," he said. "As a coach, being in charge of a national team is one of the best jobs there is. You work with the best players in a country. And there aren't that many really top countries."I am very happy to be here. It is different from coaching a club, but this challenge suits me well. In the past two years, I have had many offers, but none that I was convinced of. Things have moved very quickly here. Coaching a country, and certainly Belgium, is an honour. Every coach wants to do this."Belgium reached the World Cup quarter-finals last month, but Garcia did not have his contract renewed, with Van Bommel, a former defender with Barcelona, Bayern Munich and AC Milan and who played for the Dutch in the 2010 World Cup final, quickly named as his replacement.Van Bommel, 49, said winning was top of his agenda. "As a footballer and a coach, you always want to win," he told reporters. "You don't know what will happen along the way, but you want to go as far as possible. In the Netherlands, they often say: 'We are going to be world champions'. However, there are quite a few factors involved. So I don't want to go around shouting that we are going to win the European Championship, even though that is the reason why we are playing."Belgium will start first, however, with the Nations League and Van Bommel's debut as coach is against Italy in Rome on September 25, followed by two matches against Turkey and one against France in the September-October international window.Van Bommel was repeatedly asked whether he might try to persuade goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who said after the World Cup he wanted a break from the national team, to keep playing."We are going to talk to Thibaut first without passing judgment. He has given his opinion, and at this moment, we are not going to decide about it. That wouldn't be right if you have only spoken to each other once," the new coach said. "Perhaps he has already revised his opinion. As soon as he is back in full training, we will fly there and talk." 

Former striker Diego Forlan has been appointed head coach of the Uruguay national team following their disastrous World Cup campaign, the country's football association (AUF) announced Thursday.Forlan will take over, reportedly on an interim basis, from Marcelo Bielsa who stepped down following Uruguay's group-stage exit from the World Cup."Diego Forlan is coming home (to take charge of) the Under-20 national team and the senior national team," the AUF said in a short statement.The agreement with Forlan, who won the Golden Ball award for player of the tournament at the 2010 World Cup, was finalised after weeks of negotiations.The 47-year-old will take over as interim coach but his contract keeps the door open for an extension, AUF sources recently told AFP.He will be in charge of the team for friendlies in September, October and March.Two-time world champions Uruguay are reeling after failing to get out of their group for a second successive World Cup.Back-to-back draws with Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde put them in unexpected danger of crashing out, before their elimination was confirmed by a loss to eventual champions Spain.The 71-year-old Bielsa was widely criticised for his tactics and for the decision to coax Fernando Muslera out of international retirement, with the veteran goalkeeper then making a string of errors.Forlan has little coaching experience despite enjoying a stellar playing career.He made his coaching debut during the 2020 season with former club Penarol but left the post after just 11 matches due to poor results.Forlan's only other managerial stint came in 2021, when he spent 12 games in charge of Atenas in the Uruguayan second division.He is highly regarded, though, in Uruguay after scoring 36 international goals, including five during their run to the 2010 World Cup semi-finals, in 112 appearances.Forlan, alongside strike partner Luis Suarez, was also a key member of Uruguay's 2011 Copa America-winning side.He enjoyed prolific spells at both Villarreal and Atletico Madrid in Spain, winning the European Golden Shoe award with both clubs.Forlan endured a difficult stint at Manchester United between 2001 and 2004, despite winning the Premier League in 2002/03. 

Mauricio Pochettino has signed a contract extension to remain the head coach of the United States national team until the 2030 World Cup, US Soccer announced Monday.The 54-year-old took over in 2024 and led the USA to the last 16 at the recent World Cup, which they co-hosted with Canada and Mexico."It has become clear to us that there is tremendous potential to make the men's national team program even stronger," said Argentinian Pochettino, whose coaching staff have also agreed new contracts."The passion we experienced from the fans throughout the World Cup only strengthened our belief in what is possible here..."We want to try to have a lasting impact on the sport in the country that has welcomed us so warmly and for that impact to extend beyond results on the field."The Americans won three matches at a World Cup for the first time before being knocked out by Belgium, following a huge controversy over FIFA's decision to suspended striker Folarin Balogun's ban for a red card.Former Tottenham and Paris Saint-Germain boss Pochettino was named coach two years ago, after previous boss Gregg Berhalter left following a group-stage exit from the 2024 Copa America which the USA hosted.Pochettino helped turn things around and led the team to the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup final, which they lost 2-1 to Mexico.He had been linked with a return to European club football, but will instead stay with the US until the next World Cup, slated to be largely held in Spain, Portugal and Morocco."Mauricio has built a culture where players trust the group, trust the process and trust each other," said US Soccer president Cindy Parlow Cone."We saw the impact of that belief in the way the team grew, competed and performed on the world's biggest stage."The USA have not reached the quarter-finals of a men's World Cup since 2002, and hopes were high a partisan home crowd could carry them to at least that stage.But after the Balogun affair, a fired-up Belgium quashed those hopes last month with a crushing 4-1 victory.

Roberto Mancini has been named the head coach of Italy's national team for a second time, tasked with revitalising the Azzurri who have missed out on the last three World Cups, FIGC president Giovanni Malago said Tuesday. Technical director Roberto Maldini, who reportedly threatened to resign if Mancini was appointed, has been replaced by Claudio Ranieri. "Today we have a new coach and a new technical director," Malago told reporters, announcing another press conference with Mancini and Ranieri on Wednesday. "I felt that the person who should be and become the Italian national football team's head coach was Roberto Mancini, for a whole series of considerations for which, as always, I honestly take responsibility." Gennaro Gattuso resigned as Italy coach after their World Cup qualification play-off final defeat by Bosnia and Herzegovina in March. The 61-year-old Mancini was previously Italy boss from 2018 until 2023, leading them to the Euro 2020 title. He has been preferred to another ex-national team coach in Antonio Conte. Maldini had also apparently said he would resign if Conte was chosen, reportedly wanting Brazil-born former Italy midfielder Thiago Motta to be given the job. Andrea Pirlo, who had been tipped to take charge, announced on Monday that he was no longer a candidate. The former midfielder had come under heavy criticism over his controversial ties with a Russian sports-betting company and what detractors viewed as a limited coaching resume. Divisive choice Mancini's appointment, however, remains divisive despite leading Italy to the Euro 2020 title and a 37-match unbeaten streak. His abrupt resignation as Italy coach in the summer of 2023 to take charge of Saudi Arabia reportedly damaged his standing with many senior FIGC officials, particularly as the Azzurri were struggling in their qualifying campaign for Euro 2024. Mancini left his job with the Saudi side just 14 months later. He was most recently coach of Qatari club Al Sadd, with whom he signed a two-year deal last November. Now he will turn his attentions to the job of taking Italy back to the top of the international game. The four-time world champions have not reached a World Cup since 2014, and have not even played a knock-out stage match at the tournament since winning the 2006 final against France on penalties. The one success in that time was the European Championship victory, also secured in a shoot-out against England five years ago. Their title defence, with Luciano Spalletti at the helm, ended with a last-16 loss to Switzerland in 2024. Mancini also won three consecutive Serie A titles as Inter Milan boss between 2005 and 2008. He then led Manchester City to their first English league title since 1968 with a famous last-day victory over QPR in the 2011-12 Premier League season.  

Jurgen Klopp has been named Germany coach, the former Liverpool manager given the task of rebuilding the struggling European giants, the national federation (DFB) announced on Friday.Klopp's appointment was widely expected for weeks and his contract will see him through to the 2030 World Cup co-hosted by Spain, Portugal and Morocco, as well as the three centenary matches planned for that year in South America.The 59-year-old spoke publicly of his desire to take on the role after predecessor Julian Nagelsmann's resignation earlier in July.Nagelsmann fell on his sword after a disappointing last-32 defeat at the hands of Paraguay, Germany's third consecutive early World Cup exit since winning the tournament in 2014.As the German FA's preferred candidate, Klopp's willingness to take the job accelerated Nagelsmann's departure."It's a great honour for me to be sitting here today," Klopp told a press conference called by the DFB to announce his appointment in Frankfurt."This is ideally the high point of my career, of my life, my professional life. I will give it everything I have," he said.However he warned the assembled reporters that "if you tomorrow you start saying: 'He's crap', then I'm off".DFB President Bernd Neuendorf said Klopp's contract would start on August 15 and run until summer 2030.Since 2025, Klopp has been under contract until 2029 with Austrian energy drink maker Red Bull as "Head of Global Soccer", where he oversaw the football clubs affiliated with the company such as RB Leipzig, Red Bull Salzburg and the New York Red Bulls.Neuendorf thanked Red Bull for their willingness to end the contract early as Klopp would need his "full concentration" for the new job.The DFB did not have to pay a fee but will instead make a donation of a million euros ($1.1m) to Red Bull's Wings for Life charity foundation, which supports research into spinal cord injuries. World Cup failureHaving repeatedly said his time in the dugout was over, Klopp returns with the mammoth task of returning the struggling Germans to the top of the international game.Germany have won four World Cups - the equal most of any European team - and three European Championships, one behind record holders Spain, but have struggled in recent years.The team crashed out of this summer's World Cup after losing to Paraguay on penalties in the round of 32.It was the third successive World Cup failure for the Germans since winning their fourth title in 2014.In a decade since making the semi-finals of Euro 2016, Germany have won just one knockout match across three World Cups and two Euros.Having also tasted success as manager of Mainz and Borussia Dortmund, Klopp stepped down as Liverpool coach in 2024 after a wildly successful spell, winning all available trophies.Under Klopp, Liverpool won the Premier League to break a 30-year drought and lifted the Champions League trophy for the sixth time.The DFB had long courted Klopp and believed he was the perfect candidate to take over from Nagelsmann.Klopp will work alongside Rudi Voeller, the 1990 World Cup winning striker has been the team's sporting director since autumn 2023 and whose contract runs for another two years.The challenges facing Klopp and his staff are numerous.The new coach will look to build the team round the young talent of Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala, both 23.Joshua Kimmich has worn the captain's armband since autumn 2024, but will be 33 by the time of Euro 2028.In goal, Manuel Neuer came out of international retirement for one last stint at the World Cup at the age of 40.Klopp's hotly anticipated first squad will come in mid-September for four Nations League matches, the first being against the Netherlands on September 24. 

Mark van Bommel is the new coach of the Belgian national football team, the Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) announced on Friday.The 49-year-old former Dutch international succeeds Frenchman Rudi Garcia, who stepped down having guided the 'Red Devils' to the World Cup quarter-finals."Mark van Bommel has signed a contract that will see him lead Belgium's national team through UEFA EURO 2028," read an RBFA statement.Van Bommel, who was an uncompromising midfielder and key member of the robust Netherlands side that lost to Spain in the 2010 World Cup final, said it was a "great honour" to have been appointed."I would like to thank the Royal Belgian Football Association for their confidence in me," he said."Belgium has outstanding players and enormous potential."Together with my coaching staff, we want to build a team that is disciplined, ambitious and brave enough to compete with the very best."Success is never guaranteed, but hard work, honesty and commitment are."After hanging up his boots in 2013, Van Bommel has cut his teeth as coach of PSV Eindhoven, Wolfsburg and Antwerp.Van Bommel has been without a team since departing Belgian top-flight club Antwerp in June 2024, a year after having guided them to a first league title in 66 years.Belgium, made up of a mix of the last of their ageing 'golden generation' and younger talent, improved as the World Cup went on.They exited after being beaten 2-1 by eventual champions Spain, though they had the consolation of being the only team to breach the Spanish defence.Local media reported differences of opinion between Garcia and several players, as well as with technical director Vincent Mannaert, who was unhappy with certain group-stage performances.Garcia's departure, however, was met with bewilderment by many supporters on social media.However, according to the media, Belgian football chiefs were keen to hire a younger coach than 62-year-old Garcia.They achieved that aim with van Bommel."I am truly delighted that Mark van Bommel and his assistants have agreed to take on this challenge," said Mannaert."They are highly motivated and ambitious, and I am convinced that, with their international experience as both coaches and players, they will be perfectly placed to help our Belgian Red Devils continue to improve, achieve results and reach their full potential, both individually and as a team."Van Bommel's first challenge will be three Nations League matches, beginning with Italy on September 25.

Portugal appointed Jorge Jesus as their new national team coach on Friday and he said he would continue to call on veteran superstar Cristiano Ronaldo if he is available, insisting the forward will "never" be a problem.The 41-year-old striker was criticised for his World Cup performances this summer under predecessor Roberto Martinez as Portugal were eliminated in the last 16 by Spain.Ronaldo, who said he has appeared at his last World Cup, has not decided whether he will continue to play for the national team."As long as he's playing and is in a condition to be selected, I will pick him, within certain limits and under the conditions that I consider best for the national team," Jorge told reporters Friday at his presentation.The 71-year-old journeyman coach said he has not spoken to Ronaldo yet but that they would discuss the former Manchester United and Real Madrid star's future in the game."I haven't spoken with Cris yet... Cris is never going to be a problem for the national team. Not for the national team, nor for me," Jorge explained."Cris is a symbol of Portuguese football. Cris is a symbol of the national team... that will forever be in the history books."I had great pleasure working with him this past year... (it's) easy to work with him..."We're going to have a conversation between the two of us about what he wants to do with the future of his career."Jorge coached five-time Ballon d'Or winner Ronaldo at Al Nassr before leaving in May after guiding the club to the Saudi Pro League title."I know (Ronaldo) wants to keep playing at Al Nassr, because, as you know, I spent a year with him," he added."He always told me, 'I'm going to end my career at Al-Nassr'."Jorge will lead Portugal until after the 2030 World Cup, which the country is hosting along with Spain and Morocco. 

Croatia's most successful football coach, Zlatko Dalic, resigned on Wednesday, ending a tenure that included taking the team to the 2018 World Cup final."As much as I still feel the ambition and desire to achieve new successes with Croatia, I feel that this is the right moment to bring this incredible era to a close," he said in a statement."I am leaving with a full heart and proud that I have made my contribution to the greatest achievements in the history of Croatian football," the 59-year-old added.Dalic took over as coach in October 2017.Apart from their final defeat in Russia, where Croatia, led by Luka Modric, lost to France, Dalic guided the nation to the 2022 Qatar World Cup semi-finals and the Euro 2020 last 16."Zlatko's name will remain forever written in golden letters in the history of Croatian football," Croatian Football Federation (HSN) head Marijan Kustic said.Croatia failed to move into the last 16 of this year's World Cup, losing 2-1 in a gripping match against Portugal earlier this month.Local media are tipping former national coach Slaven Bilic as Dalic's likely successor.Bilic, 57, led Croatia from 2006-12. He recorded a higher winning percentage than Dalic, with 42 victories, 15 draws and eight defeats in 65 matches but his best performance in a major tournament was to reach the quarterfinals of the 2008 Euros where Croatia lost on penalties to Turkey.Bilic was a defender who played 44 times for Croatia. He has coached several clubs, including West Ham United, where he played in the mid-1990s.The former defender's last coaching position was at Saudi Arabia's Al-Fateh, during the 2023-2024 season.Dalic has repeatedly said he considered his job the "biggest privilege and pleasure a coach can have".His most notable previous coaching spells came outside Europe -- he was in charge of top Saudi Arabian clubs Al-Faisaly and Al-Hilal.In 2014, the former defensive midfielder took over Al Ain in the United Arab Emirates, where he was named coach of the year twice, leading the club to the 2016 Asian Champions League final. 

Saying Portugal's national team needs "a new voice," manager Roberto Martinez confirmed he is stepping down after the 1-0 loss to Spain on Monday in their round of 16 match in Arlington, Texas.Martinez has coached Portugal since 2023 and ‌planned to leave his post after the team's run to what he ​hoped was a World ‌Cup championship. His contract was due to expire after the tournament. "Yes, this ‌is my last ⁠game with the ‌national team," said Martinez, a native ‌of Spain who turns 53 on July 13. "I'm proud. I've had 45 games, and ⁠I felt welcomed in Portugal and loved. It's a memory I'll take with me always. "It was a pleasure, a source of pride and responsibility. It's hard, but it's the end of a cycle and in the context it makes absolute sense." Martinez said, "It's important to have a new voice now" and added that it was fair for Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proenca, who was appointed last year, ​to be able to choose his own manager. "I want to thank the president and the board for their support and for providing me and my coaching staff with all the necessary ‌conditions," Martinez said. "I appreciate their strength ⁠and support, but ​it is the end of a cycle."Portugal is a co-host of the ​2030 World Cup along with Spain and Morocco and is automatically qualified.Martinez managed Belgium's national team from 2016-22 and also coached Everton, Swansea City and Wigan Athletic. He led Portugal to the 2024 European Championship quarterfinals, then the UEFA Nations League title in June 2025.Portugal finished second in this World Cup in Group K, going 1-0-2 (5 points) with a 5-0 win over Uzbekistan and draws against the Democratic Republic of the Congo (1-1) and group winner Colombia (0-0). Last Thursday, Portugal held off Croatia 2-1 in the round of 32 before elimination on Monday, which ‌also marked the final World Cup ‌game for legendary attacker Cristiano Ronaldo, ⁠41. "We didn't fail," Martinez said. "We lost a game against a team that's one ⁠of the favorites. We showed incredible ⁠individual talent. Winning or losing is about details in the big games, with big teams. ... You fail when you don't try to win, and we tried to win until the last minute."Martinez said to those thinking Ronaldo should have been subbed for late in the game that he was physically capable of playing at least 90 minutes and delivering ​the needed goal."This is not the time to look for anything beyond the fact that we are talking about a football icon," Martinez said of Ronaldo."There aren't many Cristiano Ronaldos. I will forever appreciate what he tried to do in this World Cup, because his dream was to win it. He was an incredible example of a captain, both on a footballing level and a human level. "His impact inside the dressing room and within the group of players is something the entire coaching staff ‌and all the ​players will carry with us forever. He is an example of football, of an athlete and of the human being behind the athlete."

Morocco coach Mohamed Ouabhi believes his team is primed to make a deep run at the World Cup, declaring that the Atlas Lions could be "unstoppable" if they play to their potential.The Moroccans, beaten semi-finalists at the 2022 World Cup, advanced to the last 16 on Monday after winning a thrilling battle with the Netherlands on penalties in Monterrey. It was another stylish display by the African champions, who dominated for long periods in a match that finished 1-1 after extra-time. Ouabhi said Moroccan football is now reaping the benefits of the 2022 team's groundbreaking exploits in becoming the first African team to reach the World Cup semi-finals. "The World Cup in Qatar changed the mentality of the Morocco team, and I'm well placed to speak about this," said Ouabhi, who last year coached Morocco to a momentous victory at the Under-20 World Cup in Chile."Moroccan players in Morocco believe in themselves, the supporters, the fans believe in us as well. It's so important. They're demanding, but it's because they know just how far we can go," he said.Morocco face co-hosts Canada in the last 16, with a potential quarter-final meeting with France looming on the horizon.Ouabhi said there would be no question of complacency against Canada."We know that it's game after game, and people think that it's kept to be easy for us, it's going to be a walk in the park for Morocco, which is not the case. Canada is a team that is going to be difficult for us."But Ouabhi said Morocco could go even further than the 2022 team if they fired on all cylinders."What we need to be telling ourselves is no one can stop us," he said. "We're unstoppable if we play the football that we know how to play."But nobody is unbeatable. And I tell my guys that as well. If we get things wrong, we'll go home, and we need to ensure that we have all the tools that we're using, the tools in our arsenal to go as far as we can, and that's the mentality that we want all of our players in Morocco to have."  Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman meanwhile said Morocco's emergence reflected the quality of African football. "It's very clear watching this World Cup that African teams have greatly improved in tactical sense, and also in the way they play their matches," Koeman said."Morocco is the country that, in terms of talents, really generates good players, young players that continue to join the major clubs in Europe. It's not without a reason why they have a higher ranking than the Netherlands."
