Frances Tiafoe overcame Lorenzo Musetti 7-6(2) 7-5 on Friday to reach the Cincinnati Open semi-finals, setting up an all-American clash with Brandon Nakashima as the U.S. Open approaches.Tiafoe needed more than two hours and four match points to complete the win over 10th seed Musetti on a humid night in Ohio, with nearby thunderstorms threatening but never interrupting play. Tiafoe, seeking to revive a summer disrupted by early exits in Washington and Montreal as well as a wrist injury, played aggressively throughout, firing 18 winners before sealing victory with an unreturnable serve.Tiafoe owns a 6-1 career record against Nakashima but will face a player in confident form after Nakashima rallied from a break down in the deciding set to beat fellow American and sixth seed Taylor Fritz 7-6(9) 4-6 6-3. Nakashima has now reached the last four at back-to-back Masters 1000 events after his run in Montreal last week, capping another impressive turnaround on the North American hard courts ahead of the U.S. Open, which starts later this month.Nakashima, who came into the match with a 1-4 record against Fritz, edged a tight first set, with both players dominant on serve as the match went to a thrilling tiebreak. After trading leads and mini-breaks, Nakashima finally converted his fifth set point when Fritz sent a ball just long. Fritz responded strongly, using aggressive returning to break Nakashima early in the second before closing out the set with an ace to force a decider.Fritz capitalised on his opponent's unforced errors to break serve and move ahead 3-2 in the decider, but the momentum swung back almost immediately as Nakashima recovered from 30-0 down to convert his second break point of the match and level at 3-3. Nakashima then won the final three games as Fritz's errors accumulated and the 27th seed's confidence continued to grow, serving out a win that extended the hottest run of his career and gave him his fourth top-10 victory of the season. BEJLEK CONTINUES GIANT-KILLING RUNIn the women's draw, 20-year-old Sara Bejlek followed her upset of world number one Aryna Sabalenka with a comeback win over American Madison Keys 3-6 6-4 7-6(5) on Friday. The unseeded Czech will play in her first WTA 1000 semi-final after coming through a tense deciding-set tiebreak. "I believe in myself much more than I ever have before," Bejlek said in an on-court interview.She will next face American Coco Gauff, who eased past Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk 6-2 6-2 in just 70 minutes. The 22-year-old reached her second Cincinnati semi-final and remains on course for a repeat of her 2023 title triumph. "Obviously the next match is going to be tough against Sara," said Gauff, who advanced to her fifth WTA 1000 semi-final of the year. "She's had some incredible wins. But I'm looking forward to the challenge." 

A former champion at the ATP-WTA Cincinnati Masters was knocked out on Friday by a South American clay-courter while the tournament's 2022 finalist survived into the second round.With 64 seeds in the men's and women's draw of the last major warm-up prior to the August 30 US Open only going into action from Saturday, interest focused on the fate of 2017 winner Grigor Dimitrov and 2022 runner-up Stefanos Tsitsipas.The popular Dimitrov was unable to hold onto a 4-1 lead in the third set against Argentine Sebastian Baez, exiting in the first round 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 as he lost the last five games of the encounter.The 35-year-old Dimitrov, his ranking down to 138 and playing on a wild card, was bidding for his first Cincinnati victory in five years.Baez goes on to next play American Learner Tien, a semi-finalist this week in Montreal.Tsitsipas, a one-time world number three now standing 49th after a months-long slump in form, got past Valentin Royer of France 7-6 (7/4), 7-5 after struggling somewhat to close out the victory, which sent him into a match with second seed Felix Auger-Aliassime.The Greek led a set and 5-2 but was broken as he served for victory, with Royer saving two match points on the way to 5-all.Tsitsipas managed a late break two games later on his sixth match point to advance in two hours."I'm trying to come to the net as much as possible," Tsitsipas said. "Whenever a ball is short I try to capture it inside the baseline. That's where I shined the most."I felt confidence running through my veins. My offensive strategy helped me today, my composure was excellent."Tsitsipas admitted he was tested at the end as he tried to close out against Royer, and found himself stalling as he missed conversion on winning chances."It was nerve-wracking at the end with those match points I was not able to capture," the Greek said. "It would have been easy to get tight."I had to remind myself to stay loose and play aggressive. If I was going to miss, at least I knew I had done the right thing."Tsitsipas, now several months into his coaching split with his father, has lifted his ranking to 49th after coming through qualifying at the Montreal Masters, where he lost in the second round. Venus skid hits 14Hubert Hurkacz, a 2023 semi-finalist, advanced 6-2, 6-4 over qualifying lucky loser Sho Shimabukuro while Italian Matteo Berrettini defeated Thomas Droguet 3-6, 6-2, 6-4, playing only his second match since Wimbledon due to injury.In the WTA draw, Colombian Emilia Arango handed Venus Williams a 14th straight loss dating to July of last year, defeating the fading seven-time Grand Slam champion who is currently ranked 615th in 66 minutes by 6-2, 6-2.The 46-year-old Williams was given a wild card entry at an event where she reached a semi-final a dozen years ago. She has played and lost 11 times this season while competing on organiser free entries.Czech Sara Bejlek allowed compatriot and 2016 titleholder Karolina Pliskova only two games in a first-round 6-0, 6-2 rout. 

World number one Jannik Sinner has pulled out of the Cincinnati Open due to a right knee injury, the Italian announced Sunday."After consulting with my doctors and my team, I have to announce that I need to withdraw from the Masters 1000 tournament in Cincinnati," he said in a statement posted on the ATP website."My right knee has been bothering me and even though we have been working hard with my medical team, I have to accept that I'm not ready to compete yet."The tournament begins on Thursday, the same day as the end of the Masters event in Montreal, which Sinner also missed.The five-time Grand Slam winner had been on a six-tournament winning streak at 1000 level heading into the North American hard-court swing, before skipping the event in Canada.The 24-year-old said at the time the decision was taken to "prioritise my health".Sinner's subsequent withdrawal from Cincinnati follows that of world number two Carlos Alcaraz as the Spaniard continues to battle a wrist injury.The Cincinnati Open and Montreal Masters are the two principal warm-up events ahead of the final Grand Slam of the season, the US Open, which starts in New York on August 30.
