Trading cards are moving beyond childhood nostalgia and becoming a growing collectables market in Qatar, with CardzCon 2026 attracting more than 5,000 visitors and over 70 vendors at its first edition.Held on October 9 and 10 at Sheraton Grand Doha Resort & Convention Hotel, the two-day convention brought together collectors, traders, vendors, and enthusiasts from Qatar, the GCC, and international markets, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, and Hong Kong.Organised by Art of Cardz and supported by Qatar Calendar, powered by Visit Qatar, the event featured trading card game (TCG) cards, graded cards, sealed products, sports cards, collectible figures and rare finds. Visitors also joined live pack openings and interactive activities, as well as buying, selling, and trading.Abdulrahman Totonji, founder of Art of Cardz and managing partner of SHIFT Group, said the convention was created to fill a market gap as collectors sought ways to connect beyond online purchases.“Collectors weren't just looking for a shop to buy packs; they wanted a real community space to trade, learn, showcase rare finds, and connect with people who share the same passion,” he said.Totonji said the business had grown from small community meet-ups in Doha to cross-border events, including its Riyadh Trade Night, with CardzCon emerging as a platform for the region’s expanding collecting community.The 2026 edition featured more than 70 local, regional and international vendors, and demand led to all ticket categories selling out, according to the organisers.Totonji said collecting in Qatar had shifted from a largely decentralised activity, with enthusiasts buying online or trading in small groups, towards a more community-focused culture.“Collectors today want physical spaces to trade, showcase high-grade items, learn about market values, and meet like-minded people,” he said.Beyond commerce, he believes such gatherings play a central role in sustaining the hobby by creating opportunities for people of different generations to connect.“CardzCon brings that entire ecosystem into the real world,” he said, describing the convention as a welcoming space outside work or school where collectors, creators and vendors can build friendships around a shared interest.The growing market also reflects the relationship between emotional attachment and financial value. While many collectors start by reconnecting with a favourite player, character, or childhood memory, a card's market price can be influenced by rarity, condition, and professional grading.“When you understand card condition, grading, and rarity, your passion becomes a portfolio,” Totonji said.He added that sustainable growth in the collectibles industry depends on trust, verified supply chains, and continued community investment, not sales alone.Qatar Calendar served as the official signature partner, alongside Topps as the official sports trading card partner, Qatar Living as the official media partner, Siin as the official live auction and commerce partner, and Tawasol as the official travel partner.Following the event’s first edition, Art of Cardz plans to make CardzCon an annual convention, bringing collectors and vendors back to Doha as the regional market continues to develop.
