India's Ajinkya Rahane announced his retirement from international cricket on Thursday, bringing the curtain down on a career highlighted by his leadership during a remarkable 2021 Test series victory in Australia.The middle-order batsman played 85 Tests, 90 one-day internationals and 20 Twenty20 matches, but fell out of favour with selectors after a drop in form and last played for India in 2023."I've always relied on timing in my batting, and I've always understood its importance," Rahane, 38, said in a video posted on Instagram."Today, I feel the timing is right for me to move on and announce my retirement from international cricket and all formats."Rahane scored 5,077 runs in Tests, including 12 centuries, and built a reputation as one of India's most reliable batsmen in overseas conditions.More than half of his Test appearances came away from home, where he often thrived against pace and bounce on challenging pitches.The defining chapter of his career came on the four-Test tour of Australia 2020-21 where, as a stand-in, he captained a depleted India to a remarkable 2-1 series triumph.Rahane took the reins when captain Virat Kohli returned home on paternity leave after an opening defeat in Adelaide, where India suffered a humiliating collapse to 36 all out, their lowest Test total.He led India to an eight-wicket victory in the second Test at Melbourne to square the series.A draw in Sydney and a successful fourth-innings chase of 328 at Brisbane's Gabba saw Rahane's India home by three wickets for just their second Test series win on Australia soil."Since the time I made my debut as a first-class cricketer, Indian cricket has grown tremendously, and I feel so proud to have been a part of it over the last 20 years," Rahane said."While my chapter as an Indian cricketer comes to an end, my journey with the game doesn't: I look forward to helping the next generation."The International Cricket Council (ICC) wrote on X: "The curtain falls on an illustrious international career of one of India's most dependable batters."  

Middle-order batter Rahmat Shah has been appointed captain of Afghanistan's Test and one-day international squads, the ⁠country's cricket board announced on Wednesday.The change in ⁠leadership comes after Hashmatullah Shahidi stepped down on Tuesday, ending a five-year stint during which Afghanistan finished sixth at the 2023 World Cup defeating former champions England, Pakistan and Sri ⁠Lanka."The Afghanistan Cricket Board appreciates Hashmatullah Shahidi's valuable service, dedication, and leadership during his tenure as captain and wishes him continued success in his future endeavours," the board said in a statement."With ⁠extensive experience in international ⁠cricket, ⁠leadership, and the team's overall structure, Rahmat Shah is well positioned to take on this important responsibility." The elevation to captaincy is a natural progression for Shah considering he was the vice-captain since May 2021 when Shahidi was announced captain. He is also Afghanistan's leading run-getter in Tests and ODIs.Rahmat, who has served as Shahidi's deputy since 2021, will begin his captaincy with a five-match ODI series in Ireland next month.  

Pakistan on Sunday replaced struggling Test captain Shan Masood with Babar Azam, who will start a third stint as skipper on the tours of the West Indies and England starting later this month.Masood, 36, took over from Azam in December 2023 and led the side to 12 defeats in 16 Tests. Pakistan finished ninth and last in the last World Test Championship cycle.They again lie ninth in the current cycle after a 2-0 series defeat in Bangladesh in May."Azam will be our new Test captain as we feel that Masood could not lead as desired," said Pakistan selector Aaqib Javed at a news conference to announce the squad on Sunday."The selection committee discussed who could be the best player to lead Pakistan and Azam is the best option," said Javed.This will be top-order batsman Azam's third spell in charge of the side, having stepped down in November 2023 and then again in October 2024.Pakistan will play the first of two Tests against the West Indies in Tarouba, Trinidad, from July 25. The second begins in Port-of-Spain from August 2,Pakistan will then travel to England for Tests at Headingley, beginning August 19, Lord's from August 27 and Edgbaston starting on September 9.Fast bowlers Shaheen Shah Afridi and Hasan Ali were omitted after being part of the squad that lost 2-0 in Bangladesh.Selectors awarded a place to 20-year-old uncapped fast bowler Ubaid Shah, the younger brother of Naseem, who was left out of the squad.Khurram Shahzad, Mohammad Abbas and Mohammad Ali were the three other fast bowlers selected.Uncapped middle-order batsman Awais Zafar and left-arm spinner Ali Usman were included for the first time.Pakistan squad: Babar Azam (captain), Aamer Jamal, Abdullah Fazal, Ali Usman, Azan Awais, Imam-ul-Haq, Khurram Shahzad, Mohammad Abbas, Mohammad Ali, Mohammad Rizwan, Awais Zafar, Ghazi Ghori, Sajid Khan, Salman Agha, Shan Masood, Ubaid Shah, Saud Shakeel (subject to fitness for England). 

Captain Mohamed Salah scored after 124 minutes to clinch a 3-1 extra-time victory for Egypt over plucky minnows Benin in an Africa Cup of Nations last-16 thriller in Agadir Monday. Marwan Attia put the Pharaohs ahead in the second half and Jodel Dossou equalised for the Cheetahs, taking the match to an additional 30 minutes in the southern Moroccan coastal city. Yasser Ibrahim headed Egypt back in front in the first half of extra time, then Salah broke clear and beat goalkeeper Marcel Dandjinou with a shot from outside the area for his 10th AFCON goal. Salah, whose goals have helped Liverpool win many trophies, is seeking a first AFCON winners’medal, having twice been a runner-up. Record seven-time champions Egypt stay in Agadir to face title-holders Ivory Coast or Burkina Faso on Saturday in the quarter-finals. Egypt changed 10 of the team that drew with Angola in their final group match seven days ago with only midfielder Ibrahim Adel retained. Many AFCON teams assured of qualification for the knockout stage with a match to spare followed the example of Egypt and fielded sides composed largely of reserves. Benin lacked captain and former Premier League striker Steve Mounie, who had not recovered from an undisclosed illness. Egypt had a great chance to go in front after only eight minutes through Omar Marmoush, the 26-year-old who joined Manchester City at the beginning of last year from Eintracht Frankfurt. He darted forward from the Egyptian half, gained possession and stayed ahead of two pursuing defenders only to be foiled by Dandjinou, who blocked the ball with his legs, then grasped it. When Egypt threatened again soon after, centre-back Yohan Roche rescued Benin, clearing the ball as it was trickling toward the net. A collision between Mohamed Hamdy and Rodolfo Aloko led to a long delay, which ended with the Egyptian being carried off the field. Ahmed Aboul-Fetouh took his place in midfield. While Egypt had more possession in the opening half, Benin held their own and it took a superb sliding tackle from Hamdy Fathy to halt a Benin counterattack. An incident deep in added time illustrated how wary Benin were of Salah. When the captain gained possession just outside the box, he was immediately surrounded by three opponents. Dandjinou rescued Benin 10 minutes into the second half when he bravely parried a close-range shot from Ramy Rabia after the ball ran loose to the defender following a corner. As the match passed the hour mark, it began to open up. A Salah attempt to chip the ball into the net was foiled by leaping Dandjinou. Then, a parry from 37-year-old Egypt goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy prevented substitute Dossou giving Benin a shock lead. Attia ended the goalless stalemate when Marmoush pushed the ball back to the midfielder and, from just outside the box, he side-footed it into the roof of the net. Benin refused to accept defeat, though, attacked constantly and levelled on 83 minutes through 33-year-old Dossou. El Shenawy did superbly to palm a Mohamed Tijani cross away from his goal, but the ball fell invitingly for Dossou, and he pushed it into the net. Egypt regained the lead seven minutes into extra time, and this time Attia was the creator. He crossed after a short corner and a looping Ibrahim header evaded Dandjinou and landed in the net. Salah then put the outcome beyond doubt with his third goal of the tournament.
