Portugal appointed Jorge Jesus as their new national team coach on Friday and he said he would continue to call on veteran superstar Cristiano Ronaldo if he is available, insisting the forward will "never" be a problem.The 41-year-old striker was criticised for his World Cup performances this summer under predecessor Roberto Martinez as Portugal were eliminated in the last 16 by Spain.Ronaldo, who said he has appeared at his last World Cup, has not decided whether he will continue to play for the national team."As long as he's playing and is in a condition to be selected, I will pick him, within certain limits and under the conditions that I consider best for the national team," Jorge told reporters Friday at his presentation.The 71-year-old journeyman coach said he has not spoken to Ronaldo yet but that they would discuss the former Manchester United and Real Madrid star's future in the game."I haven't spoken with Cris yet... Cris is never going to be a problem for the national team. Not for the national team, nor for me," Jorge explained."Cris is a symbol of Portuguese football. Cris is a symbol of the national team... that will forever be in the history books."I had great pleasure working with him this past year... (it's) easy to work with him..."We're going to have a conversation between the two of us about what he wants to do with the future of his career."Jorge coached five-time Ballon d'Or winner Ronaldo at Al Nassr before leaving in May after guiding the club to the Saudi Pro League title."I know (Ronaldo) wants to keep playing at Al Nassr, because, as you know, I spent a year with him," he added."He always told me, 'I'm going to end my career at Al-Nassr'."Jorge will lead Portugal until after the 2030 World Cup, which the country is hosting along with Spain and Morocco. 

Cristiano Ronaldo admitted at the World Cup on Sunday he is not the player he once was but came out fighting against critics "trying to kill me for the past 23 years". The 41-year-old Portugal superstar was in turns bullish, jovial and sentimental on the eve of the last-16 showdown with Spain at the home of the Dallas Cowboys in what will be his last World Cup. One of the finest footballers in history, the former Manchester United, Juventus and Real Madrid superstar refused to say when he will end his international career. But to numerous questions about what lies ahead and the flak that has come his way in recent years, Ronaldo conceded that "I am not the player I used to be". But the attacker and Portugal skipper said "I am not doing too bad", pointing out that he has scored three goals in North America - two against Uzbekistan in a 5-0 thrashing in the group phase and a penalty in the 2-1 win over Croatia in the last 32. Relishing taking on journalists eager to ask about his future and the harsh spotlight on him, he told reporters: "It's been like this since I was 18, it is not going to change. "I always put body and soul trying to get our goals - playing or not playing, I will always have an important role to play. "As I said before, (I will stop) when I choose, not when you choose, you always ask the same question. "I don't want to draw attention to this because it is less important." 'Waste of time' Ronaldo said this was the World Cup he had enjoyed the most, citing the "emotions" of it on and off the pitch. Asked again about his international future, he shot back: "You have been trying to kill me for the past 23 years, but you must have seen that is not worth it, it's a waste of time, but you try and try and try and try and try. "I am so used to this," said the veteran, who is the leading scorer in the history of international football. Ronaldo, who was clapped out of the press conference, added: "I am not going to be more Cristiano Ronaldo or less because I win the World Cup." "Age gives you maturity and experience to see how relative things can be," he said. "I even say thanks for the attacks I feel after I turned 40... the criticism is how you grow, so thank you for doing this." Ronaldo even picked out one reporter because “I know he does not like me” and challenged him to ask a question. “To speak to you, some of you, those who do not like us especially - I remember people’s faces very well,” he said grinning. “Listen, I am going to be honest: whatever happens tomorrow, Cristiano Ronaldo will leave with a clear conscience - not 100 percent but 1,000 percent because in life and football I gave everything.” On the encounter in Texas with Spain, a country he considers a second home after playing for Real Madrid, Ronaldo conceded Portugal were underdogs. “It’s going to be a very hard battle,” he said. “We need a lot of faith, we need to run and we need to be brave.”  

Cristiano Ronaldo scored the first World Cup knockout-stage goal of his career, Goncalo Ramos netted a stoppage-time header and Portugal got a last-second break on an offside call to beat Croatia 2-1 on Thursday and set up a last-16 clash with Spain.Croatia looked to have equalised at the end, leaving Ronaldo crestfallen on the bench, but the last-gasp effort was ruled offside after a video assistant referee review, prompting the team's supporters in the south end of Toronto ⁠Stadium to shower the pitch with debris."It's difficult because it's a game if you don't win, you go home," said Ramos. "But for me, especially, I love those types of moments, I love those types of games, I want to play every game like that, ⁠I want to be in the big moment."It was Josko Gvardiol who thought he had equalised for Croatia in the 103rd minute but a review showed the ball had touched Igor Matanovic on the way through, which made Gvardiol offside."We didn't deserve this sort of finish," said Croatia coach Zlatko Dalic. "It's never easy when you concede a goal in the last minutes of the match but we should have resolved this differently."Ronaldo, 41, became the oldest player to score in the knockout stage of a World Cup when he fired home from the spot to draw Portugal level in the 68th minute of a pulsating game before substitute Ramos rose above the Croatia defenders in the fourth minute of stoppage time.The goal for Ronaldo, who was taken out of the game by coach Roberto Martinez in the 81st minute, was his first in a World Cup knockout game.Ivan Perisic had put Croatia in front when he brought down a pass from Josip Stanisic and coolly fired home at the far post in the 53rd minute as the game opened up considerably with incredible back-and-forth action. PORTUGAL DOMINATE FIRST HALF Portugal dominated possession in the first half but ⁠struggled to convert their chances on a night when a breeze off Lake Ontario offered reprieve from the sweltering heat that blanketed the city for much of the day.Ronaldo, booed heavily by Croatia supporters every time he touched the ball, failed to get his head on an early Pedro Neto cross and then he and Bruno Fernandes were unable to take advantage of a deep cross from Joao Cancelo. Croatia, World Cup runners-up in 2018 and third in 2022, came roaring out of the restart and had Portugal on the back foot as Mateo Kovacic picked up a loose ball and went through the defenders but his shot hit the side of the net not long before they opened the scoring.Nikola Vlasic thought he had Croatia's second but was ruled offside after poking the ball in before Portugal stormed back down the field where Rafael Leao drilled a shot from outside the area that slammed off the crossbar.Ronaldo nearly scored when he coolly flicked the ball over the goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic and into the net but was ruled offside.The Portugal captain finally got his moment in the 68th minute when he fired a penalty straight down the middle of the goal after Renato Veiga was pulled down in the area by Vlasic. EMOTIONAL RONALDO PUTS ON JOTA SHIRT AFTER THE MATCHPortugal took to the pitch ⁠with heavy hearts as the match was played a day before the one-year anniversary of the death of their forward Diogo Jota in a car crash.An image ⁠of Jota in his No. 21 shirt was shown on video boards ⁠at Toronto Stadium after the playing of Portugal's national anthem. Portuguese supporters then gave a standing ovation in honour of Jota in the 21st minute.After the game an emotional Ronaldo put on Jota's red No. 21 shirt while fighting back tears."We won for us, Diogo and Portugal. Let's Go," Ronaldo posted on his official Instagram account.Portugal's Martinez also spoke about Jota. "Several beautiful symbols of power and energy and what Jota meant for the team," the coach said."He was someone who believed, and we have responsibility for Diogo and we are going to keep doing this."The last Toronto-based game of the global showcase was a marquee all-European clash featuring two ageless wonders going head-to-head and it was Ronaldo who kept his hopes for an elusive World Cup alive while Luka Modric was left to ponder his international future.Ronaldo, who shared a moment on the pitch with Modric after the match, said he hopes the man who has featured in each of Croatia's last 23 matches at the World Cup has more football left in him."I spoke with him. He's a legend of football," Ronaldo said of Modric. "Played so many years together with him at Real Madrid. I wish him all the best and I hope he continues to play."Portugal and Croatia have massive diaspora populations in the Greater Toronto Area and thousands of their supporters braved stifling heat as they danced their way to the stadium for the highly anticipated first World Cup meeting between the two nations.By the time the game kicked off, the temperature had dropped considerably from the day's earlier high of 37 degrees Celsius (98.6 degrees Fahrenheit) that convinced officials to cancel a watch party outside Toronto City Hall.Portugal will face Spain on Monday in Dallas with the winner moving on to play Belgium or the United States in the quarter-final.  

Cristiano Ronaldo and Luka Modric will make history when two outfield players aged over 40 face off for the first time in a World Cup as Portugal take on Croatia in Friday's last-32 clash.But both men are facing questions over whether their status as national heroes is now more of a burden than a boost to their countries' hopes of progressing far in the competition.Prior to this tournament, only Cameroon's Roger Milla had played in a World Cup as an outfield player after turning 40.Ronaldo and Modric, who won four Champions Leagues in six seasons together at Real Madrid, have long defied Father Time but have shown their age in what will almost certainly be their final flourish on the global stage.At 41, Ronaldo defiantly screamed "I'm back" after netting twice against Uzbekistan as he became the first player to ever score at six World Cups.Yet either side of a 5-0 romp over a team ranked 60th in the world, Portugal failed to beat the Democratic Republic of Congo and Colombia and fell into a tougher section of the draw as a result."It's already 23 years I've been a professional and whenever things don't go well it's 'Cristiano, he's finished, he's old'," Ronaldo said earlier in the tournament.The forward played every minute of the group stages and outgoing Portugal boss Roberto Martinez shows no sign of taking the bold call to sit the five-time Ballon d'Or winner on the bench."There is not an issue physically or mentally for Cristiano in today's game to play the 90 minutes," Martinez said after Ronaldo managed just two touches in the Colombia box. Protecting Ronaldo's ego After a slow start to the World Cup four years ago, Ronaldo was eventually dropped by Fernando Santos in favour of Goncalo Ramos.The AC Milan striker immediately scored a hat-trick in a 6-1 demolition of Switzerland, but a 1-0 defeat to Morocco in the quarter-finals meant Ronaldo's time out of the side was short-lived and Santos was removed as coach.The impression that Martinez is wasting a richly talented generation just to protect Ronaldo's ego grows with every pedestrian performance.Portugal's depth of midfield talent meant Paris Saint-Germain's Joao Neves and Bernardo Silva, now of Real Madrid, started on the bench against Colombia.Yet even with one of the World Cup's strongest midfields behind him, Ronaldo's strikes against Uzbekistan are his only non-penalty goals in his past 14 games at major tournaments.Modric, 40, similarly showed his age in Croatia's tournament opener, which ended in a 4-2 defeat to England in Dallas.Caught on his heels, Modric conceded a penalty when chopping down Noni Madueke for England's opening goal and was sacrificed by Zlatko Dalic before the hour mark.Croatia bounced back to celebrate Modric's 200th cap, edging past Panama 1-0.In doing so, Modric became the fourth man to reach a double century of international appearances, joining Ronaldo.The AC Milan midfielder then provided the assist for Nikola Vlasic's winner as Croatia beat Ghana 2-1.Finalists in 2018, Croatia also reached the semi-finals four years ago.Modric was the driving force behind those incredible runs for a country of less than four million people.A likely last-16 meeting with Spain and one final shot at glory awaits the winners in Toronto.But for one of football's all-time greats, the World Cup curtain will come down in Canada.
