Aprilia-Trackhouse's Spanish rider Raul Fernandez won the British MotoGP Grand Prix on Sunday, claiming just the second race victory of his career.Championship leader Jorge Martin started on pole but was outpaced from the flag by his 25-year-old compatriot. Martin finished second with Italian Marco Bezzecchi rounding off the podium."I'm happy and this win is special because we got three consecutive podiums and this one was a victory," Fernandez said."Now we want more."After crashing out of contention in the sprint on Saturday, Fernandez said he was "an idiot".But on Sunday, he led all 20 laps of the Silverstone circuit from start to finish after Martin got off to a poor start, possibly due to a mechanical problem following a shower of sparks from the rear.Fernandez is the 12th different winner at Silverstone in 12 Grand Prix races on the legendary course, which also hosts Formula One Grands Prix.It was nonetheless a fine weekend for 2024 world champion and Silverstone sprint winner Martin as he grew his lead in the overall standings to 31 points."This result gave us a big, big boost for our motivation," Martin said."Today I wanted that victory so badly. I was really focussed, but I did a small mistake in the first corner and I lost a lot of places."Japan's Ai Ogura, who had started second on the grid and was sitting second overall, slid off midway through the race and now trails Martin by 37 points.Instead Martin's Aprilia teammate Bezzecchi is now his principal challenger for the title following a heroic weekend after he had spent the summer break recovering from a collarbone fracture suffered in qualifying at the Germany MotoGP last month.Spain's Alex Marquez of Ducati-Gresini finished fourth, ahead of KTM's Spaniard Pedro Acosta and Italy's Fabio Di Giannantonio of Ducati satellite team VR46.Reigning world champion Marc Marquez of Spain, on his factory Ducati, finished only seventh. 

Jorge Martin led from start to finish to win ‌the British Grand Prix sprint at Silverstone on Saturday, extending his MotoGP ​championship lead as the Italian ‌manufacturer locked out the podium in dominant fashion.The Spaniard converted pole ‌position into a ⁠commanding 10-lap sprint win, ‌with Trackhouse rider Ai Ogura finishing ‌second and Martin's team mate Marco Bezzecchi completing an all-Aprilia podium in third.Martin's victory moved ⁠him to 220 points in the championship standings, opening up a 17-point gap over second-placed Ogura while Bezzecchi leapfrogged Marc Marquez to move up to third, 27 points behind.Marquez's title aspirations suffered a significant blow as the Ducati rider slumped from sixth on the grid to ninth at the chequered flag after suffering from tyre wear. He now sits 29 points behind Martin ahead of Sunday's race."A lot ​of work during summer, finally, all the work we did was worth it. So I'm really, really happy. Today, what can I say? Incredible job," Martin said.The polesitter, who smashed the lap ‌record in qualifying, made a perfect ⁠getaway but had ​to manage his resources carefully as tyre degradation became a significant factor."I ​tried to be as fast as possible, trying to manage. At the end, I had no rear tyre (grip)," he added. "So I thought Ai would catch me, but I was able to manage the distance and another sprint victory is always amazing."Ducati riders had won the last three sprints at Silverstone but the best they could manage was Gresini Racing's Alex Marquez finishing fourth, while VR46 Racing rider Fabio Di Giannantonio was fifth.While Martin controlled proceedings at the front, the drama unfolded behind as Marquez made contact with Bezzecchi at the start before recovering to ‌move up to fourth. MARQUEZ SUFFERS WITH ‌GRIPHowever, the Aprilias' superior corner ⁠speed soon proved decisive, with Bezzecchi overtaking the reigning champion on lap five and pulling ⁠clear.Marquez's afternoon went from bad to ⁠worse as tyre wear hampered his pace, allowing his brother Alex to move past him before KTM's Pedro Acosta, Joan Mir and Franco Morbidelli also found their way through.The reigning world champion barely held on to ninth place as Diogo Moreira closed in during the final moments, with Ducati mechanics immediately examining his rear tyre upon his return to ​the pits.But the day belonged to Aprilia and, while Martin was elated, an emotional Bezzecchi was in tears after securing a podium on his return from collarbone surgery, with the Italian still not fully fit and riding through pain."It was a tough period, as you probably can imagine. So it was very important to come back and enjoy on the bike. We did a very good job," Bezzecchi said."It's difficult for me to say what I'm feeling right now. But I want to say just a ‌massive thanks to all ​the team and all the people that stayed close to me. They worked hard with me."

Charles Leclerc beamed with pleasure and relief on Sunday after his long-awaited first win since 2024 - and Ferrari's 250th - in an extraordinary British Grand Prix reignited the F1 championship.As the race ended with a five-lap procession behind the Safety Car, a decision that cost seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton second and Ferrari a likely first 1-2 finish at Silverstone since 2002, the Monegasque cruised to his ninth career win."After all the work we put in to try and get feeling back into the car. I found something yesterday and confirmed it today and the feeling is back," said the winner.The late safety car was deployed after four-time champion Max Verstappen crashed out in his Red Bull while championship leader Kimi Antonelli suffered a broken wheel shield on his Mercedes.Ferrari had been running first and second before they pitted both cars under the late safety car - a move that saw Leclerc stay in the lead, but which cost Hamilton second as Mercedes' George Russell stayed out and took second place. HAMILTON'S PERSONAL DISAPPOINTMENTHamilton shrugged off his personal disappointment after claiming a record 16th Silverstone podium and praised Leclerc and Ferrari despite criticism and heated debate about the stewards' decision to conclude the race without a final lap of racing."Congratulations to Charles - winning this Grand Prix is a special experience and this is a great result for our team. I just didn't have it today - all the magic that I had on Friday disappeared over the weekend."I went through a yellow flag and I didn't see it and I jumped the start... When it rains it pours!He added that he felt Ferrari were capable of closing in on Mercedes in the title race."I am not sure what happened to Kimi (Antonelli), but our team is doing a phenomenal job. We have some work still to do to close the gap in pure performance, but these results - two wins now this year - is just fantastic."Championship leader Antonelli made a poor start from his fifth pole, but fought back and looked set to challenge to win before his race was wrecked by car problems in the closing laps.He finished 16th and pointless, but remains on top of the drivers' title race with 179 points - thanks to his record run of five straight wins earlier in the year - ahead of Mercedes team-mate George Russell, who finished second, on 154 and Hamilton on 147.In the constructors' championship, Mercedes have 333 points after seven wins ahead of Ferrari on 255. 

* First pole of any kind for Hamilton this season* Ferrari driver 0.011 quicker than F1 leader Antonelli* Russell only fifth on the sprint grid    Lewis Hamilton continued his long love affair with Silverstone by ‌seizing pole position for Saturday's British Grand Prix sprint race as his home crowd ​hailed their Ferrari hero's achievement.The seven-times ‌world champion was fastest in sole practice and all three phases of Friday's qualifying ‌session, finishing the ⁠day with a best lap ‌of one minute 28.376 seconds on a ‌sunny afternoon at Silverstone.Mercedes's Formula One leader Kimi Antonelli was 0.011 slower than Hamilton, who has won a ⁠record nine British Grands Prix since his 2007 debut with McLaren."I love this place and I love this crowd. I can’t express to you how big a dream it is," said Hamilton after stepping out of his car and saluting the adoring crowd."The car has felt great today... I’m really grateful to get that pole. I was quick through all the sessions but still, it was only 11 milliseconds, so it was very close to these guys."WORLD CHAMPION NORRIS TO LINE UP ​SIXTHRed Bull's Max Verstappen qualified third with Ferrari's Charles Leclerc fourth and George Russell, Antonelli's teammate and closest rival, fifth. McLaren's world champion Lando Norris, last year's winner, starts sixth after battling brake duct damage.Antonelli is 40 points ‌clear of Russell after eight rounds and ⁠the 19-year-old Italian could ​extend that on Saturday, with eight points going to the winner of the 100-km ​race.The pole was Hamilton's first of any sort this season and first also since a sprint qualifying in China last year.The 41-year-old great, who took his first grand prix win for Ferrari in Spain last month, has yet to take a regular pole since July 2023 when he was at Mercedes.Throughout the session Hamilton made the difference, the Briton pushing himself to another level as has been the case so often in the past at a circuit where he has lived some of the great afternoons of his career."We are ahead of Mercedes and Red Bull and these guys have so much power," he said. "They have been doing amazing all year but my ‌team just won't let up and they ‌keep pushing and that is what I ⁠am so proud of."We didn't expect we would be coming to Silverstone and competing for the front ⁠row. We really, really didn't. But this ⁠is an amazing surprise and I am ecstatic."ANOTHER SETBACK FOR RUSSELLAs Hamilton celebrated, Russell added another setback to a lengthening list and pondered Ferrari's speed."I am very surprised (by Ferrari)," said the Briton, winner of two of three previous sprints this year. "They've been on the back foot with the PU (power unit) and energy management and here they look the best at the moment."We've always known they have a great chassis but I think ​some things aren't quite making sense... obviously Kimi did a great job but Ferrari have had the upper hand all day."McLaren's Oscar Piastri qualified seventh with Red Bull's Isack Hadjar eighth and Racing Bulls pair Liam Lawson and British rookie Arvid Lindblad completing the top 10.Hamilton and Leclerc were one-two after the first phase but Antonelli found some speed in the second to split the two Ferraris, with Norris right on the cusp in 10th place and in danger of going out."There was a little bit left on the table but it was a decent lap, and unfortunately super close to Lewis," said Antonelli ‌of the final phase. "But ​congrats to him, and on our side we’ll focus on tomorrow now."All the sprints so far this year have been won from pole.
