Liverpool beat Brighton & Hove Albion 2-0 on Sunday to grab their first home win of the Premier League season while Manchester United slumped to an embarrassing 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth that will heap further pressure on under-fire manager Michael Carrick, who benched captain Bruno Fernandes.The Portuguese playmaker was left out of the starting team after criticising Carrick's tactics in a 4-1 Champions League defeat to Italian side Como in midweek.Any hope that the move might inspire the rest of the side evaporated when Rayan scored for the Cherries in the 38th minute, with Marcus Tavernier adding a second goal before the break.Evanilson's superb third saw a trickle of fans head for the exits, and that trickle became a flood as the end approached with Fernandes still on the bench and very little sign that United would be capable of mounting any sort of a comeback.With the final whistle greeted by a loud chorus of boos, the defeat left Carrick's side in 16th place on seven points, one above the relegation zone, and they are without a win in the league since beating Ipswich Town 5-2 on August 30. WHAT NEXT FOR CARRICK? The only consolation for the beleaguered coach came from the fans who remained to cheer him as he left the pitch before booing the players who had again failed to deliver on the field."It wasn't a farewell from me. I'm mixed emotions, I'm feeling it for my players, they're going through a tough spell. Some of it we can help, some of it, the situation unravels and the boys are feeling it at the moment," he told Sky Sports before admitting that his future was uncertain."It's a tough situation, there's no hiding from it. What it looks like and what's next I really don't know. I will always do my best for the football club and I won't change that now. I love what I do and I feel the responsibility. We'll have to wait and see."Stand-in captain Harry Maguire said that the United players needed to take a long, hard look in the mirror."That's the most important thing - think what you can do more and what more you can contribute to the team, and if we do that we'll get somewhere," he told Sky Sports."This is a huge club and every day you have to prove why you're wearing this badge. At the moment, we're not doing enough as players. Michael turned our season on its head last year, and we played brilliant football and got brilliant results - this season, we haven't performed well enough as individuals." SEAGULLS GROUNDED BY LIVERPOOL Liverpool enjoyed a much more positive afternoon as they welcomed high-flying Brighton to Anfield, netting twice in a high-energy first half to bring an excellent run of four league wins on the trot for the Seagulls to a shuddering halt.Brighton defender Pascal Gross steered a Florian Wirtz shot into his own net in the 17th minute, and Alexander Isak scored the second with a deftly taken first-time finish from Bradley Barcola's pass four minutes later to secure the win."I think today the performance was really good, really solid, against a really good team," Isak said after netting for the third league game in a row."The first half is really what we want to be about - intensity and winning balls and encountering. So yeah, I'm really happy, especially with the first half."The win lifts Liverpool to fourth in the table on 15 points, one behind Brighton. Manchester City remain top of the standings on 21 points despite dropping their first points of the season on Saturday in a 2-1 reverse against Aston Villa, with Arsenal in second place on goal difference.Newcastle United got back to winning ways with a 2-0 win away to Crystal Palace, while Hull City were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Brentford.

Mikel Arteta slammed Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler's claim that Arsenal "make their own rules" after the Premier League leaders moved a step closer to the title with a 1-0 win at the Amex Stadium on Wednesday.Bukayo Saka's deflected strike early in the first half sealed Arsenal's third successive victory. The Gunners are seven points clear of second-placed Manchester City, who were held to a surprise 2-2 draw by lowly Nottingham Forest.Arteta have complete control of the title race as they chase a first English crown since 2004 after three consecutive runners-up finishes. But if Arsenal do go on to claim the title it is highly unlikely they will be held in the same regard as Arsene Wenger's squad 22 years ago.In contrast to the eye-catching style of the 'Invincibles', there is little to love about Arteta's prosaic team, who have thrived thanks to their set-piece excellence and a supremely well-drilled defence. Criticism of Arsenal's 'ugly' tactics is growing and Hurzeler was the latest to join the chorus as he accused the Gunners of time-wasting and faking injuries.Hurzeler was frustrated by Arsenal's habit of delaying the restart of the game at free-kicks. Gunners keeper David Raya also went down injured on three separate occasions and required treatment, sparking suggestions he was faking to allow time for tactical discussions between Arteta and his players."I think there was only one team that tried to play football today. Did you see in a Premier League game a goalkeeper going down that many times? No?" Hurzeler said. "They (Arsenal) make their own rules. At the moment I have the feeling they are doing their own rules. I will never be the kind of manager who tries to win in that way. If I ask everyone in the room, did he really enjoy this game? I'm sure maybe one raises his arm because he's a big Arsenal fan. Where will this go in the future? Is this what the supporters are paying for?"Yet Arteta was unrepentant about Arsenal's game plan, insisting his players deserved praise for grinding out another vital victory. "What a surprise," he said when informed of Hurzeler's claims. "If you go back through previous games you will find a lot of comments like this, always. I love my players. That's the highlight. I love my players and I love the way we compete. When you're in the position we are in, obviously the opposition want to take that away from you. That's normal, that is sport."Arsenal aren't earning many style points, but Arteta doesn't care as they remain in contention for the quadruple. As well as leading the Premier League, the Gunners face Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League last 16, meet Manchester City in the League Cup final and visit Mansfield in the FA Cup fifth round.Asked whether he cared what other managers thought of him, Arteta replied: "No comment." 

Manchester United crashed out of the FA Cup with a meek 2-1 home defeat to Brighton Sunday as Gabriel Martinelli’s hat-trick fired Arsenal to a 4-1 win at Portsmouth to reach round four. United interim boss Darren Fletcher could only watch on in horror as the Red Devils’ last chance of silverware this season and likely his chances of landing the job until the end of the season went up in smoke at Old Trafford. Fletcher’s men were left to rue not making more of a positive start before Brajan Gruda fired the visitors in front on 12 minutes from Danny Welbeck’s cross. The roles were reversed midway through the second half as Welbeck lashed into the top corner against his former club. There were persistent chants targeting United co-owners the Glazer family and British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe as the discontent at Old Trafford grew. And any hope those in charge of the club had for a bounce following the removal of Ruben Amorim has proved very short-lived. Benjamin Sesko’s late header set up a grandstand finish, but it proved too little, too late for Fletcher. A red card for teenager Shea Lacey in stoppage time for dissent rounded off United’s miserable afternoon. Martinelli shrugged off the backlash to his clash with stricken Liverpool defender Conor Bradley as Arsenal reached the fourth round for the first time in three years. Championship side Portsmouth were dreaming of an upset against the Premier League leaders when they went in front after just three minutes through Colby Bishop. Mikel Arteta had made 10 changes from the side that drew 0-0 with Liverpool on Thursday. Martinelli drew stinging criticism for trying to push Bradley off the pitch in the closing stages after the Northern Irishman hit the ground with a serious knee injury. Liverpool confirmed the right-back will need surgery and will miss the rest of the season. The Brazilian apologised to Bradley after the game and did not seem affected by the furore at Fratton Park. “That’s personality, come in and talk on the pitch,” said Arteta. “To play for a big club you need a big personality because it can be that (being at the centre of a controversial incident), it can be an action that you miss, it can be something that costs you a game, and three days later there is a game, so you need to lift yourself up and make it count.” Arsenal could rely on their threat from set-pieces to turn the tie around. The Pompey lead lasted only five minutes as Andre Dozzell turned into his own net under pressure from Christian Norgaard. Martinelli then flicked in the first of his three goals before Noni Madueke missed the chance to make it 3-1 from the penalty spot when the England international fired wide. Gabriel Jesus teed up Martinelli to kill the tie off early in the second period before he completed his hat-trick from another Arsenal corner. West Ham eased the mounting pressure on Nuno Espirito Santo as new signing Taty Castellanos scored his first goal for the club to beat QPR 2-1 after extra-time. Castellanos has been signed to dig them out of trouble at the bottom of the Premier League and the £26mn arrival from Lazio bulleted home a header from Crysencio Summerville’s cross to secure a much-needed win. Leeds needed a second-half fightback to beat Derby County 3-1 and book their place in the fourth round. League One Mansfield held off Sheffield United to book their place in round four with a 4-3 win at Bramall Lane. Norwich, Hull and West Brom also progressed to the last 32.
