Vuelta debutant Brennan claims fifth victory on stage 17

Sprint king Matthew Brennan claimed a fifth Vuelta a Espana stage victory on Wednesday as he edged a bunch sprint in Seville to win the 17th stage.The 21-year-old Grand Tour debutant crossed the finish line ahead of Jordi Meeus and Magnus Cort Nielsen.General classification leader Enric Mas moved one step closer to claiming a first Grand Tour victory as he maintained his 2min 6sec lead on Felix Gall, with four-time Vuelta winner Primoz Roglic a further four seconds behind.The stage was set up for the bunch sprint finale, without a single climb on the long, flat, 185 kilometre ride from Dos Hermanas to the Andalusian capital.Sinuhe Fernandez and Enzo Paleni formed a two-man break early on, whipping up a gap of more than four minutes on the peloton, who were moving at a leisurely pace on another hot day with temperatures over 30C.The gap extended to over five minutes around the halfway point, with Visma then working hard to reduce it.Groupama FDJ-United rider Paleni dropped Fernandez but was absorbed by the peloton with just three kilometres remaining after a monumental effort.Young star Brennan came around Danish rider Cort to claim the sprint victory, holding off Belgium's Meeus who crossed the line second.As with his other stage victories, the Briton raised his hand to the air, this time with all of his fingers up to represent his five victories.Brennan's victory puts him in a small bracket of riders, including Tadej Pogacar -- who was overwhelming favourite to win this year's Vuelta before he suffered a season-ending injury in a crash in stage eight -- to claim five or more stages at a single Grand Tour.On Thursday, riders take on a 32.1km individual time-trial from El Puerto de Santa Maria to Jerez de la Frontera in stage 18, which is one of the last chances for Mas's general classification contenders to cut down the gap on the Spaniard.

Brennan takes Vuelta stage 16 for fourth win

Matthew Brennan sprinted to victory in the 16th stage of the Vuelta a Espana on Tuesday to claim his fourth stage win of the race.Visma Lease-a-bike's British rider Brennan, given a superb lead-out by team-mate Wout Van Aert, crossed the line ahead of Bryan Coquard and Vito Braet in Palos de la Frontera, in the south-west of Spain.Team Movistar's Spanish rider Enric Mas maintained his 2min 6sec general classification lead on Felix Gall, with Primoz Roglic a further four seconds behind.Brennan, 21, held up four fingers to celebrate each of his four stage wins in his maiden Grand Tour."It's unbelievable, four victories here and the plan was for one," said Brennan.Tuesday's 16th stage, running 181.1km from Cortegana, was expected to be another chance for the sprinters and so it proved, on another hot late summer day.A five-man breakaway got up the road early on but with 100km remaining the peloton started to reel them in.The break was caught with around 23km remaining, setting up the bunch sprint finale.Van Aert lead out for Brennan, who cruised to a comfortable victory, with nobody coming close to finding a way past him.Belgian rider Van Aert has won two stages himself, bringing Visma's total to six in this edition of the Vuelta.On Wednesday a flat stage 17 takes riders 185 kilometres from Dos Hermanas to Seville, offering another sprint finale.

Briton Brennan triumphs in Vuelta stage 11, Mas retains red

Briton Matthew Brennan prevailed in a chaotic sprint for the finish line in stage 11 of the Vuelta a Espana on Wednesday, as the 21-year-old Visma-Lease a Bike rider claimed his third stage win in his maiden Grand Tour.Brennan, who also won the second and fourth stages, beat Bryan Coquard (Cofidis) and Jordi Meeus (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) in a photo finish in Lorca.Red jersey holder Enric Mas (Movistar) retained his overall lead, remaining a minute and 18 seconds ahead of four-times winner Primoz Roglic (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) as nearly the entire peloton crossed the finish line together after the 153.8-km ride from Cartagena.Points classification leader Wout van Aert expertly led teammate Brennan to the front after the final turn and he overtook Coquard and crossed the finish line with his hand raised in victory."We took the initiative again today... it was fantastic work in the last 10 km to keep us in the right place," said Brennan, who won Britain's National Under-23 Championships last year. 'A TEAM FULL OF MASSIVE CHAMPIONS'"I'm with a team full of massive champions... I'm thankful that they go full gas for me."UAE Team Emirates-XRG, whose leader Tadej Pogacar withdrew from the race after a crash in stage eight, could have lost another rider when Kevin Vermaerke went down in a crash with Hamish McKenzie (Jayco AlUla).American Vermaerke got back up, however, and carried on as the peloton shut down all the early attacks, reaching speeds of nearly 46 km per hour going into the last 10 kilometres of the mostly flat stage.The peloton was together amid a frantic battle to stay ahead in the final kilometre, but the Visma-Lease a Bike riders successfully collaborated to set up Brennan's dash to the finish line.The race returns to the mountains on Thursday with a 166.6-km ride from Vera to Calar Alto.

Brennan captures Wyndham crown for second PGA win

Michael Brennan fired a six-under par 64 to win the Wyndham Championship on Sunday, taking his second PGA Tour title in the final regular-season event before the FedEx Cup playoffs.The 24-year-old American closed with a 13-foot birdie putt at the 18th hole to finish on 22-under 258 and defeat compatriot Beau Hossler by three strokes.Brennan, whose other PGA title came last October at the Bank of Utah Championship on a sponsor's exemption, took home $1.53 million from the $8.5 million purse on offer at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina.Brennan reeled off five birdies in a row Sunday to seize command, a run that began with an eight-foot birdie putt at the fourth hole and included a birdie at the par-three seventh where he missed an ace by six inches.He made bogey at 11 after a tee shot into the right rough but sank a testy five-foot par putt at the par-three 12th and answered with an eight-foot birdie putt at 13."I did it great for nine holes," Brennan said. "I felt really good on the front nine, just playing my game. I was really staying within myself, hitting good shots. I felt like I was really in control."Got a little nervous around 10, 11. I made a nice par putt on 12 and that steadied me a little bit going through and just glad to make a few putts coming in."Hossler birdied 16 and 17 to pull within two shots on the final tee, setting the stage for Brennan's clinching birdie.Brennan began the week 105th in the season points rankings with only the top 70 after this week advancing to the playoffs. The victory lifted Brennan to 47th in the points and a berth in the postseason showdown."I don't want to be done playing golf," Brennan said. "I feel like I played the best golf I have all year the last couple weeks. This is my sixth week in a row. Seven is a lot but I think I'm going to be perfectly happy running on fumes next week."The playoff field will be trimmed from 70 to 50 players after next week's event in Memphis.Hossler shot 67 to take second by one stroke over fellow American Ben James, who had a closing 61. Hossler jumped 50 places in the points race but missed out on the playoffs, finishing 72nd."Disappointed but very proud of how I fought on the back nine, particularly at the end," Hossler said. "Stings a little bit but very proud of my commitment. Pretty valiant effort."Jackson Koivun, a 21-year-old American who turned professional last month and won the 3M Open two weeks ago, started and finished the week 70th on the list to capture the final playoff spot.Brennan was the only golfer who began the week out of the playoffs and charged into the postseason at the last event.

Brennan surges into co-lead entering final round of Wyndham

Michael Brennan moved into an ideal spot Saturday in the Wyndham Championship. He's the co-leader with Beau Hossler, who was just happy to finally finish the third round.Brennan posted five birdies across the final eight holes to shoot 7-under-par 63 on Saturday and move into a share of the lead with Hossler through three rounds in Greensboro, N.C."That's the spot you want to be, you want to be in the last group coming down the stretch on Sunday," Brennan said. "I'm glad I put myself into that position."The duo is level at 16-under 194 for a one-shot edge entering Sunday's final round.Hossler, who was the second-round leader, completed his round of 66 following two late-round weather-related pauses at Sedgefield Country Club."It was incredibly chaotic," Hossler said. "I got off to a really poor start as far as my ball-striking. Really settled in nicely, and then I think clearly the delays ruined the momentum a bit. ... just glad to make it through."Brennan's lone bogey came on the second hole before he got rolling.Hossler's best finish this year was a tie for third place at the Myrtle Beach Classic in May. Still seeking his first career win on tour, he has twice been runner-up when losing in playoffs and finished second four total times.Brennan's only PGA Tour victory came in last year's Bank of Utah Championship.South Korea's Tom Kim also shot 63 and sits at 15 under in third place.Alex Smalley (65) and Sweden's Alex Noren (65) are at 14 under, while Davis Thompson (65) is in sixth place at 13 under.Colombia's Nico Echavarria's 62 marked the best score of the round, allowing him to move to 11 under and climb into a tie for eighth place. A day earlier, he was one stroke away from missing the cut. On Saturday, his eagle on the par-5 fifth hole got him rolling in a bogey-free round."There was enough wind where it was shifting, but I'm very happy the putter got hot and hit some quality shots," Echavarria said. "So everything was clicking."This is the final tournament in the PGA Tour's regular season. Golfers need to be in the top 70 of the season's standings to advance to next week's FedEx Cup playoffs."It's really hard to stay in the present," Brennan said. "It's easy to kind of think about the consequences of where you finish the tournament."Because he'll have a later final-round tee time than he anticipated, the surge up the leaderboard caused Echavarria to change his flight plans for Sunday night in advance of next week's FedEx Cup playoff opener in Memphis.Hossler began the round with a one-stroke lead. Nineteen golfers were within four strokes of him. Several golfers rose past Hossler on the leaderboard before he began his round.Hossler notched five birdies during a 10-hole stretch before the momentum was halted because of a lightning delay. He was bogey-free through 15 holes before storms caused the day's first suspension of play. He bogeyed the 16th hole upon the resumption of play.There was another suspension prior to Hossler playing No. 18, with his tee shot going into the rough off the right side of the fairway. But he recovered for par with a 4-foot putt to maintain a share of the lead."Certainly probably wasn't exactly the ideal situation," Hossler said. "But with that being said, you've kind of got to deal with the cards you've dealt and hopefully make the best of it."Jordan Smith had a highlight even though he shot even-par 70 and remained at 11 under. He notched a hole-in-one on the 16th hole."A hole-in-one always helps if you have one of them in a round," Smith said. "It was like a perfect 9-iron for us, and obviously it came out perfectly."Brooks Koepka, who needs a strong finishing spot this weekend to move into the top 70, slumped with a 74 on Saturday and slid to 3 over in the tournament.Defending champion Cameron Young, who made the cut on the number, shot 72 and is at 1 under for the tournament.
