US President Donald Trump headed home from Davos Thursday after unveiling his new Board of Peace and once again casting himself as a global peacemaker, despite widespread scepticism over a plan that aims to rewrite the world order.Trump officials also unveiled ambitious plans for a "New Gaza" during the ceremony at the World Economic Forum, with the US leader describing the devastated Palestinian territory as "great real estate".Trump later met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, with both leaders describing their talks as good and the US leader saying Russia's nearly four-year-old war with Kyiv "has to end".But despite announcing "trilateral" talks between Washington, Moscow and Kyiv in the coming days and agreement with Trump on post-war US security guarantees for Ukraine, Zelensky hit out at European allies for being too slow to counter Russian leader Vladimir Putin."What's missing: time or political will?" he said.Trump's Board of Peace was created after Trump expressed frustration at failing to win the Nobel Peace Prize and ramped up accusations the United Nations had failed to resolve a host of international conflicts."Well this is exciting," Trump said as he was joined on stage by leaders and officials from 19 countries to sign the board's founding charter in the Swiss ski resort."This board has the chance to be one of the most consequential bodies ever created," he said.The Board of Peace, of which Trump is the chairman, was initially designed to oversee the Gaza truce and the reconstruction of the strip after the war between Hamas and Israel.But its purpose has since morphed into resolving all sorts of international conflicts, sparking concerns that the US president wants to create a rival to the UN.Key US allies including France and Britain have expressed doubts.Countries have been asked to pay $1bn for permanent membership of the board, and the invitation for Putin, whose country invaded Ukraine in 2022, has sparked controversy. Gaza 'master plan'Trump told the gathering of the global elite in the Swiss mountain resorts that the organisation would work "in conjunction" with the United Nations.A large part of the ceremony was devoted to talking about its plans for shattered Gaza.Gaza's newly appointed administrator said in a video message that the Rafah border crossing between Egypt and the Gaza Strip will reopen in both directions next week.Then Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner, like the president a former property developer, showed slides of what he billed as a "master plan" for Gaza's reconstruction.They included maps of new settlements and artist renderings of gleaming seafront hotels and apartments under the caption "New Gaza"."It could be a hope. It could be a destination," Kushner said.Trump told Hamas to disarm under the next phase of the Gaza ceasefire accord or it would be the "end of them". He added that he was ready to "talk" with Iran.'Not so popular'The representatives of the 19 countries on stage with Trump included two close populist allies, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and Argentine President Javier Milei, and officials from a host of Middle Eastern countries.Trump said he expected around 50 countries to join, but the full extent of the board's membership remains unclear.Trump said Putin had also agreed to join, though the Russian leader said he was still studying the invitation.Zelensky has also been invited, but has said that he could not envisage working alongside arch-foe Putin.Trump said he was hopeful of a deal soon to end Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and Zelensky told the WEF that documents being drafted with Washington to end the war were "nearly, nearly ready".Zelensky said his meeting with Trump was "positive" but conceded that dialogue with the US president was "not simple"."It's all about the eastern part of our country. It's all about the land. This is the issue which we (have) not solved yet," he added.The Ukrainian leader has voiced fears that Trump's push to seize Greenland - which dominated Davos on Wednesday - could divert focus away from Russia's invasion.Tensions over Greenland eased, however, after Trump announced a "framework of a future deal" over the Danish territory and dropped his threat to hit European allies with new tariffs.Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said the Arctic island wanted a "peaceful dialogue" with Washington and it wanted to remain part of Denmark for now. 

His Excellency Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani signed Thursday a document regarding Qatar's joining of the Board of Peace, during the signing ceremony of the charter establishing the council in Davos, Swizeralnd, in the presence of US President Donald Trump, along with a number of leaders and representatives of member states.The PM and the foreign ministers of seven Arab and Islamic countries welcomed the invitation extended by Trump to the leaders of their countries to join the Board of Peace, and affirmed their countries' commitment to supporting the implementation of the council's mission as a transitional body, as outlined in the comprehensive plan to end the conflict in Gaza and as adopted by UN Security Council Resolution 2803.

The foreign ministers of Qatar, Turkiye, Egypt, Jordan, Indonesia, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and the UAE have welcomed the invitation extended to their leaders by US President Donald Trump to join the Board of Peace. The ministers announced their countries’ shared decision to join the Board of Peace. Each country will sign the joining documents according to their respective relevant legal and other necessary procedures, including Egypt, Pakistan, and the UAE, who have already announced to join. The ministers reiterated their countries’ support for the peace efforts led by President Trump, and reaffirm their countries’ commitment to support the implementation of the mission of the Board of Peace as a transitional administration, as set out in the Comprehensive Plan to End the Gaza Conflict and endorsed by United Nations Security Council Resolution 2803. The resolution is aimed at consolidating a permanent ceasefire, supporting the reconstruction of Gaza, and advancing a just and lasting peace grounded in the Palestinian right to self-determination and statehood in accordance with international law, thereby paving the way for security and stability for all countries and peoples of the region.

The White House announced some of the members of what it refers to as the Board of Peace, which, under President Donald Trump’s plan, will oversee the temporary administration of the Gaza Strip.In a statement, the White House said the names include Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff, former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, Private Equity billionaire Marc Rowan, President of the World Bank Group Ajay Banga, and Trump adviser Robert Gabriel. Former United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Nikolay Mladenov will assume the role of High Representative for Gaza, noting that additional members will be announced in the coming weeks.Trump’s plan, unveiled late last year, which calls for the establishment of a Palestinian technocratic authority under the supervision of what it termed an international Board of Peace to oversee the administration of Gaza during a transitional period, indicates that the US president himself would chair the council.The statement did not specify the responsibilities of each member, but it did include the appointment of Major General Jasper Jeffers, the former commander of US special operations, as commander of the international stabilization force in the territory.
