End of an era as Messi prepares to hang up Argentina boots

Lionel Messi will pull on Argentina's sky blue-and-white jersey for the last time on Tuesday and enjoy an emotional farewell in front of his adoring fans in a stadium with a name to match his legacy: Monumental.Some 85,000 spectators will be present to watch the 39-year-old idol perform his wizardry in a friendly against Benin that brings down the curtain on his 21-year international career.Millions more will follow the action in South America's largest stadium, Buenos Aires' Estadio Monumental, on TV.The most-capped player in Argentine history is hanging up his boots two-and-a-half months after losing the World Cup final to Spain."I gave it my all; I have nothing left to give, and besides, there are great young players coming up who deserve their chance," Messi wrote when announcing his international retirement in August.On Monday, he took part in his last training session with the team at the complex that bears his name in the Buenos Aires suburb of Ezeiza.Fans gathered to watch there too."I believe Messi gave everything, absolutely everything, so it doesn't bother me at all that he's leaving. He has more than earned it, let him enjoy himself, let him rest," Cecilia Adriano, 52, told AFP.Before the match, the University of Buenos Aires will award Messi an honorary doctorate.Messi remains under contract with Inter Miami until 2028, although following the death of his father, Jorge, two months ago, he revealed he may hang up his boots for good sooner than anticipated.FILLING THE VOIDNo effort has been spared for the sendoff of a player considered one of the game's greatest ever.Several of the teammates with whom he won the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, and who will form the backbone of the post-Messi team, will play in the game, including defender Cristian Romero, midfielders Alexis Mac Allister and Enzo Fernandez and forwards Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez.After the game the captain's armband will pass to Romero.Coach Lionel Scaloni has vowed to try to fill the "void" left by his talismanic captain and the signs from the next generation, some of whom weren't even alive when Messi debuted with the team in 2005, are promising.In their first games since the World Cup final last week, minus Messi, Argentina thrashed Bolivia 4-0 in a friendly in Cordoba on Wednesday before running rings around Burkina Faso on Saturday at Monumental stadium.Franco Mastantuono and Gianluca Prestianni, two of Argentina's brightest new hopes, both scored their first international goals in the 7-0 romp against Burkina Faso.The results have begun the process of lifting the gloom of the defeat in the World Cup final when Argentina and a visibly tired Messi were outplayed by Spain in New Jersey.Several of Messi's teammates resorted to thuggish tactics which were punished with bans and fines.RIGHTFUL HEIR TO MARADONAMessi is not only Argentina's most capped player but also its leading scorer with 125 goals in 207 games, as well as a record 68 assists."La Pulga" (The Flea) won the eternal gratitude of Argentines -- and sealed his place as the rightful heir to Diego Maradona -- in 2022 when he ended their 36-year World Cup drought in Qatar.During his time with the Albiceleste, Argentina were also crowned 2005 world youth champions, 2008 Olympic champions and they won the Copa America in 2021 and 2024. They also won the 2022 Finalissima, a match between the champions of South America and Europe.But there were tears along the way too, notably after Argentina's defeat by Germany in the 2014 World Cup final in Brazil, their 1-0 loss to Spain in this year's final and their shock defeat on penalties to Chile in the 2016 Copa America final.One detail remains unclear, however: who will inherit Messi's coveted number 10 jersey?"Until Leo's game, we won't give the number 10 to anyone," said Scaloni. "After that, we'll see."

Lionel Messi, an eight-time Ballon d'Or winner, announced his international retirement at the end of August at the age of 39.

Argentina coach says Messi deserves to go out on own terms

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni said on Thursday that next month's friendly against Benin in Buenos Aires will give Lionel Messi the chance "to say goodbye the way he wants to"."It will be hard not to cry that day, it's a privilege to be there," said Scaloni, whose side finished runners-up to Spain at the 2026 World Cup.Messi, an eight-time Ballon d'Or winner, announced his international retirement at the end of August at the age of 39, but has been included in the squad for the farewell match by Scaloni.The coach, who led Argentina to a third World Cup title in 2022, said he had played his part in ensuring the former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain forward would have one final appearance in front of Argentina's fans."I did my bit because I want to be there for his farewell and, since I don't know if I'll still be here in the future, we did everything possible so he could take part in this match," Scaloni said.Scaloni also said Messi, who scored his 100th goal for Inter Miami earlier this month, deserved to win another Ballon d'Or."If the award is for the best player..." he said when asked whether Messi should receive this year's prize.Argentina begin a series of three friendlies against Bolivia on September 30 in Cordoba before taking on Burkina Faso in Buenos Aires on October 3.Messi will join the squad for the third game against Benin on October 6 at River Plate's Estadio Monumental, which can accommodate 85,000 spectators.Scaloni declined to comment on his own future as Argentina coach, with his contract due to expire at the end of the year."As far as I'm concerned, there is nothing new," he said, adding that he has not yet held talks with Argentine Football Association president Claudio Tapia.

Messi set for Argentina farewell in Benin friendly

Lionel Messi was on Tuesday named in Argentina's squad for a friendly against Benin on October 6, a match that will serve as his farewell appearance after announcing his international retirement last month. The 39-year-old said in August he was retiring from Argentina duty after a two-decade international career that included winning the 2022 World Cup and Copa America triumphs in 2021 and 2024."We made the decision to invite the best player in the world, the symbol of our national team, our captain, Lionel Andres Messi, so that he can have the farewell he truly deserves on October 6 here in Argentina," said Argentine FA president Claudio Tapia. The match against Benin will take place at River Plate's Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires, which can accommodate 85,000 spectators.Tapia also invited all of Argentina's 2022 World Cup winners to join Messi for what he said would be an "unforgettable" occasion. Argentina begin a series of three friendlies against Bolivia on September 30 in Cordoba -- their first match since losing the World Cup final to Spain -- before taking on Burkina Faso in Buenos Aires on October 3. Messi has been included in the squad for the third match against Benin, when he is expected to make his 208th and final appearance for the national team. He is Argentina's all-time record scorer with 125 goals. Following the death of his father Jorge last month, Messi had said he had "serious doubts" about continuing to play football of any sort for "much longer"."It was a decision that hurt and still hurts deep in my soul but I understand that it is the right time," Messi said when he called time on his Argentina career.His contract with Major League Soccer club Inter Miami runs until the end of the 2028 season. Last month FIFA ordered Argentina to play their next home match with capacity reduced to 50 percent for breaches of its disciplinary code relating to using a sports event for making demonstrations of a non-sporting nature. After Argentina beat England 2-1 in a tense World Cup semi-final in July, several players held up a banner saying: "The Falklands are Argentine".The friendlies are also expected to count towards suspensions handed down following incidents after Argentina's World Cup final defeat by Spain.Midfielder Leandro Paredes received a 10-match ban, while defender Nahuel Molina was suspended for seven games and Thiago Almada for one.

Benin votes a month after foiled coup attempt

Benin voted Sunday in parliamentary and local elections, just one month after a failed coup plot shook the west African country and three months ahead of presidential polls.President Patrice Talon's ruling coalition is expected to strengthen its already powerful hand in the elections, with the main opposition Democrats party barred from the local polls.The elections come at a fraught moment for Benin, still reeling from a deadly coup attempt by army mutineers on December 7, which was put down by the military, with support from Nigeria and France.Talon, 67, who is nearing the end of his second five-year term, called on all voters to "do their duty" as he cast his ballot."Today is the beginning of a better life," he said.**media[403322]**The legislative elections will define the political landscape ahead of April's presidential polls, from which the opposition has also been struck from the ballot for failing to obtain the required number of signatures.Talon, who has served the constitutional two-term limit, is barred from running in April's elections.His hand-picked successor, Finance Minister Romuald Wadagni, is a strong favourite to win.Talon has presided over strong economic development across his nearly one decade in power, but critics accuse him of restricting political opposition and basic rights.**media[403323]**The single-round legislative polls will elect the 109 seats in the National Assembly, where Talon's three-party bloc hopes to strengthen its majority.The Democrats, only running in the parliamentary races, risk ceding ground to the ruling coalition, which currently holds 81 seats.Some observers say the opposition may lose all its 28 seats, given the current electoral law's tough requirement for parties to gather signatures from 20 percent of registered voters in each of the country's 24 voting districts to stand for parliament.The streets of economic capital Cotonou were calm as polling stations opened, AFP reporters said."I'm proud of the process and the organisation, and I hope everything goes well until the end," said craftsman Claude Somakpo.The campaign unfolded without large rallies, with most parties opting for grassroots strategies like door-to-door canvassing."All measures have been taken to guarantee a free, transparent and secure vote. No political ambition can justify violence or endanger national unity," the head of the electoral commission (CENA), Sacca Lafia, said Saturday.
