'Old-fashioned' South Africa thump Australia to level Test series

South Africa captain Temba Bavuma said his team beat Australia by playing "good old Test cricket" as the hosts levelled the three-match series with a win by an innings and 31 runs at St George's Park on Thursday.Bavuma was named man of the match for his career-best innings of 179. It provided the foundation for a victory which seemed improbable with the first two days ruined by rain and his team in deep trouble on the third morning after being sent in."I think it's just basically to try and stay in the moment," Bavuma said of the way South Africa kept their focus in a match which had major changes of fortune."When we were batting it was all about how we can extend it, how we can go another hour. Another hour becomes a session, how we can make sure we keep them on their feet because we know how that does have an effect."And then once the opportunity is there (when bowling) we've been calling on ourselves to be a lot more ruthless. We play good old Test cricket, try and wear the opposition down and then take them down when the opportunity presents itself."Bavuma said he didn't want to get too excited about the win with the final Test starting in five days. "There's still a job at hand with another match still to go," he said.South Africa were 110-6 on the third morning of the second Test before Bavuma had match-changing partnerships with Marco Jansen (85) and Simon Harmer (82) to enable South Africa to declare on 425-9.Australia collapsed to 99 all out in their first innings, with tall left-armer Jansen taking 5-33, but provided stern resistance in the follow-on innings before being bowled out for 295.Rain prevented any play before lunch on Thursday and more rain was threatening when Jansen claimed the final wicket after the final drinks break.Australian captain Pat Cummins said the fight shown by Travis Head, who scored 121, and Scott Boland, who was sent in as a nightwatchman on the fourth evening and batted until after tea on Thursday was a "blueprint" for the third Test."Scotty and Trav played their roles well but it was a long way to come back from. Last week (in winning the first Test in Durban) everyone contributed but today, across the board, not enough of us contributed."You've got class bowlers in the opposition. You might need to weather the odd storm but when you do get through it there are some runs out there."It's almost a reverse of last week. One side gets ahead and suffocates the other side with a few early wickets."Cummins said it was a series between the two top Test teams in the world. "The series at one-all, it's similar to where we would have thought it was going to be."BRIEF SCORES: South Africa 425 for 9 decl (Bavuma 179, Jansen 85, Harmer 82, Boland 5-81) beat Australia 99 (Jansen 5-33) and 295 (Head 121, Rabada 4-77, Mulder 3-64) by an innings and 34 runs.

South Africa close on 97-5 as Australian paceman Boland strikes in second Test

Australia paceman Scott Boland continued to torment South Africa's batsmen with two more wickets on Monday to leave the hosts on 97 runs for five wickets at stumps on the second day of the second Test at St George's Park.Boland finished the rain-affected day with figures of 4-31 to put Australia in a strong position with South Africa to resume on Tuesday with captain Temba Bavuma 41 not out and Wiaan Mulder unbeaten with two runs.Play got underway at 3:45 p.m. local time (1345 GMT) with 30.4 overs bowled after heavy rain in the morning threatened to wash out Monday's play.Boland, who took two wickets in the one hour of play possible on Sunday, added a third in the third over of the second day's play, inducing an edge from debutant opener Marques Ackerman, who was dismissed for six.Matthew Breetzke, brought into the home line-up after the 214-run defeat in the first Test in Durban last week, then departed for four runs after he was also caught behind by wicketkeeper Alex Carey, playing away from his body to Mitchell Starc's left-arm delivery.South Africa were in a precarious position at 40-4 but Bavuma led a fightback with Ryan Rickelton as they put on 52 runs for the fifth wicket.Rickelton was dropped on 26 by leg slip Marnus Labuschagne off captain Pat Cummins in what looked a regulation chance, but he only added five more runs before a brilliant one-handed catch by Matt Renshaw at first slip gave Boland a fourth wicket.Bavuma provided some home hope with a resolute innings in spite of the relentless pressure from the Australian attack, which had to do without Josh Hazlewood, who took a career-best 6-49 in the first Test but was absent with an upset stomach.No more rain is forecast for the rest of the Test as Australia look to wrap up the three-match series. Extra time is to be added to all three sessions on Tuesday. BRIEF SCORESStumps South Africa 97 for 5 (Bavuma 41*, Mulder 2*, Boland 4-31) vs Australia

Rabada returns as South Africa seek to bounce back against Australia

Fast bowler Kagiso Rabada will return to the South African team for the second Test against Australia starting at St George's Park on Sunday, captain Temba Bavuma said.Rabada did not play in the first Test in Durban, where South Africa were beaten by 214 runs, but trained with the team as he completed his rehabilitation from a hamstring injury.With the possibility of rain on the first two days of the match, both Bavuma and Australian captain Pat Cummins said they would delay finalising their teams until Sunday.But Bavuma said Rabada was "raring to go" and pointed to the fast bowler's outstanding record against Australia.Rabada has taken 58 wickets at an average of 21.39 in 11 Tests against Australia, including nine wickets when South Africa won the World Test Championship final at Lord's in 2025 and 11 in the corresponding match in 2017/18 when South Africa bounced back after losing the first Test in Durban."The bowlers feed massively off him," said Bavuma. "There's an aura and a lot of belief in KG (Rabada) and that rubs off on the other players."Bavuma indicated that batsmen Matthew Breetzke and the uncapped Marques Ackerman would both play in a re-jigged batting line-up as South Africa seek to bat for longer periods after a poor batting performance in Durban."The first innings was where we fell short," he said. "To concede a lead like that on a wicket like that was rather criminal."Cummins said Matt Renshaw was set to continue batting at number five after his man-of-the-match returns of 190 and 82 in Durban.Normally an opening batsman in Test cricket, Cummins said Renshaw deserved credit for his willingness to play a new role. "He just said, 'yep, no worries, whatever the team needs'."Cummins said Cameron Green was still not ready to play after suffering an abdominal injury in the one-day series against South Africa last month, although Josh Inglis was "close" to being ready to play after recovering from a broken finger.

Australia need six wickets on final day to win first Test

Australia’s Matt Renshaw played a leading role to leave his side needing six wickets on the last day of the first Test to beat South Africa as the hosts were 102-4 at the close of play at Kingsmead on Monday.Set 421 runs to win after Australia declared their second innings on 314-6, South Africa saw opener Ryan Rickelton, David Bedingham, captain Temba Bavuma and Tristan Stubbs all dismissed before stumps with part time spinner Renshaw weighing in with his first Test wicket as his dream performance continued.Aiden Markram (45 not out) and Wiaan Mulder, unbeaten on five, will resume on the final morning, needing to lead a stoic rearguard action if the home side are to avoid defeat.Rickelton’s place in the Test side looks under threat after another early dismissal. He was out for a duck after three balls of the first innings and scored two on Monday before an attempted pull shot saw him edge Josh Hazlewood’s rising delivery to wicketkeeper Alex Carey.Bedingham was the second wicket to fall, making 46 before being trapped lbw by Hazlewood and ending a patient 66-run partnership with Markram, while Bavuma scored a single run, prodding at Renshaw’s off spin and being caught bat-pad at short leg.Stubbs also made one, getting a thick edge to captain Pat Cummins’ delivery with another example of the poor shot selection that has dogged South Africa’s batting. RED-HOT BATTING FORMEarlier, Renshaw continued his red-hot batting form to allow his side to declare at tea, picking up where he left off in the first innings when he scored 190 of Australia’s 390 runs.The 30-year-old Queenslander continued to dominate the home bowlers, scoring 82 in the second innings before a controversial caught and bowled from Keshav Maharaj ended his contribution.It was the top score for Australia, who accelerated their run accumulation in a bid to give themselves time to put South Africa into bat and chase down the 10 wickets required for victory.They resumed on 33-0 and scored 141 runs in a fast-moving first session for the loss of four wickets and a further 140 in the afternoon. CAPTAIN CUMMINS IN WHIRLWIND BATTING DISPLAYOpener Nic Maddinson, who made a duck in the first innings on his return after a decade out of Test cricket, played some expansive shots before Anrich Nortje clean bowled him for 48, and there were useful contributions from Beau Webster, 39 not out, and Cummins, who bludgeoned four sixes in his whirlwind 12-ball 32.Travis Head’s 11 runs at the top of the Australia innings and 37 again from Marnus Labuschagne did not help their individual causes, although Labuschagne’s 53-run partnership with Steve Smith (27) for the third wicket did accelerate the run rate and put Australia into an advantageous position.Smith was struck on the helmet by Nortje and is being assessed under concussion protocols. He batted on after the hit but did not join the rest of the Australian team on the field at the start of South Africa’s chase and could be a doubt for the second Test, which starts in Gqeberha on Sunday. BRIEF SCORESSouth Africa 284 & 102 for 4 (Bedingham 46, Markram 45*, Hazlewood 2-20) trail Australia 390 and 314 for 6 dec (Renshaw 82, Maddinson 48, Maharaj 2-56, Nortje 2-56) by 319 runs

Miller, Bavuma bash Australia as South Africa win ODI series

Temba Bavuma and David Miller both struck centuries as South Africa defeated Australia by 32 runs in a high-scoring second one-day international in Johannesburg on Sunday to claim the three-match series with a game to spare.Australia sent their hosts in to bat and South Africa amassed 365 for nine in their 50 overs, before bowling the visitors out for 333 in 49.5 overs as they continued their dominance over their rivals with a 19th ODI win in their last 25 meetings.Australia were again undone by spin in the middle of the innings after a fast start to their reply and were not helped by the continued absence of seamer Pat Cummins and a side strain suffered by Nathan Ellis in the match that meant he bowled only four overs.South Africa made a cautious start to their innings and were rocked by the loss of Aiden Markram off the first ball, with Cooper Connolly taking a superb one-handed catch above his head off the bowling of Josh Hazlewood.Bavuma scored his 103 from 116 balls for his sixth ODI century in a measured innings where he scored all around the wicket. EXPLOSIVE MILLER POWERS SOUTH AFRICAMiller was more explosive, with nine sixes in his 142 from 93 balls, clearing the ropes with ease as he struck his career-best score and eighth ODI ton.There was little else of substance as the pair put on 156 for the fourth wicket and Jack Edwards, playing in his second ODI, was the pick of the bowlers with 5-67 in 10 overs.In a carbon-copy of Thursday’s 67-run win for South Africa in Durban, Australia made a lightning start to their reply as Mitch Marsh (84 from 53 balls) and Travis Head (84 from 76 balls) put on 130 in 17 overs for the first wicket.But the middle order struggled to score freely and South Africa’s three spinners tightened the screw.Keshav Maharaj (2-54), Bjorn Fortuin (2-70) and Markram (1-55) were all effective in their 10 overs on a very good batting wicket.Xavier Bartlett kept Australia in the game with a fine 50 runs from 28 deliveries but it was not enough. BRIEF SCORESSouth Africa 365 for 9 (Miller 142, Bavuma 103, Edwards 5-67) beat Australia 333 (Marsh 84, Head 84, Williams 3-54) by 32 runs

Bavuma expects callow S Africa fast bowlers to step up in Australia ODI series

South Africa must find a way to get the best out of their depleted fast bowling attack when they host Australia in a three-match one-day international series starting in Durban on Thursday, according to captain Temba Bavuma.Bavuma said a fearsome pack of fast bowlers for touring teams to contend with is in South African cricket's "DNA", but they have had to cast the net wide for this series.Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Kwena Maphaka and Ottneil Baartman were all ruled out with hamstring injuries, while Nandre Burger has a bad back.It has left an inexperienced seam bowling line-up to take on Australia, with Lizaad Williams, the Jansen twins, Marco and Duan, Gerald Coetzee, Corbin Bosch and Nqobani Mokoena having played only 72 ODIs between them."I think we're going to have to make the most of the bowling resources that we have from the seam department. There are options there. I think it's just how smartly we approach managing the loads of our fast bowlers," Bavuma told reporters on Wednesday."We want teams, when they come here, to know that they're going to have to deal with our fast bowlers. That's part of our DNA."South Africa have only played three ODIs in 2026 when a depleted squad swept Namibia 3-0 in a series this month.But as they prepare to host the 2027 World Cup a year from now, this is a crucial season for the team in the 50-over format."It's been a while since this ODI team has come together," Bavuma said. "I think there's a strong desire to look after our ODI record of late and ensure that we're putting our best foot forward out there on the field."From a team perspective, we generally know who those core players are (for the World Cup). I don't think we will move away too much from that," he added."We'll see new faces coming in, but probably that England series (in January 2027) will be closer to what we think we will have for the World Cup."

Bavuma returns for Tests against India

Temba Bavuma was Monday named as captain of South Africa’s squad for two World Test Championship matches in India next month having recovered from injury. Bavuma, who led South Africa to victory in the championship final against Australia in London in June, missed the country’s recent series in Pakistan because he was having treatment for a calf strain. South Africa were captained by Aiden Markram when they started their defence of their title by sharing the two-match series in Pakistan. Bavuma has captained South Africa in ten Tests, winning nine and drawing one. The squad announced by Cricket South Africa includes the bulk of the players who were in Pakistan. Off-spinner Prenelan Subrayen missed out despite playing in the first Test in the absence of Keshav Maharaj, who was recovering from injury. Durham batsman David Bedingham, who toured Pakistan but did not play in the Tests, made way for Bavuma. The 15-man squad includes three front-line spinners in Maharaj, Simon Harmer and Senuran Muthusamy, who took a combined 33 wickets in Pakistan. Coach Shukri Conrad said the players had shown “real character” in sharing the honours in Pakistan after losing the first Test. South Africa lost the toss in both matches and had to bat second in spin-friendly conditions. “We are expecting a similar challenge in India and many of the players who stood up for us in those conditions will again be key for us,” said Conrad. “Pakistan was a squad effort and India will demand the same. Every player has a role to play in ensuring we remain competitive in what is always a tough place to tour.” Squad: Temba Bavuma (captain), Corbin Bosch, Dewald Brevis, Tony de Zorzi, Zubayr Hamza, Simon Harmer, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Aiden Markram, Wiaan Mulder, Senuran Muthusamy, Kagiso Rabada, Ryan Rickelton, Tristan Stubbs, Kyle Verreynne (wkt) Fixtures: November 14-18, Kolkata November 22-26, Guwahati
