Unfair to compare us to Barca: Real Madrid's Mourinho

Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho said it was unfair to compare his side to Spanish champions Barcelona ahead of Sunday's La Liga Clasico. Hansi Flick's Barca have won back-to-back La Liga titles and lead the top flight, in which they are unbeaten, while Mourinho arrived this summer after Madrid went two seasons without a major trophy. The panorama has changed slightly, after Barca suffered their first defeat of the season at Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday, while Madrid have won their last four matches. Madrid are third in La Liga, trailing Barca by six points before Sunday's meeting at Camp Nou. "I think the people that thought a week ago Barca would thrash us will keep thinking the same thing," Mourinho told reporters on Saturday. "I don't think just for the Paris game, or Madrid's (4-1 win against) Leipzig, they will change their way of thinking." Mourinho highlighted that he has only been at the helm a few months, in comparison to Flick, who arrived at Barca in 2024. "People look at us like a finished product, but finished products in football are difficult because they are never finished... but they look at us like we're in an advanced phase of the process," continued Mourinho. "We've been working for three months, out of that you can take pre-season when the players were arriving (back from the World Cup), and the recent international break, then we've been together a month-and-a-half, two months... "This is the start of a product, we're in an initial phase where the coach is learning, analysing, bit by bit defining paths, the players are learning about the coach... comparing a team in this state (to more established sides), I think is unfair." Mourinho said form did not matter when it comes to the Clasico. "We've been in a good dynamic, winning games, playing well, scoring goals, but in the Clasico it doesn't matter what you did before, it has no influence," said Mourinho. "The Clasico is unique, normally the football world stops to watch it. Hopefully it's a great game. And we win." Mourinho said he would not change his plans to try and stop Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal. The 19-year-old Spain international is in sublime form and hopes to win the Ballon d'Or award on Monday."He's a great player and great players you respect," added Mourinho. "One thing is respecting, another thing is to change plans, structures, forgetting your own essence. That we will not do, neither for him or any other player of great quality we face." 'A great colleague' Barcelona coach Hansi Flick confirmed Jules Kounde was still out injured for the game, along with Dani Olmo, Eric Garcia and Andreas Christensen. The German coach said he expected a Madrid side arriving with "a lot of confidence" and praised his opposite number Mourinho. "I have the highest respect. When you're managing teams on this level for so many years and you always have success, it's about quality, he showed this at every club," Flick told reporters. "Every player from the (Germany) national team who worked under him speaks with a great respect, I think the same. He's a colleague, a very, very successful colleague and a great colleague." Flick said the 4-2 defeat in Paris by PSG gave his team some clues as to where they need to improve. "We analysed this game. We did many things really good but we saw some situations where we have to improve," added Flick. "We have to grow as a team. Tomorrow we play against one of the best teams in the world so it's a good opportunity to grow. To challenge ourselves, to improve ourselves and to grow as a team."

'Best in world' Yamal powers Barca to Betis rout, Atletico strike late

Barcelona coach Hansi Flick hailed Lamine Yamal as the best player in the world as his dominant side routed 10-man Real Betis 5-2 on Saturday to return five points clear at the top of La Liga.Atletico, second, snatched a late 1-0 win at Espanyol, while third-placed Betis are eight points adrift of the leaders and Real Madrid, fourth, host Sevilla on Sunday.Teenage winger Yamal scored a brilliant goal for Spanish champions Barca, with Rodri, Gabriel Jesus, Eric Garcia and Dani Olmo also finding the net at La Cartuja stadium in Seville.Betis had Facundo Bernal sent off for a headbutt on Yamal early in the second half of a pulsating clash.Barca set a new club record for victories at the start of a league campaign and equalled the all-time record of nine, set by Real Madrid in the 1968/69 season. Flick's side boast 11 wins from 11 games across all competitions.Yamal, who is hoping to be crowned the world's best player at the Ballon d'Or ceremony later in October, got the ball rolling with a spectacular opener."I think it was an amazing match for the fans, and all the people who love football, it was amazing," Flick told reporters."Lamine today, when you see the first goal he scored, unbelievable, this is for me, at the moment the best player in the world."Yamal, 19, turned sharply on the edge of the box to escape Bernal and then exquisitely curled into the top corner in the 10th minute."(It was) an incredible goal, we've got used to him doing this lately, I have to say," Rodri told DAZN."In the end, players like that make the difference. But I try to focus on the other things he brings... (like) hard work, a lot of solidarity with the team, understanding the game and where he could find space."Despite their irresistible attacking play, Barca's clear weakness under Flick has been their defence and Betis were level before the half-hour mark through a Valentin Gomez header.Former Manchester City midfielder Rodri put Barca back in front with a header from a corner, before Giovani Lo Celso thought he had equalised in spectacular fashion for the hosts.However, the Argentine midfielder's long-range goal was ruled out for a handball by Cucho Hernandez earlier in the move, much to Betis' chagrin.Jesus extended Barca's lead six minutes into the second half from Yamal's cut-back, moments after having another goal ruled out for offside.Ez Abde immediately pulled one back for Betis during a wild spell, and in the aftermath they were reduced to 10 men when Bernal was sent off for a headbutt on Yamal, who was booked for his part in a confrontation between several players from both sides.Garcia finished from close range for Barca's fourth and Raphinha came off the bench after missing the previous two matches injured, with Flick taking off Yamal to prevent a potential suspension for the Clasico next weekend."With this result, we have to change him," said Flick. "I (told him) I'm very proud of him because he played a fantastic game."Substitute Olmo finished the match off with a neat finish from the edge of the box as Betis backed off to allow Barca's attention to turn to Europe, where they face Champions League holders Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday.Earlier, Alex Baena struck in the 89th minute to snatch Atletico Madrid their narrow win at Espanyol.Spain international Baena smashed home from the edge of the box to claim the Rojiblancos an important late victory from a tight game in Cornella.Atletico have won six consecutive games across all competitions.Baena, who struggled last season but has been in fine fettle since winning the World Cup with Spain this summer, hugged coach Diego Simeone after finding the net."The World Cup took him to a different place, he sees football differently than others and (now) he's more confident and stronger, he's the player we went looking for," Simeone told reporters after Baena's fifth league goal of the campaign.

Yamal hits double as perfect Barca thrash Valencia

Lamine Yamal struck twice for Barcelona as they demolished Valencia 5-0 on Sunday to maintain their 100 percent start in La Liga. The reigning champions moved three points clear at the top of La Liga, after Jose Mourinho's Real Madrid lost 1-0 at Real Betis on Friday.Fermin Lopez, Raphinha and Pedri were also on target for Hansi Flick's swaggering visitors on a hot afternoon on Spain's east coast. Yamal did not take part in the team training session on Saturday after a knock but showed no signs of it during a dazzling display against Carlos Corberan's Los Che.Barcelona, the only team in the top flight to win their first four games, took control from the start to the upset of Valencia's fans at a persistently bad-tempered Mestalla stadium. Yamal opened the scoring with a clever lofted finish in the sixth minute after Lopez dinked a superb ball over the top for the teenage star.The 19-year-old slammed home at the near post for what he thought was Barca's second goal but the goal was disallowed for a tight offside after a VAR review. Lopez netted the second with a crisp finish in the 22nd minute after former Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon teed him up.Barcelona suffered a blow when Eric Garcia had to go off hurt midway through the first half after a collision with team-mate Rodri's shoulder, on the midfielder's first start since arriving this summer from Manchester City. Yamal fired narrowly wide and Lopez struck the post as Flick's side continued to dominate. Barca goalkeeper Joan Garcia made a smart save to thwart Arnaut Danjuma at his near post before the break.Raphinha, starting again as the team's centre-forward, tapped home his sixth goal of the season from close range after Lopez fed him. Valencia goalkeeper Stole Dimitrievski saved from Rodri before Pedri netted Barcelona's fourth after an exchange of passes with Dani Olmo.New arrival Gabriel Jesus came on for his Barca debut as a substitute in the final 10 minutes and sent a low effort just wide. Yamal stayed onside to collect another Olmo pass and put away Barca's fifth and conclude a profitable afternoon for both the World Cup winner and the Catalan giants.
