Australia public broadcaster staff strike over pay for first time in 20 years

Hundreds of staff at the Australian Broadcasting Corporation began a one-day strike Wednesday, the first walkout in 20 years, ‌over pay and working conditions, disrupting live ​news coverage at ‌the public broadcaster.Live programming was diverted to ‌content ⁠from the ‌UK broadcaster BBC when the ‌strike began at 11:00am (0000 GMT).Flagship programmes on ⁠TV and radio were also expected to be replaced by reruns during the 24-hour strike.**media[429069]**It comes after months of pay negotiations between staff and management. The majority of ABC staff this week rejected the latest offer of a ​10% pay rise over three years and a A$1,000 ($700) bonus for ongoing and fixed-term staff.One-third of the ‌ABC's 4,500 staff are ⁠unionised. Around 1,000 ​people voted in favour of taking ​industrial action after talks failed.The Media, Entertainment & Arts Alliance union said the offer was below inflation and failed to ensure secure work conditions. The A$1,000 bonus also excluded casual staff members, the union said."ABC staff are taking this step because they want fair pay that keeps up with the cost of living, genuine ‌job security, and working ‌conditions that allow them ⁠to continue serving the Australian public with integrity," ⁠Chief Executive ⁠Erin Madeley said.ABC Managing Director Hugh Marks said the strike was "very unfortunate"."It is not a great time for our teams to be out. There is a lot of things happening in the world," Marks told ​ABC Radio."We will be using BBC content where that's appropriate and where that's available to us. We will be maintaining services but they won't be of the standard that I would like to be on air."He said the offer given to staff was "fair and reasonable" and above inflation when ‌the bonus ​was counted.

BBC boss resigns over biased edit

The director general of Britain's BBC, Tim Davie, and the chief executive of news, Deborah Turness, have resigned following criticism over bias at the corporation, including in the way it edited a speech by US President Donald Trump.The BBC has been embroiled in a spate of allegations that it had failed to maintain political neutrality in its reporting, including in its coverage of Trump. The Daily Telegraph had reported for days on an internal document produced by a former BBC adviser on standards who had listed a raft of errors, including in the way a speech by Trump on January 6, 2001, was edited.

His Highness The Amir addressed regional conflicts, condemned violations of Qatar’s sovereignty, and reaffirmed Qatar’s role in promoting peace and diplomacy. British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) BBC website quoted His Highness the Amir as saying that Israeli Prime Minister seeks to turn the Arab region into an Israeli sphere of influence. The website quoted His Highness the Amir saying that Doha was subjected to “a grave violation of a state’s sovereignty and a blatant breach of international norms, and a heinous act which we branded as state terrorism.” US News Network (CNN) The Network highlighted His Highness the Amir’s remarks that “The fallback of this international order in favor of the logic of power means paving the way for the law of the jungle to prevail.” CNN aired video clips from His Highness the Amir’s speech, in which His Highness the Amir emphasized that “They visit our country while planning to bomb it.” Russian news agency (Sputnik) The news agency quoted His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani as saying: “Doha came under a treacherous attack targeting a meeting of the Hamas negotiating delegation at the residence of one of its members in a residential neighborhood hosting schools and diplomatic missions.” Sputnik also focused on His Highness the Amir’s statement that the Israeli attack constitutes an assault on a mediating, peace-making state whose diplomacy has been devoted to resolving conflicts through peaceful means.
