Newly-appointed Italy coach Roberto Mancini said Wednesday he was dreaming of bagging a major trophy, the Azzurri having missed out on the last three World Cups.Mancini was speaking at his first press conference since being unveiled as successor to Gennaro Gattuso, who resigned as Italy coach after their World Cup qualification play-off final defeat by Bosnia and Herzegovina in March.The 61-year-old Mancini was previously Italy boss from 2018 until 2023, leading them to the Euro 2020 title.He has been preferred to another ex-national team coach in Antonio Conte."I hope to win another trophy, maybe two," Mancini said."My goal is to make sure the team immediately gets back to winning ways."Mancini's first period at the helm of the Italy side ended suddenly when he took up the Saudi Arabia job.Leaving the Italy setup at the time, he said, was "a bit like losing the woman of your life".But the former Manchester City and Inter Milan coach, who has signed a four-year deal, vowed "to make sure the team is so good that the fans fall in love with it all over again".Mancini added: "I believe there are young, talented players in Italy. I simply believe we need to trust them and let them play."Mancini's first game in charge is a Nations League match against Belgium in Rome on September 25, before facing Turkey three days later.Then comes a trip to Paris when Italy take on France, with Zinedine Zidane at the helm."These will be important matches," he said. "We'll immediately see our strengths and the areas in which we'll need to improve."Mancini was appointed on Tuesday, along with Claudio Ranieri as technical director in place of Paolo Maldini, who reportedly threatened to resign if Mancini was appointed.Mancini's appointment, however, remains divisive despite leading Italy to the Euro 2020 title and a 37-match unbeaten streak.His abrupt resignation as Italy coach in the summer of 2023 to take charge of Saudi Arabia reportedly damaged his standing with many senior officials at the Italian federation, particularly as the Azzurri were struggling in their qualifying campaign for Euro 2024.Mancini left his job with the Saudi national side just 14 months later.He was most recently coach of Qatari club Al Sadd, with whom he signed a two-year deal last November.Now he will turn his attentions to the job of taking Italy back to the top of the international game.The four-time world champions have not reached a World Cup since 2014, and have not even played a knock-out stage match at the tournament since winning the 2006 final against France on penalties.The one success in that time was the European Championship victory, also secured in a shoot-out against England five years ago.Their title defence, with Luciano Spalletti at the helm, ended with a last-16 loss to Switzerland in 2024.Mancini also won three consecutive Serie A titles as Inter Milan boss between 2005 and 2008.He then led Manchester City to their first English league title since 1968 with a famous last-day victory over QPR in the 2011-12 Premier League season.

Former Italy playmaker Andrea Pirlo, who was favoured for the national coaching post, expressed his bitterness on Monday over the debate which has led to him no longer being a candidate.The 47-year-old had, to many Italian fans' surprise, become the favourite to be tasked with reviving the national side's fortunes after they failed for the third successive time to qualify for the World Cup.He had benefitted from Spanish great Pep Guardiola declining an offer.Despite the latest setback, Giovanni Malago, president of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), said later on Monday that the new coach would be named "soon".Whilst Pirlo had a stellar playing career - including being a key member of the 2006 World Cup-winning side - his coaching CV is short on success.A contract with a Russian betting firm had only added fuel to misgivings, with several Italian politicians saying over the weekend that his appointment would be inappropriate."(I) learned yesterday evening that I am no longer a candidate to be coach of the national side," Pirlo wrote in a post on Instagram, adding that he felt the need to "clarify certain points".'Great bitterness'According to Italian media, he was due to be named this week despite his only trophy success since turning to coaching in 2020 being a single Italian Cup.Presently coach of United Arab Emirates side Dubai United, he failed to deliver when in charge of Juventus - for whom he had sparkled as a player - Sampdoria and Turkish outfit Karagumruk.Pirlo said in his post that he was angry at being judged not on his sporting record but on the wider issue over his links to Russia.He and fellow 2006 World Cup winner Marco Materazzi had taken part in May at an event held by the betting firm in the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow, signing autographs."I have followed with great bitterness the debate surrounding my candidacy," he wrote, whilst thanking Italy's technical director and former AC Milan teammate Paolo Maldini and his advisor Leonardo for their "esteem and confidence (in him)"."I regret that a decision which is based on sporting criteria rapidly became a public controversy, in which intentions and ideas which do not reflect my personality were attributed to me."According to Italian media, whilst Leonardo and Maldini preferred Pirlo to the prickly but significantly more successful Antonio Conte, newly-installed federation chief Malago had been against the appointment from the start.Conte - who has won the Serie A title with three different clubs and also the Premier League with Chelsea - is back in the frame for the job of coaching the Euro 2020 champions, according to la Gazzetta dello Sport.Conte, who turns 57 on Friday, previously coached Italy from 2014-16, guiding the Italians to the Euro 2016 quarter-finals where they lost to Germany on penalties.Maldini is apparently threatening to resign, after just three weeks in the job, if either Conte or another former national coach Roberto Mancini, who coached them to Euro 2020 success, is appointed.The former AC Milan and Italy legend's preferred choice now is Brazil-born former Italy international Thiago Motta, who has coached Bologna and Juventus, amongst other clubs. 

Four-time World Cup winners Italy will face Northern Ireland in the semi-finals of the European playoffs for the 2026 tournament while Ukraine face star-studded Sweden.Italy will take on Northern Ireland on March 26 next year at an Italian venue that is yet to be confirmed, after the draw made in Zurich Thursday.Five days later the winner will travel to face the winner of Wales’s semi-final against Bosnia-Herzegovina.Despite another error-strewn qualification campaign, Italy still have a chance of reaching the World Cup finals for the first time since the 2014 tournament in Brazil, having failed to qualify in 2018 and 2022.Facing the Azzurri will be a daunting challenge for Northern Ireland, who have only beaten the Italians once in 11 meetings, and that was in 1958. Italy coach Gennaro Gattuso said: “Let’s concentrate on the first match. Northern Ireland are a team that we can beat. They’re a team that have their own style, they’re very physical... they’ll give us a good game but we can do it. We know about Wales and Bosnia, and playing in Cardiff is difficult for anybody, but for now let’s concentrate on the semi-final.”War-torn Ukraine will play a Sweden team that could feature Liverpool’s £125mn ($164mn) forward Alexander Isak and Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres.The Swedes, though, were woeful in qualifying, finishing bottom of their group, and only got into the playoffs thanks to their performance in the Nations League. Newly appointed English coach Graham Potter, formerly in charge of Brighton and Chelsea, faces a tough task to steer the Swedes to the finals in the United States, Mexico and Canada. Potter said Sweden had a “fantastic opportunity”.“We need to make sure we’re in a good place in March.We need to use our time until then wisely,” he said.Whoever triumphs in the Ukraine v Sweden match will face the winner of Poland’s meeting with Albania – the Albanians are bidding to reach football’s showpiece for the first time. Meanwhile, the Republic of Ireland, who reached the playoffs after a dramatic late goal from Troy Parrott earned a 3-2 win in Hungary on Sunday, face a tough trip to the Czech Republic.The winner of that match will host the winner of the semi-final between Denmark and North Macedonia.Turkiye will play Romania, who were surprise quarter-finalists the last time the tournament was played in the United States in 1994.The winner will face either Slovakia or Kosovo, who are also trying to reach a World Cup for the first time in their history. All the European semi-finals will take place on March 26, with the finals on March 31.In the inter-continental playoffs, New Caledonia – another nation bidding to make a first appearance at a World Cup finals – will play against Jamaica for the right to face the seeded Democratic Republic of Congo.Bolivia will play Suriname – yet another country seeking a first ever appearance – with the victor going on to a winner-takes-all game against Iraq.Those games will be played in March next year. The expansion of the 2026 World Cup to 48 teams from 32 teams in 2022 has led to a clutch of first-time qualifiers, including Curacao and Uzbekistan.
