Russell holds off Verstappen to claim imperious victory in Baku

George Russell resisted a late charge from Max Verstappen to claim his first lights-to-flag victory with a composed drive for Mercedes in Saturday's thrilling Azerbaijan Grand Prix.The 28-year-old Briton came home just 0.196 seconds ahead of the four-time champion with his Red Bull team-mate Isack Hadjar third on his return after a broken wrist in a race punctuated by two safety cars. It was Russell's first win on the fast, challenging streets of Baku, his first since the Austrian Grand Prix in June,and the eighth of his career. It trimmed team-mate Kimi Antonelli's lead in the drivers' championship to 66 points.Antonelli finished fifth behind Ferrari's Charles Leclerc after slicing through the field from 16th on the grid. Seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton was sixth in the second Ferrari. "It's amazing to be back on the top step so I want to say a big thank you to the team for helping me through a tough moment," said Russell."The first half of the race felt pretty plain sailing, getting the gap, but after the safety car I saw Max behind me and I knew it wasn't going to be easy. When the yellow flag came out, I lifted off the power and when I came back I had no turbo and Max nearly got me on the line." Verstappen was philosophical. "We had a good race," he said. "In the final lap, George lost a bit of boost so that's why I caught up quite a bit. It got close, but it wasn't enough."Hadjar drove in pain. "It's been a very long six weeks since I injured myself, but it felt like the right moment to come back. I felt strong and this is my first proper podium finish on pure pace so I am delighted." Racing Bulls' rookie Arvid Lindblad was seventh, Esteban Ocon eighth ahead of his Haas team-mate Oliver Bearman and Williams' Carlos Sainz.Russell made a near-perfect start from his 12th pole position to draw clear while, behind him, Oscar Piastri took advantage of a slow-starting Leclerc to take second. Antonelli dropped from 16th to 17th. Verstappen also enjoyed the opening lap and passed both Alpines before powering past Hamilton, Norris, Leclerc and finally team-mate Hadjar to rise to third.The Dutchman was grumbling about his tyres, but Russell on the same medium compound was already five seconds ahead of Piastri on softs. By mid-distance, Russell led by 10 seconds, but grazed the wall at Turn 15.Team-mate Antonelli was up to ninth as the Red Bulls scrapped for third, making life easy for Piastri in second. The processional action ended on lap 30 when Williams' Alex Albon crashed at Turn Five, triggering a Safety Car deployment during which the leaders all pitted.After five laps, the race resumed with the Dutchman passing Piastri at Turn One . Behind him Franco Colapinto lunged up the inside but ran out of space entering the next corner. He locked up and went sideways pushing Alpine team-mate Pierre Gasly into Lando Norris in a McLaren. The three went off the track in a synchronised slide.Both drivers for the struggling French team were in position for top-10 finishes. "Oh my God! Oh my God! I don't believe it," said Gasly on team radio adding a swear word. "So many points gone."A second safety car came out for three laps. After the restart Piastri locked-up,dropping to 14th and gifting Hadjar third. Antonelli passed Hamilton with 10 laps to go to take fifth.

Antonelli 'mad' about crash in Azerbaijan qualifying

World championship leader Kimi Antonelli said he was feeling "mad" at himself for the mistake which saw him crash his Mercedes and wreck his hopes during Friday's qualifying for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.The 20-year-old Italian, who missed most of Friday's practice sessions after suffering a hydraulics failure, blamed himself for making a mistake as track conditions changed and delivered unexpected extra grip.Antonelli clipped the wall on Turn 1 in Q1 and picked up a puncture, his first mistake since crashing in final practice in Australia.He wanted to continue but race engineer Pete Bonnington overruled him, telling him it was a "fairly big job" and to come into the pits."The grip was coming up very quickly, lap by lap," said Antonelli."Obviously, I turned in and then suddenly I had a lot more front end than the lap before and I touched the wall."It's a mistake from my side. Very unnecessary and I'm mad about it and we'll try to do better tomorrow."The car has been very strong all this weekend and George (Russell) has been doing incredibly well, but we'll try our best to recover as many places as possible."His Mercedes team-mate George Russell took pole position, the 12th of his career and fifth this year, by more than eight-tenths of a second ahead of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc to boost his faint hopes of reducing Antonelli's 81-point lead in the title race.Antonelli ended up qualifying 16th on the grid with many drivers forecasting that he will finish second behind Russell in the race.He vowed to overcome his poor grid position as he did at his home Italian Grand Prix where he won from 19th on the grid after taking power-unit penalties."Kimi is starting well down again," said Russell. "But he has shown that he can be at the back and end up on the top step a few times so... we'll see what we have to do."

Verstappen and Norris blame slow cars as Mercedes tops qualifying

Max Verstappen and Lando Norris both blamed their cars' lack of straight-line speed for disappointing grid positions after qualifying eighth and fifth for Saturday's Azerbaijan Grand Prix.Both world champions said their cars lacked the power to match the speed of the Mercedes that carried George Russell to a dominant pole position ahead of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc."The whole qualifying session, I was lacking top speed," said four-time world champion Verstappen, who had been top of the times in his Red Bull in the earlier final free practice session. "The engine was just not working.""That was one problem and then in Q3, I was about to start my middle lap, but the battery didn't charge."So you start a lap with half a battery -- so you have to abort and then you lose temperature because you don't have enough power basically."It then snowballs into the final lap and again no top speed and a yellow flag in my lap. That's where you are!"So, I have no idea for tomorrow. We were in a really good place all week, but then had a disaster of a qualifying because of a lot of issues. Let's see what we can do."Reigning champion Norris said he felt that a front row grid position was possible in his McLaren, but did not have the power to beat Russell."I think P2 was possible," he said. "I felt confident in the car, to be honest, but I just pushed the braking a bit too much.""I'd rather die trying to get a pole than settle for third, fourth or fifth."I'd rather put together a perfect lap than an average lap and I paid the price for that."The car's not bad, we're just a long way off -- especially my car is a long way off in the straights. It's limiting because there's lots of straights here."Of course, I hope for a podium, but with my straight-line speed it will be impossible."Verstappen's Red Bull team-mate Isack Hadjar, back in action after missing three races with a broken wrist, qualified an impressive fourth ahead of the Dutchman while Oscar Piastri was third in the second McLaren.Lewis Hamilton qualified eighth, six places behind Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc who he assisted with a 'tow' on his final best lap.He said: "It was pretty bad in qualifying once again. And it's not for the lack of trying."We changed our plan - instead of doing two runs, we ended up waiting and because I was ahead of Charles, I had nobody ahead of me for the tow."We just couldn't compete with Mercedes -- they're just outright so much quicker on the straights. They did a great job."

Russell leads Mercedes 1-2 in Azerbaijan GP practice

George Russell topped the times ahead of team-mate and world championship leader Kimi Antonelli as Mercedes dominated Thursday's second practice for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.The pair delivered a 1-2 as Russell completed a 'double top' ahead of Red Bull's four-time world champion Max Verstappen by eight-tenths of a second.Russell was fastest in one minute and 43.347 seconds to outpace his Italian partner by 0.552sec in a convincing display of speed on the fast and unforgiving barrier-lined streets of the Azeri capital.Charles Leclerc was fourth ahead of his Ferrari team-mate seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, with reigning world champion Lando Norris sixth for McLaren ahead of Alpine's Pierre Gasly and his McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri."We are miles off," said Norris. "We're up there, let's say, we're in the position we expected to be in, but I'm 1.5 seconds off the pace. So, pretty pants."We'll see what work we can do tonight. The car didn't feel that bad so, yeah, it's a knife in the heart when you see how far off you are."Isack Hadjar was ninth in the second Red Bull, having returned to action after breaking his wrist. DRIVERS SURVIVE NARROW ESCAPESSeveral drivers survived narrow escapes from brushes with the barriers and walls, but the session was halted only once for a red flag when Racing Bulls' rookie Arvid Lindblad crashed in the narrowest section of the circuit, but was unhurt.Russell and Verstappen set the early pace before Norris, his car using cable ties to retain the floor boards, went top only for the Dutchman to respond as the drivers settled into a groove of fast laps.After 15 minutes, Antonelli was still in the pits as his car was being rebuilt following an engine change after he suffered a hydraulics failure during FP1."I felt comfortable in the car, despite the disruption, and we focused on maximising every opportunity," said the 20-year-old."Losing laps in practice is not ideal, particularly on a street circuit like Baku where confidence builds with every lap and run."Hadjar was running with a fresh gearbox after struggling on his return to action.Verstappen, Leclerc and Russell clocked fastest lap times as Hamilton upset Lawson when he inadvertently baulked him. "Oh my God, that is so dangerous," he said. The stewards noted.But Russell emerged quickest, just as he did in the earlier opening practice, to complete a solid day's work for constructors' championship leaders Mercedes.Aston Martin drivers Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll are set to start at the back of the grid after taking significant grid penalties for exceeding their permitted number of engine component changes.They propped up the field in second practice, with Alonso only completing 11 laps as he finished last.

Red Bull's Hadjar to make racing return at Azerbaijan Grand Prix

French driver Isack Hadjar will make his racing return alongside Max Verstappen for Red Bull at this weekend's Azerbaijan Grand Prix having recovered from the wrist injury that sidelined him from the last three races, the team said on Tuesday. New Zealander Liam Lawson, who had stepped in for Hadjar, will return to Racing Bulls. Japanese racer Yuki Tsunoda, who filled Lawson's seat alongside British rookie Arvid Lindblad, is set to step back into his reserve role. "Having made a successful recovery from his wrist injury, Isack will return to action at the Baku City Circuit on Thursday," Red Bull said in a statement."The team would like to sincerely thank Liam for his professionalism, dedication and hard work over the past three races."Stepping in under challenging circumstances, he delivered some impressive performances and made a valuable contribution to the team."Hadjar missed the Dutch, Italian and Spanish Grands Prix.Lawson, who started last year as Verstappen's Red Bull team mate before being demoted to Racing Bulls two races into the season, finished in the points in two of those three races.The opening day of practice for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix is set for Thursday with the race on Saturday instead of the traditional Sunday slot due to the country's Remembrance Day.

"We've made some good steps with the car over the last few races and we have some good memories here," says Max Verstappen.

After karting fun, Verstappen looks to keep winning feeling going in Baku

Verstappen wins in Baku as Piastri crashes out

Verstappen leads every lap to win in BakuPiastri crashes on opening lap, lead slashed to 25 pointsNorris starts and finishes seventhRussell second, Sainz thirdMcLaren kept waiting for 10th constructors' titleRed Bull's Max Verstappen cruised to a dominant Azerbaijan Grand Prix victory while Oscar Piastri crashed on the opening lap and had his Formula One lead over McLaren teammate Lando Norris slashed to 25 points.McLaren had hoped to secure their 10th Formula One constructors' title, and second in a row, Sunday with a record seven rounds remaining but must now wait until Singapore on October 5 after their lowest scoring weekend of the season.George Russell finished second for Mercedes, who moved up to second place and 333 points behind McLaren with 346 still to be won, and Carlos Sainz third for Williams's first podium finish since 2021.Norris started and finished seventh in what will rank as a missed opportunity, with six points gained on his rival but his chances of more scuppered by a slow 4.1-second pitstop for the second successive race. The win was Verstappen's second in a row and he led every lap from pole to flag, also setting the fastest lap for a "Grand Slam" that revived his slim title hopes with the reigning champion now 69 points behind Piastri. He took the chequered flag 14.609 seconds clear of Russell, after being more than 32 seconds clear before taking his pitstop."I think this weekend has been incredible for us," said Verstappen after his 67th career win, fourth of the season and second in Baku after a 2022 victory. "For us to win here again is just fantastic."We had clean air all the time and you could then look after your tyres. And yeah, it was pretty straightforward."Russell, recovering from sickness and starting fifth on the grid, was happy to see a rough weekend finish strongly while Sainz - voted driver of the day - was the happiest man on the podium."I cannot describe how happy I am and how good this feels. It tastes even better than my first ever podium," said the Spaniard, a four-times race winner with Ferrari who had started on the front row.The big story came on the opening lap when Piastri, who crashed in qualifying and started ninth, jumped the start and went to the back of the field before ploughing into the wall at turn five. The uncharacteristic errors ended the Australian's record of being the only driver to score in every race this season and also put the brakes on a run of 34 races in the points. He had not failed to finish a race since his 2023 rookie season."Certainly not my finest moment," the 24-year-old told Sky Sports."I just anticipated the start too much and yeah...silly simple error really."Italian rookie Kimi Antonelli was fourth for Mercedes, redeeming himself after a poor home race weekend at Monza, with New Zealander Liam Lawson enjoying a career high fifth for Racing Bulls.Yuki Tsunoda was sixth for Red Bull with Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc following Norris home in eighth and ninth, with the pair swapping places on team orders because Hamilton had fresher tyres.French rookie Isack Hadjar made it a double points finish for Racing Bulls in 10th.Piastri's crash brought out the safety car, a regular feature of races in Baku, and provided the main drama of the 51- lap race around the windy city streets where the threat of a downpour failed to materialise.Norris lost a place to Hadjar and was then passed by Leclerc when the race re-started after the safety car period. The Briton followed Leclerc past Hadjar, whose car had suffered an hydraulics problem before the start, and could have passed both Leclerc and Lawson had his pitstop not cost him critical seconds. He ultimately passed Leclerc with 10 laps remaining but was unable to find a way past Tsunoda."I did the best I could yesterday, the best I could today," said Norris."Every race I didn't win was an opportunity missed, so of course today I wanted more. It was not a good result, but I couldn't do anything more today."
