Australia confirms first case of H5N1 bird flu on sub-Antarctic Macquarie Island

Australia yesterday confirmed its first case of H5N1 bird flu on the sub-Antarctic Macquarie Island, with the deadly virus found in the remote territory’s vulnerable elephant seal population.  Australia’s Chief Veterinary Officer Beth Cookson said that official testing confirmed the highly pathogenic virus strain “in samples collected from an elephant seal and a kelp gull on Macquarie Island, marking the first H5 event on this island”.  Australia in June became the last continent to report bird flu, although the virus was detected in late 2025 on another of its sub-Antarctic territories, Heard Island, where more than 13,000 baby seals were killed by the virus, according to local media.  Like Heard Island, Macquarie Island, a Unesco World Heritage-listed territory located in the Southern Ocean halfway between Australia’s Tasmania state and Antarctica, is a key breeding ground for southern elephant seals. The mammals, which can weigh up to 3,600kg (7,936 pounds), are particularly susceptible to H5 bird flu, with pup mortality rates in some cases of more than 90%, according to the federal government.  In August, Australia’s environment department said it would withdraw personnel from a research station on Macquarie Island due to the “psycho-social risk to expeditioners of a potential H5 avian influenza outbreak”.  Expert assessments predicted the virus would likely cause a significant elephant seal mortality event during the upcoming breeding season, the environment department said.

Jordan’s King, Australian Deputy PM discuss defence and security cooperation

King Abdullah II of Jordan and Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defense Richard Marles discussed ways to strengthen bilateral defense and security cooperation to promote regional stability during a meeting in Canberra on Tuesday.During the meeting, King Abdullah II emphasized the importance of stepping up international efforts to de-escalate tensions through dialogue and diplomacy, stressing the need to respect the sovereignty of Arab states and ensure their security.In a related development, King Abdullah visited the Headquarters Joint Operations Command of the Australian Department of Defense, where he met with the Commander of Joint Operations Vice Admiral Justin Jones. Their discussions focused on strengthening defense cooperation between Jordan and Australia.

Australia's central bank raises cash rate to 15-year high

The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) raised its cash rate target by 25 basis points to 4.6% from 4.35%, taking borrowing costs to their highest level in 15 years as the central bank steps up efforts to contain persistent inflationary pressures.The increase marks the RBA's fourth rate hike this year and brings the total increase in borrowing costs in 2026 to one percentage point. The decision comes as underlying inflation remains at 3.6%, above the central bank's 2-3% target range, with the RBA warning that inflationary risks remain elevated.The rate hike is set to further squeeze mortgage holders, particularly households carrying large home loans, as higher borrowing costs put additional pressure on household budgets. The 4.6% cash rate is the highest level faced by a generation of borrowers whose mortgages were taken out after 2011.The impact will not be uniformly negative for households, however. Savers with high-interest deposit accounts could benefit from higher returns if banks pass on the RBA's increase by raising deposit rates, although lenders ultimately determine how much of the increase is passed through to customers.

Under-fire Labuschagne named in Australia Test squad for South Africa

Under-pressure batsman Marnus Labuschagne was retained Monday by Australia for their Test tour of South Africa, with Cooper Connolly, Matthew Kuhnemann and Michael Neser also included in a 16-man squad. Number three Labuschagne has failed to score a century since 2023 and flopped again in two home Tests against Bangladesh last month with scores of one, 31 and four. He was subsequently axed from Australia's squad for three one-dayers in Zimbabwe and another three in South Africa preceding the Tests. But selectors opted against a red-ball change for what will be the team's first Test series in South Africa since the infamous "Sandpapergate" ball-tampering scandal in 2018. "This is a reasonably condensed three-game series, on the back of six one-day internationals, with only short breaks between each game," said chief selector George Bailey. "The squad provides balance and options for each Test and the variety of conditions we may face." All-rounder Connolly's selection is another indication that the 23-year-old is seen as a long-term prospect while Kuhnemann was preferred to Todd Murphy as the second spinner behind Nathan Lyon. Neser, who like Labuschagne was born in South Africa, provides back-up for the pace trio of Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc. Australia travel to Durban for the first Test on October 9 before the series moves to Gqeberha and Cape Town. Only Cummins, Starc, Hazlewood, Lyon, Steve Smith and Matt Renshaw have played Test cricket before in South Africa. The last time they were there, Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft were all sent home in shame. Smith was banned for a year and sacked as captain after conspiring to alter the ball using sandpaper during the third Test in Cape Town, while the now-retired Warner, considered the ringleader, was suspended for 12 months and stripped of all leadership roles. Australia Test squad: Pat Cummins (capt), Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Cooper Connolly, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Matthew Kuhnemann, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Michael Neser, Matthew Renshaw, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Beau Webster
