France have scored a tournament-leading 14 goals in the World Cup so far but coach Didier Deschamps urged his players on Wednesday to achieve even greater attacking efficiency when they take on Morocco in Thursday's quarter-final. The meeting is a rematch of the 2022 World Cup semi-final, when France ended ⁠Morocco's historic run in Qatar, but this time the North Africans are no longer the surprise outsiders but ⁠a confident side aiming for the title. "We have to be efficient, offensively speaking," Deschamps told a press conference. "In all the areas both teams have strong assets." "We are efficient but we could have done better on this front. Sometimes you have six chances and score two goals and sometimes you have two chances and score twice. It is more important to be efficient." France edged past Paraguay in the round of 16 with a scrappy 1-0 win courtesy of a ⁠Kylian Mbappe penalty. The France captain has seven goals in the tournament, second behind Argentina's Lionel Messi, who has eight. Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele, Michael Olise and Bradley Barcola have given France one of the most dangerous forward lines at the World Cup. Morocco eased through their group stage, before knocking out Netherlands and co-hosts Canada, and confirming their status as serious title contenders. "Morocco's profile is not the one of Paraguay. We met them four years ago in the semi-finals," Deschamps said. "They played the AFCON (Africa Cup of Nations) final. They have top individuals. ⁠They are not here to play. They are here to win. ⁠We have to be ⁠ready and perform and deliver against this great team." Deschamps will need to wait and see whether midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni, who has been nursing a muscle injury, will be fit in time for the game. "He feels better but I left early from the hotel this morning. I cannot say more. He might take part in training today. All other players they are available," Deschamps said. As for France's appeal to have Michael Olise's yellow card in the game against Paraguay rescinded, Deschamps said FIFA had informed them the caution stood. The ruling comes days after the furore caused by FIFA's decision to suspend a match ban after a red card was given to U.S. player Folarin Balogun and following an intervention by President Donald Trump.  

France begin their final push for a third World Cup crown on Thursday when they take on Morocco in a blockbuster showdown to kick off a star-studded quarter-final line-up.After a month of scintillating action that has dispelled anxieties over sky-high ticket prices and geopolitics, the biggest, boldest and most logistically complex World Cup ever staged has been whittled down to eight teams.France have emerged as the outstanding side after a series of dazzling attacking displays in the United States, where all the remaining matches will be played.But they face their toughest test so far against African champions Morocco at the Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, outside Boston.Les Bleus have surged into the last eight in style, scoring 14 goals in five games - seven of them from prolific captain Kylian Mbappe - one of four star forwards battling for the Golden Boot.Argentina's Lionel Messi tops the scoring chart with eight, Mbappe and Norway's Erling Haaland have seven each and England's Harry Kane has six.Thursday's opening quarter-final is a repeat of the 2022 World Cup semi-final in Qatar, won by France, who went on to lose an all-time classic final against Argentina on penalties.Impressive Morocco eased through the group phase before battling past the Netherlands in the last 32 and swatting aside co-hosts Canada.The Atlas Lions boast a potent mix of technical quality, physicality and tactical nous under the guidance of coach Mohamed Ouahbi, who masterminded Morocco's shock victory in the under-20 World Cup last year.France coach Didier Deschamps told reporters on Wednesday - a World Cup rest day - that Morocco were a "top-tier side"."We faced them four years ago in the semi-finals, and they've played in an Africa Cup of Nations final," he said."They are a very, very good team with excellent players - they aren't here by accident. It's going to be a clash between two teams that like to have possession, attack, and score goals."Deschamps, stepping down after the tournament after 14 years in charge, said he was unconcerned by the appointment of Argentine officials to oversee the match, with a repeat of the 2022 final still possible.The winner will advance to a semi-final against the victor of Friday's tie in Los Angeles between European champions Spain and Belgium.The clinical Spaniards, who have not conceded a single goal so far, eliminated Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal in the last 16 and will fancy their chances of overcoming Belgium, who dismantled the United States 4-1 in the last 16.On the other side of the draw, holders Argentina face Switzerland in Kansas City on Saturday after staggering into the quarter-finals.The South Americans, aiming to become the first back-to-back champions since Brazil in 1962, were given an almighty scare by Cape Verde in the last 32.On Tuesday, Messi inspired an incredible Houdini act in a jaw-dropping 3-2 defeat of Egypt in Atlanta, when the reigning champions were seemingly down and out, trailing by two goals late in the game.Messi, who missed a penalty in the first half, said: "We didn't want today to be the end, we didn't want to go home."The winner of the Argentina-Switzerland clash will face either Norway or England, who clash in Miami on Saturday.England advanced with a pulsating 3-2 defeat of co-hosts Mexico at the Estadio Azteca that has given the Three Lions renewed belief in their bid to win a first major title since 1966.Blocking England's path is a formidable Norway side spearheaded by the irrepressible Haaland, who scored both goals in Sunday's last-16 win over Brazil.Off the field, the Egyptian football federation said it had asked for the officiating team that handled the Pharaohs' defeat to Argentina to be thrown out of the World Cup.The federation filed a complaint to FIFA pointing out "serious refereeing mistakes committed by the team of referees and double standards, which caused the Egypt team to lose the match".Croatia coach Zlatko Dalic announced his resignation after nine years in charge, which included a run to the final in 2018. 

Morocco coach Mohamed Ouahbi said "we're no longer a surprise" after reaching the World Cup quarter-finals on Saturday and hit back at "bold" claims by Canada's Jesse Marsch.The north African side were not at their best but were clinical in defeating Marsch's co-hosts 3-0 in Houston and will face France or Paraguay next.Morocco made the semi-finals at the 2022 World Cup and won the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, and Ouahbi said: "We're no longer a surprise today and that's a great source of pride."I think this is only the beginning and I hope we'll keep producing this kind of run for many years."Morocco lost to France in the last four at Qatar 2022, but the coach said revenge was not their motivation if they clash next in North America."We want to go as far as possible and make our people proud," he said.After Canada were the better team in the first half, Azzedine Ounahi scored twice for Morocco on 50 and 82 minutes to kill off the tie."What we're trying to get across to our players is that we're playing in a World Cup, which means you go through difficult moments," said the coach."What we needed to do was hold on and show resilience when things aren't going so well."His opposite number Marsch said he felt his side had been the better team, to which Ouahbi replied: "In terms of intensity they were good, that has to be said."Were they better? Hard to say that when you lose 3-0, it's a bold claim," he remarked."They were well organised, but I think in the second half there was no contest."In any case," he added, "I'm not sure many teams are going to win by that scoreline in the round of 16." 

A "proud" Canada became the first of the co-hosts to exit the World Cup as a clinical Morocco won 3-0 to reach the quarter-finals on Saturday in Houston.The 2022 semi-finalists Morocco will face title favourites France or Paraguay as the business end of the tournament in North America approaches.After a first half littered with more bookings than shots and with Canada on top, midfielder Azzedine Ounahi fired the opener on 50 minutes.Canada - playing the biggest game in their footballing history - pushed for an equaliser, but Ounahi scored his second to finally see off the resistance of Jesse Marsch's men.Substitute Soufiane Rahimi slipped in the third with the last kick of the match."It's a World Cup match and these are difficult games with teams playing for their lives," said Morocco coach Mohamed Ouahbi."We reacted very well in the second half in the second balls and the duels. I have to recognise that Canada were impressive, they played a top match."It was no surprise for us, but in the second half we were able to profit from the space they left us, that was the key."The scoreline was tough on Canada, who were the better side until the opening goal in front of a crowd of 68,777 as they sought to extend what was already a historic run.Marsch said: "What a privilege our fans have had to root on a team like this - that goes after the game, does not play defensive."We have to be in these situations more and more and find ways to succeed, and we have to build from that."As good as Morocco are, I'd rather be us. I'm really proud of our guys. We went after the game and they are really hurting right now, but I couldn't be prouder."Canada came into the contest in uncharted territory, having won a World Cup match and then a knockout game for the first time to get to the last 16.They were clear underdogs and their fans were outnumbered by Morocco supporters at the air-conditioned Houston Stadium. Canada start strongYet they looked the more confident at the start, Tani Oluwaseyi turning sharply in the box and forcing Morocco's Montreal-born goalkeeper Yassine Bounou to save with a stretched-out leg after 10 minutes.From Canada's fourth corner of the half, defender Alistair Johnston failed to make the most of a free header. Morocco were rattled.After 20 minutes Ouahbi's team suffered a big injury blow, Bayern Munich-bound Ismael Saibari - who had scored three times at the tournament - coming off for Rahimi.Immediately after the drinks break Rahimi had an optimistic attempt from distance, registering Morocco's first shot on target with a quarter of the game gone.There was a flashpoint shortly before half-time when Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi and defender Richie Laryea had a brief shoving match, with both shown yellow cards.Referee Michael Oliver booked six players - four from Morocco -- in a half high on niggly fouls and low on goalmouth action.The build-up to the last World Cup game of seven in Houston, with the United States celebrating its 250th birthday, was the highlight until that point.Morocco, who beat Canada in the group phase at the 2022 World Cup, came out for the second period transformed. Five minutes after the restart Hakimi pinged a low free-kick to Ounahi unmarked outside the box and he swept in first time.Canada goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau had his view blocked by two of his defenders and the ball also went through Rahimi's legs.On 82 minutes, Ounahi was the man in the right place again on the breakaway with another right-footed first-time finish, before Rahimi pounced in the 98th minute.  

Morocco defeated the Netherlands in a penalty shoot-out to advance to the last 16 of the World Cup on Monday after a thrilling battle in Monterrey finished 1-1 after extra-time.Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou made the crucial save to block the Netherlands’ fourth penalty from Crysencio Summerville before striker Ismael Saibari stepped up to blast home the winning spot-kick that sealed a 3-2 shootout win.The victory sends Morocco into a last 16 clash with Canada in Houston on Saturday.An enthralling match had gone to extra time after Issa Diop had glanced in a dramatic equaliser for Morocco in the first minute of stoppage time as the Netherlands closed in on victory.The Dutch had taken the lead midway through the second half with a goal from Cody Gakpo, playing just days after his partner had confirmed the death of the couple's unborn son.Liverpool forward Gakpo sank to the turf and appeared overcome with emotion as he was surrounded by team-mates in a prolonged group embrace.But Morocco forced extra time when an unmarked Diop headed home from substitute Chemsdine Talbi's cross in injury time.Morocco had created the better chances of a fractious encounter, which saw players from both sides flying into tackles to test the patience of Brazilian referee Wilton Sampaio.The Atlas Lions almost took the lead on 20 minutes when Neil al-Aynaoui glanced an Achraf Hakimi corner goalwards only to be denied by a superb reflex save from Netherlands goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen.Verbruggen was pressed into action moments later, this time doing well to tip a vicious strike from Hakimi over the bar.The fierce nature of the contest was on full display midway through the half when Saibari was lucky to escape sanction after elbowing Jan Paul van Hecke in the face.The Dutch continued to enjoy plenty of possession but were unable to convert it into goalscoring chances.Their best effort came on 44 minutes when Tottenham's Micky van de Ven uncorked a ferocious shot from the edge of the area that was tipped over by Bounou.Van Hecke continued to find himself in the thick of the action, and after bloodying his head in a collision in the penalty area, made his presence felt with a crunching tackle that upended el-Aynaoui just before half-time.As the half ended Saibari just failed to connect with a cross that flashed across the Dutch goal before going behind.The drama continued into an end-to-end second half, but appeared to have tilted in the Netherlands' favour when coach Ronald Koeman brought on forward Wout Weghorst in a flurry of substitutions after the hydration break.Weghorst made an immediate impact flicking on a long ball to send Summerville bearing in on goal. Summerville crossed to Gakpo, who hurled himself at the ball to score.The Netherlands, superbly marshalled by Gakpo's Liverpool team-mate Virgil van Dijk, appeared to be heading for victory but Diop's late header sent it to extra-time.Morocco looked to have made the breakthrough when Soufiane Rahimi went through on goal in the 96th minute, only to be denied by a jaw-dropping save from Verbruggen.The Netherlands held on for penalties but despite Morocco missing their first when El-Aynaoui hit the bar, the north Africans recovered to win. 

Morocco twice overcame the shock of conceding to Haiti to win a World Cup thriller 4-2 in Atlanta on Wednesday, but missed out on top spot in Group C to Brazil.Haiti bowed out with their first World Cup goals for 52 years as a Yassine Bounou own goal and Wilson Isidor’s stunning strike twice gave them the lead.Achraf Hakimi and Ismael Saibari, with his third goal in as many games at the World Cup, levelled before half-time.Soufiane Rahimi was nearly brought to tears when the 30-year-old's deflected effort found the top corner to give Morocco the lead before Gessime Yassine rounded off the scoring.But by finishing second to Brazil on goal difference, Morocco will head to Monterrey for a likely meeting against the Netherlands or Japan in the last 32 on Monday.Despite bowing out without a point, Haiti's performances at a first World Cup since 1974 have done a nation gripped by poverty proud.Les Grenadiers were already eliminated after losing to Scotland and Brazil, but the thousands of Haitian expats in the stands at Atlanta were undeterred as every attack was met with deafening cheers."Today we scored two goals, we are really proud of it, the emotions were big, but it is still really frustrating because we didn't get a point," said Sunderland striker Isidor."With the generation we have I am confident we are going to be here again to win Haiti's first point in a World Cup."Haiti's long wait for a goal on the global stage was ended after just 10 minutes when Jean-Kevin Duverne got to the by-line and Lenny Joseph flicked his cross into the net via a deflection off Bounou.Hakimi has continued to captain Morocco despite learning mid-tournament that he is to face a trial on rape charges in France.But the reigning African footballer of the year said he was still in a good place "personally and professionally" after helping Paris Saint-Germain to a second consecutive Champions League title and his country into the knockout stages of the World Cup."I am in a very good moment, personally and professionally," said Hakimi, who won man-of-the-match."I feel very good, I have good people around me that help me concentrate on the most important thing and the truth is it is one of the most important moments of my career. I hope to continue like this for as long as possible."Hakimi equalised when he was left with the simple task of forcing the ball over the line after Johny Placide could only parry Bilal El Khannouss' strike.Within four minutes, though, Haiti had restored their lead in far more spectacular fashion.Isidor pounced on a loose ball and let fly from outside the area with a shot that arrowed into the top corner.Hakimi and coach Mohamed Ouahbi were visibly angered by conceding for a second time, but the 2022 World Cup semi-finalists responded before half-time.Saibari stroked home his third goal of the tournament with a cool finish from Hakimi's low cross.With Brazil cruising to victory over Scotland in Miami, Morocco knew only a comprehensive victory would secure them top spot in Group C.Ouahbi began turning his attention to the last 32 as Bayern Munich-bound Saibari and Real Madrid's Diaz were replaced with over 20 minutes remaining.But two of his substitutes came on to win the game for Morocco. Rahimi's powerful strike from a corner flew into the top corner via a deflection off a desperate Haiti defender.He then turned provider by robbing possession on the Haiti by-line and crossing for Yassine to roll into an empty net.
