Al Sadd endured a disappointing start to their AFC Champions League Elite campaign, suffering a 3-0 defeat to Esteghlal of Iran at Basra International Stadium in Iraq on Monday, while Al Shamal were denied a famous victory by a stoppage-time equaliser in a 1-1 draw with Saudi Arabia’s Al Ittihad at Al Bayt Stadium.Jasir Asani capitalised on a defensive error to fire Esteghlal ahead in the ninth minute before Saeid Saharkhizan extended their lead two minutes after the break and Esmaeil Gholizadeh sealed the match five minutes into injury time.In a match largely dominated by the 19-time Qatar Stars League champions, Al Sadd side were let down by poor finishing, with only one shot on target and a goal overturned by VAR.Razvan Lucescu’s men made the stronger start but it was Esteghlal who struck the opening blow in the ninth minute when a wayward pass by Claudinho gifted the ball to Asani, who rounded defender Boualem Khoukhi and lashed the ball beyond Meshaal Barsham.The 2011 champions gradually regained their composure, with Roberto Firmino connecting to Hashim Ali’s cross and looping his header over the bar in the 19th minute. The Brazilian then set up Claudinho 10 minutes later but the striker fired just wide of the right post after weaving past the defence.The ever-threatening Firmino’s shot from the edge of the area in the 35th minute forced keeper Habib Abbasi into a diving save as Al Saad pushed forward in search of the equaliser only to be frustrated at the last.A counterattack by the nine-time IR Iran champions in the 42nd minute had Barsham twisting in mid-air to deny a powerful strike by Amir Mohammad Razzaghinia from the edge of the box before Firmino closed the action in the first half by heading wide of the left post.Saharkhizan gave Esteghlal the perfect start to the second half when he latched on to a through ball from Asani two minutes in, evaded a tackle from Paulo Otavio and drilled the ball through Barsham’s legs into the left corner.Al Saad thought they had reduced the scoreline in the 57th minute when Firmino struck from point-blank range but the goal was ruled out after a VAR review for a handball by Yusuf Abdurisag.Gholizadeh put the match beyond Al Saad’s reach five minutes into stoppage time when he picked up Mohammadhossein Eslami’s cross, snuck in between two defenders and booted the ball past Barsham. Wijnaldum breaks Shamal's heartsAl Shamal, meanwhile, looked set to mark their first appearance in the continental championship with a memorable victory after Baghdad Bounedjah put them ahead in the 63rd minute. However, Georginio Wijnaldum struck with virtually the last kick of the match to earn Al Ittihad a point.Al Shamal, who qualified for the AFC Champions League Elite for the first time with a runners-up finish in the QSL last season, had been forced to defend desperately in the dying moments against the 2004 and 2005 champions and Wijnaldum eventually struck.The visitors had made a positive start with Babacar Seck shovelling Dion Lopy’s early strike from outside the area to partial safety, forcing Musaab Khidir to knock the ball out for a corner while the Al Shamal goalkeeper gathered Ahmed Al Ghamdi’s weak shot soon after.It was the home side that went closest to opening the scoring in the 16th minute when Mohamed Ben Romdhane received possession inside the penalty area from Alex Collado, quickly turning to unleash a rising right-foot shot that clipped the top of the crossbar.Al Shamal hit the frame of the goal again with 12 minutes remaining in the half, Baghdad Bounedjah’s crossing from the right towards the near post from where Wesley Said threw himself at a header that thumped against the woodwork.Steve Bergwijn tested Seck from distance two minutes from the end of the half with a low shot that the Al Shamal goalkeeper was fortunate to push to safety after miss-timing his intervention.Al Shamal’s Callado was denied by Predrag Rajkovic eight minutes after the restart when the Spanish midfielder cut back onto his right foot to shoot towards goal but, by the 63rd minute,Georgin the home side had gone ahead.Bounedjah shuttled possession to Ben Romdhane and, after surging into the penalty area, the Al Shamal captain received a return pass that set him up to fire the ball beyond Rajkovic.Wijnaldum and Bergwijn both went close to pulling Al Ittihad level while Ben Romdhane had the ball in the Al Ittihad net again only for his effort to be ruled out for offside.But Wijnaldum calmly stroked in the equaliser from just inside the penalty area in the fourth minute of stoppage time after Bergiwjn’s cutback from the left side to salvage a point for Jens Wissing’s side. 

Qatar face a stern test against co-hosts Canada in their Group B World Cup clash in Vancouver on Thursday (Friday 1am Qatar time), but the two-time Asian champions are well prepared and determined to build on their opening result.Both teams opened ⁠their campaigns with draws. Julen Lopetegui’s side showed character in their 1-1 draw with Switzerland, staying in the contest under pressure before forcing a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser through Miro Muheim’s own goal. Canada were held 1-1 by Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto and will again ⁠enjoy strong home support.Qatar arrived at this tournament seeking to improve on their only previous World Cup appearance, when they hosted the 2022 edition and exited bottom of their group without a point. They have already bettered that return.**media[458645]**Group B is finely balanced, with all teams on a point after their respective openers. Victory in Vancouver would send Qatar to the top of the standings and place them in a strong position to reach the knockout stage, while anything less would leave their hopes resting on the final group match against Bosnia and Herzegovina on June 24 in Seattle."We are preparing very well for the Canada match," midfielder Karim Boudiaf said ahead of the game."We ⁠fully understand the importance of this match for us and know it will be an important stage in our tournament journey. We know very well that the match will not be easy at all. The Canada team has quality players and will be playing on their home soil and in front of their fans, which gives them extra motivation. But we also have great ambition and determination to deliver our best and achieve a positive result.”Qatar know they will have to absorb pressure against a Canada side playing on home soil, but their disciplined performance against Switzerland offers encouragement."We will enter the match with ⁠high focus and high morale. The players have a great desire to continue working with the same seriousness and discipline, and our goal is clear: to return with a positive result that gives us confidence for the remainder of the tournament," the 35-year-old Boudiaf, who plays for Al Duhail in the Qatar Stars League, said.With a squad drawn largely from their domestic league, Qatar have developed a cohesive unit that has proved formidable in Asia. Compact defending, quick transitions and moments of inspiration from Akram Afif and Almoez Ali are again expected to be central to their approach. They may not dominate possession, but they have shown they can stay organised and find a way back into matches.Qatar's all-time leading scorer Almoez Ali, who did not feature against Switzerland, expects another stern examination against Canada."Canada are a very strong team with outstanding players. They will also be playing in front of their own fans, which gives them an advantage. We have studied them closely, understand their strengths, and the coaching staff are preparing us accordingly,” he said.Canada, meanwhile, will be under pressure to make home advantage count after needing Cyle Larin’s late equaliser to avoid defeat against Bosnia and Herzegovina. The hosts have pace and physicality but Qatar will look to frustrate them by slowing the tempo and punishing any spaces left behind.Canada captain Davies unlikely for Qatar matchFor Canada, anything less than a win may feel like a missed opportunity. The status of their captain Alphonso Davies remains shrouded in secrecy, with the team remaining tight-lipped about his recovery from a hamstring injury.Davies took the field with his teammates in Tuesday’s training at the National Soccer Development Centre and took a full part in the 15 minutes of the workout that were open to media, but team officials kept their cards close to their chest about his fitness.After being told on Monday that Davies was in a return-to-play protocol, reporters gathered pitch-side were informed that defender Alfie Jones would not take part ⁠in training due to "personal recovery" with no further information offered on Davies, and none forthcoming when journalists asked.Davies became Canada's youngest senior men's international when he made his debut aged 16 against Curacao in June 2017, and since then he has scored 15 goals in 58 games for Canada, including the country's first goal at a World Cup during the 2022 tournament in Qatar.However, he has not played for the ⁠national team since tearing his anterior cruciate ligament ⁠during the CONCACAF ⁠Nations League Finals in March 2025, and he has been hampered by recurring hamstring problems since his return."Mentally, it was very draining, suffering these injuries," Davies said last week. "I was going into a hole where I was doubting myself, but I had that time off (during the injuries) and I thought about why I'm doing this, and how important this is to me."Key statsCanada have won their last four matches played in Vancouver, scoring 17 goals and conceding only two. The last team to beat them in the British Columbia city were Mexico in a March 2016 World Cup qualifier (3-0). Qatar ranked bottom of sides in Group B for shots (6), average possession (32%), forward passes (118), touches in the opposition box (8) and successful final-third passes (24) on the opening round of matches. Qatar had 32% possession, eight touches in the opposition box to Switzerland’s 42, and allowed 3.2 expected goals. And yet they managed to escape with a draw thanks to an own goal from Miro Muheim in the fourth minute of added time. This will be Canada and Qatar’s first meeting at a World Cup. Their only previous encounter ever came in a September 2022 friendly in Vienna – Canada won 2-0 through goals from Larin and Jonathan David. 

Defending champions Al Ahli struck twice in eight second-half minutes to come from behind to defeat Japan’s Vissel Kobe 2-1 and seal their place in a second successive Asian Champions League Elite final. Brazil winger Galeno cancelled out Yoshinori Muto’s first-half opener before Ivan Toney completed the comeback in front of 44,716 people at King Abdullah Sports City Stadium. Kobe, winners of the J1 League title in 2023 and 2024, took the lead on the half hour, when the Al Ahli defence were caught napping at a free-kick. Beating the Saudi side’s high line, an unmarked Yuya Osako headed the ball across the Ahli penalty area to Muto, who slotted home past former Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy. In first-half stoppage-time, Rayan Hamed headed a Galeno free-kick onto the Kobe upright before Toney dragged a shot wide. Ahli, who 12 months ago defeated Japan’s Kawasaki Frontale in the final to capture a first continental crown, spurned another golden opportunity at the start of the second half when Brazil international Roger Ibanez headed across goal when free. At the other end, Daiju Sasaki struck the Ahli crossbar. However, Ahli levelled on 62 minutes. Galeno, scorer of a spectacular winner in the quarter-final win against Malaysia’s Johor Darul Ta’zim, struck another superb effort from range that flew high into the Kobe goal. Ahli edged ahead eight minutes later, Toney making the most of goalkeeper Daiya Maekawa’s failure to deal with a cross by side-footing home from the angle. The Englishman, the current top scorer in the Saudi Pro League, climbed to two goals for the tournament. Ahli were then denied a third through Riyad Mahrez, with the former Manchester City star’s 75th-minute finish ruled out for offside following a VAR review. But it mattered little as Ahli held on for the victory. They will now face either Japan’s Machida Zelvia or 2015 runners-up Shabab Al Ahli of the UAE, who meet in the other semi-final Tuesday. The final takes place on Saturday at King Abdullah Sports City Stadium. For the second year running, Jeddah is staging the eight-team centralised finals series of the continent’s premier football competition, rebranded last year as the Asian Champions League Elite. 

A stoppage-time own goal led hosts Qatar to a shock 1-0 defeat against Palestine in their FIFA Arab Cup 2025 opener at Al Bayt Stadium Monday.The reigning Asian Champions were left stunned in the dying seconds of the match when Qatar defender Sultan Al-Brake inadvertently deflected a cross into his own net, handing Palestine a historic three points in Group A.For the majority of the encounter, the match was a tightly contested affair. Despite controlling possession, Qatar struggled to break down a disciplined Palestinian defence. The home crowd grew increasingly frustrated as the clock ticked down, with both sides unable to find a breakthrough in regulation time.Just as a goalless draw seemed inevitable, disaster struck for the hosts. A looping cross from outside the box took a wicked deflection off Al-Brake, wrong-footing the defence and silencing the thousands of Al Annabi fans in attendance.The final whistle sparked jubilant scenes on the Palestinian bench. Head coach Ehab Abu Jazar celebrated wildly as his side secured a famous victory against one of the tournament favourites. Speaking after the match, an emotional Abu Jazar hailed the result as a monumental achievement for his team."I thank Allah. It is a historic day. It is a great day," Abu Jazar said after the match. "We snatched a precious victory against a strong Qatari national team who are the Asian champions."The coach dedicated the win to the supporters back home. "Congratulations to all the players and to our fans. We dedicate the victory to our people, the martyrs, the wounded, and the prisoners back home," he said. In another match Monday, a stunning second-half free-kick from Omar Khribin earned Syria a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Tunisia in their FIFA Arab Cup 2025 Group A clash at Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium. In a match defined by physical battles and tactical discipline, it was Khribin’s moment of individual brilliance that separated the two sides.Today, Oman face Saudi Arabia at Education City Stadium, Egypt take on Kuwait at Lusail Stadium while Morocco face Comoros at Khalifa International Stadium.
