The Art Mill Museum has launched a public call inviting people in Qatar and around the world to reflect on one of humanity's most universal questions: “What does home mean to you?”The open call, titled "What Does Home Mean to You?” encourages participants to share personal stories and creative works that explore the idea of home beyond its physical definition.Through videos, written reflections, photographs, drawings and other visual media, contributors are invited to capture the memories, relationships, identities and emotions that shape their sense of belonging.The initiative gains particular significance as the museum prepares to bring its acclaimed "My Home is Your Home" exhibition to Doha in autumn 2026.A curated selection of submissions will be presented digitally within the exhibition's learning space, allowing visitors to encounter diverse perspectives from people in Qatar and across the globe while fostering dialogue on identity, culture and shared human experience.Selected contributions will also become part of an evolving online publication and digital archive, ensuring the conversation continues beyond the exhibition and remains accessible to wider audiences.Originally launched in October 2025 alongside the “My Home is Your Home” exhibition at the Qatar Pavilion during the Venice Architecture Biennale, the initiative invited participants to reflect on the meaning of home in a rapidly changing world.Since then, the Art Mill Museum's Learning and Public Engagement team has been building a growing digital archive of stories that reveal how the concept of home varies across cultures, generations and lived experiences.The museum said the project is rooted in the belief that home is deeply personal.For some, it is a place or a homeland; for others, it is defined by family, memories, friendships or a feeling of comfort and security.Bringing together these diverse narratives creates a collective portrait that celebrates both the richness of individual experiences and the values shared across communities.Creative submissions will be accepted until September 30, with the museum encouraging artists, writers, photographers and members of the public of all ages to take part in the cultural initiative.The project forms part of the Art Mill Museum's broader vision of placing public participation at the heart of cultural storytelling as it progresses towards its official opening in 2030.Developed by Qatar Museums on Doha's Corniche, the future Art Mill Museum will transform the historic flour mill site into a major international centre for modern and contemporary art.Designed by Chilean architecture firm Elemental, led by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Alejandro Aravena, the museum will anchor Doha's cultural corridor alongside the Museum of Islamic Art and the National Museum of Qatar, offering expansive exhibition galleries, public gardens and creative spaces dedicated to artistic innovation and cross-cultural exchange. 

Qatar’s forthcoming Art Mill Museum is being developed as a museum for a new generation, introducing a fresh approach to the collection, presentation, and understanding of modern and contemporary art and cultures.  The museum is being developed by Qatar Museums (QM) on the site of a former industrial flour mill along the Corniche. Its location will place it within a cultural triangle alongside the Museum of Islamic Art and the National Museum of Qatar, adding a new institution dedicated to international modern and contemporary art.  Catherine Grenier, Art Mill Museum Director of Concept, said the institution is being shaped around the need for a different museum model, one that responds to Qatar’s identity while engaging with audiences and artistic practices from across the world.  **media[475033]** “The Art Mill Museum is a museum of modern and contemporary art and cultures based on a brand-new concept,” Grenier said in a reel posted on the museum’s official social media pages recently.  “This museum is very special because it will be in a non-Western part of the world and also [the] project is based on the fact that we need a new model.”At the heart of the project is the ambition to create a museum that is rooted in its local context while looking firmly towards the future. Instead of following established Western museum frameworks, the Art Mill Museum aims to present modern and contemporary art from all regions of the world on equal footing through multiple narratives of art history.  Grenier said that “the definition of the museum is linked with the identity of Qatar, rooted in tradition but very innovative and linked with the vanguard of the 21st century.”  She noted that the concept has been developed through collaboration with people in Qatar and museum professionals from around the world, ensuring the institution responds to the changing expectations of future audiences.  “We are to invent model and this is something that we did with the people in Qatar and also with a lot of colleagues from different parts of the world to understand what would be a museum for the new generation, a museum for tomorrow.”  **media[475034]** The Art Mill Museum will house exceptional collections built over the past 40 years, featuring multidisciplinary works dating from 1850 to the present. Alongside painting, sculpture and photography, the museum will present architecture and design, films and film props, fashion, crafts and other creative disciplines.  This multidisciplinary approach is intended to encourage new ways of engaging with art and culture while creating connections among different artistic practices, histories, and communities.  As a pioneering institution in the non-Western world, the museum will engage local and international audiences alike, broadening perspectives on modern and contemporary art through inclusive and globally representative narratives, according to Qatar Museums.  The museum’s architecture will also reflect its forward-looking vision. In 2016, an international architecture competition awarded the project to the Chilean studio Elemental, led by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Alejandro Aravena. The redevelopment will repurpose the historic industrial flour mill into a cultural destination while preserving the site’s distinctive character.  The wider campus will include a public garden designed by VOGT Landscape Architects, led by Gunther Vogt, creating new green spaces along Doha’s waterfront. A creative village will also form part of the development, providing opportunities for artistic production, collaboration and public engagement beyond the museum galleries.
