Kimi Antonelli showed relief and satisfaction on Sunday after taking full advantage of Mercedes team-mate George Russell's misfortunes to extend his lead in the drivers' championship with a calm win in the Belgian Grand Prix.His victory ended a three-race winless streak and lifted the Italian 50 points clear of the luckless Russell, who slipped to third in the title race after colliding with seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton on the opening lap."It feels very nice to be back on the top step after a few difficult races," said the 19-year-old Antonelli."It was a hard-fought race. We lost first place with the virtual safety car and then we managed to make our way back -- and it was a tough win because Charles was quick and we had to hold on to that."I think the momentum was always there, so it was just about getting the result."Hamilton survived his clash with Russell to finish fourth on track behind second-placed Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc and four-time champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull.The Briton climbed to second in the championship, 45 behind Antonelli.Antonelli admitted he had been fortunate to score maximum points on a day when Russell was forced to retire again."We were a bit lucky with what happened, in terms of the championship, but that is why you have to take every opportunity -- because we saw that it can really swing the situation."Now, we just have to keep performing, keep bringing the results and then we will see what will happens at the end of the year."After reliability problems in Spain and Britain deprived him of any points, Antonelli had to stay calm under instruction from Mercedes to come home 1.9 seconds ahead of Leclerc.He recovered from losing his lead, after a good start from his pole position, during a virtual safety car intervention that favoured Ferrari and others.'STRUGGLING'Leclerc, who won the last race at Siverstone, fought hard to stay in contention and took a second place which leaves him fourht in the title race, 78 points behind Antonelli."I believed in the win until the end. We had a little bit of luck with the VSC at the right time for us, but the pace was relatively strong."There were five or six laps, on the hards, where I was struggling with the front axle and then it came back a little bit."I felt better with the car. There's still some work to do, but it's a step forward."Verstappen said he and Antonelli had been unlucky with the VSC that gave Ferrari and others a 'cheap stop' in the race."I tried everything I could in the race," he said."The first stint was not too bad, the second stint probably a bit more difficult. But at the same time, I think Kimi and I, we got a little bit unlucky with the virtual safety car."For us, to be on the podium is good. I gave it everything I had, so actually P3 is good." 

Italian teenager Kimi Antonelli ended a three-race winless streak on Sunday to extend his lead in the Formula One drivers' championship with a solid fighting victory for Mercedes in the Belgian Grand Prix.The 19-year-old Mercedes driver came home 1.9 seconds ahead of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc with four-time champion Max Verstappen finishing third for Red Bull. Antonelli's teammate George Russell, who began the race in second place in the championship, just 25 points behind the Italian, crashed out of the race on the opening lap after tangling with Hamilton.Hamilton was fourth for Ferrari after an incident-filled race in which he almost hit a mechanic during a pit-stop. The incident was referred to the stewards leaving the seven-time world champion with the possibility of a further penalty.Isack Hadjar, who began at the back of the grid, did superbly to work his Red Bull up to sixth, just holding off reigning world champion Lando Norris, who started 13th, in the second McLaren.Gabriel Bortoleto (Audi), Arvid Lindblad (Racing Bulls) and Franco Colapinto (Alpine) rounded out the top 10.It was Antonelli's sixth win of the season and came from his sixth pole of the year, the first driver to win from pole in Belgium since 2021.It lifts him to 204 points in the championship, 45 clear of Hamilton with Russell third on 154."It feels very nice to be back on the top step," said Antonelli."We just have to keep performing, keep bringing the results and then we will see what will happen at the end of the year."The race started in cool conditions under a grey sky with rain in the air as Antonelli made a good start to lead up to La Source, but he had no answer when Verstappen deployed his power pack to pass him through Eau Rouge.The Dutchman was then immediately vulnerable to a counter-attack and both the Italian and Leclerc drafted past him into Les Combes where behind them Hamilton clashed with Russell. 'Racing incident'The four-time champion continued in fifth, but Russell bounced off into retirement as a Safety Car (SC) was deployed.Hamilton reported that he "had no front end" control as a result of a car ahead moving across him and the incident was investigated by the stewards who gave Hamilton a five-second penalty.A downcast Russell, whose title bid had taken a heavy blow, said: "It was a racing incident, but it shouldn't have happened if I'd had the speed down the straight."Racing resumed on lap five with Piastri fighting and resisting Hamilton before Verstappen swept past Leclerc for second. Piastri then chased Leclerc and they touched at Les Combes, where the Monegasque defended and the Australian lost a piece of front wing end plate.The stewards investigated again, but took 'no further action' while Hamilton advanced and passed Piastri for fourth on lap nine as the race settled after a frantic start with Antonelli two seconds clear of Verstappen at the front ahead of both Ferraris.Further Virtual Safety Cars (VSC) intervened and on lap 20, Ferrari went for a 'double-stack'. Leclerc went through cleanly but Hamilton, who had to serve his five-second penalty, made a messy exit touching a mechanic on exit.The mechanic was reported to be fine but the stewards decided to investigate again for an unsafe release.That left Norris, who had started 13th with a 10-place grid penalty, for taking a new battery, leading ahead of Leclerc, Antonelli and Verstappen until the Ferrari cruised by to take command on lap 23.Antonelli swept past Norris three laps later and surged after Leclerc while Hamilton, who had requested a wing adjustment in vain during his pit-stop, fell back to sixth.Norris finally pitted to swap his old hards for mediums on lap 31, rejoining eighth after a slow stop due to a sticky left rear, Hadjar rising to sixth behind Hamilton.Leclerc led until lap 34 when, as he feared, Antonelli's superior power carried him through at Les Combes.But he hung on tight, within a second of the silver arrow, while Hamilton passed Piastri for fourth with five laps to go.

Championship leader Kimi Antonelli roared to pole position for Mercedes on Saturday when he beat Red Bull's four-time champion Max Verstappen in the final seconds of Belgian Grand Prix qualifying.The 19-year-old Italian clocked a superbly-executed best lap in one minute and 44.361 seconds to outpace the Dutchman by 0.317sec with defending champion Lando Norris third for McLaren.Norris has a 10-place grid penalty for Sunday's race after taking a new engine.It was Antonelli's sixth pole this year and extended Mercedes run to 10 consecutive poles this season. His success came with the biggest pole-winning margin of the season. "Let's go man," cried Antonelli on team radio. "Let's go!"Reminded it was his father Marco's birthday, he added: "Happy birthday, Dad."In his on-track interview, the Italian said he was happy with his display."The last lap was good. It was a nice lap. It was very clean, so very happy," he said."Tomorrow is another day, with Max starting next to me it will be important to get a good start and be ahead into Turn 5."George Russell was fourth for Mercedes ahead of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton, who had crashed earlier in the day, with Oscar Piastri seventh in the second McLaren.Racing Bull's' rookie Arvid Lindblad was eighth ahead of Audi's Gabriel Bortoleto and Isack Hadjar, in the second Red Bull, who also faces a penalty and will start from the back of the grid.Verstappen admitted that his pace, to secure a front-row spot, was down to assistance he received from team-mate Hadjar offering a slip-steaming 'tow' on his laps."I wouldn't be here without that," the Dutchman said."It was a definite help for me. If not, I would be like P6. Today, knowing he is to start at the back of the grid, Isack did a really good job giving me a tow."Bottas was first out in Q1 for Cadillac in continued dry conditions as the rest filed out in pursuit, including Hamilton who had smacked the barriers in his Ferrari at the end of final free practice.Verstappen was the first front-runner to go for a push lap in 1:45.930, an impressive start and beyond Antonelli's immediate riposte as Lindblad and Hadjar went second before Norris took control in 1:45.865.The fastest three sat out the second runs, when Hamilton rose to fourth in his Ferrari 'rebuild'.The two Aston Martins, both Cadillacs and Esteban Ocon of Haas and Williams' Alex Albon were eliminated.The second qualifying session began with Franco Colapinto leading out, but once the flying laps began, Antonelli again showed real pace.The session ended with Liam Lawson of Racing Bulls, both Alpines, Audi's Nico Hulkenberg, who suffered an hydraulics leak, Williams' Carlos Sainz and Oliver Bearman of Haas all eliminated.Impressive rookie Lindblad went through to Q3 in sixth in his upgraded Racing Bulls car, ahead of Piastri and Russell.  

World championship leader Kimi Antonelli topped the times for Mercedes ahead of defending champion Lando Norris of McLaren in Friday's second free practice ahead of this weekend's Belgian Grand Prix.The 19-year-old Italian clocked a best lap time of one minute and 45.944 seconds to outpace Norris, who has a 10-place grid penalty for Sunday's race after taking a new battery, by 0.190 seconds with Max Verstappen third for Red Bull.The four-time champion was 0.472 seconds adrift after a much-improved day using the team's traditional rear wing after ditching the much-criticised 'Macarena' wing, described by Verstappen as very dangerous.He had crashed at both the Austrian and British Grands Prix, but bounced back to go fastest in the earlier opening session on Friday.Seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton was fourth for Ferrari ahead of Isack Hadjar in the second Red Bull, Oscar Piastri in the second McLaren and Franco Colapinto who was seventh for Alpine.This left George Russell down in eighth in the second Mercedes, more than 1.2 seconds behind Antonelli, ahead of Racing Bulls' rookie Arvid Lindblad and Liam Lawson, the pair pushing Charles Leclerc down to 11th in the second Ferrari.The session ended after an extended red-flag interruption after Pierre Gasly crashed into the barriers in his Alpine. He was unhurt.After a light shower between the sessions, the action began with Antonelli setting the pace in 1:46.911 with Verstappen chasing his time before a brief red flag delay to clear gravel from the track. SHOWING SOME FRUSTRATIONThe Dutchman, showing some frustration, grumbled colourfully about his gearbox.On resumption, several drivers swapped mediums for softs as Piastri joined the fray, after repairs for a hydraulics problem, in a spell of qualifying simulation laps.Hadjar swiftly went top on softs before Verstappen and then Antonelli regained the initiative, the Italian clocking 1:45.944 to soar nearly five-tenths clear.Ferrari responded with both drivers setting personal-best times in the first and second parts of the lap, but Hamilton wound up third behind Verstappen and ahead of Hadjar. He was 0.747 adrift of Antonelli.Russell, 25 points behind his 'silver arrows' team-mate in the drivers' title race, tried a lap on softs, but was 1.285 seconds slower than the flying Italian as he settled for sixth.Like Russell, Piastri was struggling to match his team-mate as Norris went second in 1:46.134, two-tenths off the pace. The Australian, last year's winner, went sixth, but was 0.982 adrift.With 15 minutes remaining, the action was red-flagged when Gasly lost control of his Alpine and brushed the barriers at the Fagnes chicane. He was unhurt and walked away from his damaged car, which had lost its rear wing.The action was suspended for 13 minutes allowing the teams only two minutes' action at the end of the session to complete their programme and engage in a few practice starts on the uphill grid.  

Kimi Antonelli needs a win in Belgium this ‌weekend to pump up his Formula One championship lead after two blanks in the ​last three races, but Ferrari ‌could stand in his way.The 19-year-old Mercedes driver also failed to score a ‌point at Spa-Francorchamps ⁠last year, although he ‌did set the fastest lap of the ‌race, but should be far more competitive this time - providing his car holds up.Antonelli has ⁠seen his advantage shrink from 66 points over Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton after Monaco in June to 25 points over teammate George Russell, who has had his own share of bad luck, due to mechanical problems.At the same time, seven times world champion Hamilton and teammate Charles Leclerc have celebrated wins for a resurgent and increasingly competitive Ferrari, now looking for a third win in four races. HAMILTON CAN EQUAL SCHUMACHER'S RECORD Both are also previous winners at ​Spa, with Hamilton chasing a sixth Belgian triumph to equal the record held by former Ferrari great Michael Schumacher.Throw in the threat of Red Bull's four times champion Max Verstappen at a favourite and almost ‌home track, as well as McLaren's ⁠Lando Norris and Oscar ​Piastri, and Mercedes have plenty on their plate."The last few races have underlined ​both where our strengths are and where we need to improve," said Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff."Reliability issues have cost us points and in a championship this competitive, that is something we cannot afford. There is no value in having the pace if we don't bring home the result."We have left too much on the table recently. We need to make sure that doesn't happen again, starting this weekend."Like Silverstone, Spa will involve more energy management than drivers would like but fans should still see exciting racing and overtaking opportunities at a popular circuit with even longer straights than Britain."I think it could ‌be trickier with the energy management ‌limitations on the straights but we ⁠have historically done well here so you never know what will happen," said Verstappen. 'ONE OF THE ⁠MOST CHALLENGING RACES' Spa is also one ⁠of the most fickle tracks, as well as one of the fastest, with the Ardennes forests having a micro-climate that defies long-range forecasts.Current predictions are cloudy and cool, with some sunshine, but showers can never be ruled out. Ferrari boss Fred Vasseur said it could be "a particularly demanding weekend"."It is one of the most challenging races of the year because of the characteristics of the ​track and the way the weather can change from one moment to the next in the Ardennes," he added.Piastri won last year, after Norris took pole, and the champions will be testing and assessing a new rear wing in Friday practice."We're confident that this update will add a bit of performance to our car," said Neil Houldey, technical director for applied engineering."But we are fully aware that after a difficult British Grand Prix, mainly in terms of pure performance, even this round won’t be that easy, so we won’t be expecting any big change in ‌terms of competitiveness."McLaren will ​also have the latest specification Mercedes engine that the works team had in Austria and Williams and Alpine at Silverstone. 

Formula One leader Kimi Antonelli was too fast for Ferrari, and dealt another stinging blow to Mercedes teammate George Russell, as the Italian seized pole position for the British Grand Prix on Saturday after winning an earlier sprint race.His closest title ⁠rival Russell qualified only fourth at a windy Silverstone, behind Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and seven-times world champion Lewis Hamilton.Leclerc was 0.175 of a second slower than the 19-year-old, whose ⁠fifth pole of the season extended Mercedes's record of securing the top slot at all nine grands prix so far in the campaign, but ahead of Hamilton for the first time since Miami in May."It was a very tidy lap, a lap where I put everything together," said Antonelli, of his best time of one minute 28.111 seconds set after going out first for the final run on the fast, sweeping circuit."It was very tricky with the wind because it was very gusty and unpredictable."LECLERC BACK AHEAD OF HAMILTONAntonelli won the 17-lap sprint ahead of Hamilton, a record nine-times winner at Silverstone in a career that started in 2007, to go 43 points clear of Briton Russell in the standings.Winner of five races in a row until ⁠Hamilton ended the streak in Spain last month, Antonelli has taken the sport by storm in his second season and appeared to have the measure of the experienced Russell in front of what is sure to be the biggest crowd of the year."It's not going to be easy because I have two Ferraris behind me and, for sure, they will work together," Antonelli said of the challenge he will face on Sunday."Their pace is good but ours was strong in the Sprint. Hopefully we can keep that for tomorrow and do a good race."Leclerc said it was good to get back to speed on a Saturday."It has been a few tough races when the feeling was not quite right, struggling to put everything together," he said."There has been so much work behind the scenes to get back that feeling. This was the first time I ⁠had it back, I have struggled to be consistent but it is a good start."Isack Hadjar qualified fifth ⁠for Red Bull, ahead of McLaren's reigning ⁠world champion and last year's winner Lando Norris.Red Bull's four-times world champion Max Verstappen will line up seventh, with McLaren's Oscar Piastri eighth and the Racing Bulls pair of rookie Arvid Lindblad -- on his home debut -- and Liam Lawson completing the top 10 places.Russell, who started the season as title favourite, had a torrid afternoon -- smashing his car's front wing when he speared wide across the gravel on the entry to Luffield and into the barriers in the first phase of qualifying.He returned to the pits for a front wing change and managed to salvage the session, which saw Hadjar go fastest."That was very weird. I've never locked up there in my whole career," said Russell of the incident.The Briton was a provisional second after the first round of flying laps in the final session but could not improve his time as the Ferraris went faster, his hopes of a first home Formula One win now looking more distant.Alpine's Franco Colapinto also lost control in the first phase, the Argentine's car bouncing backwards across the grass after a high-speed spin at Becketts.There was then a 15-minute delay between Q1 and Q2 as marshals cleared up the track and scattered gravel.    

Kimi Antonelli blasted past home favourite Lewis Hamilton to take a first career sprint win at the British Grand Prix on Saturday and forge 43 points clear of Mercedes teammate George Russell in the Formula One standings.Ferrari's Hamilton started on pole but the ⁠seven times world champion had to settle for second place, 2.7 seconds behind, after Antonelli used the Overtake Mode to speed past on Hangar Straight - ⁠a move he made look as easy as lapping a backmarker - on the eighth of 17 laps.In free air, Antonelli pulled away and raced to the finish untroubled, with nothing Hamilton could do about it in the time remaining."In control all the way," said Antonelli's race engineer Peter 'Bono' Bonnington over the team radio at the chequered flag as Antonelli became also the youngest ever sprint winner at 19 years old. NORRIS HOLDS OFF RUSSELL FOR THIRD McLaren's world champion Lando Norris finished third after starting from sixth place, making a lightning getaway and then holding off a late challenge from Russell.Russell, who started the season as title favourite but ⁠has been eclipsed by his teammate as Antonelli racked up a stunning five wins in a row, finished fourth at a blustery Silverstone."Tough race to keep the Mercedes behind," said Hamilton after saluting the crowd."I did say that was potentially the case yesterday and obviously with it being so windy today, a big, big headwind down the backstraight, he came flying past."Saturday was the fourth sprint race of the season and Hamilton the first driver this year not to convert pole into victory in the 100km format.With a maximum eight points for a sprint win, Antonelli now has 179 points to Russell's 136 with seven times world champion Hamilton on 132."It was a very fun first 10 laps with Lewis. We were ⁠both pushing very hard," said Antonelli, who had missed out on pole by a mere ⁠0.011 of a second and challenged ⁠Hamilton for the lead when they went side by side at the first corner."Out of Turn Four I was very close, so I went alongside into Brooklands but he used the boost, so I decided to wait. Going into Stowe I used everything I had, then I was able to overtake."Norris got ahead of Antonelli on the opening lap but the move was short-lived with the Italian taking the place back and then waiting for the right moment to take Hamilton."A good race and good fighting, especially the first few laps with the Red Bull and with Mercedes," said Norris, who had appeared to be unhappy with his team over the radio at one point when he urged them to "get it right for once".Ferrari's Charles Leclerc was fifth and Red Bull's four times world champion Max Verstappen sixth after qualifying third.McLaren's Oscar Piastri was seventh and Racing Bulls' Liam Lawson took the final point in eighth Qualifying for Sunday's main grand prix, the ninth round of the season, followed later.   

Formula One championship leader Kimi Antonelli was fastest in Friday practice for the Austrian Grand Prix as Mercedes sought to bounce back from their first defeat of the season.The 19-year-old Italian, winner of five races in a row ‌until he retired in Spain this month and Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton ended the dominant ​streak, was 0.040 quicker than ‌teammate George Russell in session one and then 0.237 faster than McLaren's Oscar ‌Piastri in the ⁠second.Piastri was consistently quick, ‌third in a scorching first practice session ‌with conditions declared a heat hazard, but Russell dropped to sixth at the end of a ⁠day after a disrupted second practice."We knew Mercedes would be a step ahead, and that’s how it played out, but it was productive for us," said Piastri.Red Bull's four-times world champion Max Verstappen was fourth in both practices for his team's home race, with Hamilton also fifth in both.McLaren's world champion Lando Norris, last year's winner at the Red Bull Ring, was seventh in the early session but third in the later afternoon when McLaren looked to ​be Mercedes's closest challengers."This track seems to suit us as we’ve seen in the last few years and that’s a good trend for the weekend ahead," said Norris.Russell said first practice had been strong for ‌Mercedes but McLaren and Red Bull ⁠had been quick in ​the second."It was a real surprise to see the first lap of the ​McLarens in P2, just right at the top, and their race pace especially on Lando's side looked a bit better than us," he added.Antonelli leads Hamilton by 41 points in the standings after seven rounds.EARLY ISSUES FOR MCLAREN AND RED BULLRed Bull had a difficult start to the day with Verstappen suffering issues with his upgraded car while teammate Isack Hadjar's car needed a hurried engine change and he missed the first 35 minutes.Four-time world champion Verstappen complained that "the whole car is shaking under braking"."At first we had an engine issue on Isack's car before the beginning of the session, so we had to do ‌a very late call to change ‌his engine," said team boss Laurent Mekies."And ⁠then on Max, we also had a troubled start with a couple of software issues that ⁠got us stuck in the garage."Norris remained ⁠in the garage for the first 45 minutes as McLaren wrestled with a hydraulics problem while Piastri complained about his car's brakes.Ferrari had F2 driver Dino Beganovic in Charles Leclerc's car for the opening session, clocking the ninth best time, with the Monegasque returning for the later hour and going eighth fastest."I’d say it was a solid but challenging start to the weekend, with the high ​temperatures making an already demanding circuit even tougher," said Hamilton."We’ve definitely got some work to do to find the right setup and balance and unlock some performance."Sergio Perez's Cadillac brought out red flags with just over a minute remaining after the Mexican stopped on the uphill climb, with the session then ended prematurely and no drivers able to do any practice starts.The Cadillac of Valtteri Bottas caught fire in session two after limping back to the pits with a damaged suspension and the car's floor sparking off the asphalt.Japanese driver Ryo Hirakawa replaced Esteban Ocon at ‌Haas for the session ​and knocked over one of the team mechanics when he overshot his pit box, fortunately without injury. 

Formula One could take another twist in Austria this weekend after Lewis Hamilton ended Mercedes' dominant run with his breakthrough first win for Ferrari in Spain.The scenic Spielberg circuit hosts the eighth round of the season with ⁠Mercedes the favourites on paper after six wins - five in a row for Italian teenager and championship leader Kimi Antonelli - and seven pole positions so far.Mercedes boast a ⁠good record at Spielberg and George Russell won there in 2024 but seven-time champion Hamilton has now had two second places and a win from his last three starts and is gathering momentum. McLaren's reigning champion Lando Norris won from pole last year, with Australian teammate Oscar Piastri setting the fastest lap, and the team is the most successful constructor at the track with seven wins.A first win of 2026 would send McLaren to their home British Grand Prix at Silverstone next week with an added spring in their step.Red Bull's Max Verstappen meanwhile has a record four wins at his team's home track while Hamilton's teammate Charles Leclerc is also a past winner at Spielberg (2022), and was third last year, and is ⁠as keen as anyone to get back on top of the podium.Throw in Antonelli's response to being sidelined by mechanical failure at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, and Russell's eagerness to close the gap on his teammate, and Sunday's race has all the makings of an epic tussle."It's not going to be straightforward but I'm already looking forward to the next one because I really want to go back to where we left (off), from where we were finishing before," said Antonelli after his Spanish blow.The 19-year-old is 41 points ahead of closest rival Hamilton, whose teammate Leclerc also failed to score in Barcelona through no fault of his own and needs to close a widening gap to the Briton. Another win for either Hamilton or Leclerc would be Ferrari's 250th in Formula One.Mercedes have recognised the ⁠Ferrari threat, with team boss Toto Wolff calling Barcelona a reality check and acknowledging that the team ⁠may have to change their approach ⁠in future amid ongoing reliability concerns."Others have gained ground quickly and we need to respond," said the Austrian, whose team will bring some updates to Austria with a focus on performance and reliability."We are in a fight for both championships but must improve if we want to come out on top come the end of the season. Our Achilles heel so far has been reliability."Wolff said in Barcelona there would also be discussions with the drivers about handling "a situation where we risk holding each other up. I think it's not going to be a problem. It's just maybe we need to recalibrate."Champions McLaren will be bringing an experimental rear wing for Friday practice, with otherwise minor updates.Norris took his first F1 podium in Austria in 2020 and, after looking like Mercedes' closest challengers in Miami last month when he and Piastri finished one-two in a Saturday sprint, could pose more of a threat again in Spielberg."While we take nothing for granted in such a tight field, we are optimistic that the car and driver characteristics will again suit the circuit, putting us in the fight at the front," said McLaren's applied engineering technical director Neil Houldey.

Teenager Kimi Antonelli extended his lead in the drivers' world championship with a commanding and nerveless victory for Mercedes ahead of Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton in a protracted, incident-hit Monaco Grand Prix Sunday.It was the 19-year-old Italian's record fifth consecutive victory this season, making him the first Italian to achieve that feat since Alberto Ascari in 1952. It hoisted him 66 points clear of Hamilton in the title race."The car was a peach today," he said after becoming the youngest winner of Formula One's classic blue riband event."An incredible day - one of those when we had incredible pace to give me confidence to push."In a stoppage-strewn race punctuated by crashes, retirements and a series of penalties, Antonelli came home 6.271 seconds clear of seven-time champion Hamilton with Red Bull's Isack Hadjar third ahead of Oscar Piastri of McLaren.Racing Bulls' Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad finished a career-best fifth and sixth respectively, while Sergio Perez in 10th scored the new Cadillac team's first point.Hamilton equalled Ayrton Senna's record total of eight Monaco podiums.Four-time champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull suffered an engine failure at the start and retired, as did world champion Lando Norris when his McLaren had battery problems.Antonelli made a perfect getaway. Behind him, Verstappen had a power failure as he attempted to start."What can I do?" asked Verstappen. "Just bring it home," came the Red Bull reply. His problem was diagnosed as engine failure. It was his eighth first-lap retirement.For Antonelli, the youngest-ever pole sitter in Monaco, his dream start enabled a run in clear air to establish a lead of 5.4 seconds by lap 10.Norris had a lap one setback when, after squabbling with Piastri for sixth, he was passed by Pierre Gasly on the outside of St Devote.In the first round of pit stops, Hamilton was one of several drivers given a five-second penalty for speeding in the pit-lane.After revelling in his supremacy, Antonelli came in a second time after 37 laps, easily retaining his lead before Norris's problems ended with a call to retire on lap 46.The young Italian was racing with such ease that race engineer Peter Bonington told him: "Kimi, fastest lap! No, we don't need them."'No rear brakes'On lap 60, Lance Stroll smacked the barriers at Antony Noghes to prompt a safety car.The race re-started on lap 66 and, as Antonelli pulled clear with Hamilton in pursuit, the luckless Leclerc crashed at the same spot."I'm not taking the blame for that," he said. "It's like I had no rear brakes at all."That lifted Hadjar into third place before a second red flag suspended the action, with the field called back to wait in the pit lane as the track was repaired and Russell was given a drive-through penalty for failing to serve an earlier time penalty correctly.After a 40-minute hiatus, the action resumed from a standing start.Antonelli held his nerve to lead again with Hamilton second ahead of Russell, who promptly pitted for his penalty and fell to 14th. 

World championship leading teenager Kimi Antonelli continued his remarkable run of successes on Saturday by claiming pole position for Mercedes ahead of four-time champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull for Sunday's Monaco Grand Prix.The 19-year-old Italian clocked one minute and 12.051 seconds to beat the Dutchman by 0.043 seconds in the final minute of a thrilling qualifying session that left both Ferraris on the second row of the grid.After four wins, Antonelli will be seeking to become the first Italian to win five consecutive races since Alberto Ascari achieved the feat for Ferrari in 1952 after extending Mercedes' run to six successive poles this year.Antonelli said he had produced "a magic lap"."It was so close with Max!" he said after securing his fourth pole of the season.Seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton was third ahead of Charles Leclerc, Isack Hadjar in the second Red Bull and Mercedes' George Russell, who is 43 points behind Antonelli in the drivers' title race.McLaren's Oscar Piastri outpaced team-mate and world champion Lando Norris to qualifying seventh.Antonelli's pole was the first by a Mercedes driver since Hamilton in 2019 and he became the first Italian to take pole in Monaco since Jarno Trulli in 2004.The session began in warm sunshine with a long queue weaving out of the pits to warm their tyres in preparation for a flying lap, albeit in heavy traffic.An early radio call from Hamilton to complain Leclerc was "backing into me" reflected the tension in the cockpits before Hadjar vented to his frustrations.Leclerc topped the early runs ahead of Norris and Hamilton while Russell toiled for a clean lap before Gabriel Bortoleto clipped a barrier at the chicane and came to a halt, causing a six-minute red flag stoppage.This left most drivers chasing a lap in the final seconds of Q1 while the main contenders stayed in the pits.Leclerc led the way into Q2 ahead of Verstappen and Antonelli while a lap from Sainz, in the added time, saw him claim 10th and avoid an early exit. Alonso outburst  Out instead went the two Cadillacs, both Haas drivers and both Aston Martins, with two-time champion Fernando Alonso, 21st, making clear his distaste for the new 'hybrid era' cars."The worst generation of cars I have driven in Monaco,"he said."Hybrid cars should not be racing. Simple as that."After 21 previous appearances, including two wins and two poles, Alonso, at 44, is the most experienced Monaco driver on the grid.Verstappen led out for Q2, narrowly avoiding a pit-lane clash with Sainz before the precocious Antonelli set the pace in 1:12.778 ahead of Verstappen until Leclerc moved within 0.070 seconds of him.It was tight and changeable at the top as Red Bull burst into the frame, Verstappen going fastest in 1:12.499 to beat Antonelli by 0.205 with Hadjar third 0.223 adrift ahead of the Ferraris and McLarens.This time, both Williams and both Audis were eliminated along with Alpine's Franco Colapinto Racing Bulls' rookie Arvid Lindblad.Liam Lawson of Racing Bulls and Alpine's Pierre Gasly made the top ten shootout.The final ten had another chance to compose a perfect pole lap.Leclerc bailed out of his first flying run, but hit the sweet spot on his second to clock 1:12.351 and snatch provisional pole.In a sensational sequence, the celebrating Monegasque crowd were silenced as Verstappen clocked 1:12.094 before, Antonelli blew that away as the tension erupted in Italian euphoria around the Monte Carlo harbour.
