Despite enduring a torrid start to the season, Real Madrid's Vinicius Jr can still make a difference even when he is off his game and will return to his best form in time, Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti said on Tuesday.Forward Vinicius has scored just one goal in eight appearances across all competitions this season for Spanish club Real Madrid, who sit fourth in the LaLiga standings with 15 points.However, the 26-year-old showed flashes of his quality in Brazil's 4-2 friendly victory over Australia in Brisbane on Tuesday, contributing to the third goal and converting a penalty for the fourth."I know Vini very well. To me, he is a key player for the national team - a key player for Brazil - and he was a key player in my own footballing journey," said Ancelotti, who also coached Vinicius when he was in charge of Real Madrid."He is a key player for the future. Is he at his best right now? No, he isn't, but it is the start of the season. And Vini, always, even when he isn't at his best, he can still make the difference, just as he did today."The goal that really opened up the game was thanks to him. So, I'm going to be very patient, because he deserves that patience."Brazil next travel to Kolkata for a friendly with India on Saturday. 

A second-half surge secured a 4-2 win for Brazil in their second friendly with Australia on Tuesday, but Brazil manager Carlo Ancelotti was left worried as his captain Raphinha had to be substituted at halftime with muscle discomfort.The Brazilian federation (CBF) said Barcelona attacker Raphinha, who scored from the spot before the break to equalise at 2-2, felt discomfort in his right leg, where he has suffered multiple hamstring and thigh injuries.Raphinha's departure, however, did not hinder Brazil's comeback after a shaky first half, as Bruno Guimaraes struck in the 69th minute and Vinicius Jr converted a late penalty to secure their only win in the two-match friendly tour of Australia.Australia had fielded the same starting 11 that had Brazil on the ropes in Friday's 1-1 draw, but Brazil manager Carlo Ancelotti made seven changes, switching out the entire defence.The pitchside fireworks before kickoff in Brisbane were no match for Brazil's immediate barrage, as Vanderson scored his first international goal just three minutes in. TAPPED HOME AT THE FAR POSTBut Australia hit back from Connor Metcalfe's corner before the half-hour mark, as Alessandro Circati tapped home at the far post.Five minutes later, Metcalfe let fly a left-footer from outside the box that soared past the diving keeper, putting Australia ahead.Brazil equalised just before the break from Raphinha's penalty after Danilo was brought down by Harry Souttar.Raphinha's replacement Endrick immediately drew repeated harsh challenges from Souttar, nearly kicking off a brawl after Endrick pushed Souttar and went down grabbing his neck in the 65th minute.Endrick had his revenge four minutes later, as he sprinted down the left and flashed a cross to Guimaraes, who struck the ball in. Vinicius scored Brazil's fourth in the 80th minute with another penalty after Nestory Irankunda tripped him in the box.Brazil travel to Kolkata for a friendly with India on Saturday. 

Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti said the five-time world champions take their friendly against India next week very seriously, insisting there is "never a friendly game" for them, according to media reports Wednesday. Brazil, ranked fifth in the world and boasting stars including Vinicius Junior, will face India in Kolkata on October 3 -- their first senior men's international in the country where football enjoys a passionate following despite cricket's overwhelming popularity. The visit will offer a rare opportunity for local fans to see one of football's most celebrated teams in action."Brazil has supporters in every corner of the world," Ancelotti was quoted as saying by daily The Times of India."It's a pleasure for us to play in India, not just for the Brazilian supporters, but also those in India." Although the match is officially a friendly, the veteran Italian manager said Brazil would approach it with full seriousness."It's a preparatory game, a friendly, but for us, there is never a friendly game," Ancelotti, 67, said. India, ranked 138th by FIFA, have never qualified for a World Cup but football remains hugely popular, especially in Kolkata and the southern city of Kochi.Ancelotti said the fixture would also offer Brazil a chance to experience a new football culture. "We have to see other nations, other cultures. We are used to playing friendlies with different styles," said the coach who took charge last year."India will be exciting. It's true that India does not have a good experience (of playing world-class opponents), but it's important for us to know how they play. I've never been to India. I am very excited to come to Kolkata."Next week's match will be the first appearance by a full-strength Brazilian men's national team in India.Brazilian legend Pele visited India in 1977 and 2015. The Brazilians will arrive in India after playing two friendlies in Australia. One of the most decorated managers in the game's history, Ancelotti has won a record five Champions League titles as a coach.Brazil are seeking to end a lengthy World Cup drought, having last lifted football's biggest prize in 2002. Their most recent World Cup campaign saw them bow out in the round-of-16. 

Brazil turned to Carlo Ancelotti hoping the Italian coaching great could end their long wait to win another World Cup, but his mission ended in a painful defeat to Norway on Sunday as the Selecao's woes at the tournament went on.Two Erling Haaland goals decided the last-16 clash at the MetLife Stadium in Norway's favour after Bruno Guimaraes had an early penalty saved.Neymar's successful late spot-kick was just a consolation, as the once mighty Brazilians - who had just 34 percent possession - slumped to their earliest World Cup exit since 1990.The ex-Real Madrid and AC Milan coach was appointed in May last year and recently signed a contract extension to stay until 2030.He may have been realistic enough to know winning this year's World Cup was a big ask, but going out so soon is an enormous disappointment. Despite that, he insisted he would stay."A defeat is the start of a new adventure. Now we need to keep working hard and keep improving," he said."This is football. This is sport. You just have to deal with it. We will use this as fuel going forward."The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) had been courting Ancelotti for two years before getting their man.The Selecao were in a dire state after their quarter-final exit on penalties to Croatia at the 2022 World Cup.Coach Tite departed, and Fernando Diniz took over for the start of qualifying for this World Cup, but lasted just six games.In came Dorival Junior, but the veteran oversaw a quarter-final exit at the 2024 Copa America before being dismissed in March last year.Ancelotti saw Brazil over the line, although they finished fifth in the 10-team South American qualifying group, 10 points behind first-placed Argentina.The hope, expectation even, was that they would still compete strongly here.Instead they continued a now long-standing trend - since last winning the World Cup in 2002, they have lost every time they have faced European opposition in the knockout stages.At the last five World Cups before this, Brazil lost four times in the quarter-finals and reached the semis once - when they suffered a traumatising 7-1 defeat to Germany as hosts in 2014. Endrick to step up? Sunday's defeat suggests they are going backwards, despite the leadership shown at this year's tournament by Vinicius Junior, the Real Madrid forward who turns 26 next week."Being knocked out of a World Cup is always a huge blow," he said. "But now we have to move on, there's not much we can do."That means eventually turning their attention towards the next Copa America in 2028, before they can build to the 2030 World Cup.By the time that comes around, the nation of the great Pele will have gone 28 years without lifting the trophy.Ancelotti has had an incredible managerial career at club level in Europe, winning the Champions League five times. But his relationship with the World Cup has been less happy.As a player, he missed Italy's victorious 1982 World Cup campaign through injury. He played in 1990, when Italy hosted but lost in the semi-finals to Argentina.Then came 1994 and the shootout loss to Brazil in the final in the USA, with a 35-year-old Ancelotti serving as Arrigo Sacchi's assistant.This time he insisted his team had given a good account of themselves, as they eased through the group stage and fought back to beat Japan in the last 32."I don't think we have had a spectacular World Cup but we had a good one," he said.His decision to include Neymar was a gamble, with the 34-year-old not having played for his country since 2023 because of injuries.It didn't pay off - he made only two substitute appearances and announced his international retirement after the Norway loss.This was an ageing squad, with 10 players in their thirties. "We need fresh talent, top-class players who can play in the national team of the future," added Ancelotti.Endrick, the 19-year-old Real Madrid starlet, could lead the next generation."The history of the Brazilian national team has been marked by great achievements, but also by moments that have strengthened us going forward," said a CBF statement."Today we say goodbye to the World Cup, but we do sure that we will come back stronger." 

Carlo Ancelotti kept his trademark cool to guide Brazil into the World Cup last 16 but defender Gabriel admits there is room for improvement as they attempt to defy the sceptics.Brazil were a half away from going out of the tournament before fighting back for a dramatic 2-1 win over Japan in Houston.Down 1-0 at half-time after a wonderful solo goal by Kaishu Sano, Casemiro silenced his doubters to level for Brazil and their legion of fans with a 56th-minute header.Ancelotti sent on Gabriel Martinelli on 66 minutes, and with extra time looming, the Arsenal winger struck in the fifth minute of added time to leave Japan's players in tears.A side attempting to win Brazil's sixth World Cup - and first since 2002 - face Norway or the Ivory Coast next.Arsenal centre-back Gabriel, whose cross was converted by Casemiro, said: "We faced a great team, we ended up conceding a goal but we knew we had the possibility of coming back into the game. "So it was about showing a bit of composure in the final third."That was the message to the players from the famously laid-back Ancelotti at half-time - remain calm, keep plugging away, the goals would come.After an even first half against a Japan team considered dark horses by some, Brazil dominated in the second period."At half-time I told them not to lose patience because we were going to score sooner or later," said Ancelotti.Brazilian media outlet O Globo praised the Italian, Brazil's first foreign coach since 1965, for his tactical flexibility."Ancelotti has stated several times that he doesn't want the national team to have just one identity, but rather, several," said O Globo, adding that the "chameleon" style could be Brazil's "trump card"."Brazil's greatest weapon was Ancelotti's reading of the game," it said. Ancelotti unwavering on Casemiro This Brazil side has been panned at home as being only a shadow of the great sides of yesteryear after labouring through qualifying.They boast the Real Madrid attacker Vinicius Junior, who scored four times in the group stage, but are otherwise not laden with world-class talent.They were unimpressive in drawing 1-1 with a strong Morocco team to start the group phase, before 3-0 wins over limited Haiti and Scotland teams.And while Japan are a technically talented side with big ambitions, they came into the last-32 encounter having drawn two and won one - a 4-0 thrashing of Tunisia - in the group phase.After conceding, the defender Danilo having given the ball away, Brazil's thousands of fans grew restless in Houston.The 34-year-old midfielder Casemiro has been a particular focus of their discontent.But with Ancelotti - at his first World Cup as a coach but a serial winner at club level - holding the reins Brazil turned it around for an ultimately deserved win.They would be favourites to beat Norway or the Ivory Coast, and suddenly the quarter-finals are in view.Gabriel, one of the outstanding defenders in the Premier League in recent years, struck a note of caution."Let's rest now and think, we know this competition isn't easy and they are two great teams," he said of their next opponents."We need to improve for sure." Brazilian media flagged other concerns.There was the sight of attacking midfielder Lucas Paqueta going off in distress and replaced at half-time.Barcelona winger Raphinha has been injured since coming off against Haiti.And for some pundits Casemiro, despite his goal, and the 34-year-old fullback Danilo are liabilities.Ancelotti will hear nothing against defensive midfielder Casemiro, having brought him back into the fold after becoming coach in May last year."Casemiro is a leader," the 67-year-old said."He knows his position very well, how to play his position."No one is teaching him how he has to play in his role. That's very important." 

Brazil's World Cup Round of 32 meeting with Japan on Monday comes with the chance for revenge for Carlo Ancelotti's squad and a test of how far he has taken his team since a Tokyo collapse early ⁠in his tenure.The five-times world champions were beaten 3-2 by Japan in October 2025 after leading 2-0 in a friendly, conceding three goals in less than ⁠20 minutes as the hosts claimed their first win over Brazil in 14 meetings.It was another reminder of the job Ancelotti had inherited after leaving Real Madrid with only a year to turn a disjointed team into World Cup challengers.Brazil were wobbling when the Italian arrived, about to complete their worst South American qualifying campaign, finishing fifth after working under four different managers.With only five international breaks before selecting his 26-man squad, Ancelotti used the last three to broaden Brazil's horizons, taking on opponents from Asia, Europe and Africa.The Asia leg began smoothly enough. Brazil thrashed South Korea 5-0 in Seoul and looked on course for another comfortable win in Tokyo after racing ⁠into a 2-0 lead inside a little over half an hour.However, Japan roared back in the second half and Brazil were left with an uncomfortable souvenir. Monday's match in Houston, however, will be a very different affair."Perhaps... they will be even more motivated," Japan manager Hajime Moriyasu told reporters after his side's 1-1 draw with Sweden secured second place in Group F behind the Netherlands."We will be playing against a Brazil side that is very keen to win. I'm looking forward to it."Japan will be much changed from the side that stunned Brazil, with injuries depriving Moriyasu of captain Wataru Endo, wingers Kaoru Mitoma and Takefusa Kubo and forward Takumi Minamino, who scored in the October victory.Brazil also look different. The defence that started in Tokyo has disappeared from Ancelotti's World ⁠Cup squad entirely, and the team have been improving after opening the tournament with a ⁠1-1 draw against Morocco.Back-to-back wins have ⁠sharpened the mood, Vinicius Jr has scored four goals and Neymar has returned to the national team after three years out because of persistent injuries."We're not perfect. We can improve. For example, our pace on the ball. We can be quicker," Ancelotti said after Brazil beat Scotland 3-0."But I'm pleased because the team has improved a lot since the first match. Now it's a knockout competition. We need to show real grit."The fixture also carries a deeper historical thread. Brazil have long been a reference point for Japanese football, a relationship embodied by Zico.After success with Flamengo, Udinese and Brazil, he came out of retirement to play for Sumitomo Metal, later Kashima Antlers, from 1991 to 1994, helping shape Japan's developing professional game. He later managed Kashima and now works as a technical adviser at the club.Zico also coached Japan from 2002 to 2006, winning the 2004 Asian Cup and guiding them to the 2006 World Cup, where Brazil beat them 4-1 in the group stage to seal Japan's elimination.So both teams will have old scores to settle in Houston.    

Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti hailed Vinicius Junior as "one of the best players in the world" after the Real Madrid forward continued his excellent World Cup form with a brace in Wednesday's 3-0 win over Scotland.Vinicius scored twice in the first half in Miami, including a header, to set Brazil on their way to a victory which allowed them to progress to the last 32 as winners of Group C."I had no doubts about how he would be coming into this World Cup," said Ancelotti of the 25-year-old, who has four goals in three games at this year's tournament."For him it is an honour to play for the national team. He is playing well and he even scored a header, which is very rare for him."I knew all about what Vini could do. He is one of the best players in the world," added Ancelotti, who managed the forward for four years at Real Madrid.Vinicius scored in Brazil’s opening 1-1 draw with Morocco and then also netted in the 3-0 defeat of Haiti.He is level with France's Kylian Mbappe and Norway's Erling Haaland in the golden boot race, with that trio all one behind Lionel Messi. He is the first Brazilian to score in all three group matches at a World Cup since Ronaldo and Rivaldo both achieved the feat in 2002.The only other Brazilian players to find the net in all three group games are Jairzinho, in 1970, and Romario in 1994 - that is illustrious company to keep, and Brazil went on to lift the trophy every time one of their players did that in the past."I always say I am not that bothered about numbers. I am not used to scoring so many goals, but the coach has moved me into a position to which I have adapted well, and now I am scoring and helping the team," Vinicius told Brazilian broadcaster CazeTV.Vinicius, who came second in the Ballon d'Or in 2024, netted 22 goals in 53 games in all competitions for Real last season."Hopefully I can keep going to the final. I am very happy with the work being done by the team. If everyone is playing well, the ball will arrive in attacking areas and we will have chances to score goals," he added. 'The passion of a kid'Matheus Cunha got Brazil's other goal against Scotland, before the Manchester United player was replaced by Neymar for his first appearance for his country since October 2023."He deserved to come on. He has worked hard and trained hard to recover fitness. He has done it very professionally," Ancelotti said of Brazil's all-time top scorer."He has the quality to help the team at this World Cup and he played well in the few minutes he was on."He needs no motivation to play for Brazil, none of the players do. He is 34 but he has the same passion for playing football as a kid."Brazil now go to Houston for a last-32 tie next Monday against the runners-up in Group F -- either the Netherlands, Japan or Sweden."Compared to the first game we are making fewer errors, playing with more rhythm, and we are more clinical up front," added Ancelotti."In the two games since Morocco we have left a good impression. The objective was to finish first, and now we just need to keep working and getting better for the next game."Now we are really playing as a team, and that was of the aim. We are not perfect; we have things to improve on."But I am very happy because we have got better already and we are solid now. It's really important to be solid in the knockout rounds."
