New AC Milan coach Ruben Amorim vowed on Tuesday to honour the legacy of club legend Franco Baresi, who died last week, as he sets about reviving the fortunes of the ailing Italian giants.Portuguese Amorim has returned to coaching after being sacked in January by Manchester United and faces a Milan derby against bitter rivals Inter in the Western Australia city of Perth on Wednesday.Amorim's reign began with a 2-2 draw in a friendly against Celtic in Glasgow last month.The 41-year-old's immediate target will be a top-four finish in Serie A after AC Milan missed out on the Champions League on the final day of last season."I feel that the group is really together," Amorim told reporters in Perth."The important thing is to continue with this spirit when things become difficult."In this club you need to win every game, so we need to keep that spirit all season."AC Milan were boosted in the close season by veteran midfield maestro Luka Modric agreeing a one-year contract extension. Emotional occasionAmorim said Modric would play against Inter, having just competed at his fifth World Cup where Croatia were knocked out in the last 32 by Portugal."We did a lot to get him back at least for one more year," Amorim said of the former Tottenham and Real Madrid star, who turns 41 in September."I'm really pleased with him and he is ready to play some minutes tomorrow."The match will be an emotional first match for AC Milan since the death of Baresi, who captained the club during a golden era in the 1980s and 1990s."When you talk with all the staff about Franco, you see the tears in their eyes," Amorim said."Franco was all about the team. The team is the most important thing in our club."I will not promise results, but I can promise that I will continue the legacy of Franco."AC Milan will continue their pre-season against Chelsea in Jakarta on Saturday, while Inter Milan - who beat Manchester City on penalties in Hong Kong on Saturday - will remain in Perth to play Juventus on the same day.Juventus round out the series of all-Italian Perth friendlies against Serie B team Palermo on August 11.The week-long festival, dubbed "Calcio Italiano", comes after a proposed Serie A match between AC Milan and Como in Perth earlier this year was cancelled because of sanctions imposed by the Asian Football Confederation.Inter Milan manager Cristian Chivu said he thought hosting a Serie A match in Perth would be a good idea"What I suggest is playing it at the start of the season," Chivu said."We should start promoting Italian football more, especially in this part of the world." 

Manchester United interim coach Darren Fletcher said Tuesday he did not think he would manage the club in his “wildest dreams” as he prepares for his first game following the sacking of Ruben Amorim. The Portuguese was axed on Monday after 14 months at Old Trafford after an explosive post-match interview following his team’s 1-1 draw at Leeds on Sunday. Under-18s coach and former United player Fletcher was put in charge for today’s match at Burnley and faced the press for the first time Tuesday. The former Scotland international is expected to remain in place until the club appoints a caretaker boss, with United planning to name Amorim’s permanent successor at the end of the season. Fletcher, 41, said the past 24 hours at Old Trafford had been “surreal”. “It’s an amazing honour to be able to lead a Manchester United team,” he said. “I don’t even think it was in my wildest dreams that that was something that could potentially happen, even thinking about playing for the club and stuff like that. But to lead out the team is an amazing honour and something I am really proud to do. It’s not (happened) in the circumstances that I expected it to happen so that obviously is something that doesn’t sit quite easy with me, but I just have to think I’ve got a job to do and I’ve got to lead the team tomorrow and think of the great honour and pride in doing that.” Fletcher said conversations with the club’s hierarchy had focused on today’s game against struggling Burnley and they would speak again after the match. Fletcher, United’s technical director between 2021 and 2024, was asked whether he wanted to try to earn the manager’s job on a full-time basis. “Honestly it’s not something I’ve thought about,” he said. “I’m focusing on Burnley. I think that discussion is for after the game. There has been that much going on and it has all happened so quickly that all my concentration, efforts and thoughts have gone into Burnley.” 

Ruben Amorim was sacked by Manchester United on Monday, bringing a dramatic end to his turbulent 14-month spell as manager of the struggling Premier League giants.The dismissal of the Portuguese follows growing tensions with Old Trafford bosses, including director of football Jason Wilcox, over recent days.The club, sixth in the Premier League table after a 1-1 draw at Leeds on Sunday, issued a statement saying Amorim had "departed his role as head coach of Manchester United", thanking him for his service."The club's leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change," United said in their statement."This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish."Current under-18s coach Darren Fletcher, a former United midfielder and technical director between 2021 and 2024, will take charge of the team against struggling Burnley on Wednesday.The BBC said the club were planning to appoint a caretaker boss for the rest of the season.Names in the frame for the full-time job include Enzo Maresca, who left Chelsea last week, Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner and former England manager Gareth Southgate.Rising tensionsAmorim had hinted at deep frustrations on Friday, suggesting he was not being fully backed in the transfer market.And he made a string of eye-catching comments after Sunday's draw at Elland Road, where he stressed he was United's manager rather than "just the coach".The Portuguese told the scouting department and Wilcox "to do their job" during a blockbuster end to a post-match press conference that raised major doubts over his future.And he repeatedly suggested to the media that he would leave when his contract expired in 18 months' time.But reports on Monday said United's decision to axe their manager was due to the lack of progress rather than a power struggle.The dismissal is a dismal end for Amorim, who won just 25 of his 63 games at United in all competitions during the shortest reign for a permanent manager since David Moyes was sacked just eight months into his tenure in 2014.He had the worst win ratio (32 percent), the worst goals-conceded-per-game ratio (1.53) and the lowest clean-sheet ratio (15 percent) of any United boss in the Premier League.Amorim arrived at Old Trafford to replace Erik ten Hag in November 2024 as one of the most sought-after coaches in world football following a successful stint at Sporting Lisbon, where he won two league titles.But he was powerless to stop United's slide to a 15th-place finish in the Premier League - their worst campaign for 51 years - at one stage describing his team as "maybe the worst" in the history of the club.Amorim had the chance to end the 2024/25 campaign on a high in Bilbao but United lost the Europa League final against Tottenham and missed out on European football this season as a result.The club backed their manager in the summer transfer window, spending more than £200 million ($269 million) on new signings including Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko and Matheus Cunha.But they have again flattered to deceive, winning just eight of their 20 league games so far and falling 17 points behind leaders Arsenal.Amorim has been hit by injuries and a number of players are on Africa Cup of Nations duty but he has been criticised for sticking rigidly to his preferred 3-4-3 formation despite evidence it was not the best fit for his players.His exit leaves the club searching for their seventh permanent manager since the retirement of Alex Ferguson, who left as a Premier League champion in 2013.Since then, apart from the occasional cup success, the 20-time English champions have been also-rans, overshadowed by bitter rivals Manchester City and Liverpool.
