Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is relishing the prospect of facing long-time friend Xabi Alonso in the Premier League for the first time when the defending champions host Chelsea on Sunday.Both sides have made perfect starts to the season, with Arsenal and Chelsea both taking six points from their opening two matches. Arteta and Alonso, both 44, grew up together in Spain's Basque Country and have remained close throughout their playing and coaching careers.The pair first faced each other as managers in a friendly in 2024 when Alonso was in charge of Bayer Leverkusen, but Sunday's encounter will be their first meeting in England's top flight."I am really happy for him. It's incredible because obviously we have the history we have together," Arteta told reporters ."To be facing each other at such a level and with the responsibility we have managing some of the top clubs in the country is a really beautiful thing to experience."Chelsea's attack has been impressive early in the campaign, with Morgan Rogers, Joao Pedro and Cole Palmer all finding form in front of goal, but Arteta said controlling the flow of the game would be crucial."That will depend on a lot of factors and game state is a massive one, especially because the two games that they played, they scored very, very early and that changes the momentum and the shift of the game," Arteta said. "But they are capable and he's capable of playing in various ways. He’s been a really successful manager so far."Arsenal were linked with a number of high-profile attacking targets during the transfer window, including Rogers, Julian Alvarez and Vinicius Junior, but their only forward addition was Greece winger Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge.Arteta, however, brushed off suggestions that Arsenal had fallen short in the market. "I don't know, these are just opinions," the Spaniard said. "The window is closed and I prefer to look at all the incredible things that we have in this squad and not to spend any more time on the things that are not part of us right now. That's it and that's my main responsibility."Arsenal will lean heavily on the likes of Kai Havertz, Viktor Gyokeres and Bukayo Saka but Arteta insisted the attack is not weaker compared to last season despite the departures of Leandro Trossard, Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli"We have to understand the amount of minutes that those players played and the ones that were injured last year, especially in the first six months, and the data shows something completely different," Arteta said. "But it is what it is. It is what we have and, as I said before, we already have some very, very good players."Martinelli's departure for Saudi side Al Hilal in a reported £60mn ($81mn) deal ended the Brazilian's seven-year spell at Arsenal that saw him make nearly 300 appearances for the club. "He goes with our gratitude," said Arteta. "It's been a pleasure to work with him, to be part of this journey with him." 

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso said on Tuesday "no decision" had been made on Mykhailo Mudryk's future but added the winger could play in pre-season after returning from a doping ban.Ukrainian international Mudryk was suspended for four years after failing a 2024 drug test, but has won an appeal and was permitted on Friday to resume his football career.The 25-year-old has not played since November 2024 and there have been rumours that Chelsea could sanction a loan move to bring him up to speed, or even a permanent transfer.Asked about those possibilities in Hong Kong on Tuesday ahead of his side's friendly against Juventus, Alonso said: "No decision made."Everything has happened so quick, so the main thing is that we were thinking about the person, to feel that he was back in the group dynamic, part of the team."And we need to assess, but for sure... it is a special case with him, so we need to be sensitive."Mudryk's ban came after testing positive for a low concentration of the prohibited substance meldonium.He filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport, and rule changes in the interim mean that if his test produced the same result now, he would not have faced charges.Asked if Mudryk could play in Wednesday's game against Juventus, Alonso answered in the affirmative."Yesterday was more about the feelings, about the emotions to be back with the team, more than to assess the fitness level," the Spaniard said."But yes, he could play. Maybe 90 minutes (is) too early. But he can be selected."Mudryk took part in an open training session at Hong Kong's Kai Tak Stadium on Tuesday evening, drawing a loud cheer from fans when he found the net in a drill.Alonso said he was also "looking forward to welcoming" Jordan Henderson after the England midfielder signed from Premier League rivals Brentford on Monday.However, "we need to assess because of the injury he had, how long it will take to be fit".Henderson broke his arm in a freak injury sustained while celebrating England's win over Mexico at the World Cup.The 36-year-old has followed international teammate Danny Welbeck, 35, to Stamford Bridge, in a shift from the Blues' long-held strategy of snapping up younger talent on lengthy contracts.Juventus are looking to improve on last season's disappointing sixth-placed finish in Serie A and announced the signing of Bosnian teenager Kerim Alajbegovic on Sunday alongside the return of French striker Randal Kolo Muani to the club."To have new players in our team, we are very (happy) about them. We have needed them for a long time," manager Luciano Spalletti told a news conference on Tuesday."We know they are strong, and we just need to make them settle," he said through an interpreter.Chelsea's pre-season tour so far has comprised two friendlies in Australia - a see-saw 6-4 win over Western Sydney Wanderers and a 2-1 defeat to London rivals Tottenham.After Juventus, they play Italian giants AC Milan in Jakarta and Johor Darul Ta'zim in Malaysia before heading home for a final warm-up against Spain's Real Sociedad.They face Fulham at Craven Cottage in their opening league game on August 24.Juventus travel to Australia for friendlies against fellow Italians Inter Milan and Palermo before kicking off the Serie A season with a trip to Frosinone on August 23. 

New Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso on Monday said Morgan Rogers was "a great signing" who would make the club more competitive and expected the England midfielder to "link really well" with Cole Palmer.The versatile Rogers was signed from Aston Villa last week for £117mn ($157mn), a record for a British player.Alonso said he was "delighted" to lure the 23-year-old to Stamford Bridge ahead of his first match in charge, a pre-season friendly against Western Sydney Wanderers on Tuesday."It's a great signing. I think that in that position, we needed an important player, and I'm sure that there were not many more better options than Morgan," the Spaniard told reporters."So we are delighted. It means a lot for everyone."The swoop is a significant statement of intent from Chelsea, who finished 10th in the Premier League last season and missed out on Europe.Alonso will have to find a way to accommodate Rogers, Palmer, Pedro Neto, Estevao Willian and another close-season signing, Geovany Quenda, into his attacking midfield positions."I have a plan. I have an idea. I can see them linking really well," Alonso said on how Morgan could fit in alongside Palmer. The pair are close friends who have similar playing styles."You need to have a good mix, good stability players, and players that can play with more freedom," Alonso added."And if we get that balance right, and we get those special players in the right positions, with good control, I think that we will be more competitive with the ball and against the ball."Chelsea had reportedly been chasing Rogers for two years and beat Arsenal to his signature after the Premier League champions refused to match the eye-watering fee demanded by Villa.His transfer surpassed the previous record fee for a British player set by Manchester City when they signed England midfielder Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest for £116 million earlier this month."I think that one of his best qualities is that he's flexible," Alonso said of Rogers, who is not on their pre-season trip to Australia after helping England to finish third at the World Cup."I think that he can play in that pocket position, close to the striker, close to the turn, but he's played as well on the right. But I think more coming from the left."We (will) play him where he feels he is enjoying his game, that he feels his flow. I'm sure that he will have good connections with the other players that he can have around him."So if we get those connections right, those little associations between them that they look for each other and they connect well, I think that it will be a great step forward in the quality of our game."Chelsea will also play fellow London club Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday in Sydney, before flying to Hong Kong for a match against Juventus on August 5. 

Fernando Alonso's main focus for the Belgian Grand Prix weekend will be making sure he gets home in time to watch Spain play Argentina in the World Cup final on Sunday.The Spanish driver's Aston Martin team have been Formula One backmarkers this season, struggling to finish races and scoring just one point from nine rounds.Belgium, the last race before Aston Martin introduce a major chassis upgrade with an improved engine still to come, could mark a low point before things start to improve.In 2010, the last time a Formula One race coincided with soccer's biggest match, Alonso was at Ferrari and fighting for wins.Spain, now the European champions, won that World Cup in South Africa and are chasing their second crown against the holders."It will be different. As we don't expect much this weekend," two-time world champion Alonso told reporters at Spa-Francorchamps."The main focus on Sunday will be to get home and watch the match, to be honest."The final is scheduled for 9 p.m. European time (1900 GMT) with the Formula One race starting at 3 p.m. local time (1300 GMT)."It's going to be tricky because we are flying back home," said Alonso."So maybe again on Sunday the second half will be probably the moment that I will watch the game. And the first half, just miss it."Argentine Franco Colapinto, who races for Renault-owned Alpine, and Spaniard Carlos Sainz at Williams will face similar problems."I'm definitely going to be much more nervous about the match than the race," said Colapinto."Yesterday (the semi-final against England) we had a lot of fun, a lot of suffering. But if you don't suffer a bit, you're not Argentinian."It was one of those matches that, you are really nervous, but then you celebrate a lot. So it was a long night, but very fun." 

Chelsea appointed Xabi Alonso as the club's manager on Sunday on a four-year deal from next season with the Spaniard the latest coach tasked with turning around the club's fortunes. The Blues lost the FA Cup final to Manchester City on Saturday and lie ninth in the Premier League with two games of the campaign to go. Alonso rose to prominence as one of Europe's brightest coaches by guiding Bayer Leverkusen to an unbeaten German league and cup double in the 2023/24 season. However, he lasted just seven months in the Real Madrid hotseat. Appointed last year, he departed the Spanish giants in January. "Chelsea Football Club is delighted to announce the appointment of Xabi Alonso as manager of the men's team," Chelsea said in a statement. "The Spaniard will begin his role on July 1, 2026, having agreed a four-year contract at Stamford Bridge." Alonso faces a huge task to get Chelsea back in the running for major honours. Chelsea did win the Club World Cup and the UEFA Conference League last year but have little else to show for well over one billion pounds ($1.35 billion) of spending on players since US consortium BlueCo took over in 2022 following Roman Abramovich's trophy-laden ownership of the club. Defeat at Wembley on Saturday means they have now gone eight seasons without a domestic trophy. "Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in world football and it fills me with immense pride to become manager of this great club," said Alonso. "From my conversations with the ownership group and sporting leadership, it is clear we share the same ambition. We want to build a team capable of competing consistently at the highest level and fighting for trophies. There is great talent in the squad and huge potential at this football club and it will be my great honour to lead it. Now the focus is on hard work, building the right culture and winning trophies." Fans have continuously protested against BlueCo, who have embarked on a scattergun approach to hoovering up young talent from across the globe. That policy has secured some notable successes such as England international Cole Palmer. But a lack of experience in both the playing squad and the coaching staff has been blamed for a lack of consistency. Alonso becomes the sixth permanent manager to take charge at Stamford Bridge in the past four years after Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter, Mauricio Pochettino, Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior. Rosenior was sacked after less than four months in charge in April after Chelsea lost five consecutive league games without scoring for the first time since 1912. Interim boss Calum McFarlane guided them into the FA Cup final, but Chelsea are winless in seven league games and at risk of missing out on European football entirely next season. Alonso has a point to prove after a turbulent short spell in Madrid, but his arrival is a coup for Chelsea's much-criticised owners. Many Liverpool fans were desperate for him to return to Anfield, where he starred for five years as a player between 2004 and 2009, to succeed the under-fire Arne Slot.

Aston Martin chief Adrian Newey revealed Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll fear permanent nerve damage from extreme vibration in their cars and are unlikely to complete the Australian Grand Prix.The Newey-designed car suffered issues through torrid pre-season testing, including an unreliable Honda power unit and a lack of spare parts. They were the slowest car with the fewest laps, completing a total of just 128 over three days in Bahrain – the equivalent of what many teams did in one day.Matters have not improved as they prepare for the season-opening race in Melbourne this weekend.Newey revealed both drivers were suffering such severe vibration through the steering wheel that they would only be able to complete 25 and 15 laps respectively. "That vibration into the chassis is causing a few reliability problems, mirrors falling off, tail lights falling off, all that sort of thing, which we are having to address," he said."But the much more significant problem with that is that vibration is transmitted ultimately into the driver's fingers. Fernando is of the feeling that he can't do more than 25 laps consecutively before he will risk permanent nerve damage into his hands. Lance is of the opinion that he can't do more than 15 laps before that threshold. I think there is no point in not being open and honest in this meeting," added Newey, considered the greatest designer the sport has seen. We are going to have to be very heavily restricted on how many laps we do in the race until we get on top of the source of the vibration and improve the vibration at source."There was speculation before the Australian Grand Prix that the team may not even compete, but it arrived as planned. Aston Martin had entered 2026 with high expectations given the arrival of Newey, who was also appointed team principal. 

New coach Alvaro Arbeloa said he was not afraid of failure as he took the blame for Real Madrid's stunning 3-2 defeat to second-division Albacete ‌in the Copa del Rey round of 16 on ‌Wednesday.Arbeloa endured a nightmare ‍start to his managerial career at Real after taking charge of the Spanish giants following ⁠Xabi Alonso's departure on Monday.The ⁠shock result capped a dismal week for the club, who also lost ‍3-2 to Barcelona in Sunday's Spanish Super Cup final.The 42-year-old Arbeloa inherits a side four points adrift of their arch-rivals Barcelona in LaLiga and now out of the Copa del Rey. Speaking after the humbling result at a misty Carlos Belmonte stadium, the former Real Madrid defender took full responsibility for the defeat but insisted ‌that brighter days lay ahead."At this club, a draw is always bad, a tragedy. It's painful, and I'm sure all our fans are hurting," Arbeloa ‍told reporters. "I am responsible and ⁠to blame. As ‌for the line-up and the substitutions, I can only thank the players. Now we have to recover for Saturday."Arbeloa's decision to rest several first-team stars came under scrutiny as Madrid struggled against an organised and determined Albacete side. Despite the result, Arbeloa doubled down on his choices. "I don't regret it. I was convinced that the squad I brought was the right one," he asserted."The players we had formed a great team. I would make the same decision a thousand times over. It's difficult ​for players to adapt to ‌everything I've asked of them in just one day. We also have many players who need ⁠to recover physically."Madrid's second consecutive loss in less than a week was a blow for Arbeloa, but the manager remained steadfast in his belief that failure is a stepping stone to success. "I'm not afraid of failure," he said."I understand anyone who wants to describe this defeat as a failure. ​Failure is part of the road to success. It will make me better, and it will make us all better. I've endured defeats harder than this one. We'll prepare for the next match with maximum dedication."He added that Real had a lot of room for improvement physically. "With a new manager, players will need time to adjust to different ideas," he said. "What happens on the pitch is ultimately my ⁠responsibility. We need clearer ideas in how we approach matches, particularly against teams that defend deep." 

New Real Madrid coach Alvaro Arbeloa insisted Tuesday he would be himself at the helm of the Spanish giants rather than trying to imitate Jose Mourinho.Arbeloa, who in his playing days at Madrid was an ally of his then coach Mourinho, has drawn comparisons to the Portuguese veteran for his approach to management.The 42-year-old former defender was appointed to replace Xabi Alonso on Monday after Real Madrid lost the Spanish Super Cup final against rivals Barcelona on Sunday."I have not spoken to Jose yet. For me it was a privilege and an honour to be coached by Jose Mourinho," Arbeloa told a news conference."I have a great relationship with him... and obviously he was someone who influenced me a lot, I carry him within me."(However) I am going to be Alvaro Arbeloa, because while it's true I am not afraid of failing, and have never been, I'm sure that if I tried to be Jose Mourinho, I would fail spectacularly."Mourinho, currently coaching Benfica, led Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013, winning one La Liga title.During that era he battled against Pep Guardiola's dominant Barcelona when the fierce rivalry between the Catalans and Real Madrid was at its most bitter.Barca currently lead Madrid by four points at the top of La Liga and Arbeloa's job is to revert the situation, although his first match in charge is at Albacete in the Copa del Rey last 16 on Wednesday.Arbeloa, who was coaching Madrid's reserve side and previously working with the club's youth teams before he was promoted, said success is the most important thing for the record 15-time European champions."This club is winning, winning, and winning again. That demand on ourselves, showing the DNA of what brought us here, that has filled our trophy cabinets (is what I want)," continued Arbeloa."When I was a player I received those values from the players in the dressing room, and for me that is the most important thing... to be able to excite the fans we have all over the world and try to leave those cabinets even more full."That is my work, that is my obsession and what I will be living every day."Madrid did not announce how long Arbeloa's contract as first-team coach would be."What I can tell you is that I've been here for 20 years, at home, and I will be at Real Madrid as long as they want me here," added Arbeloa."This is my home, that's how I feel and that's how it will always be."No MbappeStriker Kylian Mbappe was absent as Arbeloa took charge of his first training session on Tuesday before the visit to face second-tier Albacete.Mbappe made his comeback from a knee sprain as a late substitute in the Spanish Super Cup final defeat by Barcelona on Sunday, but is likely to keep working on his recovery until next Tuesday's Champions League match against his former side Monaco.A Real Madrid source told AFP it was "logical" that Mbappe was absent from training, given his knee issue.Former coach Alonso had admitted it was a calculated risk to involve Madrid's top goalscorer in the match against Barca in Saudi Arabia.Arbeloa said he had a close relationship with Alonso, a former team-mate for Madrid and the Spanish national team."Everyone here knows the bond that connects me to him, the friendship that connects me to him, how much I value him, how much I love him, and I know that's mutual, has been mutual and will continue to be mutual," said Arbeloa.Alonso, replaced after less than eight months at the helm, said on social media he was leaving the club having done the best he could."Things didn't go as I would have liked," wrote the Basque coach on Instagram on Tuesday."Coaching Real Madrid was an honour and a responsibility. I'm grateful to the club, the players and above all the fans for their confidence and support."I leave respectfully, with gratitude, and the pride of having done the best I could." 

Real Madrid said that coach Xabi Alonso has left the Spanish giants by mutual consent, to be replaced by Alvaro Arbeloa. A day after the team lost the Spanish Super Cup final against Barcelona, the club parted ways with the Basque coach eight months after his arrival and immediately appointed former Madrid player Arbeloa, who was coaching the reserve side."Real Madrid announces that, by mutual agreement between the club and Xabi Alonso, it has been decided to bring his tenure as first-team coach to an end," said the Los Blancos in a statement.In a separate statement Madrid then announced Arbeloa would take Alonso's place, without specifying the length of the 42-year-old's contract. "Arbeloa has been the coach of Castilla since June 2025 and has developed his entire coaching career in Real Madrid's academy since 2020," said Los Blancos.Arbeloa's first match at the helm is a Copa del Rey last-16 visit to face second-tier Albacete Wednesday. The Spaniard played 238 times for Madrid between 2009-2016, winning two Champions League titles and La Liga once, among other silverware.Arbeloa also lifted the World Cup with Spain in 2010, as well as the European Championship in 2008 and 2012, playing alongside Alonso for club and country. Alonso joined in June, replacing veteran Carlo Ancelotti, but Madrid struggled to find consistency under the Basque coach and are second in La Liga, four points behind Barcelona.Los Blancos were outplayed in a 3-2 defeat in Saudi Arabia on Sunday by Hansi Flick's side, the 44-year-old's last at the helm. Alonso was close to the sack towards the end of 2025 but a run of five consecutive wins kept him in his position, until the Super Cup defeat.Alonso had signed a three-season deal at the Bernabeu after leaving German side Bayer Leverkusen, with whom he won the Bundesliga in 2024. Real Madrid were thrashed 4-0 by Paris Saint-Germain in July in the Club World Cup semi-finals, which was an early setback for the coach.A 5-2 drubbing by Atletico Madrid in September was another blow for Alonso, although it was the team's only league defeat until December. Despite a Clasico win over Barcelona in October, it appeared president Florentino Perez had not fully warmed to Alonso, who had intended to bring a modern coaching approach to the team.While Ancelotti, who led Madrid to three Champions League wins across two spells in charge, was hailed for his man-management, Alonso was appointed for his tactical nous. Early on during his time in charge Alonso said the "rock'n'roll" was about to begin, but it never came, with few entertaining attacking displays, despite the superb output of French superstar Kylian Mbappe, La Liga's top scorer.Madrid struggled through a run of poor form amid an injury crisis, losing at home against Celta Vigo, and away at Liverpool in Europe, as well as drawing several domestic games. In that period many of the tactical ideas Alonso had tried to implement, including high pressing, faded away, amid reports some star players had fallen out with him.Brazilian wingers Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo Goes dropped out of form, going several months without finding the net. Spanish media also said Alonso would be ousted if they failed to beat Manchester City in the Champions League in December.Madrid lost against Pep Guardiola's side but the performance enough of an improvement that Alonso was given more time to try and save his job. However, the defeat by Barca in Jeddah was the final straw for Madrid, who agreed a deal with Alonso for him to depart.

Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso praised Kylian Mbappe for his stellar form this season, as the French forward tops both the La Liga and Champions League scoring charts ahead of Wednesday's home clash with Juventus. Mbappe, 26, who joined Real from Paris St Germain last season, has scored 10 goals in nine LaLiga matches and five in two Champions League appearances, alongside three goals for the French national team this term. His form has helped Real make a strong start under Alonso, winning 10 of their 11 games across all competitions. The Spanish side lead LaLiga with 24 points, two ahead of Barcelona, and have secured maximum points in the Champions League. "It's not just the goals," Alonso told reporters. "His influence is almost as important in terms of his teammates following him with and without the ball. He's helping us. He's scored goals everywhere. The influence, as well as the goals, is what the team needs." Real face a struggling Juve side who have not won in more than a month and sit seventh in the Serie A standings, four points behind leaders AC Milan. However, Alonso warned against taking the Italians lightly. "We're on alert for Juve tomorrow. Any Italian team that's struggling can be dangerous. We must not forget history. Juve are a big club, both now and in the past. They have some very good players," he said. "It's a European classic. They have faced each other many times, and I’ve played in some of those games. We feel very prepared. We want our third Champions League victory and to get off to a great start. We need the stadium. People go to the Bernabeu wanting to see big games. We have to give them what they want so that they respond in kind." Courtois slams La Liga over plans for Barca-Villarreal Miami match Meanwhile, Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has launched a scathing attack on LaLiga and its President Javier Tebas, criticising the decision to stage Barcelona's away match with Villarreal in Miami on December 20, saying it "distorts the competition”. The game, set to take place at the Hard Rock Stadium, would be the first La Liga fixture held outside Spain and the first European league match staged abroad. While European governing body UEFA reluctantly approved the plan, Real Madrid and other LaLiga teams' players have expressed their opposition, with Courtois leading the charge.
