All-rounder Will Jacks starred with both bat and ball as England overwhelmed Sri Lanka by 89 runs in the first one-day international at Chester-le-Street on Tuesday.His quickfire 46 not out helped take the hosts to a competitive 265 all out after they lost momentum following the exit of captain Harry Brook for 67.Off-spinner Jacks then took a fine 5-22 in seven overs, including three dismissals in the final over for his maiden five-wicket haul in ODIs.Sri Lanka were dismissed for 176 with 13 overs to spare as England went 1-0 up in this three-match series.The tourists made a positive start to their pursuit of a target of 266.But after Josh Tongue had Pathum Nissanka caught behind for 27 to leave Sri Lanka 48-2, the innings stalled, with Pavan Rathnayake taking 23 balls for a 13 that ended when he caught low down at cover by Tom Banton off Jamie Overton.And 84-3 then became 85-4 when Jacks had Charith Asalanka lbw missing a sweep.Sri Lanka captain Kusal Mendis fell in similar fashion when he too was lbw attempting to sweep Jacks for 42 off 60 balls, with his side faltering at 105-6.Jacks's treble strike then ended the match. WELLALAGE TRIED TO REVIVE THE INNINGS Dunith Wellalage tried to revive the innings with 45 until he skyed Jacks to mid-on.Two balls later, Jacks dismissed Asitha Fernando for nought before producing his best delivery of the over to clean bowl last man Dilshan Madushanka for a golden duck with a classic off-break.Earlier, leg-spinner Sachindu Colombage took an impressive 3-44 on his Sri Lanka debut, including the prize wickets of Joe Root and Jos Buttler.England, despite a tricky pitch on which the ball was not coming onto the bat, were on course for a large total at 182-3 in the 32nd over after Brook won the toss.Sri Lanka, however, then took three quick wickets to reduce them to 199-6.But Jacks's 47-ball innings, featuring four consecutive fours off Dushmantha Chameera, bolstered England's total, albeit they failed to bat out their full 50 overs.Test skipper Root and Brook had previously shared a third-wicket partnership of 68.Root, however, was eventually dismissed for the first time in five ODI innings -- a sequence spanning 404 runs -- when he was bowled playing back for 44 to Colombage.But Brook continued his fine form from the T20 series with a 49-ball fifty including six fours.Brook carved seamer Chameera straight to deep cover before Colombage had the dangerous Buttler lbw for 31.The second game of the series takes place at Headingley on Thursday. BRIEF SCORESEngland 265 (Brook 67, Jacks 46*, Colombage 3-44, Asitha 3-53) beat Sri Lanka 176 (Wellalage 45, Mendis 42, Jacks 5-22) by 89 runs 

Accomplished all-rounder Rachin Ravindra is in doubt for New Zealand's home series against India following a "freak accident" while filming a commercial shoot, New Zealand Cricket announced on Saturday.Team management said Ravindra dislocated his shoulder while attempting to take a diving catch during a promotional event involving the host broadcaster on Wednesday.A statement said the 26-year-old has been cleared of major structural damage but it is "unclear" if he will play a part in the five-match T20 series starting on October 22.Five one-day internationals and two Tests follow shortly afterwards.New Zealand's performance manager Mike Sandle said Ravindra landed awkwardly on a safety mat during filming."It was a really unfortunate injury," Sandle said."We're gutted for Rachin and our key priority is making sure he recovers well and gets back on the field as soon as he can."As with all commercial shoots involving our players, the activities were agreed in advance by all parties, with appropriate safety measures in place."It was a bit of a freak accident, and we'll continue to review our processes around events like this in the future."Ravindra, a left-handed batsman and spin bowler, has been a mainstay of New Zealand teams across all three formats since his debut in 2021, playing 115 international matches.New Zealand coach Rob Walter said Ravindra's rehabilitation will be carefully managed, ahead of the Indian visit, which is followed by a four-Test series in Australia."With a heavy schedule of Test cricket in the next six months, we don't want to rush Rachin back sooner than we need to," Walter said. 

New Zealand all-rounder Mitchell Santner said he turned down a lucrative offer from the Big Bash League to focus on the international schedule."The offer was good, I'm not going to lie," the 34-year-old told the New Zealand Herald. "They knew it would have to be a good offer for me to entertain it with contracting and what would come up."I did entertain the thought of it, but coming back to what we've got coming up, even if I'm not going to play every game of Test cricket I still feel like there's a role for me."New Zealand have home white-ball and Test series against India and a Test tour of Australia coming up this year.Santner said he also had to consider how playing in Australia's domestic Twenty20 competition would have impacted his role as captain of New Zealand's white-ball sides."I don't want to give up captaincy," he said. "If that was part of the deal, it was a no-brainer for me."There were chats that it could have worked. But for me, sitting without a central contract and trying to captain, I don't know if that would sit right at this stage."We've got a World Cup next year, a T20 World Cup in New Zealand the year after. That's something I still want to be part of. And if I'm still leading the team then, awesome."Other players, including Devon Conway and Lockie Ferguson, have opted to go on casual contracts with New Zealand Cricket, allowing them to take part in franchise leagues while remaining available for international duty."There's no judgment with guys taking casual deals," Santner said. "We aren't going to keep up with the money for some of these other opportunities going around."If it is a casual contract, that's the way to keep guys invested and playing for New Zealand; that's what we want."
