Piranesi’s family legacy finds new chapter in Doha

A chance encounter in Geneva revived a decades-old family connection, as Piranesi returned to Doha with new creations shaped by colour, architecture and generational craftsmanship at Doha Jewellery and Watches Exhibition (DJWE) 2026 this year.For Julian Hajibay, managing director of the family-run fine jewellery house Piranesi, the brand’s relationship with Qatar is more than a business journey: it is a story of two families whose connection stretches back decades and was unexpectedly rediscovered.Speaking to Gulf Times at the Alfardan Jewellery pavilion, Hajibay recalled how a meeting in Geneva five years ago eventually brought Piranesi to Doha and revived an older family relationship.Piranesi is among the brands exhibiting at the Alfardan Jewellery pavilion at this year’s exhibition, which runs until October 3 at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Centre.Hajibay said he first met Ali Alfardan during a small jewellery exhibition in Geneva, without initially knowing who his visitor was.“He asked me for the price, he said okay, another item, and then next thing I know, he shakes my hand, he says I’ll see you in three weeks,” Hajibay recalled.The connection became even more remarkable when Hajibay returned to New York and told his mother, designer and Piranesi President Mimi Hajibay, about the Qatari family they had met.“She said the name Alfardan sounds familiar, I think we might have done business with them,” he said.Old paper records from the late 1980s confirmed that instinct.Hajibay said the documents showed that Alfardan’s father had previously worked with his late father, creating a family connection that predated the younger generation’s meeting in Geneva.“It was almost meant to be that our paths crossed again, and we rejuvenated the relationship,” he said.That renewed relationship eventually led Piranesi to Doha and, according to Hajibay, opened doors to markets across the Gulf, including Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the UAE.“We’re grateful for Mr Alfardan for graciously inviting us that first year, and bringing us to this market, and to the Qatari people for welcoming us,” he said.At the DJWE this year, Piranesi is placing the spotlight on its Fiora and Dome collections, with both reflecting the design philosophy of Mimi Hajibay.The Fiora collection, which has evolved over the years, has been expanded with ear cuffs that can be worn without pierced ears, alongside high jewellery sets featuring diamonds and blue sapphires.Hajibay said the collection was designed with changing generations of clients in mind.“When the next generation, not only of Piranesi entered the business, but as well as the next generation for our clients, they want to start buying jewellery and gifts for their children, that’s where the Fiora Collection came to be,” he said.The floral design draws inspiration from Mimi Hajibay’s French garden, with its four petals representing the four corners of a French garden.The pieces are intended to move between everyday wear and more formal occasions.Alongside the floral influence is Piranesi’s fascination with architecture.Hajibay said his mother’s appreciation for Italian architecture, particularly historic domed structures, inspired the Dome collection.“She always goes back to her roots in Italy, and she says nothing in the world is like the Italian architecture of old, where you have the dome vaulted ceilings,” he said.That architectural influence can also be seen in the gemstones themselves, including a sugarloaf emerald cuff Hajibay described as a high-jewellery piece valued at more than QR3mn.For Hajibay, however, the value of Piranesi’s work lies as much in continuity as in individual pieces.“Timeless luxury generation to generation” remains the family’s guiding idea, he said, a philosophy reflected not only in the jewellery, but in the relationship between two families that unexpectedly found their way back to each other.

Alfardan Jewellery looks to new generation while keeping legacy

Alfardan Jewellery is reshaping its creative direction to engage a younger generation while preserving the heritage and identity that have defined the family business, its vice-president and creative director Dana Alfardan said. Speaking to Gulf Times on the sidelines of the Doha Jewellery and Watches Exhibition (DJWE) 2026, Alfardan said the luxury house is evolving its storytelling, imagery and aesthetics as the next generation of the family became increasingly involved in the business. Alfardan, who is also a prominent Qatari composer and cultural artist, said that her multidisciplinary background had reinforced the importance of looking beyond traditional boundaries in both creativity and leadership. “I think in today’s world it’s very important to be multifaceted,” she said. “There is no one way of doing things, but also things are not two-dimensional anymore. We have to go beyond the confines of conventional storytelling.” In an increasingly competitive luxury market, Alfardan said brands needed to develop distinctive identities rather than rely solely on conventional approaches. “There are just so many products out on the market,” she said. “So how do you stand out? How do you maintain your distinctive personality? It’s to generate a multifaceted, multilayered, 3D approach.” For Alfardan, innovation begins with a clear understanding of where a brand comes from. “What really sets us apart right now, today, in a globalised world, is our distinctive identity,” she said. “Our heritage and our identity is at the core, and we build everything around that into a global, multifaceted house.” Alfardan’s experience in music and the creative industries has also shaped her approach to jewellery, where heritage, emotion and storytelling can be expressed through another artistic medium. She said the house was now particularly focused on strengthening its connection with younger consumers as the third generation of the family assumes a greater role in the business. “I represent the third generation of my family business,” Alfardan said, noting that her sisters are also increasingly involved. Her sister has been designing Noudar Jewellery for around 15 years, while another sister, Juju, is also joining the business. As a result, Alfardan said, “the narrative is shifting. The rhetoric is shifting. The approach that we’re taking is shifting”. “The imagery, the aesthetics are shifting,” she added, explaining that the objective was to “bridge the gap between Alfardan and a younger generation”. Yet, for Alfardan, modernisation does not mean abandoning the foundations of the house. “Legacy is what gives the brand meaning,” she said. “Legacy is what gives the brand value. And legacy is what creates that distinctive profile that everybody can rely on.” She also linked legacy to consistency and trust, saying that maintaining core values and messaging gives a brand the transparency and reliability that audiences can depend on. At the same time, Alfardan acknowledged that the luxury industry operates in a rapidly changing environment. “We are in a fast-paced, evolving world,” she said. “The challenge is to adapt while maintaining your core values, your core identity.” For her, that balance comes naturally to the family business. “We are naturally forward-looking. We are naturally always looking to the future,” Alfardan said. “But at the same time, we have this natural capacity to maintain the respect for where we come from.” Her vision positions Alfardan Jewellery at the intersection of heritage and contemporary creativity, with the next generation helping shape how a longstanding Qatari luxury house communicates with an evolving audience.

Casato brings Italian elegance to Doha with new boutique

After the opening of its first boutique in Riyadh, Casato inaugurates its second boutique at Doha Festival City, within the Alfardan Jewellery.The DNA of Maison Casato is a refined blend of elements, evident in the design and craftsmanship of its jewels and boutiques, where timeless Italian style, harmonious volumes, and innovative elegance come to life.The concept and design of the new Casato’s luxury space in Doha were entrusted to Alessandra Lavinato, who has masterfully highlighted the signature that defines the brand across multiple aspects of the project.The boutique features ceramics inspired by the ancient techniques of Venetian tradition, adorned with a delicate motif recalling dragonfly wings – the symbol and muse of Casato’s collections.This motif flows gracefully throughout space, from bronze-toned glass elements to the carefully designed lighting that decorates the ambience, creating an elegant dialogue between nature and jewellery.Casato founder and designer Federico Gauttieri envisioned the Doha boutique as a refined jewel box, perfectly designed to showcase and celebrate the artistry and craftsmanship of its Italian-designed creations.The new boutique presents some of Casato’s most iconic collections: Mikou, inspired by the charming narrow streets of Mykonos, with delicate details combined in innovative and unique designs; Mikoulette, a sparkling celebration of diamonds, sapphires, and emeralds; the legendary Boutique collection, a timeless expression of Casato’s vision; and Maureen, the majestic collection that marks a new chapter in fine jewellery, capturing the dreams of every woman.These collections, among others and alongside exclusive new pieces, will be unveiled during the opening event on February 8 and 9, celebrating the boutique’s debut.There is no success without a diva.Thus Casato celebrates the success of the Mikou collection by introducing its red carpet version: here is Mikoulette.An ultra-exclusive selection of new jewels that retain the original shape, illuminating it with a feast of diamonds and lights of sapphires and emeralds.The volumes of Mikoulette jewellery do not increase; the design is instead collected in its most precious essence, this time Casato has created a true distillate of wearable wonder.Gold, diamonds and enamel come together in Mikou.Their mission is to become the protagonists of every woman’s beauty.The unusual silhouette of the design is a clear reference to the small Greek streets of Mykonos, which smell of sun and saltiness, symbols of freedom in our imagination.The east wind reaches Italy to blow into these jewels, mixing exotic influences with the land of the dolce-vita.Thanks to the craftsmanship that forged it, the design of Yasmeen creations is a hymn to lightness, with magnificent volumes combined with easy-to-wear structures.Each piece of jewellery seems to fly with diamond-covered wings, as sumptuous and free as the woman on whom it will choose to rest.The scent of the salty sea is in the air and the waves keep the beat of the Dolce Vita summer.Portofino is the icon of this famous Italian tempo made of freedom and allure, suspended between reality and fantasy.“The Original” is internationally recognised as a term used to announce an invention that marks a moment of change in history; in fashion, it’s the beginning of a new style.Casato’s “Maureen the Original” is the collection that marks the before and after in the world of jewellery.Its majestic pieces proudly display their innovative design, floating into every woman’s desires until they become reality on her fingers.“Back to Love” is a call to the most ancient and eternal feeling: love that connects, that returns, that embraces.The heart of the collection is the washer, which is reinterpreted in two variants – woven and round – a symbol of continuity, harmony and unbreakable bond.The soft, embracing chains evoke the intimate and cozy hug of lovers, transforming each piece of jewellery into a message to wear.The protagonist stones, the colourless and brown diamonds, create contrasts that instead of clashing with each other enhance one another, thus conveying the beauty of differences and the strength of the unity.
