The Qatar Racing & Equestrian Club (QREC) Monday announced its full readiness for the launch of the HH The Amir Sword Festival at Al Rayyan Racecourse, which will run over four days from Wednesday until Saturday. The programme will comprise two days of racing on the sand track, followed by two days on the turf.To mark this readiness, a press conference was held today at QREC, attended by Bader bin Mohammed al-Darwish, Acting Chief Executive Officer of QREC, Ahmed al-Sheebani, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, and Abdulla al-Kubaisi, Racing Manager.Representatives of the Festival’s sponsors were also present, including Nasr Jairoudi, General Manager of Alfardan Premier Motors, Hassan Youssef al-Obaidly, Director of Programs at the Social and Sports Activities Support Fund (DAAM), Ahmed Abdullah al-Attiyah, Director of Public Relations at the Qatar Media Corporation, and Faisal bin Khalid al-Otaibi, Chairman of Loom, the festival’s marketing partner.Ready for the flagship festivalSpeaking during the press conference, al-Darwish, said: “I would like to confirm that all organisational and logistical arrangements for this year’s HH The Amir Sword Festival have been completed, including the full readiness of the Al Rayyan Racecourse and the entire infrastructure of the QREC.”He added: “The Festival features a total of 32 races across the four days. It begins with two days of sand-track racing, bringing together the leading sand specialists among Purebred Arabians and Thoroughbreds. Attention then switches to the turf on the third day, which includes one of the Festival’s most important races, dedicated to local breeders. The Festival concludes with a series of major feature races, highlighted by the HH The Amir Sword and the HH The Amir Trophy, each carrying total prize money of $2.5mn. Notably, the HH The Amir Trophy will be staged this year as an International Group 2 contest for the first time, having previously held Group 3 status.”He confirmed that the HH The Amir Trophy for Thoroughbreds and the HH The Amir Sword for Purebred Arabians will both be run on the closing day, as Races 3 and 4 on the card.Al-Darwish noted that this year’s edition holds particular significance for Al Ghadeer, owned by Al Shaqab Racing, who will be seeking not only to defend his title, but also to secure the HH The Amir Sword for a third consecutive time. Achieving that feat would see the horse complete the Doha Triple Crown for the third time, an unprecedented achievement.Addressing the new elements of this year’s renewal of the Festival, al-Darwish said: “Among the additions to the programme are several new races, including the Middle-Distance Cup –a Local Purebred Arabian Handicap (85-105) over 1700m, the Sand Sprint Cup – a Thoroughbred Handicap (85-105) over 1200m, and the Qatar International Thoroughbred Handicap Cup (90-110) over 2400m. We are confident that competition among owners, trainers and jockeys will exceed expectations, given the high level of challenge across the programme. We wish all participants the very best as they compete for the season’s most prestigious honours.” 

Defending champions Al Gharafa will face Al Kharaitiyat, while last season’s runners-up Al Rayyan take on Al Khor in the Round of 16 of the 54th edition of the Amir Cup following the draw ceremony held Tuesday.Sixteen teams were involved in the draw - 12 from the Qatar Stars League and four Second Division sides that progressed from the preliminary round, namely Al Sailiya, Al Waab, Al Markhiya and Al Kharaitiyat. The winners of Al Gharafa versus Al Kharaitiyat will meet the victors of the Al Ahli versus Umm Salal tie in the quarter-finals.Elsewhere, Al Rayyan will play Al Khor, with the winners set to face Al Wakrah or Al Sailiya. Al Shamal was drawn against Qatar SC, while Al Sadd take on Al Markhiya, and Al Duhail face Al Waab with Al Arabi meeting Al Shahania in the remaining ties. Quarter-final pairings will follow a fixed bracket format leading to the semi-finals and final.Following the draw, coaches highlighted the challenges of the knockout format. Al Gharafa coach Pedro Martins said: "There are no easy teams even the Second Division sides. They deserve our respect. In football, if you don't respect your opponents, you don't get success normally. In football any team can defeat the other team. So we need to respect and it will will not be an easy game. The tournament will be tough but we will work hard to repeat our success."**media[406941]**Al Rayyan coach Artur Jorge said: "In these kind of competitions, we don't have any easy game. It will be our first step towards the final which will be our goal as we did in the last season. We are happy with with the draw."Al Sadd coach Roberto Mancini said: "It's a knockout tournament and anything can happen in one game. We are Al Sadd and we try to win every event we can."The Qatar Football Association (QFA) confirmed that the Round of 16 matches will be played from February 12 to 15, with two games per day across Suhaim Bin Hamad, Hamad Bin Khalifa, Grand Hamad and Abdullah Bin Khalifa stadiums.The draw ceremony began with a short documentary film highlighting the history of the Amir Cup, showcasing past champions and memorable moments. Following this, the draw mechanism was explained. The draw was performed by Qatari football stars and Al Gharafa and Al Sadd club legends, Adel Khamis and Abdulnasser al-Obaidli. The event was presented by Ali al-Sallat, Head of Media in the Marketing and Communications Department of the QFA.**media[406942]**Ali Hamoud al-Nuaimi, Head of Competitions at the QFA, confirmed that tied matches will be decided by penalties and announced a Man of the Match award for each game, sponsored by Qatar International Islamic Bank, with a total value of QR130,000.This edition of the Amir Cup features an expanded format of 20 teams for the third consecutive time, a historic first for the competition. Previously limited to 17 clubs, the tournament now includes 12 from the Qatar Stars League and 8 from the Second Division, with the latter starting in a preliminary stage. Al Gharafa are the defending champions after defeating Al Rayyan 2-1 in last season’s final. Al Sadd remain the most successful club in the competition’s history with 19 titles. 

Al Shamal climbed to third in the Qatar Stars League following a 1-0 win over Al Rayyan, while Al Sailiya moved off the bottom with a 2-1 victory over Qatar SC Saturday.A second-half strike from Alex Collado proved enough for Al Shamal to take their tally to 24 points – seven behind leaders Al Gharafa and two adrift of defending champions Al Sadd, who are second in the table.At Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium, Collado struck in the 54th minute after Al Rayyan goalkeeper Mahmud Abunada had punched away a Baghdad Bounedjah attempt. Al Shamal also had two goals ruled out for offside deep in the match. Al Rayyan – on 23 points – slipped to fourth place, three ahead of fifth-placed Al Arabi.“We deserved the victory after we had a top performance,” Bounedjah said after the win. “Today’s match was exciting and featured physical clashes from both sides, and we knew that whoever scored the goal would win.”Meanwhile, Abdulrahman Mohamed and Diogo Amaro struck in the second half to give Al Sailiya a much-needed victory over Qatar SC at Grand Hamad Stadium.After a goalless first half, Al Sailiya moved into the lead when Mohamed made the most of a fine assist provided by Abdulla Hussain Al Muftah in the 72nd minute. Qatar SC, however, hit back soon after, getting the equaliser through Pedro eight minutes later.Soon after, Eisa Ahmad Khaldi aimed for goal, but Al Sailiya goalkeeper Fahad Younis Baker made a diving save and pushed the ball towards a lurking Amaro, who struck his team’s winning goal in the 84th minute.The result gave Al Sailiya valuable three points, moving them away from the dreaded 12th spot to 10th with 11 points, while Qatar SC remained seventh on 17 points.
