Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic have pulled out of next month's ATP Montreal Masters, organizers Tennis Canada said Friday.In a packed schedule, world number one Sinner and 24-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic both had deep runs at Wimbledon earlier this month, where Italian Sinner won the men's title and Serbian Djokovic reached the semi-finals."After carefully considering all the factors together with my team, we have made the difficult decision to withdraw from Montreal," Sinner said in a statement."It is never easy to miss such an important event, but we believe this is the right decision to prioritize my health."The Montreal men's event, which takes place August 1-13, is an ATP Masters 1000 tournament, and a key pre-US Open stopping point.The parallel women's WTA 1000 tournament takes place this year in Toronto, with the two competitions switching between the cities on alternate years.Organizers expressed disappointment at the last-minute withdrawals, noting that the two men also pulled out of last year's event in Toronto."We respect their decisions and understand that, with such a demanding schedule, players' health must remain the priority," tournament director Valerie Tetreault said in a statement."That said, we believe the frequency of these last-minute withdrawals in the last few years raises a broader issue for our sport.""Masters 1000 events are among the flagship tournaments on the tour, and fans rightfully expect to see the world's best compete."Tetreault said organizers are in discussions with the ATP over "adjustments" that are "needed in the near future to better protect the integrity of our Masters 1000 events while remaining mindful of the realities players face."World number two Alexander Zverev - this year's French Open champion and Wimbledon finalist - is now expected to be the Montreal top seed, followed by Quebec native Felix Auger-Aliassime.Third-ranked Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz had already withdrawn from Montreal over a lingering wrist injury.He is targeting a return at the Cincinnati ATP Masters 1000 tournament, which begins immediately after Montreal.The US Open, the year's final Grand Slam, starts on August 30 in New York. 

Stefanos Tsitsipas ended a 16-month wait for an ATP Tour title when the Greek defeated Belgium's Raphael Collignon 6-4 6-7(3) 6-3 to win the Swiss Open in ⁠Gstaad on Sunday.The victory was Tsitsipas' first title since he beat ⁠Canada's Felix Auger-Aliassime in the Dubai Tennis Championships final in March 2025 and the 13th ATP singles crown of his career."I would like to start by mentioning how amazing the final was today," Tsitsipas said. "It's been a long time so it does mean a ⁠lot to me."The 27-year-old, a former world number three currently ranked 85th in the world, produced a strong serving performance in the two-hour 17-minute contest, firing four aces without a double fault. He won 21 of 29 points on his second serve and saved two of the four break ⁠points he faced.Tsitsipas took the ⁠opening set ⁠before first-time ATP Tour finalist Collignon fought back to level the match in a second-set tiebreak. The Greek regained control in the decider, however, securing the break he needed to seal the title.The triumph provides a timely confidence boost for two-time Grand Slam finalist Tsitsipas as he looks to build momentum ahead of the U.S. Open, which begins on August 30.  

World number two Jannik Sinner made a seamless return to the ATP Tour on Monday, shrugging off the windy conditions in Doha to cruise past Tomas Machac in the opening round of the Qatar Open. In his first competitive appearance since his Australian Open title defense ended in the semi-finals, the Italian looked refreshed and ruthless, easing to a 6-1, 6-4 victory over the 31st-ranked Czech. It was a convincing statement from the four-time Grand Slam champion, who showed no lingering effects from his recent loss to Novak Djokovic at Melbourne Park. Sinner was imperious behind his delivery, dropping just six points across nine service games throughout the contest. He raced through the opening set in under 30 minutes, dismantling Machac’s defenses with clinical precision before the Czech could find his footing. The second set proved to be a tighter affair as Machac began to grapple with the conditions and Sinner’s pace. The underdog managed an explosive start to the set and saved multiple match points in a gritty ninth game that featured scintillating winners from both sides of the net. However, a single break in the fifth game gave Sinner the advantage he needed. Despite needing five match points to finally close the door, the Italian sealed the win with a composed hold of serve. Speaking after the match, Sinner acknowledged the challenges posed by the weather. “Today was a little bit worse than yesterday,” Sinner said of the windy Doha conditions. “But you have to adapt to every situation and condition on the court. We also played a couple of matches before, so I knew a little [about] what to expect. I felt good on court today. Physically I feel good. Every match is going to get tougher, so hopefully I will be ready for the next one.” Sinner’s victory sets up a second-round clash with Alexei Popyrin. The Australian was equally dominant in his opener, sweeping aside Qatari wild card Mubarak Shannan Zayid 6-0, 6-2. With Carlos Alcaraz looming as the top seed this week, Sinner will look to maintain his high-efficiency form as he progresses through the draw. Elsewhere on Monday, resilience was the theme of the day as both Jakub Mensik and Arthur Fils booked their spots in the second round by rallying from a set down. Sixth seed Mensik fought past qualifier Jan Choinski 6-7(6), 6-2, 6-4, while Fils overcame Kamil Majchrzak 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-4, ensuring a competitive start to the week in Doha. On Tuesday, world number one Carlos Alcaraz takes on Top 30 star Arthur Rinderknech in his opening match in Doha.
