Rayyan cruise past Oman’s Al Nahda

Al Rayyan overpowered Al Nahda Club to secure a dominant 4-1 win in their AFC Champions League Two Group C clash.The win takes the Qatari side to six points, putting them in a strong position at the midway stage while Oman’s Al Nahda remained rooted at the bottom with just a draw to their name.Al Rayyan took lead in the third minute as Wesley Ribeiro dribbled past one defender then saw his shot take a slight deflection off Ghanim al-Habashi but enough to wrong-foot goalkeeper Faiyz al-Rusheidi.The Qatari side continued to press on and in the 19th minute, doubled their advantage when Ibrahim Mohammadali floated in a cross from the right for defender Youssef Ayman to head past Al Rusheidi.Al Rayyan missed a great chance to extend their lead two minutes into the second half after Gabriel Pereira released Aleksandar Mitrovic into space, only for the Serbian to rush his effort wide.Al Nahda were awarded a penalty in the 49th minute after Andre Amaro used his hand to block Jamal al-Washi’s shot but Jameel al-Yahmadi’s decision to send his spot-kick straight down the middle was read by Mahmoud Abunada, who made the save with his feet.The home side were given another chance from 12 yards in the 59th minute following Julien de Sart’s foul on Valon Ahmedi and this time, Mohammed Mubarak made no mistake with his penalty.Any hope that Al Nahda had that the goal would spark a comeback came crashing down five minutes later when Pereira’s strike from outside the box packed too much power and accuracy for al-Rusheidi.The home side went down to 10 men in the 80th minute when Harib al-Saadi picked up his second yellow card for a strong challenge on Ribeiro as Al Rayyan took the opportunity to add a fourth through Mohammadali seven minutes later to wrap up the win.

Taawoun rally past Rayyan

Al Rayyan suffered their first defeat in the AFC Champions League Two as they went down 2-1 to Saudi Arabia’s Al Taawoun in their Group B clash in Buraidah on Wednesday.Ahmed al-Ganehi scored for the Qatari side, but Mohammed al-Kuwaykibi and Younes El Bahraoui struck for the hosts to help them climb to the top of the group with four points from two matches.Al Rayyan had opened their campaign with a thrilling 4-3 victory over Jordan’s Al Faisaly, while Al Taawoun began with a 1-1 draw against Oman’s Al Nahda.Al Taawoun looked the livelier of the two sides, with Marin Petkov firing wide from distance in the third minute before al-Kuwaykibi saw his long-range effort blocked.El Bahraoui then blazed over the bar in the 16th minute but the hosts’ pressure eventually paid off three minutes later when Abdulrahman Hindi recycled a corner kick into the path of El Mahdioui who set up al-Kuwaykibi, who drilled his shot past Al Rayyan goalkeeper Mahmud Abunada.Al-Kuwaykibi threatened again in the 29th minute, firing wide from Ibrahim Mahnashi’s pass, but Al Rayyan drew level three minutes later when Wesley teed up al-Ganehi to finish from the centre of the box following a swift counter-attack.Parity lasted just six minutes as al-Kuwaykibi turned provider for El Bahraoui, who restored Al Taawoun’s lead with a long-range strike.Al Taawoun continued to threaten after the break, with El Bahraoui’s close-range header from al-Ghamdi’s cross blocked in the 47th minute before Petkov forced Abunada into a low save eight minutes later.Al Rayyan introduced Aleksandar Mitrovic and Gregore for Wesley and al-Ganehi just before the hour mark, but the hosts remained on the front foot, with the Qatari side coming agonisingly close to an equaliser in the 87th minute.Andre Amaro rose highest to meet Otavios’s delivery of a set-piece situation, only for his headed attempt to smash against the bar as they finished empty-handed.Lucescu rues missed chances after Sadd defeat to HilalMeanwhile, Al Sadd coach Razvan Lucescu rued his side’s failure to capitalise on their chances after they suffered a second consecutive defeat in the AFC Champions League Elite, losing 2-0 to Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal SFC at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium on Tuesday.Despite matching the Saudi giants for much of the contest, Al Sadd were let down by poor finishing and an impressive display by Al Hilal goalkeeper Yassine Bounou. The Qatar champions remain at the bottom of the West Zone standings without a point after two matches.“I saw my team working hard and diligently and they went toe-to-toe with the opposition,” said Lucescu. “We created significant, dangerous chances, but unfortunately, we didn't capitalise on those moments as well as we could have. We are also going through a peculiar phase following this long break, especially with some players returning from injury and not yet reaching peak physical fitness. Essentially, we are now resuming the work and effort we put in during the summer preparation period, albeit under different circumstances.”Al Hilal coach Simone Inzaghi, meanwhile, praised his players for securing a second successive victory despite limited preparation time following their Saudi Pro League match against Al Ittihad Club on Saturday.Goals from Ollie Watkins and Ruben Neves sealed the win for the visitors, who relied heavily on video analysis rather than on-field training sessions ahead of the encounter in Doha.“I am happy with the players' performance, we played a great match and controlled most of the proceedings,” said Inzaghi. “I witnessed a fantastic performance from the team. Given the limited time available, our preparations relied more on video analysis of the opponents than on on-field training sessions. This away match was by no means easy, and I thank our wonderful fans for their presence and continued support of the team.”

The match against Al Faisaly marks Al Rayyan’s first appearance in the AFC Champions League Two, with the Qatari club last featuring in the AFC Cup in 2010.

Moreno demands best from Al Rayyan against Al Faisaly

Al Rayyan coach Vicente Moreno has urged his players to produce their best as they begin their AFC Champions League Two campaign against Jordanian side Al Faisaly at Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium on Wednesday night. “We are eagerly looking forward to playing against Al Faisaly tomorrow in the AFC Champions League Two,” Moreno said at the pre-match press conference. “We know we are facing a good team and that it will be a very difficult match, but we are playing at home and are determined to secure a win in our opening game.” The match marks Al Rayyan’s first appearance in the AFC Champions League Two, with the Qatari club last featuring in the AFC Cup in 2010. Their opponents, two-time AFC Cup winners Al Faisaly, finished runners-up in the Jordanian Pro League last season. Al Rayyan have made a strong start to the Qatar Stars League and sit second after four matches, just two points behind leaders Al Sadd. Moreno believes that form can provide confidence, but stressed that his players must remain focused on the task ahead. “Past results give us great confidence heading into tomorrow’s match. It is very important for us, but our focus right now is solely on tomorrow’s game. Previous matches are over; right now, we know we must think only about tomorrow’s match,” he said. Moreno acknowledged the challenge of facing an opponent from a different league, saying Al Rayyan did not have a complete picture of Al Faisaly’s level. “It is a different competition. We are ready to play in the league, ready for the Qatar Cup, and ready to face Al Faisaly in the Champions League,” he said. “However, it is true that sometimes I do not know the opponent’s exact level because they play in a different league. We are entering tomorrow’s match without knowing their precise level, which is a challenge for us. But I repeat: we are ready, we respect the opponent greatly, and I have immense confidence in my players. I told them that if we want to win tomorrow, we must be at our very best.” Al Rayyan have conceded only two goals in their four league matches, and Moreno was pleased with the team's defensive solidity while calling for greater efficiency in attack. “We have a very good defence, and certainly a very good attack as well, because we are Al Rayyan, and Al Rayyan possesses very talented players,” he said. “However, we always want to improve our performance. Ideally, we would not concede any goals, though that is very difficult to achieve. We want to improve and score more goals. In recent league matches, we created plenty of scoring opportunities, and we need to capitalise on those situations.” Moreno also provided an update on striker Aleksandar Mitrovic, who remains sidelined as he continues his recovery. “Mitrovic is currently sidelined. While he did begin training with us last week, he is only performing specific drills. He needs more training time to get up to speed, and I believe he could start playing after the upcoming break,” he said. “We also have a few players dealing with minor issues, and we will decide on their status tomorrow. It is normal to have players managing slight knocks from time to time.” Midfielder Julien De Sart said Al Rayyan were determined to make a strong start to their continental campaign. “We expect a tough match. We know we must give our best in every game to stand a chance of winning,” he said. “As the coach mentioned, we are entering this tournament with great ambition. It is an honour to play in the AFC Champions League Two. We will take it one match at a time and aim to go as far as possible.” De Sart, who has had to contend with injuries and time on the bench, said he was ready to contribute whenever called upon. “That’s football. I believe that throughout your career, you go through periods of injury or time on the bench, and you simply have to adapt to the circumstances,” he said. “I feel I am constantly improving; the more I play, the better I feel. So, if the coach needs me tomorrow, I am ready, and if I’m on the bench, well, that’s just football. Regardless of how long I play, I will try to give my best in training and in matches. As I said, I am ready for however many minutes I play, whether it’s 10 minutes or 90. I will give my all, and the rest will follow.”
