* FIFA says selected agency would have four weeks to deliver analysis by September 11* Study would assess revenue impact from ticketing, sponsorship and media rights* UEFA and AFC leaders voiced opposition to 64-team plan last year  FIFA is studying whether to expand the World ​Cup from 48 to ‌64 teams for the 2030 edition, according to a document seen by ‌Reuters, in a ⁠move that could ‌reshape soccer's showpiece tournament when it ‌celebrates its centennial.World soccer's governing body wants to appoint an independent agency to assess ⁠the ambitious expansion plan, which would add another 16 nations to a tournament that had already grown from 32 to 48 teams in 2026."FIFA wishes to appoint an independent agency to determine whether and how expanding the FIFA World Cup from 48 to 64 participating national teams, starting with the 2030 edition, would impact on the tournament proposition," it said in a research brief.South American confederation CONMEBOL ​had officially proposed hosting the 2030 World Cup with 64 teams last year, allowing more countries the opportunity to join in the celebrations for the tournament's centennial edition.The 2026 edition in ‌the U.S., Canada and Mexico was ⁠the first since ​1998 to move away from the 32-team format, adding four more groups ​and an extra knockout round in the process, resulting in 104 matches over more than five weeks.The accelerated study comes on the heels of FIFA's plan to create a $20-billion subsidiary to run the World Cup and its other events with external investors, a move that has attracted criticism and a UEFA decision to boycott FIFA events.Reuters has contacted FIFA for comment.'NOT A GOOD IDEA'UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin said last year that expanding the World Cup to 64 teams was not a good idea.The European governing body's position has not changed since ‌then, while Asian Football Confederation President ‌Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al ⁠Khalifa had also voiced opposition, questioning last year where further expansion might end.FIFA's proposed ⁠analysis is meant to assess whether ⁠the proposed expansion can strengthen the tournament or whether concerns such as competition dilution, calendar congestion, operational complexity and market saturation outweigh the potential benefits.The study will examine the potential impact of expanding the tournament to 64 teams, including the effects on the competition, competitive balance, qualification, player welfare and the international calendar.It will also estimate the revenues ​that could be generated from ticket sales, sponsorship and media rights under the proposed format."The final recommendation should demonstrate not only whether a 64-team tournament can generate incremental value, but whether that value is sustainable," the document added.FIFA said a decision on selecting the agency would be made on August 14 and they would have only four weeks to deliver their analysis by September 11.The 2030 World Cup is being jointly hosted by Morocco, Portugal and Spain, while Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay will host ‌one match each to ​celebrate the tournament's 100th anniversary. 

Rescue teams including navy divers in Bangladesh have recovered 24 bodies from a bus that plunged into a river at a ferry crossing, officials said Thursday.The bus sank into the deep waters of the Padma river in Goalanda on Wednesday, about 65 kilometres (40 miles) west of the capital Dhaka. It had around 50 passengers on board, many of whom managed to escape.A fire service report said that 24 bodies, including those of five children, had been recovered by midday Thursday.Some were pulled out by fire service officers, others by locals who come to help, as well as by the navy divers."The bus was waiting to board a ferry, when it fell into the river," said Noor Jahan Begum, 35, who saw the accident."Some passengers got out of the bus, but their family members died, trapped inside."Deadly crashes are relatively common in the South Asian nation, because of poor roads, badly maintained vehicles and reckless driving.Bangladesh's Road Safety Foundation reported over 200 deaths during the just-concluded Eid holidays. In one incident, a train rammed into a bus, killing 12.The World Health Organisation says that while reported road traffic fatalities in Bangladesh are around 5,000 a year, it estimates that actual deaths are far higher, at more than 31,500, according to figures from 2023.That translates to more than 85 a day in the country of 170mn people.In neighbouring India, at least 13 people were killed in a bus crash Thursday in Andhra Pradesh state, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi called "tragic". The bus burst into flames, burning the bodies.India, with 1.4bn people, recorded more than 177,000 road traffic deaths in 2025, according to the roads ministry, or 485 a day. 

Ministry of Interior reports 8 new injuries Minor fire extinguished  in Industrial AreaPublic urged to heed early warning alerts The Ministry of Interior said Sunday that security forces and emergency teams are operating at full readiness across the country, deploying consistently to various areas in accordance with pre-approved readiness plans as the situation on the ground continues to evolve and demand a sustained operational response.In a series of updates issued throughout the day via official statements and posts on the X platform, the ministry confirmed that based on field reports and continuous on-the-ground assessments, eight additional injuries had been recorded since its last update, bringing the total number of casualties since the onset of the attack to 16.The ministry noted that the attacks had also resulted in limited material damage across various areas of the country, though no further details were provided on the specific locations or the full extent of that damage.In one confirmed incident, Civil Defence teams were dispatched to the Industrial Area after falling shrapnel from an intercepted missile triggered a minor fire in the zone. Crews dealt with the blaze swiftly and effectively, and the ministry confirmed that the incident did not result in any injuries. The response was described as part of the broader, coordinated activation of approved emergency plans that security authorities and Civil Defence teams, working in close coordination with relevant government entities, set in motion to safeguard public safety, ensure the continuity of essential services, and maintain full operational readiness to address any further emergencies as they arise.On the matter of early warning alerts, the ministry was emphatic, stressing that alert and early warning messages are activated solely when circumstances require additional urgent precautionary measures to protect public safety. It called on everyone to adhere to these alerts the moment they are issued and to comply fully and immediately with any instructions they contain, describing such compliance as vital to protecting both lives and property.The ministry also issued a clear and repeated call for the public to remain indoors and to limit movement strictly to cases of absolute necessity, warning against venturing out unnecessarily while operations are ongoing.Residents and citizens were urged in the strongest terms to keep roads and access routes clear at all times, refraining from congregating at assembly points or travelling to incident scenes, so that ambulance vehicles, Civil Defence units, and security patrols can carry out their duties without delay or obstruction.The public was also reminded to report any suspicious objects or unidentified debris immediately by calling 999, and to never approach such items under any circumstances.The ministry additionally warned against the spread of rumours and cautioned that circulating images or videos depicting the aftermath of incidents could expose individuals to legal liability. Official sources, it stressed, remain the only reliable channel for accurate and verified information.Specialised teams, the ministry concluded, remain fully deployed around the clock in coordination with all relevant authorities, committed to ensuring a rapid and effective response to any developments and to safeguarding the safety and wellbeing of the entire community.

Aya Mohamed etched her name in history by becoming the first Qatari woman to win the women’s singles title at the Arab Teams Table Tennis Championship in Casablanca, Morocco, Sunday. The 31-year-old defeated Jordan’s Tima Abu Yemen 3-2 in a thrilling final at the Mohammed V Indoor Complex, clinching Qatar’s 20th medal and fourth gold of the tournament.Mohamed also secured silver in doubles with Maryam Ali and another silver in the team event alongside Ali and Serena Sheikh.A pioneer for Qatari table tennis, Mohamed competed at the London 2012 Olympics and earlier this year, alongside Mohamed Abdulwahab, broke into the ITTF world’s top 100 in mixed doubles for the first time in Qatar’s history.Following her victory, Mohamed expressed pride in her achievement: “I am honored to be the first Qatari to win this title. This moment will stay in my memory forever.
