The Ministry of Transport (MOT) and Qatar Society of Engineers today signed a Memorandum of Understanding in the field of land transport.The MoU aims to strengthen collaboration in R&D in smart transportation, studies, road safety, and relevant laws and legislation.MOT's Assistant Undersecretary for Land Transport Affairs Eng. Abdullah Saif Al Sulaiti, and Chairperson of the Qatar Society of Engineers Eng. Amna Mohammed Al Naama signed the MoU today at MOT's offices.The MOT is strategically supporting innovation in areas of transportation, and cementing collaboration, partnership and expertise exchange in step with national policies and infrastructure development plans, guided by the MOT Strategy, National Development Strategy, and Qatar National Vision 2030.The MoU will contribute to enhancing national talents' expertise in road transportation by developing specialized training and holding workshops, educational sessions, and upskilling programs for capacity-building in mobility innovation. The personnel who perform engineering jobs at MOT’s Land Transport Affairs will also have access to training programs. 

Qatar’s instant payment infrastructure recorded a significant surge in activity during June, with the Fawran Instant Payment System posting substantial year-on-year growth in both transaction value and volume, according to the latest statistics released by the Qatar Central Bank (QCB).The figures highlight the accelerating adoption of digital payments in Qatar and the growing role of instant transfers in the country’s financial ecosystem. Accordingly, the total value of transactions processed through Fawran reached QR6.745bn in June 2026, compared with QR2.752bn in June 2025, an annual increase of 145%.In absolute terms, transaction value rose by around QR3.993bn over the 12-month period, meaning the value processed through the system was about 2.45 times higher than the level recorded in June last year.The transaction volumes also recorded strong growth, rising to 3.886mn in June this year, compared with 1.735mn in June 2025. This is an increase of 124%, or around 2.151mn additional transactions in just one year, which clearly indicates the rapidly expanding use of instant payments among individuals and businesses across the country.The increase in transaction value was faster than the rise in transaction volume, indicating that users were making more payments through the system in addition to transferring larger amounts on average. Based on the reported figures, the average transaction value increased from around QR1,586 in June 2025 to QR1,736 in June 2026, an increase of around 9.5%.The QCB's statistics indicate that the user base of system is expanding. The total number of registered accounts reached 3.884mn, underlining the broad adoption of instant payment services and the increasing integration of digital financial solutions into everyday transactions.Fawran forms part of Qatar’s broader digital payments infrastructure overseen by the QCB. The system enables customers to make instant transfers between participating bank accounts, supporting faster and more convenient movement of funds. Its availability around the clock and the use of different identifiers for beneficiaries are designed to make transfers more accessible while supporting efficient and secure digital transactions.The system’s rapid growth reflects a wider shift in consumer and business payment behaviour, as digital channels increasingly replace traditional methods of transferring money. The sharp increase in both transaction volume and value suggests that instant payments are becoming an increasingly important component of Qatar’s financial infrastructure, supporting faster transactions and greater convenience for users.The June 2026 figures also build on the growth recorded during the previous year. Fawran transaction value had already increased from QR2.752bn in June 2025 to QR5.092bn in December 2025, while the number of monthly transactions rose from 1.735mn to 3.187mn during the same period. The further increase to QR6.745bn and 3.886mn transactions in June 2026 indicates continued momentum in the adoption of instant payment services.Alongside instant payment services, the country’s payment ecosystem includes mobile payment solutions, electronic payment gateways, automated teller machine and point-of-sale networks, as well as systems supporting high-value interbank settlements.The latest figures provide a clear indication of the pace at which digital payments are becoming embedded in Qatar’s financial landscape. With QR6.745bn in transactions, 3.886mn transactions and 3.884mn registered accounts recorded in June 2026, Fawran is emerging as a major channel for fast digital money transfers. The annual growth rates of 145% in transaction value and 124% in transaction volume underscore the growing demand for instant, convenient and digitally enabled financial services, while reinforcing the QCB efforts to develop a modern and efficient payments ecosystem in support of the country’s broader digital transformation. 

Qatar Chamber has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Portuguese Industrial Association – Chamber of Commerce and Industry (AIP–CCI), aimed at strengthening cooperation between the two organisations.The signing ceremony, virtually via video conference, was led by Qatar Chamber acting general manager Ali Bu Sherbak al-Mansouri and Portuguese Industrial Association director Filomena Pina Perez.The MoU aims to promote business development, encourage investment in Qatar and Portugal, and support the establishment of company branches in both countries. It also seeks to foster joint efforts to capitalise on emerging international business opportunities in the current global economic environment.It places particular emphasis on market research, consultancy services, knowledge and expertise exchange, the promotion of trade delegations, and enhanced cooperation between Qatari and Portuguese companies.Al-Mansouri stated that the MoU represents an important step toward strengthening cooperation between the two organisations and further enhancing the economic and trade relations between Qatar and Portugal.He highlighted the strong and longstanding ties between Qatar and Portugal, noting that there are promising opportunities to expand cooperation between the private sectors of both countries.He noted that the agreement provides an effective framework for strengthening communication between Qatari and Portuguese businesses, facilitating the exchange of information, organising business meetings and trade missions, and exploring available investment opportunities.Al-Mansouri expressed his hope that this cooperation would contribute to increasing bilateral trade, encouraging mutual investments, and supporting the establishment of new joint ventures and partnerships in sectors of common interest.Perez said the signing of the MoU would help strengthen cooperation between the business communities of both countries, encourage the exchange of trade delegations, and stimulate reciprocal investment.She also expressed her hope that the coming period would witness visits by Qatari business delegations to Portugal to explore investment opportunities, particularly in the industrial sector, while noting the Portuguese side's strong interest in learning more about the investment opportunities available in Qatar. 

Oman and Bahrain made winning starts to their campaigns in the FIBA U18 Asia Cup Gulf Qualifiers, defeating Kuwait and Saudi Arabia respectively as the tournament tipped off at Al Gharafa Sports Hall yesterday. Organised by the Qatar Basketball Federation, the six-day competition runs from July 25 to 30 and features five Gulf nations - Qatar, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Oman - competing for two coveted places at the championship in India next month. The opening round produced two closely contested encounters, with Oman staging a remarkable second-half comeback to edge Kuwait 62-59, while Bahrain defeated Saudi Arabia 62-54 to join Oman at the top of the standings. Oman recovered from an 11-point halftime deficit to secure one of the most dramatic victories of the opening day. Kuwait controlled the first half, leading 22-13 after the opening quarter before extending the margin to 40-29 at the break. Oman gradually fought back by taking the third quarter 16-14 before unleashing a decisive 17-5 run in the final period. Tight defensive play, effective containment of Kuwait’s key players, and clinical fast-break execution proved decisive as Oman completed the comeback to earn their first two points of the tournament. Bahrain also opened its campaign on a winning note with a 62-54 victory over Saudi Arabia. Bahrain dominated the opening quarter 16-6, but Saudi Arabia responded strongly by claiming the second period 20-8 to take the momentum into halftime. Bahrain regained control after the interval with a commanding 21-11 third quarter, while both teams scored 17 points apiece in the final period, allowing Bahrain to seal an eight-point victory. Following the opening round, Oman and Bahrain sit jointly atop the standings with two points each, while Kuwait and Saudi Arabia have one point each. Hosts Qatar will begin their campaign in the second round of matches. Action resumes today, with Bahrain taking on Kuwait at 5:00pm, followed by Qatar’s opening game against Saudi Arabia at 7:00pm. Tomorrow’s schedule features Oman against Bahrain at 5:00pm before Qatar meets Kuwait at 7:00pm. Qatar’s will launch its campaign today against Saudi Arabia. The hosts will be aiming for a winning start as they seek one of the qualifying berths for the continental finals. The 12-player squad is captained by Abdullah Yassin and includes Tamim Ashraf Abouissa, Mishal Khalid al-Mughni, Moaz Omar Mousa, Azzam Mohamed Yaken, Ziad Tamer al-Johari, Mohamed Saeed Badri, Mahmoud Tamer Ibrahim, Amer Ibrahim Mousa, Owen Ikina, Youssef Walid Abdelqader and Shahi Mohamed. After a rest day, competition returns on Wednesday, July 29, with Saudi Arabia facing Kuwait at 5:00pm and Qatar playing Oman at 7:00pm. The tournament concludes on Thursday, July 30, with Oman meeting Saudi Arabia at 5:00pm, followed by Qatar against Bahrain at 7:00pm. The qualifiers serves as the pathway to the FIBA U18 Asian Championship, which will be held in Ahmedabad, India, in August. Played in a single round-robin format, each team contests four matches, earning two points for a win and one for a loss. The top two teams at the end of the competition will qualify for the continental championship, where four places at the 2027 FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup in the Czech Republic will also be at stake.

The State of Qatar strongly condemned the Houthi group's targeting of a Saudi vessel while it was sailing in the Red Sea, and termed it a serious violation of international maritime safety, a direct threat to global energy security, and a clear and blatant breach of international law.In a statement on Thursday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirmed that the continuation of these rejected attacks represents a dangerous escalation that threatens the security and stability of the region and undermines efforts to consolidate regional security and stability.The Ministry called upon the international community to fulfill its responsibilities regarding the implementation of relevant Security Council resolutions, foremost among them Resolution 2216 on Yemen and Resolution 2722 on the rights and freedom of navigation in the Red Sea. It emphasized that freedom of navigation in international waterways is a fundamental principle of international law and the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.It reiterated the State of Qatar's full solidarity with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and its support for all measures taken by the Kingdom to preserve its sovereignty, security, and interests, affirming that the security of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is an integral part of the security of the State of Qatar and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states.The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed the State of Qatar's appreciation for the ongoing efforts of the Sultanate of Oman to coordinate between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Yemeni parties, and the UN Special Envoy to Yemen, with the aim of resuming the political process and the roadmap in a way that achieves security and stability in the region.  

The State of Qatar, represented by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MOECC), participated in the meetings of the Scientific Committee of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), held in Geneva, Switzerland. Representatives of the States Parties, international organizations, and experts from various countries also participated.Director of the Wildlife Development Department at MOECC, Khalid Al Mohannadi headed the Ministry's delegation to the meetings.The delegation participated in discussions on several scientific and technical topics related to the protection of endangered species, strengthening the mechanisms for implementing the Convention, reviewing proposals for the listing of species, and discussing ways to develop supporting scientific evidence.Participation in these meetings reflects the State of Qatar's commitment to supporting international efforts aimed at conserving biodiversity and enhancing cooperation with States Parties and international organizations, thereby contributing to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and preserving natural resources for future generations.  

Qatar’s Rashid Saleh al-Athba produced a near-flawless display to win the men’s skeet gold medal at the ISSF World Cup Hangzhou 2026 on Thursday, edging Spain’s Jose Maria Mielgo Moneo in a thrilling final.In Hangzhou, al-Athba showcased exceptional consistency throughout the contest, hitting 35 of his 36 targets to clinch the title. The Qatari shooter carried a perfect score deep into the final before missing only his final target, by which time the gold medal had already been secured.The battle for the top step of the podium remained intense, with Mielgo Moneo matching al-Athba for much of the contest. The Spaniard finished with 34 hits, missing just two targets to settle for the silver medal after an outstanding performance.China's Lyu Jianlin delighted the home crowd by claiming the bronze medal with 29 hits. Lyu remained firmly in medal contention throughout the final before securing another podium finish for the host nation.Peru’s Nicolas Pacheco Espinosa narrowly missed out on the medals, finishing fourth with 25 hits. Japan’s Shotaro Toguchi placed fifth after prevailing in a tie-break against India’s Gurjoat Khangura, with both shooters ending on 19 hits.Italy’s Niccolo Sodi finished seventh, while France’s Nicolas Le Jeune placed eighth after both were eliminated with eight hits.The victory marks another major international success for al-Athba, whose composure and precision under pressure earned him the biggest prize in a final featuring athletes from seven nations and further underlined Qatar’s growing stature in world shooting.The World Cup continues on Friday with more rifle, pistol and shotgun medals to be decided as the competition enters its closing stages. 

The State of Qatar participated in the 22nd Arab Conference of Heads of Immigration and Passports, held at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the Council of Arab Interior Ministers in the Republic of Tunisia.The Ministry of Interior's delegation at the conference was headed by Director General of Passports Major General Mohammed Ahmed Al Ateeq Al Dosari.The conference discussed agenda items related to strengthening joint Arab cooperation in the fields of immigration and passports, developing joint security mechanisms, and addressing challenges related to the immigration and passport sector. Appropriate recommendations were adopted on these topics.  

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MOCI), in cooperation with the Communications Regulatory Authority (CRA), organized a specialized workshop aimed at sharing knowledge in the field of competition protection, with the participation of experts and stakeholders from both entities.According to a ministry statement issued today, the workshop aimed to enhance cooperation and facilitate the exchange of expertise among participants, thereby raising awareness of competition protection principles and supporting practices that drive market efficiency.The statement noted that the workshop covered several key areas, including an overview of the institutional framework for enforcing Qatar's competition protection law, highlighting the roles of the Competition Protection Committee and the departments within the Competition Protection Department along with their respective competencies.It also introduced the services provided by the department and their application procedures, addressed core concepts of competition and anti-competitive practices, and outlined major activities that could disrupt competition or hinder normal market operations. Additionally, the workshop presented key indicators for evaluating market competition and concentration levels, as well as methods for analyzing them.The workshop forms part of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry's ongoing efforts to strengthen collaboration with national entities and firmly establish principles of fair competition, contributing to the development of a competitive and sustainable business environment. 

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MOCI), in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Development and Family and Qatar Tourism (represented by its marketing arm, Visit Qatar), announced the launch of the second edition of the "Purple Saturday" initiative. The program is part of ongoing national efforts to foster the inclusion and empowerment of persons with disabilities while providing a more accessible and comprehensive shopping experience.Held annually on the last Saturday of July, the initiative aims to offer discounts, special promotions, and enhanced services tailored to individuals with disabilities. This year's campaign will run from July 25 through August 1.According to a ministry statement issued today, the initiative seeks to create a suitable shopping environment that allows persons with disabilities to access goods and services easily and independently. By fostering principles of inclusivity and corporate social responsibility, the program encourages commercial establishments to adopt best practices that serve all members of society.The statement added that the initiative includes providing physical accommodations and accessibility services within commercial centers and retail outlets, alongside exclusive offers and privileges designed to enrich the shopping experience and promote social participation.The organizing bodies called on all commercial businesses to participate in this second edition by registering through the ministry's digital platform and completing the online application process.This initiative highlights the unified efforts of government entities and the commercial sector to develop a more flexible service ecosystem responsive to diverse community needs, ultimately establishing accessible, inclusive shopping standards for everyone.  

His Excellency Minister of Justice and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs Ibrahim bin Ali bin Issa Al Hassan Al Mohannadi held Thursday bilateral meetings with the Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates to the State of Qatar Saeed Abdullah Al Qamzi and the Ambassador of the State of Kuwait to Qatar Ahmad Abdulrahman Al Shuraim.Discussions during the meetings focused on legal and judicial cooperation between the State of Qatar and both the United Arab Emirates and the State of Kuwait, and ways to strengthen and develop it.
