FIFA President Gianni Infantino reiterated that Iran will play their World Cup games in the United States as scheduled Thursday as he kicked off the global football body’s summit in Vancouver. Iran’s participation at this year’s tournament in Canada, Mexico and the United States has been shrouded in uncertainty since the eruption of war in the Middle East in February following strikes by the United States and Israel. Infantino, who has repeatedly stated that Iran will be at the World Cup, underscored that stance at the start of his address to delegates in Vancouver. “Let me start by the outset, confirming straightaway that of course Iran will be participating at the FIFA World Cup 2026,” Infantino said. “And of course, Iran will play (in) the United States of America.” Iranian officials had floated the idea of shifting their group games from the United States to Mexico, but that proposal had already been nixed by Infantino. In a further twist last week, Italy-born US special envoy Paolo Zampolli was reported to have floated the idea of Italy taking Iran’s World Cup place. The US government later distanced themselves from that proposal, with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio saying Iran’s footballers would be welcome. But the tension surrounding Iran’s World Cup participation rumbled into the build-up to Thursday’s FIFA Congress. Iran was the only absentee from the 211-member congress as Thursday’s meeting got under way after a clash with Canadian border officials earlier this week.

FIFA has announced the release of a new allocation of tickets for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, 50 days ahead of the tournament's kick off in North America.In a statement published on its official website, FIFA said fans will be able to purchase tickets for all 104 matches through FIFA's online platform from 13:00 GMT, with sales conducted on a first-come, first-served basis.The governing body added that more than five million tickets have already been sold. While this phase is described as the final stage of ticket sales, FIFA noted that additional tickets will continue to be made available periodically until the final match on July 19.The 2026 edition of the World Cup will be the largest in the competition's history, featuring 48 teams - an expansion from the previous format of 32 nations.The tournament, jointly hosted by three countries for the first time, is expected to draw unprecedented global attendance and viewership.

Al Rayyan and Al Arabi booked their places in the Amir Cup Basketball semi-finals with convincing wins Sunday at Al Gharafa Arena. Al Rayyan produced an impressive offensive performance to defeat Al Gharafa 104-82 in a high-tempo clash that saw momentum shift across all four quarters. Malik Carey led the charge with a remarkable 44 points, while Devin Morris Ebanks responded with 41 for Al Gharafa in a game defined by standout individual efforts. Al Arabi maintained their strong form with a commanding 104-73 victory over Qatar SC to complete the semi-final lineup. Despite Joshua Nicholas leading all scorers with 31 points for Qatar SC, Abdulrahman Yahya paced Al Arabi with 20 points in a balanced team display. Al Ahli will meet Al Arabi and Al Sadd will face Al Rayyan. Both games are scheduled for May 4.
