Qatar’s Nasser Saleh al-Attiyah and his Spanish co-driver Candido Carrera won all six demanding special stages to move into a commanding lead after the first leg of the Jordan Rally.The Autotek Motorsport Skoda Fabia RS driver was in a class of his own on the third round of the FIA Middle East Rally Championship (MERC) and had built up an advantage of 1min 12.8sec at the night halt.Al-Attiyah said: “It was a good feeling all day and we won every stage. We have a good gap now, a good lead. Now we try to keep going like this. We pushed from the morning and we took a good time. We managed the times this afternoon and will try and do the same tomorrow. We sent the data to the engineer just to check everything is okay.”Stages were held in the Jordan Valley and Dead Sea areas, but Oman’s Abdullah al-Rawahi and Ata al-Hmoud admitted that their choice of medium tyres was a mistake for the opening loop of three stages in their Oman Rally Team Skoda Fabia RS. The Omani trailed al-Attiyah by 51.4 seconds at the midday regroup and was unable to grab any time back in the afternoon.Saudi Arabia’s Hamza Bakhashab is tackling a first full programme of MERC rallies in a Toyota GR Yaris Rally2 supported by Jameel Motorsport. He and Irish co-driver Lorcan Moore settled into a comfortable third position.Jordan’s Shaker Jweihan was the dominant force in MERC2 at the first two rounds in the winter and opened his account on home gravel in similar fashion with Mustafa Juma in a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X. He managed his pace perfectly to conserve the car, avoided rocks thrown on to the racing line by the Rally2 cars running ahead and held fifth place.One of the drives of the day came from Palestine’s Hamadeh Uda. He teamed up with Zeid Abu Zeid in a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X and climbed to seventh place.Mohammed al-Marri had the bragging rights over Qatari team-mate Rashid al-Muhannadi in the battle between the two Peugeot 208 Rally 4s entered by the QMMF. Al-Marri finished the day eighth ahead of the Jordanian duo of Shadi Shaban and Samer Issa. Al-Muhannadi was 11th.Saturday’s schedule consists of two runs through the Panorama (16.95km), Suwayma (11.12km) and Rawda (26.97km) specials before the ceremonial finish takes place in the HoverUp Park to the north of the Dead Sea. The second pass through Rawda will also act as the Power Stage with additional points available for the fastest crews. 

MoFA describes incident as blatant violation of international lawOIC calls the move a deliberate provocation to Muslims worldwide Qatar condemned the storming of Al-Aqsa Mosque compound by Israel's extremist National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir , as well as the provocative actions and violations committed by settlers under the protection of Israeli occupation forces, including restrictions on worshipers' access to the mosque.In a statement issued yesterday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the incident as a blatant violation of international law and international humanitarian law, and an unacceptable provocation to the sentiments of millions of Muslims around the world.The ministry also warned that such actions represent a dangerous attempt to alter the historical and legal status quo in occupied Jerusalem and its Islamic and Christian holy sites. The ministry stressed that Al-Aqsa Mosque is a place of worship exclusively for Muslims, affirming that all unilateral measures aimed at changing the historical and legal status of Jerusalem and its holy sites are null and void under international law.It warned that continued violations and provocations would further fuel violence and instability in the region and undermine efforts to restore calm and stability. The ministry renewed Qatar's call on the international community to take urgent action to compel Israel, as the occupying power, to halt its ongoing violations against the Palestinian people and their holy sites, and to comply with relevant international resolutions.The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also reiterated Qatar's firm support for the Palestinian cause and the steadfastness of the Palestinian people, based on ending the occupation and enabling the Palestinian people to exercise their legitimate rights, foremost among them the establishment of an independent state on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.Meanwhile, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has strongly condemned a visit by Israel's far-right National Security Minister to the Al Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem.In a statement issued from its headquarters in Makkah, the OIC described the visit, which took place under Israeli police protection, as a "blatant assault" and a deliberate provocation to Muslims worldwide.The organization also criticised the raising of the Israeli flag and what it described as provocative religious practices carried out within the compound's courtyards. The OIC reiterated its long-standing position that Israel, as an occupying power, holds no sovereignty over the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967, including East Jerusalem and its Islamic and Christian holy sites. 

KTM's Pedro Acosta set the fastest time in Friday's practice for the Catalan Grand Prix, the sixth of 22 rounds in the MotoGP world championship.Under threatening skies, Acosta finished 0.018sec ahead of fellow Spaniard Alex Marquez of Ducati-Gresini and 0.070sec in front of his South African teammate Brad Binder.Raul Fernandez posted the fourth-fastest time at the very end of the session, just ahead of Johann Zarco and Italian Fabio Di Giannantonio.Championship leader Marco Bezzecchi took seventh place for Aprilia, ahead of Honda's Joan Mir and Australian Jack Miller.In the absence of reigning world champion Marc Marquez, who underwent surgery on his right foot and shoulder on Sunday, Jorge Martin, winner of both the sprint and the Grand Prix at Le Mans last weekend, failed to seize his chance.The 2024 world champion, who had fallen in the morning during free practice, went down again in the afternoon and could do no better than 17th fastest.With only the top 10 going directly into Q2, Martin will need to finish in the top two of Q1 to have a chance of a decent starting place on the grid.Two-time champion Francesco Bagnaia, Marquez's teammate at Ducati, also missed out on direct qualification as he could only manage the 13th quickest time. 

Pre-race favourite Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) proved his Giro d'Italia credentials by going alone to conquer the Blockhaus summit finish and win stage seven on Friday in his ‌first telling move of the race to move second overall.Dane ​Vingegaard, making his Giro ‌debut, went for broke with just over 5 km ‌to the ⁠top, with Austrian ‌Felix Gall (Decathlon CMA CGM) looking ‌impressive as the only rider to get close, coming in 13 seconds ⁠behind the winner and now third in the GC."Today is a big day for me, it's my first Giro stage win, so it's a nice day," Vingegaard said. "Felix is a very strong rider, so we knew he'd be up there close. He's a big rival and so he is a guy we have to ​worry about."Australian Jai Hindley, who triumphed at Blockhaus in 2022 before going on to win that year's Giro, finished third on the longest stage of this ‌year's race, 244 km from ⁠Formia ending with ​the 13.6 km steep climb to the line.Overall leader, ​Portugal's Afonso Eulalio (Bahrain Victorious), put in a brave ride, coming home less than three minutes after Vingegaard to hold onto the pink jersey, with the Dane three minutes and 17 seconds behind.Vingegaard, aiming to become the eighth rider to win all three Grand Tours, began the day 15th in the general classification, over six minutes down on Eulalio, and the first summit finish was always going to be a target for the Dane.An early five-man ‌breakaway, including sprint specialist ‌Jonathan Milan, was allowed to ⁠build a significant gap over the peloton, and the Italian was ⁠caught with 80 km left, ⁠his job done having taken maximum points at the intermediate sprint.With 60 km to go, the gap to the front was six minutes but the reduced bunch upped the pace and were less than three minutes behind when the leaders hit the start of the final climb.Two ​riders, Nickolas Zukowsky and Jardi Christiaan van der Lee, tried to stay away but resistance was futile as Visma-Lease a Bike pushed their way up in support of Vingegaard.Giulio Pellizzari was the only one to keep pace when Vingegaard went in front but the Italian was soon dropped and it was Gall who powered to the finish.Gall is 17 seconds behind Vingegaard overall and could prove to be the ‌Dane's biggest danger.Saturday's ​stage eight is a 156-km ride from Chieti to Fermo. 

US President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping held a "good" meeting on Thursday in which they agreed that the Strait of Hormuz "must remain open", the White House said.Iran has largely blocked shipping through the vital waterway, through which a fifth of the world's oil and natural gas normally passes, since the outbreak of war with the United States and Israel on February 28. "The two sides agreed that the Strait of Hormuz must remain open to support the free flow of energy," the White House said.China is directly affected by the lack of petroleum crossing the Strait of Hormuz. More than half of the crude imported by sea to China comes from the Middle East and mainly transits through the strait, according to maritime analytics firm Kpler.According to the White House, Xi expressed an interest in purchasing more American oil to reduce China's dependence on the strait in the future. Beijing's own readout of the meeting did not mention any such interest. For its part, the White House statement did not mention any discussions between the two leaders on Taiwan, the self-ruled island claimed by Beijing and a sensitive subject in US-China diplomacy.Xi earlier warned that "conflict" between China and the United States could break out, should the issue be mishandled, Chinese state media had reported.

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has introduced a fresh batch of electronic services in the first quarter of this year, comprising 29 services on its website and 57 on its mobile application Bee’ah. The move is designed to streamline procedures, lift the quality of services offered to individuals, companies and beneficiaries, and speed up transactions through digital channels. The rollout forms part of the ministry’s broader push to deepen digital transformation across its operations, in keeping with a strategy built around government service excellence, innovation, a better user experience and the development of digital systems that deliver efficient and flexible service.In a statement issued yesterday, the ministry said the new offering covers 40 electronic services in radiation protection. These handle the issuance, renewal, amendment and cancellation of personal licences for work in radiation-related fields, licences for possessing radioactive materials and radiation devices, licences for importing and exporting radioactive materials, and licences for vehicles transporting such materials. A further 12 services relate to hazardous waste, among them the renewal of permits for disposing of hazardous healthcare waste, the issuance of maritime transit permits for hazardous waste shipments, and extensions of those transit permits.  The package also features 16 electronic services tied to the Wildlife Development Department, including permits for quarry operations, the issuance and renewal of permits for installing mobile crushers, permits to visit Fuwairit Beach, and permits to begin project work in areas of wild vegetation, alongside other services. Eighteen additional services cover the Natural Reserves Sector and are available on both the ministry’s website and the app. They include environmental permits for temporary activities, land lease contracts for service activities, land lease contracts for motorcycle rental activities, permits to visit natural reserves, filming permits within reserves, and permits to visit whale shark and dugong aggregations. Speaking on the launch, Yousef Ibrahim al-Hamar, Assistant Undersecretary for Environmental Affairs at the ministry, said the new package is part of efforts to develop the environmental services system and ease procedures for individuals, companies and beneficiaries, consistent with the country’s drive towards digital transformation and more efficient government services. He said the services help structure how applications are submitted and tracked electronically and make it easier to complete transactions, particularly those involving technical and environmental licences and permits. The ministry, he added, is working to convert services of a technical and regulatory nature into clear, user-friendly digital offerings that save beneficiaries time and effort and cut down on in-person visits, without diluting the accuracy of procedures or the requirements approved for each service. Al-Hamar also noted that the expansion of electronic services reflects the ministry’s commitment to sharpening its digital tools and providing easier and more effective services, reinforcing its work to protect the environment and uphold the highest levels of compliance with approved standards. 

Jim Furyk said Wednesday he wants a long-term blueprint for United States success in the Ryder Cup, with the 2027 American captain also seeing a possible role next year for Tiger Woods.Furyk, the 2018 US captain in a Ryder Cup loss in France, was handed the captain's role by the PGA of America last month.Woods had been considered for the job but the 15-time major winner has taken a break from golf while undergoing treatment after facing DUI charges from a March car crash."We haven't spoken yet," Furyk said of Woods. "Out of courtesy and for him, his family, and I know maybe a road to health, I haven't reached out, but I will. Definitely."Woods could have a role with the 2027 team, Furyk said."We'll see where that role may fall," Furyk said. "In the past, he has kind of taken a backseat and maybe served as an advisor."I enjoyed serving as a vice captain with him a number of times. He brought a lot to the team room, a lot of knowledge and a lot of experience."Furyk, who turned 56 Tuesday, spoke at Aronimink on the eve of the PGA Championship and only miles from where he grew up.The Americans, who have lost 11 of the past 15 Cups, will try to win in Europe for the first time since 1993 when they face Luke Donald's trophy holders next year at Adare Manor in Ireland."When I look at my job, it's really to create a culture, a chemistry amongst them, and put them in positions where they can be really successful," Furyk said."We want to go over there and win on foreign soil, something we haven't done in a long time. It's not going to be easy. We have to scratch and claw, but I think we have the talent to be able to do that."Then I really look at it from a long-term perspective. We need to create a blueprint. We need to create more continuity for our players and our future captains."Since making his debut as a player in 1997, Furyk has been in 14 consecutive Cups as US player, assistant captain and captain.Furyk said some captains had not been put in a strong place to succeed, noting Tom Watson in a 2014 loss at Gleneagles that led to the creation of a Ryder Cup board to better prepare American teams."I'm not going to point a finger at anyone. We're all in this together, from the PGA of America to Team USA to our captains to our players," Furyk said."But I believe we had a vision in '14 that got us to a certain point. I just don't think we evolved along the way. Whether it's PGA of America, and its captains, probably could have done a better job together creating a better team atmosphere."Grow and evolveFuryk also sees his role as setting up a roadmap to success at Adare Manor and beyond."I don't think the idea is much different than 2014, but I think we could grow, we could evolve, at a much better rate," Furyk said. "There's a lot of stones to be unturned."Furyk noted Europe's foursomes domination, a combined 13-3 edge in the past two events."It's pretty glaring we're not prepared for that format," Furyk said.He said US players were not put in the best position to win last year in a loss at Bethpage."They gave us 110 per cent. Did we get the result we wanted? No. Did we play our best? No," Furyk said. "Our captains, did we put them in the best position to be successful? Probably not." 

Jordan's Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio discussed the latest regional developments during a phone call on Friday evening.The two sides reviewed efforts aimed at de-escalation and addressing the regional and international repercussions of current tensions, in a manner that supports lasting security and stability. 

The member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) called for a final agreement between the US and Iran, welcoming the two-week ceasefire announced on April 8, 2026, affirming the need to build on it to reduce escalation in the region.ASEAN stressed in a statement the importance of maintaining maritime safety and security and preserving freedom of navigation and overflight over international straits, in accordance with international law, particularly the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, and the standards adopted by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO), calling for the restoration of safe and unimpeded passage for ships and aircraft in the Strait of Hormuz, and ensuring the safety of seafarers and ships in accordance with relevant international agreements.The member states also urged Washington and Tehran to continue negotiations leading to a permanent end to the conflict and stability in the region, praising the efforts of Pakistan and the parties concerned in facilitating dialogue between the two sides.ASEAN affirmed the need for the full and effective implementation of the ceasefire, which would contribute to reducing human losses, ensure the safety of navigation and freedom of passage for civilian ships and aircraft, reduce disruptions in energy and commodity supplies, and mitigate their impact on the global economy.It also called on all parties to strictly adhere to the terms of the ceasefire, exercise maximum restraint, cease hostilities, avoid any steps that would escalate tensions, and work collectively to reach a comprehensive and sustainable solution in accordance with international law, the UN Charter and UN Security Council resolutions.ASEAN reaffirmed the importance of maintaining regional peace, stability and prosperity, and promoting dialogue and diplomacy as a key means of addressing conflicts.It also reaffirmed the commitment of states to resolve their disputes by peaceful means, respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states, protect civilians and civilian infrastructure, and ensure the safety of peacekeeping forces and humanitarian workers, in accordance with international law and the UN Charter. 

Pakistan on Saturday expressed hope that the United States and Iran would engage constructively in talks hosted in Islamabad, aimed at easing regional tensions.Pakistan's Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said in a statement that Pakistan remains committed to facilitating dialogue between the parties to help achieve a lasting and sustainable resolution.A high-level US delegation, led by Vice President JD Vance and including Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, arrived in Islamabad to take part in talks scheduled for later on Saturday.On the Iranian side, the delegation is headed by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.The talks follow a recently announced ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran after weeks of heightened tensions since late February, in a move aimed at de-escalating the situation and safeguarding energy flows through the Strait of Hormuz. 

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed on Wednesday that safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz will be possible for two weeks, taking technical limitations into account.Araghchi made the remarks in a post on the social media platform X, following the announcement of a temporary ceasefire earlier in the day between Iran, the United States and Israel. He noted that if attacks against Iran cease, Iran will halt its operations in the Strait of Hormuz.The announcement came after US President Donald Trump said he had agreed to "suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks." 

The South Korean military announced that North Korea fired several short-range ballistic missiles toward the East Sea Wednesday, one day after another launch yesterday.Yonhap News Agency quoted the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) as saying that the missiles were launched from the Wonsan area of ​​North Korea and flew some 240 kilometers.This marks North Korea's fourth confirmed ballistic missile launch this year."Our military is closely monitoring North Korea's various movements under a robust South Korea-US combined defence posture and maintains the capabilities and posture to respond to any provocation in an overwhelming manner," the JCS said.South Korean and US intelligence authorities have tracked the launch movement and closely shared relevant information, sources added.North Korea's last multiple ballistic missile launch toward the East Sea occurred on March 14, coinciding with the annual spring joint military exercises between South Korea and the United States.
