Barcelona have carried their fury beyond the dugout and into UEFA’s inbox, lodging a formal complaint over ‌the officiating in their 2-0 home ​defeat by Atletico Madrid ‌in the Champions League quarter-final first leg. The ‌row centres on ‌an incident early in ‌the second half when Barca appealed for a penalty after Atletico goalkeeper Juan Musso appeared to have put the ball back into play from a goal kick before defender Marc Pubill handled it inside the six-yard box to retake it. Referee Istvan Kovacs waved play on and the VAR ​team did not summon him to the monitor, drawing furious reactions from the Barcelona bench. “Barcelona inform that the club ‌legal services have submitted a complaint ​to UEFA today regarding the events in ​the Champions League quarter-final first leg against Atletico Madrid,” the club said in an official statement. “The complaint centres around a specific action. In the 54th minute of the match, after play had been restarted correctly, an opponent player picked up the ball in their area without being shown the corresponding penalty,” ‌it added. “Barcelona understand that ‌this decision, along with a grave lack of intervention by VAR, represents a major error. Accordingly, the club has requested an investigation be opened, access to refereeing communications, and where applicable, official acknowledgment of the errors and the adoption of the relevant measures.” Interpretations of similar incidents have varied. In ​the Champions League quarter-finals in April 2024, the referee did not award a penalty to Bayern Munich after Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes touched the ball following what appeared to be a restart from goalkeeper David Raya. Later in 2024, VAR intervened to award Club Brugge a penalty in a comparable exchange ‌involving Aston Villa ​goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez and defender Tyrone Mings. After the game, Barcelona manager Hansi Flick tore into the officiating, raging over ‌a second-half penalty call and Pau Cubarsi’s ​red card that left ‌his team a man down before halftime. “I don’t know why VAR hasn’t been used. The referee ... I think he’s brilliant. We all make mistakes, ‌but what’s the point of VAR? I ​just can’t understand it. It should have been ​a penalty, a second yellow and a red card as he already had a booking. This is exactly what shouldn’t happen,” Flick said. Atletico manager Diego Simeone saw it differently. “It’s a matter of common sense,” Simeone told reporters. “The referee saw it as it was. That Marc (Pubill) received what appeared to be a pass from his teammate to ‌start the move, the ‌referee saw it the same way as Marc saw it. Then we can look at as many situations as we like.” Barcelona had already been reduced to 10 men in the 44th minute when Cubarsi was sent off for hauling down Giuliano Simeone as the last man. Julian Alvarez brilliantly curled in the resulting free kick before ​the interval and Alexander Sorloth sealed the win after the break. Flick also questioned the dismissal. “I’m not sure if he made enough contact because the ball was behind him; I’m not entirely sure,” he said. “I don’t know. It might be, or it might not be. I don’t know if he touched him enough. But in other situations, when ‌the ball is ​touched by the hand, it’s very clear to me.”

The Diamond League athletics meeting in Doha has been postponed for six weeks and will now take place on June 19 due to the war in the Middle East, organisers announced.The United States and Iran agreed on Tuesday a two-week ceasefire to the war that has killed thousands and hammered the global economy. The Diamond League organisers had previously said the opening leg of this year's series would go ahead as planned on May 8, but have now decided to delay the event."In recent weeks, the Diamond League has been monitoring the situation in Doha, working in close coordination with meeting organisers, Qatari authorities and other stakeholders. In the interests of athlete and spectator safety, a decision has now been taken to postpone the meeting. Should conditions allow, it will now be held on June 19," they said in a statement.The competition will also be moved from the Qatar Sports Club to the Khalifa International Stadium in case of higher temperatures. The Khalifa stadium, which is temperature controlled, hosted the world athletics championships in 2019 and matches of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.The Diamond League is the elite one-day meeting series in track and field, a season that features 15 meets in 13 different countries across four different continents. The first Diamond League meeting will instead be in Shanghai on May 16.Several major sporting events in the Middle East have been postponed or cancelled because of the war the United States and Israel launched on Iran, including the Formula One grands prix in Bahrain and Jeddah, in Saudi Arabia.Both were scheduled for mid-April and have been cancelled. In football, the Finalissima, which was to pit European champions Spain against Copa America winners Argentina on March 27 in Qatar, was called off.The Qatar motorcycling Grand Prix, initially scheduled for the weekend of April 12, has been postponed to November 8, while a gymnastics World Cup event scheduled to take place in Doha in April was also cancelled. However, a horse racing meeting in Dubai, carrying prize money of $30.5mn and featuring the Dubai World Cup, did go ahead on March 28.

Pakistan international Fakhar Zaman has been banned for two matches after being found guilty of ball tampering during the country’s showpiece T20 league, cricket bosses said Tuesday.The 35-year-old opener was seen on video footage altering the condition of the ball during his team Lahore Qalandars’ match against Karachi Kings in Lahore on Sunday night.“Zaman has been suspended for two Pakistan Super League (PSL) matches after he was found guilty of a Level 3 offence for tampering the ball,” the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said in a statement.The PCB charged Zaman, who denied ball tampering, at a disciplinary hearing with match referee Roshan Mahanama of Sri Lanka.Mahanama viewed television footage which showed Qalandars’ players Zaman, skipper Shaheen Shah Afridi and Haris Rauf, and umpire Faisal Afridi inspecting the condition of the ball.The umpire awarded five penalty runs against Qalandars, who lost the match by four wickets.Earlier, fast bowler Naseem Shah was slapped with the biggest fine in Pakistan cricket history after criticising a politician on social media.Shah’s whopping $71,500 punishment is the latest incident to rock the PSL during a turbulent opening week.Fellow fast bowler Shaheen was also fined $3,500 for breaking the tournament’s tight security protocols.The PSL is taking place behind closed doors without fans - and only at two venues instead of six - because of fuel supply concerns caused by the Iran war.Naseem, who plays for Rawalpindiz, aimed a barb at Punjab chief minister Maryam Nawaz, who was the guest of honour at a slimmed-down PSL opening ceremony before last Thursday’s match between Qalandars and Hyderabad Kingsmen.In a post on X, swiftly deleted after being widely shared, Naseem mocked Nawaz’s arrival, saying: “Why is she treated like the Queen at Lord’s?”He later claimed his account had been hacked, but the PCB did not agree and ordered him to appear before a three-man disciplinary committee.Naseem apologised before the committee imposed the record fine.Afridi was fined by the Qalandars for breaching security protocols at his team hotel in Lahore, one of two host cities along with Karachi for this year’s tournament.Punjab Police said Afridi was refused permission to take visitors to teammate Sikander Raza’s room but did so anyway. 

The Arab League has strongly condemned the Iranian attacks on power and water desalination plants in the State of Kuwait.In a statement Monday, the organization slammed the attack as "malignant" and reiterated that any Iranian military assault on any Arab nation, whatever its kind or size, is "utterly rejected and deplored".It accused Iran of targeting civilian facilities, including water networks, energy and electrical facilities, transport centers, residential areas, and of "terrorizing" civilians.The league said such actions amount to a "flagrant breach" of law and its enduring precepts. It stressed that this act is tantamount to a full-fledged war crime under international humanitarian law, the consequences of which would be fully shouldered by the Iranian regime, including reparations for damages.As such, the Arab League reaffirmed that Iran should immediately live up to its obligation to implement the entirety of the content of Security Council Resolution 2817 and cease its attacks on Arab nations.

Al Rayyan and Al Arabi booked their places in the Qatar Basketball League final after hard-fought semi-final play-off victories Saturday at Al Gharafa Indoor Hall. Powered by a sensational 41-point performance from Rolands Freimanis, Al Rayyan edged past Al Ahli 93–88 in a high-scoring encounter. In the other semi-final, Al Arabi secured a dramatic 76–74 win over Al Sadd, holding their nerve in a tightly contested clash to seal their spot in the final.

England opener Ben Duckett has withdrawn from the Indian Premier League (IPL) four days before the start of the ‌tournament to focus on his international ​career, a decision ‌that could leave him facing a ‌two-season ban from ‌the league. The 31-year-old, who ‌scored 202 runs at an average of 20.20 during the Ashes, was bought by Delhi Capitals for Rs20mn ($213,167) at the auction. Under IPL rules, any player who registers for the auction, is picked by a franchise and makes himself unavailable before the ​start of the season can be barred from participating in the tournament and the player auction ‌for two seasons. “I have made the ​extremely difficult decision to withdraw from ​the IPL. I have given this a lot of thought and it has not been an easy choice,” Duckett wrote on Instagram. “Representing England is something I have dreamed of since I was a child, and I want to give everything I can to English cricket. To do ‌that, I need ‌to ensure I am in the best possible place physically and mentally ahead of the summer. “I would like to sincerely apologise to everyone at Delhi. I was genuinely very excited about the opportunity to represent the franchise, and I fully appreciate the time and ​planning that goes into building a squad. “I am sorry for any disruption my decision may cause. I would also like to apologise to all the fans, as I know how much the team means to everyone in Delhi.” The IPL runs from March 28 to ‌May 31. 

A consortium of investors, including US asset management giant Blackstone, Tuesday announced the takeover of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), one of the founding clubs of Indian Premier League, for nearly $1.8bn. The announcement comes just days before the start of the lucrative T20 tournament on Saturday. The franchise, which won the IPL for the first time last year, was sold by United Spirits Limited, the Indian unit of British beverage giant Diageo, for Rs166.6bn ($1.77bn). In a statement, the acquiring consortium said it was “proud to become custodians of RCB.” The group includes Bolt Ventures, run by leading sports investor David Blitzer, Indian media conglomerate The Times of India Group, along with Blackstone and Indian corporate giant Aditya Birla Group. RCB’s “championship-winning culture” and its connection to the southern city of Bengaluru and “one of the most passionate fanbases in world sport make this an extraordinary opportunity.” “We are committed to taking RCB to new heights, on the pitch and beyond.” Praveen Someshwar, chief executive at United Spirits Limited, said the deal was a milestone “as we sharpen focus on our core beverage business to unlock its true potential with sustained growth.” Earlier this year, RCB’s women’s team won their second Women’s Premier League title. IPL’s RCB to keep 11 seats empty in honour of stampede dead Indian Premier League champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru will keep 11 seats at their M Chinnaswamy Stadium empty in memory of the fans crushed to death in title celebrations last year, the team said Tuesday. Eleven supporters aged between 14 and 29 died in a stampede outside the stadium in June after RCB won the IPL for the first time. The lucrative T20 tournament begins its 2026 season on Saturday when RCB host Sunrisers Hyderabad. The Bengaluru team, including star batsman Virat Kohli, will warm up for the game in tops sporting the number 11 and wear black arm bands for the match. Along with the permanently empty seats, CEO Rajesh Menon said: “This is a tribute to our fans, who will always remain a part of our journey.” After the tragedy, authorities deemed the venue unsafe due to structural and crowd management deficiencies, and moved important fixtures elsewhere. But earlier this month the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said that the stadium would host games, including RCB home fixtures. Menon said crowd management measures have been “significantly strengthened”, including setting up AI-led cameras. “This system provides real-time alerts, including stand-specific crowd counts, to ensure better monitoring and control,” he said. The stampede took place a day after RCB won the final against Punjab Kings and returned to a homecoming trophy parade. Hundreds of thousands gathered on the streets to welcome their hero Kohli and his victorious teammates. More than 50 people were injured. Several officials, including a senior RCB executive, and representatives of event organisers DNA and Karnataka State Cricket Association, were questioned by police.No one has been convicted.
