Serena's Wimbledon comeback fizzles out in first round

* Serena fever gripped Wimbledon as she made comeback aged 44 * American last played at Wimbledon in 2022  Serena Williams' highly anticipated ‌return to competitive action after a ‌four-year absence fizzled ‌out on Tuesday as ‌the American perished in the Wimbledon first round following a 6-3 6-7(6) 6-3 defeat by little-known Australian Maya Joint.There were high hopes that the 44-year-old wildcard would become the oldest woman to win a singles match at the All England Club since Martina Navratilova achieved the feat aged 47 in 2004, but Joint had other ideas.The 20-year-old Joint, who was ‌not even born when Williams won the first seven of her 23 Grand Slam singles titles, blocked out all the hullabaloo surrounding her opponent's comeback to produce the most notable victory of her fledgling career.Joint walked on to Centre Court on the back of winning just one match in her last 12 tournaments but by the time she walked ‌off, she was ‌basking in the glory of delivering a brutal knockout blow to one of the greats of the sport.Even when Joint was denied a chance to close out the contest after earning a match point in the second set tiebreak, she did not let that setback rattle her confidence or throw her off stride.Around 45 minutes later she was holding aloft her arms in victory after Williams ended one of the most talked about comebacks in sporting history by swiping a service return long.She will next play Filipino 29th ‌seed Alexandra Eala.

Brook ready for "great honour" of succeeding Stokes as Test skipper

Harry Brook said Tuesday it would be a "great honour" to succeed Ben Stokes as England's Test captain even if that meant he was responsible for leading the side in all three international formats.Brook is set to skipper England in Wednesday's first T20 against India at Chester-le-Street and found himself talking to reporters just a day after Stokes bowed out of international cricket with a thumping 160-run loss to New Zealand in the third Test at Trent Bridge.Brook, also involved in a defeat that condemned England to a 2-1 series loss to the Black Caps, is now set to be at the helm for eight white-ball matches in just 18 days against India.But Brook said he would have no qualms about succeeding Stokes, who gave him his "100 percent support" for the role of Test skipper during his final press conference as captain."It's not up to me but if I got offered it then I'd be happy to take it," the talented 27-year-old batsman told reporters."I don't know yet (if it will happen) but it would be a great honour to do it. It'd be a privilege to captain England in the highest format of our game and the pinnacle."Playing Test cricket is the greatest thing I've ever done in my life, and it's a dream, something I've always wanted to do since I could speak," added Brook, who averages an impressive 53 in the format, with 10 hundreds in 38 matches.Head coach Brendon McCullum, in charge of both red and white-ball teams, indicated Monday that England would take their time over appointing Stokes's successor given it is over a month before their next Test -- against Pakistan at Brook's Headingley home ground. CONGESTED FIXTURE SCHEDULEEngland's congested fixture schedule, allied to concerns about the detrimental impact on a player's form were he to lead the side in all three formats, has led officials to shy away from making one man the captain in Test, 50-over and T20 cricket"I think it would be a tough job, but everything's tough in cricket," said Brook. "It's a hard sport."The other leading candidate to succeed Stokes is Joe Root, who as England's Test captain from 2017 to 2022 and stepped in when Stokes was deemed unavailable for the second match of the New Zealand series following a nightclub incident subject to a disciplinary investigation.Brook is the official Test vice-captain but his altercation with a bouncer in Wellington last November -- an incident that led to the imposition of a curfew that Stokes broke -- made England wary of leaving him in charge at the Oval."Making Rooty captain that week was definitely the right decision," said Brook."He's been a stalwart for English cricket," he added of his Yorkshire team-mate. "The ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board) needed him that week and he stepped up. My job was to help him as much as possible."

New Zealand thrash England for series win as Stokes bows out

New Zealand overwhelmed England by 160 runs in the third Test at Trent Bridge on Monday as Ben Stokes’s last match in international cricket ended with a thumping defeat.Victory meant New Zealand won a three-match campaign 2-1 - just their fourth series success in England in 20 attempts and only the second time they had triumphed after being 1-0 down after their 1999 success in England.This was also England's first series defeat at home in three or more Tests since 2012.The Test was upstaged by England captain Stokes dramatically announcing his retirement from international duty on Sunday.The 35-year-old all-rounder said he felt "burnt out" after four years as England skipper, although Stokes added he would continue to play for county side Durham.His decision came after he had returned to England duty after being omitted from a crushing 253-run defeat in the second Test, having broken a midnight curfew following the hosts' win in the series opener.Spectators in Nottingham gave Stokes a standing ovation when the news was made public on Sunday afternoon and the talismanic skipper promptly took a wicket with his next delivery.Stokes later promoted himself to open England's innings even though he is normally a middle-order batsman, with the hosts set a stiff target of 373 to win following Daryl Mitchell's courageous unbeaten century, which secured the player-of-the-match award.Stokes blazed his way to 30 off 20 balls, including two sixes, before he holed out, with his exit meaning he would have no on-field role on Monday, his last day in international cricket. No 'Bazball' repeat England had dramatically chased down a target of 299 to beat New Zealand at Trent Bridge four years ago, right at the start of the team's aggressive 'Bazball' era under Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum with Jonny Bairstow scoring a blistering century.Bairstow, however, was helped on his way by Tim Southee - now England's fast-bowling coach in a backroom set-up led by former New Zealand captain McCullum - with the seamer repeatedly bowling short as Bairstow hooked several sixes high over a short boundary.But the current New Zealand attack held their nerve, with England losing three more wickets before Sunday's close to be in dire straits at 103-4.And they were in even worse trouble at 116-6 after losing two wickets in five balls early in Monday’s play.Nathan Smith had Emilio Gay caught behind for 10 and then Joe Root, one of England's greatest batsmen, was superbly run out for 18 by Henry Nicholls's brilliant direct hit from backward point.Gus Atkinson, also back after breaking curfew alongside Stokes, and Jamie Smith kept New Zealand at bay with a stand of 75 before Atkinson was lbw for 19 to left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner.Jofra Archer, in a dismissal that summed up much of England's performance, was then caught behind off Nathan Smith trying to leave the ball as the hosts slumped to 198-8 shortly after lunch.Jamie Smith went to a fifty when he punched Santner for four.But another excellent direct hit run-out did for tailender Josh Tongue, with Santner on target this time, before Jamie Smith (60) was caught in the deep by Nathan Smith to seal a well-deserved success for the Black Caps.This match was a personal triumph for several New Zealand players, with captain Tom Latham (151) and Devon Conway (157) sharing an opening stand of 317 in the Black Caps' first-innings 438.New Zealand came into this match without injured paceman Matt Henry, their 11-wicket hero at the Oval, and in-form towering quick Kyle Jamieson, rested as a fitness precaution.And in Nottingham, Blair Tickner could only manage three overs before pulling out with concussion suffered when the tailender was hit flush on the helmet by an Archer bouncer.But fellow paceman Zak Foulkes, New Zealand's first concussion substitute, performed superbly to take six wickets in the match. BRIEF SCORES: New Zealand 438 and 288 for 9 dec (Mitchell 100*, Ravindra 94) beat England 354 and 212 (Smith 60, Foulkes 3-52) by 160 runs.

Stokes out for 30 in final Test innings after shock England retirement

England captain Ben Stokes fell for 30 in his last international innings after announcing his shock retirement from international cricket on Sunday in the middle of a Test match.The 35-year-old all-rounder confirmed his impending exit shortly before tea on the fourth day of the ongoing third Test against New Zealand in Nottingham, having informed his teammates in the dressing room at Trent Bridge before the start of Sunday's play, with the three-match series locked at 1-1.Stokes was in the middle of a lengthy bowling spell when news filtered into a stunned crowd as he was about to start his 11th over.He then received a standing ovation from spectators at Trent Bridge.And in a moment of pure sporting theatre, Stokes had Zak Foulkes caught at slip with his next ball to spark yet more raucous cheers.As if that were not enough drama, Stokes -- normally a middle-order batsman -- came out to open the innings for just the third time in his 122-Test career after New Zealand set England set a stiff victory target of 373 following an unbeaten century from Daryl Mitchell. SIGNALLED HIS INTENTIONSStokes signalled his intentions with a fierce drive off his first balls faced before he was dropped soon afterwards.He later lofted New Zealand's Zak Foulkes, a concussion substitute, for a legside six and the left-handed batsman cleared the ropes again when he slog-swept seamer Nathan Smith.But a 20-ball innings, also featuring two fours, ended when Stokes slogged Foulkes to wide mid-on, with England 50-1 in the eighth over of their chase.Sunday's bombshell announcement came after Stokes returned to England duty at Trent Bridge following the fall-out from a London nightclub incident also involving teammate Gus Atkinson earlier this month.The pair were omitted from a 253-run defeat in the second Test at the Oval -- which levelled this three-match series at 1-1 -- for breaking a midnight curfew while celebrating England's win in the first Test.Stokes was later handed a written conduct warning but escaped any further disciplinary action and returned to lead the side at Trent Bridge.'DEFINING FIGURE'Telling his teammates his celebrated England career would end after the finish of the New Zealand series, Stokes said in a clip shared by the ECB: "There's something that I know is going to happen over the next two days, which is my last two days as your captain and my last two days representing England."Reasons can wait but I've had many trips to the well before for this team, for you blokes, for people beforehand and I've got one more trip to do."And the only thing that I ask, please, is can everyone please just do the same? We've got a lot of hard work still to do."Stokes, captain of the Test side since 2022, has been responsible for some of England's most remarkable performances in Test and limited overs cricket since making his white-ball debut 15 years ago.His unbeaten 84 against New Zealand in the 2019 I50-over World Cup final at Lord's helped take the match into a Super Over in which England sealed a thrilling win. EXTRAORDINARY 135 NOT OUTAnd weeks later his extraordinary 135 not out guided England to a remarkable one-wicket win in the third Ashes Test against Australia at Headingley.A stunning 258 against South Africa in Cape Town in 2016 remains his highest Test score, with Stokes also having taken more than 250 Test wickets as well."Ben Stokes leaves the international game as one of England's greatest ever cricketers and one of the defining figures of his generation," said England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) chairman Richard Thompson.Stokes, however, also experienced several low moments on and off the field in his England career as well.England were just six balls away from winning the 2016 T20 World Cup, with the West Indies needing an unlikely 19 off the last over of the final in Kolkata.But Stokes was struck for four successive sixes by Carlos Brathwaite and cut a crestfallen figure at the finish.And in September 2017, Stokes was arrested in the early hours after a fracas outside a nightclub in Bristol, southwest England, following a one-day international against the West Indies.He was ultimately found not guilty on a charge of affray in a criminal trial 11 months later, but by then Stokes had missed an Ashes series loss in Australia.

Venus Williams relishes 'very special' Wimbledon reunion with sister Serena

Venus Williams is relishing the "very special" opportunity to reunite with her sister Serena in the Wimbledon doubles.A decade on from winning the last of their six Wimbledon doubles titles together, the American siblings will be back on court at the All England Club next week.After receiving a wild card following Serena's sensational return from four years in retirement, the pair will take on Camila Osorio and Solana Sierra in the first round."It's very special indeed. We have had quite a history here and it's nice to be back in 2026, so ready to go," Venus told reporters on Saturday.Venus, 46, plays only intermittently on the WTA Tour in the twilight of her career, while Serena, 44, is taking tentative steps in her unexpected comeback.It seemed they had played together for the last time when Serena retired following the 2022 US Open, saying she was "evolving away" from tennis.But, motivated by a desire to play in front of her two young daughters, Serena is back on the circuit, playing doubles at Queen's Club with Victoria Mboko and Karolina Muchova in the Berlin Open.She will also play singles at Wimbledon for the first time since her US Open farewell. 'EXCITED WE'RE PLAYING TOGETHER'"I'm excited we're playing together and I can't wait until we hit the courts," Venus said."As soon as she wanted to play doubles and we were playing doubles, that's how it works."Venus won five Wimbledon singles titles between 2000 and 2008, while Serena has lifted the trophy seven times at the All England Club.Serena will take on Australian world number 53 Maya Joint in the first round as she bids for a 24th Grand Slam singles title and first since the 2017 Australian Open.Doubts remain about how well Serena will be able to compete in singles after so long away from the top level.Asked about Serena's current performance, Venus defiantly said: "Can you walk over to the courts and watch her play? That's probably your best bet."There is no doubt that she has nothing to prove, at all."

New Zealand’s Latham and Conway pile on the runs before Stokes breakthrough

New Zealand's Tom Latham and Devon Conway broke a record that had stood for nearly a hundred years before England skipper Ben Stokes marked his return to international duty by sparking a late fightback on the first day of the third and deciding Test at Trent Bridge.The Black Caps were still well-placed on 361-4 at stumps on Thursday’s opening day, with this three-match series all square at 1-1.But they had been 317-0 while New Zealand captain Latham, capitalising on winning a good toss in sweltering heat, made 151 and fellow left-handed opener Conway 157 before they were both dismissed in the final session to spark a mini-collapse.The two 34-year-olds' partnership was the highest for any New Zealand wicket in a Test against England, surpassing the 276 shared by Stewie Dempster and Jackie Mills at Wellington back in 1930.Not for the first time, however, it was Stokes, recalled alongside paceman Gus Atkinson after missing the hosts' crushing 253-run defeat in the second Test at the Oval for breaking a midnight curfew celebrating his side's win in the series opener at Lord's, who broke through for England.Seam-bowling all-rounder Stokes, almost by force of will, had Latham edging a good-length delivery and wicketkeeper Jamie Smith, who had dropped the New Zealand skipper on 129 after sitting out New Zealand's mammoth victory at the Oval on paternity leave, made no mistake.England's 317-1 became 319-2 in the next over when Conway holed out to part-time off-spinner Joe Root, with substitute fielder Matt Fisher taking a fine running catch at long-on.Rachin Ravindra carelessly skyed Atkinson to Smith and next ball Henry Nicholls, fresh from his century at the Oval, fell for 36 to what became the last ball of the day when caught behind off fast bowler Jofra Archer.But the day still belonged to New Zealand, with Conway, telling Sky Sports he was "pretty happy with the way things have gone".Latham and Conway's four previous partnerships this series - two, nought, 14 and eight - gave no indication of the pair's run-spree on Thursday but they cashed in on ideal batting conditions."We knew that the wicket was going to be quite nice," said Conway, who made a round trip of 23,000-miles (37,000 kilometre) to New Zealand between the first and second Tests to see his new-born baby. "It was important for us to put pressure on the bowling.He added: "It's a little disappointing to have lost two wickets at the end but we've got a lot of batters in the shed so hopefully we can kick on."Recalled off-spinner Shoaib Bashir, who hadn't bowled in a Test in more than a year, almost had Conway out for 18 when a mistimed a drive off a well-flighted delivery just evaded a diving Root at short extra-cover.Stokes brought himself on, to cheers from the crowd, for the 20th over, with New Zealand 64-0 but Conway drove his second ball for four.Latham completed a 149-ball hundred with successive boundaries off Stokes -- a slashing cut followed by a leg-glance. It was his 17th century in 95 Tests.New Zealand were 213-0 at tea, with Latham 109 not out and Conway unbeaten on 94.Conway got to his eighth hundred in 36 Tests with consecutive fours off Bashir, lofting him over wide long-on and square-driving him through point.He then struck superb sixes in successive overs, lofting a Bashir full-toss high over deep midwicket and pulling Tongue over long leg.Conway was on 130 when a diving Ben Duckett could only get the tips of his fingers to a tough chance at square leg.Latham, however, should have been out for 129 when he gloved Atkinson down the legside only for Smith to miss the routine chance as the ball went straight through his gloves and hit his chest.

England coach Thomas Tuchel admitted his team had lacked a cutting edge in a frustrating 0-0 draw with Ghana but insisted there were plenty of positive signs going forward in their quest to win the World Cup."It's a long tournament and I think the boys tried everything. They played with the right energy," said Tuchel after the stalemate at the Gillette Stadium near Boston."We always try to entertain our fans. It was difficult today but I hope the fans don't lose belief. There is a long way to go. I just feel I was right that we were in a very difficiult group."England had 79 percent of the possession but could not break down a determined Ghanaian defence in the Group L contest.They also lacked the cutting edge which made the difference in their opening 4-2 win against Croatia in Dallas, having 19 attempts on goal but managing only three on target.Manchester City's Nico O'Reilly hit the bar late on after coming off the bench, and Harry Kane blazed the rebound over to sum up a frustrating day for England."It fell to him and 99 times out of 100 he takes that chance. If he converts his chance maybe we are talking now about the patience and discipline and performance," added Tuchel."But now it is 0-0 and maybe the headlines are a little different. We had enough set-pieces to decide the match but we were not clinical enough."The German said that it was "just natural" to rely on Kane, who was unable to add to his two goals against Croatia and move ahead of Gary Lineker as his country's all-time top scorer at World Cups.Tuchel also admitted that the match could serve as a "reality check", even if the outcome is hardly too problematic for England - they have four points from two games and a win against Panama at the MetLifeStadium on Saturday will clinch progress to the last 32 as group winners. 'VAR went for a coffee'"This is a difficult, difficult team to play against. None of us thought there was an easy match ahead of us, but there were a lot of things that were much better than against Croatia."It is just not the same result or excitement but it takes two to tango," he added in a nod to Ghana's defensive approach.England remain unbeaten against African opponents at World Cups but the Black Stars were clearly delighted with the point which keeps them on course to make the knockout phase for the first time since they got to the quarter-finals in 2010."Football is not only about possession. It is also about having the right attitude," Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz said as his team built on their opening 1-0 victory against Panama."We celebrated because we got a draw against a team who are one of the favourites to win the World Cup."His team also have four points before heading to Philadelphia next to take on Croatia."You have to pay a high price to get points. Probably because we are in the United States where everything is expensive," he joked.However, the former Real Madrid and Portugal boss also felt his team should have had a penalty for a late challenge on Prince Adu by Ezri Konsa.Nothing was given by the Honduran referee and he was not summoned to check the VAR monitor."The VAR went for a coffee which is natural but it is a clear penalty and a red card," insisted Queiroz.

Serena's return puts familiar force at centre of Wimbledon

* American great said in 2022 she was evolving away from tennis* All eyes will be on who she will be drawn against on Friday* Playing doubles with sister Venus as well For a few days, the recipient of the final Wimbledon women's singles wildcard was unknown, but in reality it was always destined for ‌American great Serena Williams.Once the 44-year-old let it be known she wanted to return to the Centre Court she once owned, it was a no-brainer for ‌the All England Club committee who decide which players who do not qualify automatically receive a special ‌invite.At a stroke, the 23-time Grand Slam champion has become the ‌undisputed headline act at a tournament at which she ‌has won seven singles titles and six doubles crowns with sister Venus.World number one Aryna Sabalenka's quest for a first title on the hallowed turf, Iga Swiatek's defence of the crown, even the British obsession with Emma Raducanu will all take a back seat once Williams strolls through the gates.AURA OF THE AMERICANIt is four years since Williams lost in the Wimbledon first round to Harmony Tan and weeks later made an emotional exit at the U.S. Open, saying she was evolving away from tennis.The game has moved on since and new forces have established themselves, but no player boasts the aura of the American whose story, and that of Venus, who she will team up with in doubles, has transcended sport.Before re-appearing at Queen's Club this month, in the doubles alongside Victoria Mboko, Williams cited a desire to have her young daughters Olympia and Adira watch her play.She also rightly said she had nothing to prove. But no one should be in any doubt that Williams will return to Wimbledon believing she can still ‌mix it with the best.WIMBLEDON DRAW ON FRIDAYWhen the draw is made on Friday no one will want to see Williams in their vicinity.Legitimate questions will be asked about whether a singles return is a step too far for a player who ruled the women's game with an iron grip and who spent a joint-record 186 consecutive weeks as world number one.Looking leaner than in 2022, however, she impressed alongside Mboko at Queen's and insiders say she has been practising hard on the singles court for a Wimbledon return that was being planned as far back as the end of last year.Williams has used a GLP-1 weight-loss drug she says has helped her shed 34 pounds (15 kg) and feel "better than in years".While that has started a debate about whether they are performance enhancing and should be on a banned list, former world number one Andy Roddick said it was "exactly what she should have done"."It's avoiding injury while training the way you need to," he said on his podcast Serve. "That's easier when you have the option of ‌being 20 pounds lighter," he said.MOVEMENT WILL BE ‌KEY, RODDICK SAYSRoddick has no doubt that her weapons still remain."Serena is going to be able to serve forever," he said. "I'm never worried about Serena hitting a tennis ball. I'm never worried about her being powerful, I'm never worried about her being engaged when she's out there."When she knows where the ball is going, she is going to punish that ball. We need to see the movement. We still don't know what the side to side movement looks like."I'm curious about it all. I think she can go out and win singles matches. You see 120 mph serves on the radar gun (in the doubles at Queen's Club) and you left that match thinking I wanna see her play singles."Roddick likened the impact Williams can have on the psychology of opponents, especially inexperienced ones, merely by being on other side of the net as the "Tiger effect" -- referencing American golf great Tiger Woods.Tennis has been in something of a post golden-era with the likes of Roger Federer, Rafa Nadal and Andy Murray retired, and with Carlos Alcaraz injured, this year's Wimbledon was in danger of being relegated to a side-show to the soccer World Cup.BOX OFFICE RETURN TO TENNISThe return, therefore, of a true tennis titan is a huge boost for the organisers, fans and TV executives alike.Should Williams finally equal Margaret Court's record 24 Grand Slam singles titles, nine years after her last one, it would rival any sporting comeback in history.Whatever happens, it will be unmissable."It's pretty bold," former world number four Mary Joe Fernandez, who will be commentating for ESPN, said this ‌week. "I'm excited. I'm excited to see how she's playing, how she's moving, how the serve is firing."It's a remarkable testimony to her that she has that confidence that she can do it. If anybody can, it's Serena."

Fifteen-year-old cricket sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi donned his first official India jersey on Tuesday and said he had long dreamed of the moment.Sooryavanshi was named in India's T20 squad for the tours to Ireland and England, as well as the Asian Games, after sweeping the batting honours in this year's Indian Premier League.The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) released a video of the moment on Tuesday when the blue jersey was delivered to him, calling it "the moment the nation has been waiting for"."Ever since I first held a bat and walked onto a cricket field to practise, I dreamed of this moment... I cannot explain this feeling in words," Sooryavanshi said in the BCCI video.He was shown unpacking the shirt, with his name on the back above the number 03.Sooryavanshi is line to become India's youngest international player, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar, the batting great who made his Test debut aged 16 years and 205 days in 1989.The spotlight has been on Sooryavanshi since his batting exploits in the IPL, where he amassed 776 runs for Rajasthan Royals to finish as the tournament's leading run scorer.He struck one century and five half-centuries during the season to pick up the Orange Cap for the leading run-getter.

India recall Kohli for England ODI tour, subject to fitness

Virat Kohli will return to the Indian team for the one-day international series in ‌England starting from July, subject to a ‌fitness clearance, the country's cricket ‌board (BCCI) said on ‌Sunday. The veteran ‌batter was ruled out of this month's ODI series against Afghanistan because of an injury picked up while playing for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in a victory over Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League (IPL) final in May, where Bengaluru secured a second consecutive IPL title.India will play ‌three ODIs in England on July 14, 16 and 19 at Edgbaston, Sophia Gardens and Lord's respectively.Yashasvi Jaiswal, who replaced Kohli against Afghanistan, was not included in the squad for the England tour despite scoring a century in the third ODI against the Afghans on Saturday.Bowler Harshit ‌Rana also returns ‌after a lengthy layoff caused by a knee injury, which ruled him out of the Twenty20 World Cup and the IPL.Rana was a part of the squad in the third ODI against Afghanistan, but did not make the final playing XI.INDIA SQUAD  Shubman Gill (captain), Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Ishan Kishan, Washington Sundar, Axar Patel, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Prasidh Krishna, Harshit Rana, Arshdeep ‌Singh, Gurnoor Brar.

Henry the hero for New Zealand as England bring back Stokes

Matt Henry did the damage as New Zealand thrashed England by 253 runs in the second Test at the Oval on Sunday for a series-levelling victory as England confirmed Ben Stokes would return as captain for the deciding third Test.Stokes was dropped for breaching a team curfew following his side's win in the series opener at Lord's."Ben will be back. He'll be back as captain," said England head coach Brendon McCullum after the match.Fast-medium bowler Henry's sensational spell of four wickets for no runs in 12 balls saw England, who were 182-5 overnight, collapse to 192-9.Henry finished the match by bowling Jordan Cox as England, who were chasing a record-breaking 463 to win, were dismissed for 209.New Zealand needed just 48 minutes play on Sunday's fifth day at the Oval to square the three-match series at 1-1 ahead of next week's decider in Nottingham.Henry's superb second-innings return of 6-29, allied to his five-wicket haul in England's first-innings 5-80, gave him overall figures of 11-109.Henry's maiden 10-wicket haul in a Test was also the best by any New Zealand bowler against England, surpassing Dion Nash's 11-169 at Lord's back in 1994."I probably didn't expect things to unfold like that today," said Henry, the player of the match. With the ball, we talked about being relentless. We stuck at it and it was nice to get the rewards."'SPEARHEAD'New Zealand captain Tom Latham added: "We thought hitting the top of off stump repetitively was the way to go on this surface and Matt Henry is a good exponent of that...He has been a spearhead for some time."Shortly before play started on Sunday, the England and Wales Cricket Board announced that both Stokes and Gus Atkinson, also omitted this week for breaking curfew, had been withdrawn from county action with Durham and Surrey respectively.It was a clear hint the duo would be recalled to England duty at Trent Bridge and they were each included in a 15-man squad announced later Sunday for the third Test.But the ECB added that they both been given written warnings after breaching "specific contractual obligations" that require England players at all times to maintain the highest standards of conduct and act in the best interests of England cricket.Nevertheless, they cleared the pair of responsibility for a violent altercation in a London nightclub with Saracens rugby player Totoa Auvaa.The ECB said Stokes had no part in and did not witness Auvaa's two attempts to confront paceman Atkinson, whom it added was "the victim of unprovoked attacks" to which he did not retaliate. ENGLAND RESUMED ALL BUT BEATENEngland resumed all but beaten at 182-5, needing a further 281 runs for victory.Their hopes of an improbable win rested with stand-in captain Joe Root, 75 not out overnight.But Root had added just two runs to his score when he was plumb lbw to Henry.With an England side showing five changes, including three debutants, from the one Stokes led at Lord's, a lengthy tail was exposed by Henry.Two balls after Root's exit, the 34-year-old clean bowled Jofra Archer for a duck, with a delivery that kept low.New batsman Matthew Fisher had made a maiden Test fifty in the first innings, but on Sunday he was clean bowled for nought by Henry.With the next ball, the paceman had new batsman Josh Tongue edging to Daryl Mitchell in the slips for a golden duck, with England on the brink at 192-9.A double-wicket maiden (a bowler removing two batsmen in the same over without conceding a run) is rare in Test cricket, but Henry, hampered by back spasms at Lord's, now had two in a row.The end was not long in coming as Henry bowled Cox to seal an emphatic victory which saw both New Zealand all-rounder Glenn Phillips and Henry Nicholls, who replaced retired batting great Kane Williamson, hit hundreds. BRIEF SCORES New Zealand 391 (Phillips 101, Blundell 51, Bethell 3-26) and 362 (Nicholls 121, Ravindra 76, Mitchell 68) beat England 291 (Gay 53, Fisher 50*, Henry 5-80) and 209 (Root 75*, Brook 54, Jamieson 3-37) by 253 runs

Stokes returns to captaincy for England's third Test, says ECB

Captain Ben Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson will return for England’s third Test against New Zealand in ‌Nottingham following the conclusion of a disciplinary hearing, the England and Wales Cricket ‌Board said on Sunday.The pair were suspended from the ‌second test after a curfew ‌breach at a London nightclub ‌and were reportedly present when a member of England's security staff was involved in an incident with a Saracens rugby player following England’s first-Test win.Stokes missed England's second match as New Zealand levelled the series with a 253-run victory at The Oval on Sunday.Earlier, head coach Brendon McCullum had said England were expecting Stokes to return for the third Test after the 35-year-old withdrew from Durham’s County Championship match against Northamptonshire at the ECB’s request."Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson have been included in the England Men’s ‌squad for the third Rothesay Test against New Zealand following the conclusion of an ECB disciplinary hearing in relation to their conduct in the early hours of Monday 8 June," the board said in a statement."Stokes and Atkinson were found to have breached specific contractual obligations that require England players to at all times maintain the highest standards of conduct and act in the best interests of England cricket."The ECB said both players had received written warnings but were not blamed for the violence, noting that ‌Stokes was not present during ‌the violent conduct and that Atkinson was subjected to unprovoked attacks but did not retaliate.Joe Root has deputised as captain in Stokes' absence and reached the milestone of 14,000 Test runs, becoming only the second player to do so after India great Sachin Tendulkar.Stokes impressed for Durham, scoring 95 off 118 balls against Northamptonshire.The BBC reported on Sunday that Atkinson has also been withdrawn from his County Championship fixture. He had taken four wickets for his county side Surrey against Glamorgan.The third Test match between England and New Zealand begins on June 25 at Trent Bridge in Nottingham. England Men’s third Test squad Ben Stokes (C), Rehan Ahmed, Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Shoaib Bashir, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook, Jordan Cox, Ben Duckett, Matthew Fisher, Emilio Gay, Ollie Robinson, Joe Root, ‌Jamie Smith, Josh Tongue
