The highly anticipated opening round of WTT Champions Doha 2026, the first WTT Series event of the new season, got off to a blistering start at Lusail Sports Arena, with Kim Nayeong pulling off a miraculous comeback to progress to the round of 16 (7-11, 8-11, 11-6, 12-10, 11-9). South Korea’s Kim was dominated in the early proceedings by Singaporean player Zeng Jian in the first match, but there was a feeling that the tie could go either way, as both players engaged in long rallies, and benefited from net hits and flicking the end of the table. Trailing 2-4 and two games down, Kim finally found her rhythm and fired off three consecutive points. As the tie progressed, the Korean’s backhand started to score more and more, and she was clearly setting it up as she tried everything to get back into the match. She took game point again by utilising that powerful backhand. Deep into the fourth game, the two showed no signs of slowing down, long rallies with pinging shots decorated a game where the two kept trading leads. Zeng saved game point once before Kim eventually recovered the overall score to 2-2. Kim snatched victory from the jaws of defeat to become the first player into the round of 16 in Doha. One of the biggest matches in the women’s draw saw 17-year-old Miwa Harimoto once again get one over on Korea’s Shin Yubin (11-8, 11-8, 11-8). The duo met three times on the WTT stage last year, with Harimoto winning all three of those encounters. Harimoto came out the aggressor in the early stages, hitting hard spinning balls at Shin to go 8-3 up within minutes. Styles make matches, and these two started game two by cannoning off shots and trying to move each other across the table. As was the case in the first game, the pair shared the points in the opening exchanges before Harimoto established a four-point lead, speaking volumes to the teenager’s ability to adjust to the game state. In the third and final game, Harimoto was in a league of her own. Her 3-0 lead forced Shin to call a time out, but that wasn’t much help, as Harimoto scored straight away and didn’t slow down as her lead stretched to 6-2. With nothing to lose, Shin threw everything after her Japanese opponent and managed to get within touching distance at 8-7, but was unable to stop a straight games defeat. Elsewhere, World No 10 Dang Qiu got a convincing 3-0 win over Oh Junsung (11-9, 11-8, 13-11). The women’s World No 10, Hina Hayata, could have also recorded a straight games victory, but saw Xiaoxin Yang save four game points. In the end, she got the job done in four (11-8, 15-17, 11-2, 12-10).

Qatar's Ministry of Education and Higher Education has announced the winners of the Qatar Scientific Excellence Award 2026, with 108 candidates selected from a total of 371 applicants.The results were approved by the award's Board of Trustees, chaired by Her Excellency Minister of Education and Higher Education Lolwah bint Rashid AlKhater. Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Maryam Abdullah al-Muhannadi, the award's chief executive, said the number of winners reflected strong competition and the high quality of submissions, as well as growing awareness of the award's criteria and standards.She said the results showed a notable diversity in the educational institutions represented by the winners, including students from public, private and specialised schools, as well as civilian and military universities and colleges. This, she added, highlighted the spread of a culture of excellence across Qatar's education sector.Al-Muhannadi noted that the overall success rate was in line with the average of the past five editions, underlining the consistency of the evaluation methodology. She also pointed to the role of supportive family environments, saying that in some cases more than one member of the same family had won, in accordance with the award's criteria.She stressed that only candidates who achieved the required scores were selected, following a comprehensive assessment process that included file reviews and interviews, ensuring fairness, transparency and equal opportunities.Congratulating the winners, al-Muhannadi said this year's edition had attracted strong interest and high-quality participation, reinforcing the award's status as a national platform that promotes excellence, quality and innovation. She also praised candidates who were not selected, saying that applying for the award itself demonstrated ambition and a commitment to excellence.The main award ceremony will be held under the patronage of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, on Feb 15, 2026, marking 20 years since the launch of the award. The award aligns with Qatar National Vision 2030, particularly its human development pillar, by investing in national talent and fostering an educational environment that supports creativity, innovation and sustainable development. 

The peregrine falcons failed for the second consecutive day to catch the racing pigeons in the Hadd Al-Tahaddi Championship, held as part of the 17th edition of the Qatar International Falcons and Hunting Festival (Marmi 2026). The festival is held under the patronage of His Excellency Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad al-Thani and is supported by the Social and Sports Activities Support Fund “Daam.” It is taking place at Sabkhat Marmi in the Sealine Area, and will continue until January 24.The competition between the peregrine falcons and the racing pigeons resulted in the pigeons prevailing in Group Five, as none of the falcons were able to catch the pigeons, which returned safely to their nests in Umm Ebairiya for the second day in a row.**media[401740]**Shawi al-Kaabi, chairman of Hadd Al-Tahaddi Committee, said that the falconers of Group Five were indeed unable to make a catch, and the advantage went to Abdullah Fakhro’s pigeons for the second consecutive day, leaving the number of winners and qualifiers for the final round at eight falconers.Al-Kaabi explained that it is difficult to say that the peregrine falcons are weak or poorly trained. During the competition, the falcons chased and attempted to trap the pigeons, but the pigeons remained faster thanks to their light weight and intense training. Racing pigeons are among the fastest birds, making the competition fierce, but luck did not favour the falcons.He added that the Hadd Al-Tahaddi Championship will continue on Wednesday during the evening session with Group Six, calling on participants to arrive early so the committee can begin its work in an organised manner to ensure better coordination of the championship.**media[401741]**Meanwhile, Abdullah Fakhro, owner of the racing pigeons, said that the pigeons’ superiority for the second consecutive day in the Hadd Al-Tahaddi Championship within the Marmi Festival confirms that organised work and continuous training make the difference in such difficult competitions. He explained that the pigeons demonstrated a high ability to manoeuvre and accurately read the flight path of the peregrine falcons over the Sealine, enabling them to escape and return safely to their nests despite the falcons’ powerful flight and rapid dives.Fakhro added that the secret behind this success lies in his constant focus on diversifying and renewing his racing pigeons by introducing new types and young birds no older than one or two years, ages characterised by high vitality and better responsiveness to training and endurance. However, he stressed that he does not know in advance which competitor will be assigned a particular pigeon, which gives the competition greater credibility and makes the challenge fairer and more exciting.**media[401742]**The morning competitions of the Al-Tal'a Championship were held, featuring falconers from Groups 21 to 25. Abdulhadi Jaber al-Buraidi from Group 21 and Hamdan Mohamed al-Nuaimi from Group 22 qualified for the next round, while the remaining groups failed to advance.Rashdan bin Obaid al-Rashdan, vice chairman of the Al-Tal’a Committee, said that Tuesday’s Al-Tal’a competitions took place under suitable and favourable hunting conditions. All participants were given ample opportunity and sufficient time for their falcons to ascend, but the falcons’ performance was poor that day, particularly in Groups 23, 24, and 25.**media[401743]**He noted that two falcons were disqualified because each repeatedly stopped mid-air and deviated from their intended path, indicating they could not see the houbara bustard. He added that the Al-Tal’a Championship will continue on Wednesday for Groups 26 to 30, with the qualifiers concluding on Thursday through the postponed group competitions (12, 13, 14, 15, 19, and 20). After that, a draw will be conducted among those qualified for the semifinal round.Besides, the registration for the International Da’w Championship began Tuesday and will continue until January 15. The International Da’w Championship, scheduled to take place on January 20, includes four categories. Registration for the International Shooting Championship concludes today (January 7). The championship includes three categories: Juniors (ages 14–18), to be held on January 9; Amateurs on January 10; and Professionals, whose competitions will take place on January 17. 

Competitions in Group Four of the Haddad Al-Tahaddi Championship were held Monday as part of the 17th Qatar International Falcons and Hunting Festival (Marmi 2026), with homing pigeons prevailing after all falcons failed to make a catch.None of the Peregrine falcons succeeded in catching the pigeons, which returned safely to their lofts in the Umm Ebairiya Area.**media[401407]**Shawi al-Kaabi, chairman of the Haddad Al-Tahaddi Committee, explained that in Group Four, none of the falconers succeeded in making a catch, giving the advantage to Abdullah Fakhro’s pigeon after two previous rounds in which the falcons had managed to secure victories. As a result, the number of winners in the championship and those qualifying for the final has now reached eight falconers.**media[401408]**Al-Kaabi said the performance of the falcons was good, delivering appropriate competition and maneuvering, but luck was not on their side in this round. He noted that the falconers showed apparent readiness and the fitness of the falcons was evident.**media[401409]**Al-Talaa Championship competitions for Groups 16–20 were also held Monday. The committee concluded the competitions for three groups (16, 17, and 18), resulting in the qualification of two falconers from Team Barzan in Groups 16 and 18, while no one qualified from Group 17.**media[401410]**However, Al-Talaa Championship Committee decided to postpone the competitions of Groups 19 and 20 due to increased wind speed.Ali bin Ayyash al-Mansouri, chairman of Al-Talaa Committee at the Marmi Festival, said that the decision to postpone the two groups came after careful monitoring of weather conditions at the competition field, as wind speeds intensified after the completion of the first three groups, which had competed under ideal conditions with clear visibility.**media[401411]**Al-Mansouri stressed that the committee is keen on ensuring the safety of participants, in addition to providing equal and fair opportunities for everyone, guaranteeing that competitions are held under fair and suitable conditions for all, whether in the Al-Talaa Championship or the Haddad Al-Tahaddi Championship.**media[401412]**He noted that Tuesday morning will witness the qualifying rounds of five groups in Al-Talaa Championship (Groups 21–25), with continuous monitoring of weather conditions to ensure the safety of all participants.**media[401413]**The festival witnessed a notable public turnout, especially from foreign visitors interested in falconry heritage.

QNB forecast a slight improvement in global growth in 2026, amid stability in major economies, projecting a rate of 3.2 percent, which is slightly higher than overall forecasts.The bank's weekly report said that this growth rate points to a modest acceleration in activity, although it remains below long-term growth trends, which are more balanced and convergent rates.The report discussed the key factors shaping growth prospects in the three largest economies which together account for nearly 60 percent of the global economy. It expected US economic growth to remain strong, supported by robust household consumer spending and investment flows.In this context, the report noted that consumption is benefiting from the strength of household balance sheets, which are in their strongest financial position in decades, in addition to low unemployment rates.It said that the boom in artificial intelligence is stimulating investment flows and is expected to increase productivity through the adoption of new technologies. Moreover, the Federal Reserve is continuing a major shift in its policy as it moves from tightening toward neutrality.The report projected that the federal funds rate would be cut to 3.5 percent by the end of 2026, which would help support investment and consumption growth by making credit cheaper, increasing the attractiveness of new business activity, and reducing the opportunity cost of spending. This could lead to a slight acceleration in US economic growth to around 2.2 percent in 2026.As for the Chinese economy, the report discussed the possibility of a slight slowdown in growth. However, strong export performance, domestic demand, and rising productivity are expected collectively to support growth of around 5 percent, which is the target rate the government is expected to adopt.The report noted that despite significant uncertainty surrounding trade policy and the higher tariffs imposed by the United States in 2025, China's trade surplus exceeded one trillion US dollars for the first time last year.In this regard, it highlighted that the roughly 30 percent year-on-year decline in Chinese exports to the United States by the end of 2025 was offset by the flexibility of companies that successfully redirected their shipments toward alternative markets.The report added that the Chinese economy continues its transition from exporting simple consumer goods to manufacturing advanced technology and high-value-added products, a process that is moving China to the top of global supply chains and contributing to higher productivity growth. In addition, domestic consumption is expected to remain supported by fiscal policy, along with further gradual monetary easing, strengthening the favorable factors underpinning moderately positive outlooks for 2026.As for the Euro area, the bank projected a slight acceleration in economic growth, supported by fiscal spending and a less restrictive monetary policy for activity. It noted that spending under the European Union's Next Generation EU (NGEU) program contributed about 0.5 percentage points to overall growth in 2025 and could continue to support growth in 2026 if it remains on track.In addition, the Russia-Ukraine war triggered defense spending initiatives estimated to increase GDP by more than 1 percent in over 16 countries that applied to benefit from coordinated flexibility under the EU's fiscal rules.The report pointed out that monetary policy has become more accommodative, as the European Central Bank cut its benchmark interest rate by 200 basis points from a highly restrictive level of 4 percent in mid-2024 to 2 percent by June of last year.It said it expects the interest rate cut to stimulate real private-sector credit growth, noting that economic indicators showed a clear improvement in the services sector, which entered an expansion phase during the last four months of 2025.QNB's weekly report concluded by noting that since the services sector accounts for about 70 percent of the euro area economy, this was an encouraging sign for the region, which is expected to achieve growth of 1.5 percent in 2026, higher than previous forecasts.
